Hello, Today is a good day. Wake up with a hangover and tired and get a brief taste of what life must be like for the beer stinker Paula Booze Explosion... and on a school night too! Then in my drowsy state realise both the Pavement and Dr Robert albums are out today. Hurrah! Then I get an E-mail at work asking if I want tickets to see The Super Furries. Hurrah! Then I get a phonecall saying my All Tomorrow's Parties chalet is booked. Thrice Hurrah! Admittedly my ticket currently costs £210 as there's only two of us but it all works out in the end doesn't it? This unhealthy optimism surely can't last. Maybe I'll do something really daring today like talk to someone on the bus home. Maybe not... And a big "Hi!" to Kimberley. I'm too am reading "Rabbit, Run" at the moment and enjoying it a lot. Though ,unfortunately, I can't think of anything witty of intelligent to elaborate upon this and it would probably be annoying if I mention anything after page 20... Oh and Salinger's "Laughing Man" is a fantastic short story too so I'll agree with whoever said it was. Sorry I'm too lazy to look. Nine Stories is brilliant, particularly because it just about fits in my trousers pocket. If anyone can recommend me any similarly small books it would be cool as those tube journeys can be very dull. oh my, so much talking. i think that the fratboy thing is probably something that is certainly seperated from b&s. some people are good and some are bad, some want to be in frats and some don't. all groups will have assholes and nice people. it's the same thing over and over. there are definitely problems with the american public school system. and i find that in a great many places, not just school, there is little tolerance for people who have different ideas and tastes from the norm. i found that life got much better when i learned not to give a shit. mind you, it took awhile, and sometimes i relapse, but i find it very helpful overall. er, alright, that had nothing to do with anything. i'm sure i got negative miller points on that one. about a year or so ago there was an article in vanity fair written by a woman who had had a relationship with jd salinger when she was 17 and he was in his early 40s. it's an interesting article. i'm of the sort that enjoyed catcher in the rye, but i tend to think he's overrated as a cultural icon. but then, he's one of those people where people don't just like his books, they tend to LOVE his books, and they tend to fixate on them and forget to read other books. and they tend to annoy me until i want to beat them. on bomb threats, the other middle school in my town used to receive bomb threats all the time. you see, when a school receives a bomb threat, the state law makes it pretty much mandatory to not have school for the day, as everyone needs to get way far away and stay outside while it was thoroughly searched. it seems that these threats often coincided with test days. there were never any actual bombs found. my recent project has involved attempting to cultivate marketable skills. it's not working very well. xoxo megan mkl206(a)is8.nyu.edu who are magnetic fields? http://www.dissemination.com/megan/magneticfields/ updated 4/26/99 +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Frats...sororities...Greeks, just another subculture of the mainstream with organization, dues and housing facilities. Yet America is filled with movies about the misfit frat (you know, consisting of members that would never be in the other frats) somehow rising up and dominating the other more typically preppy insidious frats. That this usually never happens in real life is the first earthshaking revelation of mine. In a way it's a microcosm of real life. Some choose to hang with people who need to be impressed by you in order to accept you, no matter how much/little money you might have. It's all about isolating yourself into smaller and smaller subsets as you grow up. Which route you choose depends. In college I associated with one frat in particular though...they were the "anti-frat," i.e. yes technically they were a fraternity but they were the "misfit frat" like in the movies, only with more drugs and musicians and long hair and that kind of stuff. Not really sure what the point was--just seemed to re-affirm in some weird way the "conformity of non-conformists" if you catch my drift. But they were happy in their weirdness and anti-establishmentarianism. One could argue that the indie scene and its various subgroups are a kind of frat/sorority. You got your look, your uniform. You got your dues (i.e.Tigermilk, all the right/newest albums, tickets to shows, etc.). You got your initiation rites (past as riot grrl/punk boy, listening to a mixtape, making the mixtape, making your own zine, having a band, knowing someone in a band, dj-ing, knowing someone who dj's, knowledge of obscure bands if only by name, etc.). You got your snobbery (say against people who, when asked what kind of music they listen to, say "I like everything really!" when they mean everything on VH-1). It's just a different consumer culture we celebrate, that of the little guy/girl trying to make it (thrift stores, indie labels, your friend's band, etc.) rather than the monster truck corporation ruling the world (band playing the local Enormodome, J. Crew, Drakkar