Hi there everyone - this is my first posting and as a scottish person living in Texas, I've had to stop listening to NPR to get away from all the cliched politics which we're being hit with at the moment - it's all one big frustration! Anyway, are there any belles or sebastians around Houston who would care to arrange a pic-a-nic of our own, or am I to be alone with my wicker hamper?? as I was saying before I hit the wrong button.....no one ever looks at the land and think...."ok this is wonderful.....how can we protect it?" No, it's all about "oh I think we need another sub division or another shopping strip and maybe a big nasty golf course...which is just another place we can go to hide out from our kids and out wives." It sickens me. And it's nice y'know to farm and all that....but it;s not like the corn or soy they are growing is really being used for anything advantageous.....it's being used to feel livestock usually...which is sucking up our water and so on. I just wish the grains were being sent to countries like India and Africa to feed the babies and children. But no.....while the corporate bastards are out boinking there secretary...there children are home playing video games and drinking pop......which will soon be exchanged for porn and beer. It's all so icky. Ok....I'm sorry. I needn't have gone on like that. It was quite rude of me. I hope none of you read that. It has been enjoyable to read all the posts on Politicians. It's nice to hear what you all have to say. I wish I had some fun Belle and Sebastian info. All I can say is that I wish I was rich so I could take Stuart in the auction. Oh well. I'm off to the library. Sorry again for my rant. Hi, Isn't it so awful when you talk to somone you love and you can hear them being completely irrational.....and you can't do anything about it? Sometimes I think we have to simply detach ourselves. I think 5 years of hurt is enough for one girl. I keep saying I will walk away....and then the words that are said capture my heart again. Anyway. I had a lovely day. I went for a drive in the country after work. It was so beautiful. I listened to Lazy Line Painter Jane over and over. The thing about America kids....one of the things I should say....is that people don't take time to look around them. I think that's true of most places actually. But since I live in America.....well I really notice it here. I mean.....I live in Omaha, Nebraska.... farming country in otherwords. its really quite odd to me, i find that this whole discussion about politics truly shows how little i have in common with most people my age. most of you would prefer gore over bush.....i'm not going to mention nader because he doesn't stand a chance realistically. gore who would rather us continue to put all of our money in social security, so that by the time its our turn to get some of our so called investment back in our old age, there will be hardly any left to pay our monthly utility bills. at least bush is offering a sensible alternative, investing and controlling our own retirement money in strong stock options, while still giving 2% to our present senior citizens. this is making people responsible for them selves and not having the government there to say "we know what's best for you, give us your money to do with as we like" the cliton/gore crime family want to get all the credit to the booming economy, and prosperity of america. yet when they went in to office in 92, 21 million americans had no health care insurance. and now they whine that the number has gone up to 30 million....that's 9 million more people, they have had 8 years to fix this folks.....but of course its not their fault. nothing ever is, the democratic bias media will always make sure that anything the clinton/gore crime family will be presented in the most positive light. are you willing to waste your vote again for another 8 years of whining? i could go on and on about what's wrong with the they way they do things & i know you all want to slice my throat with a frozen soy burger right now, at one time i thought the same as you all do. all i am trying to say is look at what each man is saying, think about what they each have to offer. hello all of you. xpress, a free entertainment weekly here in rainy perth, carried an rather cliched article of belle and sebastian this week, where they interviewed mick cooke. there were a few interesting things though... stuart murdoch is apparently 'the most revered grump since morrissey'. stuart's a grump? In four years, with eight members, Scotland's Belle and Sebastian have issued four albums and five EPs. They make music that is oft described as 'fey', an apparent put-down from purveyors groomed on a dripped-fed diet of masculine rock and/or roll. Its pop music far from the maddening crowds, assembling it far from the pap production line, and they make it with a sense of mystery. Their names dont appear on the records, they dont pose for press photos, they make charmingly cheap promo-videos, and, most famous, their main songwriter, Stuart Murdoch, doesnt do interviews. Hes relented recently, at least on a couple of occasions, the phenomenal gathered success of the latest Belle and Sebastian longplayer, Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant, making the likes of Time Magazine interested in the Scot combo, but, still, Murdoch remains a figure