There were also several other v.v.v. dodgy performers, WHO slip my mind at the mo, but I'll have a good look at the advert tonight. On the subject of trying to rile Tim Hopkins into posting more: THE BEE GEES ARE GREAT (ESPECIALLY THEIR LOVELY VOICES (AND TEETH)) WHOever it was WHO was asking about working in records stores, I've noticed that the large chain stores seem to be more interested in whether you've got an in-depth knowledge of working tills and stacking shelves than any musical background or knowledge at all. You'd think training people who know about music to use a till would be easier than training someone who can work a till about music, but that's multinational capitalism for you. I've also got horrible nasty hay fever at the moment, hence the subject line. I used to get a really wheezy chest from it until I started smoking (I think it's deadened the sensitive bits)(missus), now it's just nose and eyes. And when I sneeze I sneeze at least seven times in a row, oh well at least I'm not doing exams any more (and my heart felt sympathies to any sufferers out there who are). At least it's an excuse to take lots of drugs. Speaking of which I saw 'Human Traffic' last week </tenuous link> and it's ACE! I'm not a regular dance-y kindof person and I've never taken E, but I still found it very funny and could still identify with the characters and the situations. Basically if you've taken drugs or even just watched other people take drugs, or just got revved up about going out, you should, IMHO, see it. Magpie Jay, Senor Droolcup and myself have been discussing setting up a webring for all your little Sinister Websites. Stephen Pastel has a new club in Glasgow called "salute", as in "I salute you, sir". But what does that wee thug actually know about saluting? Has he ever been in the army? No. But he was in The Army of Christ (well he thought he was). Read on, my daring chums...... The Army Of Christ ================== One Day Stephen Pastel grew weary of his evil ways. The stench of drink, fags, whores, lovely heroin and cockfighting sickened him. His withered frame was that of a malnourished 10 year old, not a 50 year man. Please, please I beg of you, no more Simpsons. I love The Simpsons as much as the next person. Maybe even more (though I too get tired of certain episodes after a while - only last night I had to fast forward through Santa's Little Helper's Operation in favour of Miss Krabapple's Lonely Heart) but surely there's a site out there that can accommodate everyone's "My favorite bit/episode/character/line etc etc"?? And how much fun must that be, eh? Please don't react angrily to me: it has been amusing to read everyone's faves, but there's a time and a place isn't there? That said, the best episode is the John Waters one ("We work hard, we play hard". And my computer plays "I am evil Homer.." every time I get new mail from one of you lovely sinisterines much to the "amusement" of my work colleagues. Oh, and in relation to the Kimberly-initiated thread about men, my ladyfriend obsesses about them just as much as I do (and does a better impression of Mr Burns). It's maybe because she says I am like Homer. Actually, that's what my mum says about my dad too. That said, I do sympathise indirectly - most obsessions about this sort of thing tend to be harboured by men. Apparently it's because we're all semi-autistic (there was a programme on BBC 2 about it). And this is why B&S are so great - there's no easy way to explain it, but it really does seem that the amount of girls who obsess over B&S nearly approaches the amount of boys (although at Tigermilking there did seem to be a 3 to 1 ratio of boys to girls..) If anyone has a theory, I'd be interested to know. All I know is that somehow it feels like a healthy obsession, presumably for the same reason, and not one that has to hide behind closed doors (unlike, say, certain individuals' obsession for Royal Trux.) (Oh OK, my obsession). While I'm on this subject, I too have found myself tiring of B&S sometimes, when I've listened to them too much. But this happens with so many things, even Royal Trux. I reckon it's like rechargeable batteries - put them away for a little while and when you get them out again, the listenability will be topped up to normal again (or abnormal, depending on how you want it). Except unlike rechargeable batteries the piles or whatever they are don't get worn down every time you put them in them. There's a pun in there somewhere but I'm not even going to try... Anyhoo, point is, I have a really boring walk to and from the tube and stepping out of the house of a morning and walking up the hill with The State I'm In/Track & Field/The first one off TBWTAS that I can never remember the name of... will always put a spring in my step. I do find their