......here is the review of Tigermilk from the Metro: Belle and Sebastian inspire an evangelical devotion in those who get them, and contemptuous cries to bring back the Sex Pistols in those who don't. The long-awaited CD edition of their first album Tigermilk, recorded in five days in 1996, is released today, and although it compromises the mythical status that hangs over Belle and Sebastian like a halo (the limited edition vinyl copies alledgedly change hands for £800), it also disrupts the idea in the opposition camp that Belle and Sebastian are little more than a bunch of fairies at the bottom of the garden. I'm with the evangelicals. Tigermilk is a bit like a piece of silver, an album that becomes more lustrous with familiarity. These are songs with resounding strength and depth, feistily pretty rather than soppily beautiful. They possess a rhapsodic coherence that, quite simply, makes sense. And each is a beguilingly quiet horror story of abuse, insanity and alienation that belies the exquisite sound in which they are crafted. There are damp moments - notably the jarring scarth of Electronic Renaissance - but every other song, from the edgy folk-pop swing of Expectations to the fragile We Rule the School, weaves a sublime but disquieting spell. i think its nice that someone else has started their own record company. just as long as you all remember that I DID IT FIRST, therefore I AM OFFICIALLY BETTER. if destroyed true nyah nyah etc. deadhippy records, remember? anyone? actually my brothers running it on his own now because i didnt want a part of it anymore because we differed ideologically or something like that. but the problem is hes a MUPPET and USELESS at EVERYTHING so i have to keep pointing him in the right direction ie ghostwriting his ENTIRE website for him. okay, so it might be a more traditional type of label than martins technologically minded one. we are, after all, luddites. but my latest genius marketing masterstroke/ pointless gimmick (delete as applicable) for the website is a signup page. you just answer a few simple questions and you get sent a certificate proving youre an official member of the deadhippy family. i am a genius. i am. but dont go looking for it yet, were not putting it up until some time this week, when we kick out the cowboy builder. html is a doddle once you know how, eh? my bands will probably eventually get records out on deadhippy subsiduaries. BATFINK, ill say that again BATFINK, on historic records (heh heh) and second guess (doesnt need capital letters) on blackcurrent tunes (oh my sides). the reason its spelt blackcurrEnt is because big-buddha-belly-ben spelt it wrong a million times on the website and couldnt be bothered to change it, so we decided it was cleverer that way. and it is. you know we dont stand a chance etc. see you later crocodiles from tjohn. dont go to the website yet, itll be better this time next week. well guess what? little 'ol me finally tried to get into a nightclub with a fake i.d. which i borrowed off of my friends, friends friend.(it looked nothing like me and i'm 16 and it said i was 20, but whatever) and the reely nice bouncer obviously did his job by asking for i.d. but then turned the cheek and let me and my freshly 19 year old friend into see a truly exciting show. it was wierd at first and i felt kind of uncomfortable but i got used to it. anyway, there has been many a band that has come to vancouver and played the starfish room and tonnes of them i would kill to see. but for some reason i always seemed to let them slip by, but not this one. looper and iqu. i've been listening to iqu (electronic/acoustic(not in a beth orton way though)band from olympia) ever since their debut 7" appeared some 3 years ago. so i finally got to see them live and it was great. the stand up bass player had real showmanship and their entire set had the entire club boppin' their heads. nice. then on to looper. well for me this was a dream show and i think the rest of the crowd felt the same. we were highly responsive to looper but for some reason the band was kind of in a slump. stu d. in between every song cussed and complained about how the sound was shitty and how they couldn't hear themselves on stage. (nick's note: it sounded wonderful and all the instruments were at good levels and i'm not quite sure why he was complaining so much) also they stopped playing dave the moonman about a minute into it cuz the guitar player kept messing up his parts and stu'd bass seemed out of tune with the music etc. and karn apologized to us vancouverites for having to watch their roughest show. stu said that if we wanted we could try and get our money back as well. it was a really nice (but breif) set and they capped it off with to my knowledge a new song Y2K. that song is amazing! in my opinion by far the best in their repitoire. which leads me to ask if anyone knows when this song will be released. (new 7"? ep? single? album?) and also if anyone has a live recording of it or something that they could send my way (we could trade, just email me) or at least if someone could write out the lyrics for me and send them cuz they are so great. that would be extremely nice. well there you go it was a great show. and i usually don't write this much cuz it's a pain for all you guys to read but i don't post very often so i guess it's okay. take care, .nick. Sinister: tigermilk vs. elephant shoe