Noir, etc.). Not that I'm arguing that. I'm just sayin', someone could say that.:) In other news, has anyone experienced the radio format of Jammin' Oldies/Gold? Here in Philly one of our modern-rock stations (which in itself seems to be a dying format, oh well), 95.7, just switched to this format. It's great, '60s/'70s/'80s soul and R&B music. Unfortunately at the moment there is only a robot running the station (no human DJ's), so while that does mean more rock and less talk, there has also been a little too much "Night Fever" for my taste. Ditto with Donna Summer. I only heard "I'm Coming Out" once so far darn it! (Apparently the old DJ's were told 15 minutes before the format change that their jobs were null and void...that kinda sucks for them, but radio format changes always seem to be like that. Whoosh it's gone) But in principle it's the best thing since...the Philly sound, really, and you have to wonder why it went out of style. The oldies stations do their part in playing that stuff but sometimes you just want nonstop soul and upbeat R&B, back when it was exciting and not the flaccid "R&B" we know today. A friend of mine pointed out that the popularity of this format across the nation might wake people up to the fact that there has been very little good R&B for the past fifteen years... Hi. Do most of you people write your Sinister posts when you're bored? Well, I'm going to do that now so bear with me. I'm not sure if there's anything I have to say so sorry about that. Oh yes. A Spawny Git claimed to have been out drinking and stuff. Yeah right! Methinks he was sitting alone in his bedroom re-watching Blue Velvet for the millionth time. :) A girl (sorry I deleted the post and my memory isn't too good) wrote about her delicious substitute teacher. Don't say that! As I mentioned in my last post I am currently working as a substitute teacher and the thought that all the 12 year-old girls are lusting after me is highly disturbing. I mean, it's bad enough having to deal with the constant giggling and pointing and peculiar looks and I don't need to hear that this sort of thing is actually normal. I have two weeks to go. And another thing, why the hell do I never get this sort of attention from girls my own age? Maybe that's too much to ask. But anyway, if anyone out there is a teacher, how on earth do you deal with this sort of thing on a regular basis? Does anyone here like rap music? Do you listen to that Westwood chap? Is he taking the piss, or is he actually the most hilarious creature ever let loose on worldwide radio? I was accidentally exposed to some of his show last night and he struck me as the sort of person who is probably beaten the shit out of everywhere he goes, what with his "cool" Yankee rap slang and all performed in his slightly stoned English accent. Oh, cool. I just came up with some lovely harmonies for Neutral Milk Hotel's "Holland 1945". I think it's romantic to be in love with a girl who died two decades before one was born. Does that make me sick? That reminds me of John Peel introducing Stereolab the other night, he was talking about his new sexual body donor card. It's not the kind that allows doctors to use your body parts for medical causes. Oh no, this is a card that allows people to shag you once you're dead, if they should have the inclination to do so. This I think is a very tolerant self-sacrifice and as such surely at the forefront of goodness. The card also features a small box to tick if you object to your body being dismembered during the act of naecropheliac (probably wrong spelling, never really learned to spell that word, funny enough) sex. Oh, by the way, if anyone wants to hear that Stereolab session I'll gladly trade copies for something nifty. Whilst I was in the nursery there was a thread about things up the nose. I've never actually stuck anything up my nose, but I remember one time I was eating some extremely spicy tacos when suddenly I choked on some meat and then it went up that secret passage between the throat and the nose so that I had found myself with very, very hot Mexican food coming out of my nose. That was not pleasant, not at all. As for an ideal childhood I think that would have to involve living somewhere in Yorkshire on a farm. When I was younger my favorite TV series used to be All Creatures Great And Small and I thought that whole country practice veterinarian (sp?) thing looked very romantic. Which was probably silly of me as I now can't see anything romantic about having to put little rabbits "to sleep" (when officially the rodent's just off to live with some kid's aunt, in Scotland.) and sticking your entire arm up some randy bull's bum. Okay then, I reckon that's about enough. I'm off to drink all the Martini my younger sister keeps in her closet hiding it from our fanatic teetotaller-parents. Chin chin. Many on this list would give their early Felt 10 inch (ahem) to be in this position - you know who you are... BeN mentioned AC Acoustics, and asked if they were any good. Not at football they ain't! hahahahahah! Etc. Still, if anyone wants to talk about Senseless Things, boy, do I have some stories to tell...hang on, no I don't, heavens mark, get a grip! Natasha was nice about me. I feel all warm now :) Props (I like it, I don't know what it means, but