well i'm out of the nursery and into the fire as it were..............i've been sitting back on my butt long enough without drumming up the courage to post ....wondering if i ever would ,and then mr barrett slags 'the who' as old poodle rock pish!.............well well well, if that didn't just get my goat and inflict flagrant attrocities upon it. Hey List, Well, I think 430 messages is a lot. I mean, I had actually read a fair number too. Somehow I suppose I only have myself to blame. But I have been very, very busy. So anyway, several hundred messages back, someone mentioned Rhoda having a line about faggot friends. Erm... not *entirely* sure on this one, but I don't believe that's how it goes. I know for at least a majority of thie lines it involves various things like "a fag in the morning," being the slang term for cigarette. You know, as I was making the 10-hour drive from my hometown to New York, I listened to my Tigermilk tape a bit, which has Rhoda on it. I was thinking of it in perhaps a different light. We all know how Struan writes songs in the first-person perspective of others. Perhaps the song is about two very old people who have fallen in love in a nursing home. Either that or two young invalids... Are any other NY listees going to the Nick Drake tribute on Saturday? I'm excited to hear Robert Forster's rendition of whichever song he chooses to play. Sinister: it's an allergy compilation

goodness me, wait a few days to check mails and all hell breaks loose. minimal b+s content, but it's all wrapped up in one neat package. okay, the bit about compiling a list of people who are involved in band things: i sort-of am, i'm a deluxe groupie (as anyone who's seen me at a show can confirm) and take photos for press things and promotions for some toronto bands. i've also nearly got it on with glenn jones of cul de sac if that counts for anything, and ate thai food with lou barlow. i also record stuff solo (doesn't that sound pompous?)under the name of sound engineering, but i think only a couple people have tapes because i'm quite inept with the transfer from 4track to regular cassette. so if you see a sound engineering tape anywhere, give it a listen and be nice to whoever gave it to you because they're a friend of mine. it's got guitar and flute and space echo and me singing shyly and some piano and little african sorts of drums. the simpsons: i've been likened to lisa. she's my favourite. the best was when she made gazpacho so people wouldn't have to eat meat at homer's barbecue, and barney yelled "go back to russia!". looper: i know there was already a toronto picnic, but i'm quite sad that i couldn't attend and that the fun and shenanigans happened without me. i don't know how many people are going to be seeing looper, but if you're going to be in toronto and would like some smiles and tea with a fellow sinisteree, email me privately (you know, that's not on the list, kids) and perhaps we'll have enough people for a game of twister. and if we have enough alcohol, we can play naked. it's july 19, or maybe i'm getting my months mixed up again. self promotion: please go to my website, it's http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Styx/3733 and it's full of photos and little stories and plenty of flesh. then write me mail telling me that you were there, and hello, and could i please explain the story? maybe you'd be more likely to visit if i told you that someone said i reminded them of isobel. well, it's true, they did. black box recorder: i've got the england made me epee, and it's nice but i don't know if i'd want an entire album. mind, i've only given it a few listens because at the same time i got several gorky's epees and have been trying to decipher the words that often pretend to be english and mess with your head when you're half asleep. swearing off b+s: i've always tried to ration them, because once iyfs really hit me i was smitten and it's like when you have to tape your hands to your sides to keep from phoning your new crush because you know that the phone will just ringringring while he's at work and the only satisfaction you'll get is hanging up on his machine. er, what was i saying again? i've forgotten. Dearest List, Oh,the first day of my summer vacation!! Let me capture this fleeting moment forever,if only you had witnessed my euphoria yesterday. On June 15th I had 6 hours of exams. First 3 hours of Math and then 3 hours of Physics..Yesterday, expecting the worst,I asked my math teacher....and I PASSED! This isn`t the usual `oh yay` this was truely...my heart lightened,I ran down the hall yelping from the sheer happiness of it all!I could`ve kissed my math teacher (and let me tell you,he has none of that sexy substitute teacher appeal at ALL) I can finally burn those notebooks. The other 2 happy moments have been 1) buying an awesome sports bra,I`m mesmerized by the engineering of it.This isn`t a `oh giggle giggle,let ME tell you about my undies,sir`. I heartily recommend it,sporty ladies. It can stretch,and then go back to it`s original form.It laughs in the face of cholrine and sun bleaching.Sugoi ESP. Tag mentioned Wimbledon. Well I`m getting exciting for tennis too.My teacher is a 75 year old man named Hector and he has trained the MASTERS. Martina Hingis, watch OUT honey.With this miracle of fashion sports wear,just WAIT! I swear,half the fun of things is buying all the little things that go with it. Adidas tennis skirts and matching socks,ohhhhh... 2cond happy moment was reading the story of the Fox and The Army of Christ.My favourite bit is when the fox pees on Stephen. The ending was very good...who would have thought that sweet fox was so evil! Is there going to be a sequel to that story? Ok..around my house,deep in the mountains, we have wolverines, and they are NASTY things...after they kill you, they pee on your carcass,and it is a stench. My god,what an awful animal huh? The final insult..you can`t even be left for dead in peace. The wolverine should be a character in the next story. Yes,I admit, I go overboard with records I really like sometimes.