sinisters i was sitting on the train yesterday morning at four am, coming home after a late brilliant show with modest mouse. and i come to wonder something about our friends belle and sebastian. how has the release of tigermilk effected your thoughts about them? i was wondering, has the magic gone away? is there less mysticism about the band, or is that just a dumb idea popping into my head? i know there is a lot of different aspects of the re-release. for one, i now hear "she's losing it" all the time on the radio. whats the deal with that? i wouldn't be suprised if tigermilk pops up as one of this weeks most played records on p3 (swedish radio). i was almost choking myself the other morning when i had my cup of tea and i picked up the local white trash paper in which they compared the release of tigermilk to to the release of the new star wars movie. it obviously also got five stars. next to three four country records being reviewed. i now what you are all thinking, "well now atleast everyone is able of hearing this masterpiece" and i'm obviously aware of this and i defianly think everyone should. this has nothing to do with the fact that i liked being the only boy in school who had tigermilk and that all the girls begged me to tape it for them, aye. obviously now they won't. but it is not about that, it's about the tale of belle and sebastian, brutally changing or should i say, evolving? i'm probably make you all hate me even more, but i'm actually looking towards on hearing the new arab strap cd "elephant shoe" more then hearing the new belle and sebastian album (ooh well, let's just call it "the boy with the arab strap 2") - and i'm basing this on that unfortunatly i may fear that belle and sebastian are not evolving as good as arab strap, seeing that philophobia was better then the boy with the arab strap and if you're feeling sinister was better then the weekend never starts around here. and to be honest with you, i don't know if i like "winter wooskielf" and "family tree" that much. but i'm probably wrong cuz no one has ever done a record as good as tigermilk, so now i'm going to quit, calm down, ok? i'm over the counter productive culture, johan = sinister bakushi(a)hayfever.net www.hayfever.net __________redblueyellowrecordings____________ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Hi, people: The latest invention of the Sinister mailing l ist is a new label founded by one of its members, it can be the new home from Luna, now that theyŽve been sacked from Beggars Banquet. It seems such a good idea that I want to be the spanish A&R for them. I suppose that Martin is going to pay me new suits and trips to London. Andy wrote: "oh, news from the LA gig was that stu d seems to be enjoying it. 'he was happy and chatty, nothing like he usually is" Oh, at the Bowlie he was very kind with the audience. Maybe because he looked funny with the headphones in his ears. And at the B&S gig he seemed to be the least nervous member. If everything goes well, then in a few hours iŽm going to get my legal copy of "Tigermilk", after hearing at least a 1000 times the tape that Stu G. so kindly sent me. Can anyone, either a member of the list or a member of Jeepster, sen d me one of those promo postcards ? I hope that at least somebody will scan it and send it to either to the Jeepster or the sinister page. If an yone can send me one of these postcards, the prize is still the same: a copy of the Barcelona gig. Yesterday I saw of the most amazing film that I?ve watched over the last three years, The Red Violin. ItŽs amazing how there is no distributor in Spain who thought about taking some copy in the english version. The fact is that is based about the history of an old violinwhich has the most amazing sound in the world, and maybe we can draw some paral.lel lines about the old discussion here trying to find out how old was IsobelŽs cello. You never know where you get your inspiration. IŽve also been attending a lot of Hitchcock movies that are being projected near my place, and in "Strangers in a train" mr. Al fredo appears briefly taking a cello with him. Maybe it travelled to Scotland later, you never kn ow.... iŽve decided to end myself saying "bye, little fl ies" at the end of my mails, just in order to not offend anyone. Sinister: Big Brother Is Watching You

Hello Sinistereens, I'm not 35, not 30, 25, or even 69. I turned 21 about an hour ands a half ago. I wonder when exactly it was that I woke up and started writing e-mails as if I was 35. Hm, oh well. I'm still mad that I can't make my birthday complete by picking up a copy of Tigermilk. I'd wager it sounds much nicer than my old beloved tape copy. But, I don't think I'll be donating my copy to be used to make a kilt to be worn at next year's Brit Awards. There are several reasons you might consider keeping your old tape copies: 1) Sentimentality 2) If you don't have a CD player in your car, or a discman, you can listen to your tape copy in either of those lovely locales. Personally I think listening to music whilst driving is the Ultimate Listening Experience (tm). 3) If you have anything else on side 2, you'd have to give that up. I'm certainly not ready to. Anyway, I'm going to wildly diverge in topic so as to confuse you. I had a nice time at the NYC picnic yesterday. Megan and I sat around at the bottom of the hill with a TWATTYBUS flat looking at passersby. Unfortunately no one pointed at us and squealed. I sat for a little while in a sunny meadow reading George Orwell's 1984, which is honestly about the strangest contrast of reading material/locale I can remember being in. So we combed the entire park looking for the other picnickers, and met with no success. We sat down for a bit and were considering giving up and having our own picnic when we saw Ben, who pointed us in the right direction. On the way we ran into Emanuel and Marie, and we found Laurel in a spot we'd looked at some time earlier. On the whole I had quite a nice picnic, even though we didn't really have any drinks and I think everyone mainly ate their own food, except for the very popular peaches. I think the quality of the picnic was due in large part to the park's