capacity for bringing joy to the heart just remarkable - they're one of those rare bands whom I cannot imagine why anyone with any sense/taste/sensitivity wouldn't at least like if not fall in love with (unlike Royal Trux, sadly). And that happens all too rarely. In fact, despite finding a handful of bands indispensable to my travelling tape collection when going away, and a good many others too hard live without, I cannot think of another band about whom I think there's no reason for anyone not to like them. But it's normally a good test if Mum's like them. (though my mum also quite likes Alan Parsons Project which was a fad round our house a few years back. Quite a few.) On another thread, it's nice to have seen jolly old Jean-Luc Godard raising his ever-so-clever head on the list; for all the Satie fans out there, certain of his pieces pop up in a Godard film but I can't remember which one. So you 'll have to watch them all to find out (I wish you luck retaining your sanity). Oh, it's not One Plus One, though I definitely recommend that. Keith's never looked so cool. (there you go - two threads in one. Nearly.) And it's not King Lear either. Anyone who does want to watch the whole Godard oeuvre would be advised to do themselves a favour and skip this one. It's not worth it, even for a laugh (it's the one Quentin Tarantino said he'd been in figuring no-one would have seen it. He was probably right, and surprisingly for one who is so consistently wrong and such a prize twat, on this occasion he was more or less right). I thought it would be amusing, I thought it would be a good boast, but no. I mention it here only for humanitarian reasons. You have been warned. The only excuse is for Woody Allen completists. Or Molly Ringwald obsessives. And I know there's some of you out there. Nice also to know someone else (Arantxa) remember's Winona Ryder's citing the Replacements as her favourite band (this would be about ten years ago). Apparently she followed them around everywhere (isn't that called stalking?). In the same breath she also said Tom Waits was her favourite and so I went out and listened to Tom Waits. So much did I fall in love with his brand of bitter sweet adult lounge music that I never got round to listening to the Replacements. Did I miss out? Incidently, this was the same article (in Sky) as she mentioned she never went anywhere without a copy of Catcher In The Rye. Good name checking, I say. Mind you, the guy who shot John Lennon, whatever his name was, never went anywhere without a copy of Catcher In The Rye either. Go figure. I wanted to put more Belle & Sebastian content in but I fear this is probably long enough as it is. Sorry. I love you all spoon xx PS Funny no-one's mentioned that B&S are going to be cartoonised and feature in the next series, with their own rendition of the theme tune. (apart from Jordi). Sinister: if harsh, chain!

I am rising to the occasion, and at the behest of Jennifer, I will post about the DC picnic and how much fun we had! it was really great. everyone was so nice and friendly. and the setting could not have been better- the creek in the background, the green leafy boughs...ahh. and i have to tell you, it was a feast!! lollipops, olives, cherries, pita/humus, baguettes, sour peaches (yum!) and salad that we got to eat with our fingers. :) lots of alcohol, of course, and the conversation couldn't be beat. watching the croquet game (and getting to play for 2 rounds) was a nice highlight for me. as was Sam's hilarious comment: "christa, are you going to get tanked tonight?" i didn't, but i did get to pee in the woods, something i haven't done in about 4 years, and it was fantastic! my photos should be around shortly, i'll send them to honey (none of the bathroom break in the woods though, sorry). about the simpsons thread- i love it!! and i have to tell you that it is absolutely NOT a guy phenomenon. it is my favorite show and i think i am one of those people who quotes lines from it too much. i can't help it though, its just so witty and smart. oh, how i adore it..... i think my favorite line (that's like trying to pick your favorite child) is in the film festival episode when Hans Moleman says "I was saying Boo-urns!" i hope some of you know what i'm referring to. i had a dream last night that i rented out this huge old plantation house and we had a sinister party there. catered food, and more croquet and parlor games- and we were all dressed in Great Gatsby-era clothing. you know i would be totally up for that. :) "There will be hunting, charades, and ever so many delightful romantic misunderstandings" -christa +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Greetings, Hi, my name is Corinna Dusk and I have just joined this list. Duh. I am from South Australia ... if there is anyone