Hello there, yes, even you. I now have a voice after spending what seems like an eternity in the nursery listening to all of you others having fun without me. I am now here, possibly to stay, and ready to put across many zany and profound views. Hmm. Can't think of anything at the moment, but rest assured, you WILL hear more from the Romantic Scotsman. RE: objects in orifices; I haven't had anything up my nose, but I once had a ten pence piece (the older, bigger kind) lodged in my throat and had to held upside down and shaken violently until it was dislodged. I was 7, I think.... I am one of the unluck many who didn't make it to the first Bowlie, but I doubt I'll go to the second, as B&S aren't. Pity. If the fish are still unnamed, I suggest, Tricky and Dicky. That's all for today class, you can all go home now. B&S content...my dear friend Douglas sent me a tape of Tigermilk today...and his copy of the Jordan Knight CD...I haven't decided what to listen to first, isn't that awful? I may have a car going from the Princeton NJ/Bucks County PA area to Washington DC for the Belle and Sebastian fan picnic Saturday. Does anyone on the East Coast need a ride? At this time I have four vacant seats in a nice red Toyota Corolla, a lot of good tapes and some crazy stories for the 6 hour drive. Xavier-a bit of public flirting....I can't wait to meet you this weekend. You may have eavesdropped on my posts on the "other" list (teehee) but I quite like what you have to say on Sinister. To add to Chris's list about suburbia...I'd highly reccomend anything about Levittown Pennsylvania where my parents grew up. The whole history is crazy. I also quite like the book and film "Our Man In Havana" and "Lolita" for what they have to say about suburban teen girls in the 1950s. I know this sounds terribly shoddy but I forgot to print out the lyrics to all the unreleased songs that was passed around by the super Nick Dastoor, so I would be much appreciative if some kind soul could mail them to me again. I will forever be in your debt (or basement if Ian mails them). I finally heard some of these songs on various bootlegs and I fell in love with them. I thought "Pocketbook Angel" and "Lord Anthony" were incredible and I can't see why neither has been released so far. Didn't someone say that Stevie claimed "Wrong Girl" would never be recorded? Thats a shame...it really is a beautiful song. And for the final question of this bothersome post: Is "Landslide" an original? I heard the Bowlie and tape, and those of you who were there correct if I'm wrong, but did they bring in backing singers? Thats song sounds so 60s girl-group-pop, like the Supremes and whatnot I had to ask. Gosh Isobel is even lovely when jumbling her between song thanks...:sigh: Apparently two other people beat me to the punch about the Bob Dylan thing so I apologize for deluging people with redundant babblings...apparently I'm slow on the draw. Sinister: Dylan in the movies

Don't forget that Bob Dylan was also in Pat Garret and Billy the Kid, for which he wrote the AMAZING soundtrack. He was also in Renaldo and Clara ( or is it Clara and Renaldo, I always mix it up) which he made, and the forgettable Hearts of Fire. "Don't look back" was a Bob Dylan tour film shot in like '65 or thereabouts, so I'm assuming they're one and the same. I've never seen but I have a friend who worships it. I apologize if anyone else has already responded to this as I haven't read all my sinster messages before writing this one. Sinister: B&S Content!!! (and some other stuff about films, books, and the suburbs)

A brief post from lovely Portland, Oregon. If Seattle is a brand new Ben Sherman shirt, Portland is the one you got at the Goodwill- maybe a little more scruffy, but with much more personality. Ian asked if Bob Dylan was ever in a movie. He was in a documentary, a very famous one by D.A. Pennebaker, called "Don't Look Back". So, if you don't look back, you're like Dylan in the movie. I couldn't possibly be the only person who is aware of this. Rebelstrange posted about Hal Hartley directing Beth Orton's video. A very cool video, BUT: I myself was privileged, as a film writer/reviewer (put those tomatoes down, please, you don't even KNOW what I'm going to SAY yet!) to see a preview of the 'Book of Life' before it ran at this year's NW Film Festival, and it was really, really bad. I quite liked 'Henry Fool' and feel PJ Harvey can do no wrong, but Hal Hartley has a problem, and that problem is that you can practically hear him from behind the camera, telling the actors to please try to read the dialogue he wrote as if they're as impressed with it as he is. It taints most of his films and really ruins the Book of Life, which also has the disadvantage of being MTV slo-motioned quick-edited to death, and with very dull and obvious 'humour'. Polly Jean looks drop-dead cool in it, though, and it's only an hour long, so if you do the Peej you may be interested in seeing it just for that. The pick of the hip, New York-dwelling American indie film litter is, by far, Mr. Todd Haynes. People are posting about Mark C.'s dream of suburban America- well, lads and lassies, to get the real deal on Suburbia, USA, first watch Blue Velvet and then watch Mr. Haynes' [SAFE] (and THEN move on to Todd Solondz, whose films are good but not quite up to those levels. Please don't see them out of order =). [SAFE] is easily one of the best films of the 1990s (and in my opinion, EVER!) and gives you humane, empathetic (though very objective, detached, and Kubrickian on the surface) treatment of the Suburban Condition as channeled by Mr. Haynes and the lusciously red-haired Julianne Moore. Please, anyone who's seen it, chime in with your acclaim of it! The whole Sinister list must see [SAFE]!!! I know people slagged Velvet Goldmine (Haynes' long-awaited follow up to [SAFE], a cruelly underrated glam-rock epic) because they didn't understand what it was supposed to be (a lovely, gaudy-colorful, glittering, bisexually erotic glam-rock fairly tale with the 1970s as the Emerald City and the 1980s as a dark place ruled by those twin Wicked Witches, Reagan and Thatcher), only what they simplistically wanted it to be (a Bowie bio-pic, which it was NEVER intended to be). I'm still deciding whether or not to start a Todd Haynes fan club (do people DO things like that?!!?) but if anybody else is interested or even knows what I'm talking about please to be letting me know. For further REAL revelations on American Suburbia, refer to "The Ice Storm" (book OR film, both marvelous). Also, a new book by A.M. Homes called "Music for Torching", imagine "The Ice Storm" as a madcap satire/comedy. I guess A.M. Homes is semi-celeb in the UK for writing "The End of Alice" and getting it banned everywhere and starting a national discussion about pedophilia and sex. People are talking about John Updike on the list and he's also essential reading for the excavationists of that place we call the suburbs. For a very UN-real and UN-serious view of Americana Suburbiana, see John Hughes films 1984-1986. They're not very good but they're very sweet and charming and fun to watch. Not so much "Sixteen Candles", but "Breakfast Club" and "Pretty in Pink". Nobody should ever, ever think anybody's life anywhere is like life depicted in a Hughes film. Ian asked how the boy gets his picture from his computer screen to Molly's in PIP. The answer is, it's just pure cheesiness, somebody thought it would be 'cool' and they put it in the film even though it has no basis in reality. It's a part I've mocked each and every one of the THOUSANDS of times I've seen Pretty in Pink. 'Cos it's one of my favorite films. "Don't Look Back" is a behind-the-scenes Bob Dylan tour movie about the down side of fame and the music industry -- a sort of precursor to "Meeting People is Easy" but with a lot more ideas -- so its all pretty literal: "Don't Look Back, like Dylan in the movies." Dylan also was a cast member in that Clint Eastwood film that "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" was recorded for, the name of which escapes me. Off the subject, has anyone tried the 7-11 convenience store's new fruit coolers? (except they spell it "frut" with an umlaut which I can't make on my computer although I'm awfully sure that the option key is involved. Why they do that and what the German lang. has to do with fruity, creamy goodness I have no idea).