ban on bikes. Thus, none of us had to fear that our ankles would be viciously assaulted by anything whatsoever, unlike the last picnic I attended. Ben and Laurel had to go, so we went to see lots of medieval art and tapestries involving the slaughtering of unicorns. Quite nice, except the slaughtering bit. Well in the end we all had to part ways, but it was a nice time. I heard Lady Penelope and someone named Matt were at the park but couldn't find us. That's a huge shame, because Lady Penelope sounded so interesting from the posts I'd read, and I'm sure Matt was equally so. Maybe we can all meet up before the Looper gig. Yes, so in the end Megan and I went home to be poor, which is actually a rather time-consuming and costly undertaking. So Megan paid the leccy bill and got the shopping and she still had some for the cinema, so we all went out. Er, out to the video store anyway, which is a cinema, in a poetic kinda way. You know when you grope for Luna. Right, and if anyone's the least bit interested in what I'm doing, just imagine lots of expletives and the words "Tigermilk," "tomrrow," and "damn," exiting my mouth at seemingly random intervals, gratuitous playing of the Montgolfier Brothers album, and turning some multiple of 7. Sinister: megan rules the school

hey, ho, sinister... megan rules the school for having called an impromptu (sort of) nyc picnic for yesterday afternoon... after a slightly awkward moment when emanuel and i tried to pick each other out of the crowd at grand central station (um, just look for the Other indie kid), we were on our way to the cloisters -- beautiful old church-y things in a museum, and pretty grounds... we took the soft and fluffy elevator from the subway to the grounds: soft and fluffy b/c there were all these pictures of kittens and puppies pasted on the walls... how "belle & sebastian" (since that is now an official adjective). unbeknownst to us, laurel & Her Boy (whose name slips me, i'm sorry!) picked us out as sinister folk in the elevator, but didn't say anything... which is why emanuel and i wandered about the grounds until we saw megan and mick carrying a belle&sebby poster. i'd never have seen it, but Eagle-Eye Emanuel spotted it right away. anyway, it was neat to meet the few that showed. and funny to find out that mick mcmick is NOT a 35-year-old man, but a mere boy of 20, younger than myself -- sorry to blow yr cover! he gets major props for digging Used Kids, the best record store in columbus, possibly in all of ohio, possibly in all of the united states... :) la la la... as the picnic wound down, laurel & Her Boy went off to watch the women's soccer team (who, incidentally, kicked some ass), megan and mick went home to be poor, and the ever charming emanuel took me for a beer down in the village. afterwards, when we'd parted, i had an hour to kill (the only thing you'll kill is time) before heading up and west over to Tramps to see ted leo, cat power, joan of arc, and girls against boys. it was punk planet's benefit for Voices in the Wilderness, a group that breaks the U.N. sanctions on iraq to bring food and medicine over, mostly to children. (check out <http://www.nonviolence.org/vitw> for more info -- an amazing cause) but, the music! i'd never heard ted leo, and he rocked pretty good, i gotta say. cat power was beautiful and amazing and painful... but the audience was so rude and loud that she cut her last song short and said quietly, "y'all have fun tonight" and booked it off stage... joan of arc chided the audience, but to no avail. anyone who's heard JoA knows that a lot of their songs are super quiet, and despite my proximity to the stage i could barely hear some songs... blah! girls against boys were, well, bad. mick and emanuel had tried to explain to me what they sound like earlier, but nothing prepared me for this weird band. luckily i had to leave in the middle of their set in order to catch the last train out of the city. hhhmmmph! well, i'm sure i've bored you all enough. sadly, i don't have my tigermilk yet. i preordered it from jeepster even though i knew it would probably be quicker to just wait to buy it this week in stores... but i like the idea of sending my hard earned cash directly to jeepsta ... and of getting foreign post! so, i'll wait... patiently... sort of... take care, kids! xoxo, marie "Down with the Spectacular-Commodity Culture" -joa === ********************************************************** "I was a proper snob in college, as only a future lifetime English major can be" - b. glass (j.d.s.) ********************************************************** "to me she was just marie." -mersault. _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hello all, I've had a dream. I'm going to be the new Richard Branson, and by that I do not mean a bearded git who flies hot air balloon 9/10th's of the way round the world. No, I am going to start a record company. The above mentioned "Ear Confection Recordings". It shall be a record company for the next century, all songs will be on a web site in real audio for people to listen to and then maybe send off or a demo tape or something like that. Unfortunately, I am conceivably the most idle bastard in the world so I may need others help with this so if anyone's interested please mail me. First off does anyone know a good (free/ cheap) WWW hoster that has a real audio server and provides a good amount of web space? Other help needed will be Logo design (I got thrown out of art at an early age for throwing paper maché around), A&R (I can't trust my taste I have most Jefferson Airplane albums and no 70's Who) and lots of other stuff I haven't thought of yet. You can start a virtual career in the music biz at Ear Confection. Or borrow a 4-track and get your lovely songs heard. Yes, it shall be.