(I have strange little things I do with certain songs too.Like,when I`m in the car and when we are crossing over this one paritcular bridge i HAVE to listen to a really good,soaring song.)I listen to it too many times,I really should savour it more so I don`t wear out it`s appeal.The last Belle and Sebastian I listened to was Lazy Line Painter Jane because you all have been talking about it so.I think I might get out If You`re Feeling Sinister. Ha ha...I remember the first time I heard it (first ever taste of Belle and Sebastian) I thought `what a strange voice he has`,it was much different than the voices I`d ever heard before...I`m proud of Stuart.Those lunges have really developed... and there was a time in my life when I wasn`t actually attracted to Suart Murodoch.I find this very difficult to believe, but our relationship has grown steadily.Yes..soon my pretty,soon. The last record I went really nuts on was Hefner. That Darren...he`s got some power over me.Ever since Sister Disco said he was like Austin Powers I can`t get that image out of my mind.Does he say `grrr baby,very grrr`. Ooh my,is it hot in here? Listee Dreams: You know,I think I know why I don`t get any list crushes...I creepy you all out,don`t I? I`ve dreamed of Tag,Tim Hopkins,David Moore and now Trousers. But don`t be scared, it`s not like I`m a man or something..ha ha,why that would be preposterous!(fancy word,bonus=10 points) I know you`ve all had enough of the Simpsons but I just can`t resist.. We only get about 3 channels,(4 if the weathers good) (and all the french channels here are a little too racy. `Modern Dance`..ahh,yes, of course.)and everyday for god knows how many years,when me and my brother come home from school,we`ve always watched the Simpsons...the simpsons reruns are by far more enjoyable than anything out there.I`m sad to say the newer Simpsons I dont find very good..it`s trying to be more `zany` than satire, and always ends up in a song and dance,but geez after this many years,of course it`s bound to lose some steam.Futurama doesn`t cut it either. Father Ted has that wonderful quality though..I can watch those episodes over again. For NEW shows,I like the Family Guy. I agree with Ailsa in the fear of believing my 15 mins of celebrity are over.My Viva is ,fortunately,also over,so yesterday was a great day. How many people can tell than in less than 24 hours have been described as 'lovely' by UltraSexy Dasto(o)r,received a marriage proposal by our man in Finland,and sent a glorious tape by Sarah, Princess of Lancs.?And answered satisfactorily a few tricky questions on why the multipolar expansion breaks down.Eh?Not this latter for sure.What a Bloomsday! I am still keeping my no-BelleandSeb diet.I really needed some clean up time to be able to enjoy them again.On Tuesday night I met someone called Seb in a party and he didn't want to recognize his full name was Sebastian.Very odd.In spite of my zeal talking about 'Brideshead Revisited' as one of the essential elements in my formation.I didn't mention our boys as other reason to be proud of having such a name on your shoulders because this individual had pink hair and pink skater-like t-shirt and several piercings all over his bits, so obviously was too cool to be into our sect.He was not one of the 2600. Definitely there is something very cinematographic in Belle and Seb's tunes and lyrics, and it has to be in black and white.About glamorizing twenty something's drab existences, Angry Young Men's contribution cannot be neglected, but Morrissey's love for their iconography drives our theories towards The Smiths-B&S connections not very well cleared so far. About 8 months ago I went to escort my girlfriend (no, not anymore) to the trainstation. Well, we were just standing there, we had 4 minutes untill her train was about to leave. We smoked a cigarette and it started to rain. But we, we just stood there, not saying a thing and waited 'till the guy in the silly hat yelled "The train will leave in one minute!". After that we kissed for 42 seconds, holding hands, eyes closed, getting wet. And then she hopped to the train and I turned my back on her and walked away. So movielike. So... something. Just turned my guts inside out and I had this funny feeling that soon the director would yell "CUT!" and we'd all take a break and start working on the next scene. Which didn't happen, thank god. One of the best moments in my life. Ok, your turn. And this has nothing to do with anything I said before, but (krhm....): My own theory why som people write here so often: 1) They have too much time on their hands (well, pretty obvious, that one). 2) They need a place where they can get their voices heard, since no-one listens to them when they try to explain the small things in life to a person who they've never met before. I mean, theres 1000 people here who'll probably never meet each other (well some will or have already, but thats not the point), and we listen to each other (and sometimes comment on things we read in here). Well, try to explain to a perfect stranger in a bus about how you fail to impress women when you're too drunk and they'll just stare at you and, in worst cases, call the police. Hey, here I can do all that and more! And no-one gives you the bad eye. I hope. 3) They do it for sexual pleasure (I'm NOT wanking as I'm writing this, but who knows what turns people on? Me, I have a fetish for bare feet and short, clever females who have these big bambi-eyes, but thats another story). 4) They're just fucking bored. Sinister: can you still feel the butterflies?

