Sinister: Seasons Greetings And Goodbyes

'lo listees Just bidding everyone a happy holidays as I bugger off from work for a couple weeks and unsubscribe so that the e-mail server doesn't crash from the zillion list messages I'd be receiving, causing the LAN-support guy to investigate what was causing all the traffic and discovering, horror of horrors, that I've spent the last four months doing absolutely nothing except sending and receiving non-work related e-mails... and no one needs to know that... SO anyways, before I leave, I'd like to throw my two bits in on a number of topics: major labels: I don't believe major labels are inherently evil - indie may be fine for younger bands, but as their fanbase grows, the smaller label may not be able to support the band to the extent that a major label can. Point in case - R.E.M. going from IRS to Warner Bros. They didn't have much choice, really, if they wanted to keep growing. So as for B&S, the selfish part of me would like them to sign to a major so that, if nothing else, I wouldn't be paying the ridiculous prices for their records that I am... but having experienced the stellar service from Jeepster on the latest EP, I may be all turned around on this... So to sum up - I have no problem with major labels. Most of my favorite bands (B&S excepted) are on major labels, and are doing quite well as far as I can see. I think the key is getting the right deal with the right people. least favorite song: Gotta say, I prefer StuM's compositions over StevieJ's. If I were to pick songs off of Arab Strap that maybe shouldn't have made the cut, in order, they'd be Seymour Stein (depending on my mood, it can be painful to listen too), Space Boy Dream (not Steve, I know) and then Chickfactor. I think my main beef is Steve's lyrics seem awkward and graceless compared to Stu's. The music in Chickfactor is quite good, rescuing it, but I don't really care for Seymour Stein on any level. It's not a Revolution #9-type of dislike, but still. I hit skip a fair bit when I can be bothered. And I like Isobel's songs. It could just be because she's got such a cute voice, it's nigh-impossible to dislike. As for the worst B&S songs being better than anything else out there, I disagree a lot. I find there's a lot of good music out there. You just have to look for it. The Black Sessions: A little dated topic-wise, sure, but I just got mine. Big props up to Alexandra - muchos gracias. Excellent stuff. The Delgados stuff is quite good too, looks like I'll be buying a few more items on Boxing Day... The Black Hole: The most terrifying Disney movie ever, as far as I'm concerned. I wept when Old Bob stayed to fight Maximillian, and when you saw a person's eyes in Maximillian's eye slits, well that was just too much. The whole film absolutely traumatized me, the read-along-record book only a little less so. So I think that about sums up for now. Everybody have a good holidays - I'm living vicariously through the lot of you. I'll be monitoring your shenanigans via digest, though. And that's about it. Seeya. -- Frank Yang "Happy holidays." Sinister: mediocrity is the worse?

Hello! I am not sure if the subject I have chosen today is a quote from Oscar Wilde or someone else, but as lately quite a few listees have been moaning and whinin about the poor quality and the low interest of most of the postings, I was doubting to contribute to lower it even further , beyond any conceivable point (cauliflower vs. Brussels sprouts in Christmas dinners debate)as obviously my wit and wisdom are not enough to restore it to its past, splendid times... But I am too coward and have chosen just to keep my message in an standard 'interest rate' , regarding that perhaps that is the worst that could happen to our list and indeed, I am subtly sticking a sharp knife into its so white heart, pushing it to death. The Pastels in Nottingham : here Marine Research were the ones to come with Stephen and co, and played their heavenly part quite well. Stephen's dancing is ace! Robin and me said hello to Jonathan at the end of the show, as I had never met him 'live',but I had emailed him a few times last Spring concerning a translation of a review of Illumination in Rock de Lux, the Spanish 'so cool' magazine that Sister Disco Miller talked about a week ago or so.Jonathan could even remember my name and was absolutely lovely with us.He was wearing a really funny T shirt with lorries printed on it! About Chickfactor , I cannot help to rise my voice to give it my fierce and brave support. The lyrics are touching though the tune is so simple. I would discard 'could have been a brilliant career' if I had to with some of the songs in TBWTAS>,but it is just a question of taste, not bad to my eyes.The title is too Smiths,by the way. Doubtful still about going down London for a few hours tomorrow and meet my Guru of the List, el sen#or Pantalones, aka Stevie Trousers.Apart from nice Mark and his cute,dark haired gal, Petula and all the rest,sure.I have to be here on Saturday , so should catch the last train at 11 and that implies just to say hello, eat some of that delectable Italian cuisine and 'heaves on to St Pancras'. Hello, Long time listener first-time caller, Two things, one a statement and the other question. 1) Chickfactor is a thing of beauty. It may not reach the heady levels of 'Get Me Away From Here' or 'We Rule the School', but it does not deserve the level of dogging that it would appear that it is coming in for. 2). :why is it that weekends go so fast? it was rather a good one though; :spent :it in london, and made it to the pastels gig where lady penelope, :biondino, :funkyseb and a whole host of other sinisterians were congregated at the :back of the garage. v-twin were supposed to be supporting, but future :pilot turned up instead, but i missed them anyway so i was quite :relieved! One thing I'd like to ask: why is it that Future Pilot was always supporting the Pastels?? IN January when I was in London for the Pastels gig it was also the delicious Sushil Dade. Co-incidence? Mibby I'm just a little bit naive, but I reckon all this indie = good, not-indie = bad is a big load of horse shit. I don't quite see why good music can't come from bands signed to big companies. Ok, so there's a lot of Alanis/Celine/Mariah shit out there (and lets not forget that stuff floats the boat for some people) and most of it is on big labels, but so what? Did the new Beck album lose any of its soul because it was released on a bigger label than intended? Has the manics album gained any because none of the big American labels wanted it (which I find particularly funny - not even their own label wanted them. Serves the miserable welsh bastards right)? Bitches Brew. Kind of Blue. 'Round Midnight. Three Miles Davis albums that, in my opinion, piss all over just about every album released this year - yet they're on a huge label. Maybe that's not the point though - he is dead after all. I dunno. Just go and buy/copy an album, don't worry about which label its on, and enjoy the music. And leave the ordinary people listen to Alannis/Celine/Garth - its their choice. The only thing that sucks are music nazis. And Manic Street Preachers. And Oasis.
