Hello everyone. After being allowed out of the nursery I have finally plucked up the courage to make my first forays into the big bad world of the Sinister list, so be nice to me... Having very little of interest to say about myself at the mo, I just thought I'd comment on how it makes me laugh that armpit hair always provokes long and serious political debates. Personally, I prefer a universal, neatly trimmed approach to said follicles, regardless of gender. But then I am moulded by the anti-hair propaganda omnipresent in our evil repressive society, and nobody can help being a product of their times, as any Marxist fule kno. Before I go, I did actually have a reason for writing this, and perhaps even more surprisingly it actually has something to do with B&S. It's my birthday on July 12th! That means I'll be down at Trash in Soho, unless my plans go haywire (and this is quite a regular occurence). If anyone else down there sees me, come up and say hello! (I have a tatto on my arm saying 'la beaute est dans la rue' and a sickeningly beautiful Slavic best friend). It would be nice to meet some other, like-minded people for a chat... Bye! Sinister: a new york picnic

Sinister: Proof that I have too much free time

Hello All, Just this morning I was thinking about the comments people have made comparing the Smiths to Belle and Sebastian; I came to the conclusion that there is no comparison what so ever. I recently re-listened to some Smiths albums and I realized that they no-longer hold any importance for me at all (except as nostalgia), and the reason for this is the complete self-absorption of Morrissery's lyrics. As I 16 year old I was fascinated by songs such as HAND IN GLOVE, but now all I can say is, "who cares." Not to say that the song is bad (I do think that it is a good song), but the sentiment, the emphasis on the "me" did not appeal to me at all. Thus the difference with Belle and Sebastian (also the difference between 16 year old me and 30 year old me). Both the Smiths and B&S have lyrics that are "sad" but the lyrics of B&S songs seem to find comfort in this sadness; a "we all have bad times, but we will get over it" tone. And the characters in B&S songs are more sympathetic: the characters of Smiths songs, to me, seem to invite nothing but pity. Maybe this difference is due to the difference in the (look out, pretentious word alert) zeitgeist of the 80's and 90's. The 1980s was a time of every man and woman for his/herself; all was about making money and having more toys than the next person. The Smiths were seen as a reaction against this, but I feel that their self-absorption fits right in with this attitude (I know Morrissery was an advocate for animal rights, but this does not take away from the egotism of his music--I am talking about music only). B&S have a wider world view, a very 90's world view, where almost anyone is able to place themselves in the situations of B&S songs (emotional if not actual experience). Listening to a Smiths song one has the impression that every lyric is about Morrissery and his obsessions; listening to B&S one has the impression that they have a view that goes further than their nose. Another way for me to put this is to use an example of what some critic had said about the Beatles: the Beatles music and lyrics was seen as comforting, aurally wrapping their collective arms around the listener. I think that the music of B&S is similar because even though the songs may be sad, so many people (from what I have gathered from postings) listen to B&S and leave feeling better. One final point--the fans. Fans of the Smiths took on not only Morrissery's "attitude" but also his look. I remember hordes of teenagers dressing like Morrissery: the hair, the glasses, even the hearing aid. There was a cult of personality around Morrissery that does not exist with B&S, and this lack of a cult of personality around B&S is not only another difference from the Smiths, but is also a very good thing. Sorry this was so long, but I did try to condense my thoughts. I hope my point comes through. Sinister: Picnic time is here again

Yes, it's ANOTHER Glasgow meet-up :) Sunday, somewhere, at some time, as long as I end up at Hefner in the evening (assuming my tickets have been bought). I'm not very good at organising these things, really I'm not. Can someone else fill in the time and venue for me please? There are at least six people I know of who will be coming out to play on Sunday and we want more. Lots more. There were LOADS of you at the Gentle Waves one, and I haven't seen hardly any of you since... Transatlantic presence for that genuine 4th July feel from Youn, the opportunity to play football with a genuine footballing Sinister superstar (but bring your shinguards, just ask Mark C), erm, the opportunity to see if B&S really do stalk Sheeny Sarah, the opportunity to see me drunk. It'll be just like Bowlie without the chalets and the bands and the beach and 2600 other people and actually that's a crap analogy, but it'll be a laugh. Probably. It may be a picnic in Kelvingrove Park again, and can I advise girls and cross dressers not to wear your skirts too short, as you look foolish when climbing fences/leaping onto bandstands. All this talk of proms. It was my graduation ball on Saturday night, I swanned around looking most unlike my usual scruffy, be-duffeled self in a little black cocktail dress, high heeled shoes and lots of make-up. I danced to the Macarena, drank a gallon of red wine and had lots of fun. At least I think I had lots of fun, I can't actually remember. I had a B&S badge on my handbag, and I did ask the DJ to play B&S. He played Whigfield instead, which was, dare I say it, a lot more fun under the circumstances. No exciting bands played at our ball, it was an extremely low-key affair. I would have loved dodgems and carousels and stuff, it'd have been just like the end of Grease... Can I just apologise to those who haven't got their Bowlie tapes yet (and Rob too, your cheque is, as they say, in the post. Except it actually is). I beg forgiveness of you all, it's just that I have been working and my evenings have been running away with me, and so many of you wanted tapes. NONE of you have been forgotten, it's just that I have had a hundred and one things to do, flat-hunting, working, blah, blah, you don't care, anyhow tapes to be despatched shortly. Sorry, really really sorry. And sorry to everyone else for the complete lack of interest value in this post. Go and read Lesley Jo's last post again to make up for it. helloooo, sinisterites! first off, big P!R!O!P!S! to lesleyjo for her smart and well-articluated response and defense of Freedom. women can damn well parade around in tight dresses and heels (so can men for that matter) if they want and still be "liberated." as lesleyjo put it (better than i can), it's about the choice.... soo... on that note, i attended NYC Pride yesterday! -- the gay pride parade and other assorted sundry activities on the 30th anniversary of stonewall. there we were, in the 90-degree heat, on christopher street at the site of the old stonewall inn where, 30 years ago, bunches of dykes and queens and in-betweens decided that enough is enough and caused a lovely riot. the parade was awesome, and was like a veritable show-and-tell of the tons of different kinds of people that make up the gay community. oh, and tinky-winky made his way in there about 3 times! so... 5 hours, and i was sunburned and my throat ached from cheering the marchers on. a lovely lovely day. anyway, whether or not that was interesting to 75% of the list (tongue in cheek) i don't know. but the sheer variety of adults, students, kids, and little purse-carrying purple dolls in the parade and the crowd of on-lookers was amazing... and, i don't know, it was neat. um, will any of you all who are going to the july 23 looper show in nyc be posting on the meet-up board on the jeepster site? or something? i would love to rendez-vouz (i can't spell!) before the show... and kimmy, our favourite pittsburgh sinisterite, is driving all the way from western PA just to see the show... la la la la la . . . . take care. love, marie === *********************************************** * "if you can hold yr breath * * you can touch the sand with yr hand" * * -karate * *********************************************** _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