Hello, those of the sinister persuasion. After not posting for about three months I've decided it's time to come out of the woodworkings of this fine list and say something. oh, first I feel I should apologize about something. a while back I had asked if anyone would send me a tigermilk tape and/or some radio sessions for a radio show I was doing on b&s. however, due to hotmail's dysfunctions I have no clue if anyone other than weejay gave me any offers. and by the time I was able to sort things out, it was too late, and I scrapped the b&s show idea. there's always next year, I suppose. anyways, I will be making a week-long trip to London the first week of July. had somebody mentioned a sinister picnic being held that weekend? how exciting it would be to meet some of the people who brighten my day with their witty, humorous, and occasionally thought-invoking posts! does anybody else like jimmy eat world? their new album, CLARITY, is great. dare I say it's the best record I've heard in a year. beautiful vocal harmonies, lyrics that ring universal truths (my favorite being "this is what she says gets her through it: 'if I can't let myself be happy now, then when? if not now, when?'"), great instrumentation, etc... at any rate, I'd highly recommend it not only to emo fans but to pop fans at-large. i've also been listening to teenage fanclub a lot lately. somebody mentioned a couple days ago that their interest in b&s has been waning due to overplaying them. with teenage fanclub for me, it's been much the opposite. for years I had underplayed them (for some reason I could never get into them), but now bandwagonesque is constantly in my cd player. such a great, overlooked pop record. and grand prix is great as well. thirteen also has its moments. 80's pop tidbit: in recent days people have mentioned elvis costello, the replacement, and the psychedelic furs. i'd have to say my favorite pop band of the 80's, aside from the smiths, is the Dream Academy. I find this somewhat disconcerting considering their hit single "Life in a Northern Town" (which is apparently an ode to Nick Drake) was chosen as a track on the "Pure Moods II" compilation. they also had a song on the soundtrack to Ferris Bueller's Day Off. does anyone else remember or like this band? well I know I had more to say but I've forgotten what it was so that's all for now. Sinister: record's freshness date/The Who->/etc...

I've been lurking for a mighty long time and feel sorry that I haven't felt happy enuff to contribute to the list but with personal breakups of relationships, divorce, etc.. its kinda difficult to open up and look for the brighter side of things at times. Regarding the freshness of how many times to listen to a B&S record or anything for that matter, I guess it depends upon the listener and the type of music. IYFS was a steady player for me as well as Tigermilk, although I played IFYS much more and never grew tired of it. After being all too familiar with B&S, TBWTAS didn't get as many heavy plays since from the get-go I liked select songs and still do and jump around more with that one instead of playing it all the way through most of the time. Old improv jazz is my main passion since I listen to it (and some classical) and get different reactions or responses to what I hear with repeated listens more than most current pop. There seems to be much discussion of the Who-> on the list as of late. I don't see the connection to B&S but its cool. "Quadrophenia" was my mid-teens high school record that got me through my angry angst-filled years and I appreciated most of their work up through Who Are You. Even caught them "live" once in the 70's. T.Rex has always been my fave British band since about 1972 when I was a wee lad. Any Bolan fans amongst the list??? I always liked the fact that Bolan was too British for most audiences in the US to understand. It kept him more exclusive for he few here who understood his many musical directions of psych folk to pop to soul etc.... The Tyrannosaurus Rex from 1968-70 and early electric T.Rex of '70-71 is the bomb to me!! This little missive DOES contain some very loose mention of B&S, so I hope Honey won't mind. Godard is VERY different from Homer Simpson, let me assure you all. Let me just say that I think the film snobs AS WELL AS the Simpsons addicts are integral parts of Honey's brilliant list; I happen to be both. We are all B&S fans, we have that in common, and I think we can assume that despite our differences in taste, we are all intelligent and deserving of respect and a voice on the list. Also with bits about "The Children of Marx and Coca-Cola" it's just too intelligent and sweet to not associate with our beloved Belle & Sebastian. Legrand's music for Godard's My Life to Live is in my top 5 film scores ever.
