Now the kid has gone to bed A feeling of dread At least when she's around the trouble's there It's worse to wake up with her falling round the room The song was written for a particular part of the Acid House - a book by Irvin Welsh that was made into a movie. The book is several short stories, the one Slow Graffiti relates to is called 'Soft Touch'. Without going into too much detail about it the story is about a couple - the guy is named Johny. His 'wife' is sleeping with the bloke upstairs. She is always coming in late - in the movie she has been prostituting herself for cash - falling all over the place and waking him up. Then she ends up having a NASTY affair with the bloke upstairs - none of these people have a great amount of money or morals, if you know what I mean. The part of the movie that actually uses 'Slow Graffiti' is where Johny is downstairs listening to his 'wife' take it violently up the backside by the bloke upstairs. The baby they have is awake and crying. And he is trying to console both the child and himself. Later, for his troubles, the bloke upstairs and the 'wife' kick his head in and rob him. It's very grafic, but also a great movie/book. Irvin used music by Arab Strap and the Delgadoes - both bands wrote music specifically for portions of the movie where it would be used. So, there you go. Slow Graffiti is, in my humble opinion, one of the best songs B&S ever wrote. Anyway, hope that answers your question.... Hello there! I'm one of those newbie nursery people who've broken loose... I'm nursing a Paula Cullen Booze Explosion "amps-turned-up-to-11" hangover today, so it'll be (relatively) painless... Imagine a job where you have nothing to do all day except for listen to CDs and muck around with E-mails and the 'net, as I believe the kids are calling it these days... Imagined? Good - that's what I do. 9-5. 'Tsa tough life. What I'm actually supposed to being at work is far too boring to talk about on this big chatty-room thing, though. Just trying to let you know that if you write an E-mail and you think "God that's crap, everyone'll be so bored they won't read anything I'll do ever again", fret not, 'cos, hey, I care :) The last two weeks of silence have been great not only 'cos you didn't have to put up with me, but because just sitting here reading all the E-mails has led me to the Buena Vista Social Club - good recommendation, whoever that was. So, here's a book mention... Try "The Diving Bell & Butterfly" - if you don't have great patience for reading, it's not very long, due to the fact it was dictated using only the blinking of one eye. Which is pretty fantastic in itself, but the book's even better. It's not small enough for the tube, alas... I live in Bristol, which, contrary to the creamed-rice ads ("OO-AAR!! It's Ambrosia!!!" etc.) isn't full of cows and rolling hills. But it is pretty shit - no hope of B&S playing here, I guarantee. Any other bumpkins on the list? Or are you still trying to find out if the little-man-who-lives-inside-the computer is hungry? Hey, we can laugh at ourselves in the West Country... I'll keep it down to a minimum, promise. Here is a quick reminder to anyone who had forgotten, or never knew about the DC sinister picnic this Saturday, June 12. Its going to be in Rock Creek Park at picnic grove #9, from 4pm to dark. It'll be a potluck, since its right around dinner time... so bring food and bevvies and games or whatever. I think there may even be a croquet set there, and the effervescent Tom is going to supply us with a box with which to amplify compact discs. Isn't that right Tom? Come one, come all. I'm sure it'll be a blast. Photos of listees in compromising situations are sure to follow, so if you're not there, don't fret. WIN THREE DOZEN FREE RANGE EGGS WITH BELLE AND SEBASTIAN! Has anyone seen those *fantastic* videos that Karaeoke machines have to distract you when you are reading the words? The lyrics of the song are taken entirely at face value, and converted to three-minute videos with a complete absence of abstraction. This is what I saw for Pulp's Common People: This neddish (common-people-looking) couple are dancing around in their woodchip-wallpapered flat, which, the camera has imaginatively panned up to, to show it is above a shop. They have neatly-cut hair. Night falls. A cockroach climbs the wall. She opens her address book at the "DAD" page, and looks concernedly at the telephone. Et cetera, et cetera. Anyway, my B&S competition is: The prize of 3 dozen free range eggs is on offer to whoever can produce a Kareoke video to Lazy Line Painter Jane that you could show to your grandmother. The (slightly contradictory) rules are: 1. No skipping out lines or verses just because they have rude words in. Or using st*rs or anything like that. 2. Skip out lines or verses you can't think of anything funny for. 3. My grandmother will be used as the datum of grandmotherly decency. She has been pushing up daisies for the last 40 years. 4. Hello everyone... I'm in a very happy frame of mind today as I got an unconditional offer for Glasgow College Of Commerce... I'm doing HND Social Sciences. If any sinisterines are going to be there after the summer, let me know and we can all harass the student union together.... Is anyone going to see GodspeedYBE at G2 in July? - I'd love to go, but I'd like someone to go with, as none of my friends are even slightly interested in trying anything new :( I tried to convert a friend to liking B&S, I played him Sinister, Arab Strap and LLPJ then asked his opinion. He said he didn't like them. I asked why, and he came out with possibly the most in-depth and definative reason I've ever heard .... "They're shite." That's it, that was his reason. He doesn't know why they're shite, they just are.... *sigh* Any sinisterines living in Cumbernauld? - it seems to have the highest population of neds and lowest twee count in the world..... I will make to a Glasgow meet-up one day.... Sinister: Glasgow meet-up (AGAIN? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!)

Hello, I'm here to apologise profusely to all non-Glasgow people but to say that a few of us are meeting in Glasgow at the 13th Note on Thursday at 6pm, and possibly watching Whistler in that self-same establishment, or just sitting and getting drunk as usual, whatever's your cup of thrills really. Please come along and make us all look like we have friends, or at least occassional aquaintances. If you've never been to one of these silly meeting things before, just come in and say "HELLO, I'M A BELLE AND SEBASTIAN FAN. ARE THERE ANY OTHERS LIKE ME ON THE PREMISES?" in an extremely loud voice, and we'll be the ones hiding our faces in our pints. It really is that simple. Oh, and on the thread of celebrity moments, I once stood behind former Really Wild Show presenter Terry Nutkins in a motorway service station queue. Not bad, eh?