I like it) to the Sinisterines who came to the Oxford picnic, even though most of them didn't seem to be on Sinister at all. Apologies to Enthusiastic Pamela Hutchinson (and her neighbours), who we kept up till god knows when singing B&S songs (of course) and getting far, far drunker than was decent. Or that may have been just me. David's e-free mail (just say no, kids) reminded me of that French bloke what wrote a whole book using only the vowel e, and then got bored and wrote a whole book with all the vowels but e. Bet he got picked on at school too. Kevan Cooke is a shady, shady man. Full of surprises. Just to make myself seem even more appealing, I went jogging on Saturday morning. Physical exercise doesn't get a lot of press on this list, partly thanks to Honey's Stalinist attitude to footie conversation (put "World Cup" into the Sinister search engine and marvel at the fact that it *never happened*. No, really :) But I actually did it, much to my surprise, as did Miss Vicky, and my legs only feel slightly agonisingly painful two days later. Exercise is the new rock and roll, kids! You can tell I have nothing to say. When I have something to say, I write long paragraphs. Lucky escape, I reckon :) Everyone in and around London must come to Upstairs at the Garage this Friday night. I'll get me coat. goodmorning, listerines. oooh, my first time posting from work! how sinister. it's b/c my train got me in supa early today, so no one is about on my floor just yet... grrr -- i saw Notting Hill over the weekend. i like hugh grant quite a bit, but i don't like julia roberts, and i think i was expecting a cross between "four weddings..." and "sliding doors" ... and that is Not what i got. ah, well... aarrghhhh! i move to end the fraternity/sorority system rubbish from permissable list discussion! by speaking of it, you give it more power. okay, that's all i have to say about that. i tried to introduce a friend to b&s this weekend. in fact, he Requested that i play some for him... but, alas! he usurped the cd player and made me listen to nsync and backwash -- erm, backstreet -- boys instead. he then kicked in with, you Don't like whitney houston???? incredulous. *sigh* i tried, friends, i tried. but what power hath a littleknown folkpop group over the juggernaut that is really bad dance music? hey, any nyc/area listees going to see Joan of Arc on june 26?? want to meet up with me? i'm afraid i'm doing it solo thus far, and i'm a bit nervous... take care, (and kisskiss! to poor miss kimmy of the bloody nose), xoxo, ree _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? good morning you lot! that subject line is plagarized, so i must give due credit to john updike because, well, he's the one who wrote it. it's a sentence in the very beginning of "rabbit, run" which i am reading right now (well, not at this very moment but, well...) incidentally, i've only started the book--i think i am on page 20 or something, but that's with small print and everything--but i really like. and i guess that that quote relates to me in some way because i just came back from having a morning sneak o' the ciggy (a mint nat s!) i just saw (in the bathroom after the cigarette) that i had a bloody nose last night. it was really faint, dried, crusty (ew, sorry), etc. because i literally rolled out of bed, grunted a few times, put on the clothing i had yesterday (including my cute new shoes), and stumbled out the door--never once looking in the mirror. maybe i knocked myself in my sleep (i'm v. self-abrasive). but i just thought that that was rather odd considering that the last (and first) time i had a bloody nose was in ninth grade when i went to the bathroom to escape geometry class. anyway, i DID have a reason for posting and acting as a litter bug to all those 1100+ inboxes... oh yes, i believe it was the adored lesley jo who suggested that b&s have a gig at the warhol here in pittsburgh. and i say "yeah, what a wonderful idea": and if the don't readily relent, then let's tie them up, give them a little bloody nose and force them too! wow, i'm not really that violent (actually i abhor violence). but i DO tend to get a bit obsessive about things so maybe that's the reason for that sudden outburst. on the subject of fraternities/sororities, at my school, they actually formed from these debating societies of the school (i had to write an article about that). but it really depends on the person. yes, i don't understand why people would pay to be part of a group like that but i understand that some people just *like* it. i know that my mum joined a sorority because she had no friends who were female. i also know a seemingly friend of mine who joined a fraternity and then stopped talking to me and avoided eye contact. but i also have a friend who became much nicer to me after he joined one (though he wouldn't take me to their formals--when he needed a date and i said i would go with him he laughed at me). so the majority are like that, but there are some lovely exceptions. anyway, here i could add all my troubling years of growing up without friends (sadly, unlike jessicaxo, with only bad top40 music until a few years back) but i'll go now instead. i think my nose may be bleeding again, KIMberry xx +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net".
