hey all you angel-headed hipsters, I have just read this book for about tenth time and it just gets more and more fantastic. I must recommend it, it's called The Season of the Witch by James Leo Herlihy. read it!!! unless you are one of those people who doesn't like books from the first person point of view. it is very first person. or unless you are one of those people who has something against hippies. it's very hippy. but it has some super quotes (lots of Hesse quotes). it's also very funny and very easy to read. I love hippies. And Donovan. It's out of print, though, so it might be hard to find, I dont know...he also wrote Midnight Cowboy, which I didn't read ,but I saw the movie. It's quite the classic, or so I've heard. Dear peeps may i just say there is a boy galavanting around claiming himself to be the baby of the list. Crystalballs, you watch it. I'm the baby of the list, and no sniffy boy's going to take that away from me, RIGHT. you watch it, or you'll be pushing up daises. NO JOKE* I was crusing (yes, crusing, surfing is for nerds) the listcrush site when I noticed Funkyseb has been deleted from memory. gasp! it's true, they sent the boys round! at least that's the only excuse i can't think of for the boy not replying to my mail. Mind you, if i assumed everyone who never mailed me back was dead, well...there would be many more tears in the world. I spent my afternoon scrappling around with an O.S map in my geography exam. I mean, you'd think I'd know my arse from my elbow well enough by now to do grid references, wouldn't you? well, no, sadly not...I was transported back to the nightmare of the geography field trip in Whitby, the centre of seaside drizzle. I was back on the moors, the huge paper map stuck to my face, preventing me from breathing at the sound of the scary-pushy-mum-sheep coming ever closer! miserable english countryside. does it get any better? Another useless message from me (the second in two days...). I would only thank everybody who replied me about my question on Papas Fritas. I received ten e-mails on this band. Everyone was really helpful. But, because I don't have enough time to reply to everyone, I will use the list to do it. BTW, J.Irving is one of my favourite writer. I don't know the names of his novels in english, but I liked very much most of them. And why everyone thinks that JD Salinger is a perv? I've read all of his novels and it only seems to me that he's a genius writer. But maybe this is a perversion. I dunno. all this sexuality talk has been getting me hot at work...i might duck out for a quick wank. ian wrote: "good luck with finding a gay boy who's into belle and sebastian." it's not impossible...of course, i'm in san francisco and if you're searching for a girl who's a boy who likes boys to be girls who likes dogs when on wheels, well, trust me, they're out there...one night we were at a club and a local paper was there taking personal ads (for free drinks) and i was really "happy", so i wrote one that started "arab-strapped boy"...well a rather smart-sounding fellow named jim answered it, telling me how he couldn't believe there was another guy into belle & sebastian...well that was before bowlie and we never got the chance to meet, but 'those' boys are definitely out there...or maybe i just answered my own ad. hmmm. as for gay bars being worse than hetero bars...ha! you obviously haven't been cruising the het scene lately...drinking? people looking to laid? bad music? not in straight bars!! never!! although i do have to say that the indie nights in london do have a freshness that most places here lack. i was at room 2 a few weeks ago after bowlie and not only was it excellent to hear TBWTAS, but it was great to see such a mixed crowd...girls kissing boys...boys kissing boys...it's wasn't about sexuality--it was about dancing to good music. full stop. as for those of you considering the sex industry, one warning: i deal with sex a lot with my job and i have friends who are sex workers, and while san francisco in general provides a sex-positive environment, i've seen it take its toll mentally (as well as physically). innocence lost is never fully regained. and finally, my book recommendation is "geek love" by katherine dunn...it was the first book i read when i moved to california...i picked it up off the floor of some guy's flat where i spent the night and i couldn't put it down...pure imaginative genius...disgusting and beautiful at the same time. it made me cry and that takes a lot. cheers. jim. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Dear you lot, Second EXAM over and done with. I mentioned Bruce Willis twice, and up the bum sex three times. I thought of Peter Miller when I wrote about up the bum sex. It was fun. Finished exam with half an hour to spare so I decided to amuse myself pondering how I would decorate the sports hall (for its where we were sat), and decided that a nice Hanson mural would be nice. Being gay? And liking Belle and Sebastian too? Blimey charley who would have thought. You'll catch them poofters liking the Smiths next. "oooh what difference does it maaaaake it makes none"... PUT YOUR HHAAAANSON, PUT YOUR HAAAANSON.... a Hanson liking Reef tribute band? From Bolton? Maybe. Hello to the tobiesoup person who said they wanted to be a brit. You don't want to be. By law you'll be required to eat soggy chips at least once a month. I had some HORRIBLE chips from the chippy today because the kebab shop was FULL and now I know why. I feel sick. They were so GREASY. I'd have prefered a deep fried mars bar. Which then again would be a million times better than chips and curry sauce upon which I have ultimate scorn. You know what? Internet geeks are NOTHING compared to computer game geeks. And I know this because I am becoming one. I get home and I switch on the computer and I MUST PLAY the almight "Bust-A-Move". Just saw an article on the NME website saying that Glam Punk band, "The Toilet Boys" had to evacuate the LA2, after having set fire to the venue with a flame throwing guitar!! That's pretty good isn't it. We're gonna need to get our act together as R0olz (notice the cunning number in there, like 5ive) if we're going to match the fantastic Kiss-esque antics of the Toilet boys. hELLO,oops, Hello, that'll teach me to use the shift key. Um, I'm going in hospital today to have a little operation. Do you know what would cheer me up. Well, what you all can do to allay my fears is to vote for me on the list crush thing, I've already put my name down so all you have to do is vote. This is where you need to go, as if it wasn't in your favourites folder. (http://listcrush.future.easyspace.com) ah, just as I was writing my message my I had to go, so I saved it and now I'm back from the hospital. The doctor pulled my toe nail off because I dropped a large rock on it and the nail smashed. It hurts like hell. The doctor said that I should put my feet up but I'm at my computer writing to you, aren't I brave. The anaesthetic should wear off soon and I'll be in real pain. So please vote for me - god, I feel like William Hague, he's tried to get on to the list crush too, but he was rejected. ffflip! Bye for now... PS, I've got to use a walking stick to help me get to places. You coulda turned around and hit me and I wouldn't've cared. Ahh Eurovision shines like the light at the end of a particularly dark and twisted tunnel. Anyone who drinks and will be watching Eurovision should probably go to: http://www.cowgate.demon.co.uk/mit/drinking/eurovision.html POP Fact: this year's UK entry is written by Paul Varney of late-eighties Bros-imitators Yell! (only hit a cover of 'Instant Replay'). I'm afraid I cannot substantiate rumours about him being any relation to Reg Varney or that I am the only person on the list who knows what I'm talking about. Jake, Ailsa & Mark have been going on about bagpipes BUT without mentioning Big Country, who spent their entire career making guitars sound like bagpipes. Sometimes I feel that I should have spent my youth listening to The Pastels and Felt and The Smiths and Sarah things or even Augusto Pablo, rather than Bruno Brookes and Simon Bates. I *do* know a lot about music, but only top twenty stuff, with a side line in nineties alt-pop and I'm sure I must be missing out on loads of ace stuff, even though I can usually work out the 'mystery year' on Simon Mayo within two records. Then I think, shouldn't I be using my (steadily depleting) brain cells for something more important than the words to all the Number Ones for the last twenty years (and all the words to all the songs played at indie discos for the last ten years), and learn something important like brain surgery or quantum physics or how to change the wheel on a car. But then, I always do well in pub quizzes, so it's not a complete waste (sigh).