out there from this part of the world, don't hesitate to mail me. For about 8 months I thought I was the only Belle and Sebastian fan in my entire state, until I heard a few TBWTAS tracks at a local "indie" club, which freaked me. Fans have since started to crawl out of the woodwork. Yay! Erm ... I have had a lot of fun reading all your posts in the last couple of weeks. I was tempted just to lurk, but I really wanted to find out if any of you would say hello to me. Unfortunately, I am not in the least bit twee - am I rather prone to sparkles and loud silly things. My current attire: mauve fluffy cardy, B&S tee, and knee length blue paisley skirt. Hrm...that's a little twee. But the twee-est I get, honest. Is twee-est a word? I have a short and sweet community radio program, in which I've been indulging myself by shamelessly plugging B&S as much as possible. My co-host was momentarily pissed off, but last week she asked me if she could tape some off me! Tomorrow nite I am going to see The Judas Kiss, a play about Oscar Wilde. The boy playing Bosie is absolutely beautiful. I think that all I had to say. Wait - * I am a girl, and I love the Simpsons. So there. But as far as cartoons go, I prefer Aeon Flux and Batman. Hello everyone, First of all, if anyone's written me about that NME CD, and not received a reply, that is because my computer suffered a slight crash and many an unread e-mail was lost "out there somewhere". But no one needs to re-send anything as the matter is already sorted. Second, I seem to be meeting a lot of Isobel clones these days. On Monday I had to sit through There's Something About Mary when visiting a friend who talked me into going with him to visit his cousin, who looked very much like Ms. Campbel. And a few weeks ago, when I was doing a nice 10 hour exam, a girl who looked just like that picture inside of the cover of The Boy With The Arab Strap sat just a few rows in front of me and, needless to say, it was highly distracting. This girl I later saw on the local Bergen piazza (of which Marianne gave such a vivid description) and she was being bothered by a drunk old man and I wondered if I should go up and tell the man to leave her alone. I mean, is this something that would be considered chivalrous or just rude "he's just acting like a gentleman because he wants to pull"? Anyway, just returned from being called a bastard by several 13 year old girls. I would not let them listen to a Vengaboys single more than once. Boom boom boom. For those who care, Jason Pierce has sacked his band in a Mark E Smith stylee. There was a massive row and Jason gave Sean Cook a royal beating. Okay not really, 'twas via a letter. But still, the Spiritualized that were seen and loved on the last tour is no more. Bugger. Erlend

Sinister: a little bit from Column A, a little bit from Column B

There is a bit of B&S at the end but while we are on the vein, here is one of my favorite Homerisms (when he is scolding Bart for stealing): "We live in a society of rules. Why do you think I took you to all those Police Academy movies, for fun?!? Well, except that guy who makes noises, (motor noises and other hilarious facial expressions ensue)....what was I saying? Oh yeah, stay out of my booz!" Oh god, I think I almost ruptured an organ when I first saw that scene. I rewound and replayed it probably 5 times. I guess this train of thought could really be applied to any band, but I was lying on my floor last night with a candle nearby listening to BWTAS and started to question the amount of time I spend listening to it and other great albums. I take a small amount of pride in not resorting to distractions for the most part, but is music really a distraction if it is so beautiful? When I listen to a great piece of music, I find myself almost paralyzed in the sense that I can't bring myself to do anything other than succumb to it. If I busy myself with something else, a certain percentage of my consciousness is unable to pay full attention to the music. So, consequently, when I listen to music, I get nothing done, and I listen to music A LOT. When I watch TV, read, or amuse myself with frivolties, I usually am consciously aware that I am distracting myself from reality, but with music am I somehow subconsciously validating it because it has the ability to make one transcend reality without realizing it? Yeah, it is art, but where does one draw the line between indulgence in art and mindfulness to the here and now. After having said that, I realize by listening to music I would have to be in the here and now but it seems like an elitist here and now that is untouched by reality. I'm not sure. Well this may be a case of over-contemplation, but I just wondered if any of you out there have ever thought the same thing, well at least similar things.
