Chris McQuain told us that: My fave Godards in order: 1. My Life to Live 2. Contempt 3. Masculin/Feminin (for some reason, this strikes me as the most B&S-like, don't ask why just see the movie) 4. Pierrot Le Fou 5. Alphaville 6. Breathless 8. Two or Three Things I Know About Her ...and I believe those are the ones I've seen. Please, everybody, write in with YOUR favorites (and I'm only half joking about that). I am currently working on a book about underappreciated '60s actresses, including Anna Karina (in most of the films above, married to Godard at the time), Liv Ullman, Bibi Andersson, Gena Rowlands, ....... What happened to film number 7? Is M/F the most B&S only because Francoise Hardy is in it? There are a couple other cool, less well known Godard 60s films that are worth a peek if you get a chance: "La Chinoise" and "Le Gai Savoir". They're a lot of fun. I think Jacques Demy's 60s musical films are very B&S (whatever that means) -- "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and "The Young Girls of Rochefort" . And it's not just that Michel Legrand music... As for Gina Rowlands and hubbie John Cassavetes (who's films I always think of alongside Godard's -- don't ask me why), I think they could have been in the Bowlie film/video fest too.... "Minnie and Moskowitz" "A Woman Under the Influence" "Opening Night" "LoveStreams". Maybe when Lazy Line Painter Jane grows a bit older she'll become Gina Rowlands in "A Woman Under the Influence." (Though she'd have to learn a new accent....) A message from List Mummy, saucepan in hand. There's too much traffic on this list for it to be sustainable, from past experience, and from watching the subscriptions. We've seen this before: too many messages with too little content, or messages for a pile of close friends. Could I ask you all to pull together a bit, remember this isn't a friends club for 20 people, and be very careful if you're thinking of posting that (a) you don't dare until you yourself know the full weight of reading every other message before you and (b) you're damn sure at least 75% of the people on the list will want to read what you type. Please lay off a little if you've posted a lot recently and give others room to breathe so they feel they can actually join in. We'll notice. I'm deadly serious, this list needs you all to help so it can keep a spring in its step. That probably means we don't want 999 quotes from Homer Simpson, icon to modern living that he is. Out of circulation as I am just now, I will do what I can to make sure this list stays around and is enjoyable for all people, new and old. Let me know if I'm getting this right please, or give me suggestions if you have any ideas; but not on the list, to me privately. Mails you send will stack up in my inbox for ages and you might get a general reply, but they're always always gratefully received and listened to. Oh and thank you to everyone who's been sweet about me being an awful lump at the moment. I've not gone far and I'm watching. No original thoughts of my own, so just musings on other people's threads. White Horses: The Trash Can Sinatras covered it. B-side of Only Tingue Can Tell. Rather good. When I went to type "Sinatras" there, I typed Sinister by mistake. I just did it again trying to explain. You have finally taken over my mind. But it probably didn't take much doing. Simpsons: Why has no-one mentioned the Simpsons episode that has Sideshow Bob's brother Cecil voiced by David Hyde Pierce and is written in the style of an episode of Frasier in places? That one was rather good. First two verses of Slow Graffiti: I thought it was about The Picture of Dorian Gray. And you *really* don't want to get into that... Tim Hopkins baiting: Sergeant Pepper is the greatest album ever in the entire history of the world. Vic Godard is over-rated. Middle class white boys can't really understand the point of reggae. I might not necessarily agree with any of the above. Chris Leonard's Jackanory spot: It's back! Hurrah! Now who stole the poetry parrot? Winona Ryder/The Replacements: Winona Ryder specifically requested that the school in Heathers be called Westerberg High after Paul of that ilk, head Replacement honcho. There's another Replacements reference (a lyric quote) in Heathers too, but I can't remember what it is. I'll go home and watch it tonight and try and find it, maybe. Or else someone here will just tell me, as you're all rather good at things like that. Because I'm really going to watch the James Bond film. Lord Anthony: Nothing at all to do with Brideshead Revisited as far as I know. Lord Anthony were manufacturers of every single anorak that the less well off kids wore to school, and I believe those fabby parkas with the furry hood trims. Sort of synonymous with being a snottery-nosed little not-in-with-the-cool-kids kind of kid in British schools in the seventies and early eighties, a bit like the hero of said song. At our primary school you weren't allowed to do those snorkel-hooded parkas up in a South Park stylee as it meant you couldn't see out the sides and you would be likely to get hit by a car when croosing the road with your vision somewhat hindered. Will the talents of that family never end? I'll spare you all the huge mental discourse I had prepared on how you can just like something (art, music, book, TV show) for the simple reason that it moves or affects you in some way without the need for "real" validation. I just like stuff. It's really as simple as that. I suspect Celine Dion fans feel the same way as that. And if anyone thinks that makes me less of a Belle and Sebastian fan, well fine. I don't think it does, and I've decided to start having the courage of my own convictions about everything again so I firmly believe what I just said there. Some of that's because of some of you. You know who you are, big hugs to you all. When we're done with Tim Hopkins, can we start a campaign to get Alix Campbell back please? Oh, I went to look for everyone's favourite sinister cutie-pie on the movie database thingie, and the homepage on imdb.com is asking for people to write in if they know the whereabouts of former child stars. Who's going to do the honours then? I was an extra in Restless Natives, at the end where they are driving down the Mound in Edinburgh, I'm in the crowd scene. My best friend Neil was in Neighbours, he bought a can of Coke off Henry Ramsay. And my big brother was interviewed on CountryFile (Sunday lunchtime farmer programme that nobody watches). That's crap isn't it. Sorry. Oh, I did work with the father of the bloke who gets turned into a fly in the Granton Star Cause (first part of the Acid House) last summer. See, everything all ties together once again. That soundtrack may have been responsible for introducing some great Scottish bands to the wider world, but it also introduced them to the Gyres. Essential Elvis Costello records...Hmmm, here is my two cents: Blood and Chocolate, and This Years Model. Jarkko asked if anyone here liked The Replacements. I have to answer a BIG YES. Again my two cents: best albums Let It BE, and Tim (although Pleased to Meet Me does rawk man). And as to J's comments pertaining to why some people write to the list so often: how about why not? I mean, who is hurt by a thousand people (who happen to be fans of a certain band) communicating their thoughts? And, more for the prolific Jarkko: a dream such as yours may be hard to fulfill; you do have to meet the women first, then take it from there. It is a nice dream though. Tired from reading all of your letters, so I'll leave with the obligatory profound song quote: Bitterness is the lowest sin, a bitter man rots from within. Smog.