at large. And, still, Murdoch remains the most revered grump since Morrissey. Stuart stopped doing interviews because he didnt like doing them, he found that he was misrepresented all the time, states Mick Cooke, Belle and Sebastians trumpeter and keyboard hand, speaking from Glasgow. Belle and Sebastian have largely shunned doing interviews at all. Cooke offers: From the start theres always been the idea that we want to avoid the celebrity thing. Its a scenario that has found glossy, well-credentialed magazines scrambling to talk to other people about the B & S phenomena: record-label types, folk from other bands, popcultural theorists. With this latest album, the band have found it important, however, to speak for themselves. Cooke has therefore been doing a lot of talking on the side of their rock n roll union. Weve found that when you dont do much speaking, then people step in and speak for you. I think its good that we havent layed the normal press game up until now, Cooke continues, because were sort of seeing that now, NME and Melody Maker are trying to knock the band down. But since they didnt build us up in the first place, theres not much they can do about it. By shunning the normal avenues of promotion that other pop bands scramble over lustily, Belle and Sebastian have stepped out of the carefully structured niches of music-marketing. Even now, as their popularity has soared, fans of the band still feel as if they have discovered something, as opposed to submitting to whatever heavily-hyped band is being thrust down the collective gullet. And, their fans, a reverent clique often compared to the army of The Smiths, love that autonomous feeling. Since their earliest days, Belle and Sebastian have stated that they wish the band to be a reflection of their lives, not their lives themselves. As such, theres a charming obscurity. At the start there was an unwritten agreement between everyone that the band wouldnt take over everyones lives completely, he says. And I think, to be honest, if it hadnt been like that, the band wouldnt have lasted even as long as this. Not taking over everyones lives completely also means, simply, no touring. Cooke chuckles that he could count the bands total live shows on two hands. I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that we dont have a record company telling us what to do, either. Weve got a very strange record contract. Most bands sign a contract saying that they have to do a certain amount of promotion. We dont have that clause in our contract. Which is, possibly, a bit of a band thing. I think that its band that this band has got to the stage where people are happy with what they get. I dont think thats a good thing, theres a risk of getting complacent. On the occasions B & S have played live, theres been a reverence at these rare shows that has, most often, outweighed the significance of the bands own performance. Sometimes wed play gigs and the loudest applause would be when we got on stage, laugh Cooke. And, then, the applause would kind of diminish with every song. It was almost like the biggest achievement was for the band to make it on stage, with everyone there. So, the question begs to be asked, is there a chance that Belle and Sebastian will, indeed, one day go out on the road and undertake a genuine tour? Possibly, but unlikely. Its a case of factionism. Being a seven-piece band, you cant please everyone, says Cooke. So, really, weve got about half the band that would love to go out on tour, and then half the band that would rather just stay at home. thank you for reading. all proceeds go to the clogs in the brain foundation. Sinister: Darth Nader

I'm a tad confused about Mr. Nader. A few weeks ago, i saw him making a speech to the "Green Party" (which mainly consisted of aging hipsters and health food store employees, but not necessarily a bad thing). I watched most of his speech and it seemed as if he went from the extreme left wing (good) to extreme right wing (bad). He started off anti-corporations, trying to help out the proleteriate, building houses, all that yummy socialist type stuff. After which he proceded to go completely opposite and started talking about, eliminating pornography and violence on television and in the movies, all that bad conservative type stuff. It upset me so much i changed the channel. Is there a reason for this? Was he just trying to sell himself to everyone? Because if thats the case then Nader all the way. But if he's going on some crusade for censorship, (Apparently the same one Lieberman is into) then i may have to head north and live with the Inuits. B&S Content They're great. Been a long time. Miss me? Astute readers may recall me whining about all the time I spent tarting up my website in preparation for a job interview the lst time I posted. Anyway, I got the job. it is my dream job. I'll be in the Flash animation team for Wendy Pye limited, which make subscriber educational websites for children. It is my dream job and I have been buzzing all week. I've been seriously underemployed for the last 10 months so I was getting to the end of my tether. Anyway ... onward! ***THE CHALET LINES*** I'm assuming that chalet line is a line of chalets. You know how they're normally laid out in long rows. ***NOW, MY TURN TO ASK A SILLY QUESTION*** Was listening to Jeff Buckley's "Grace" - a real evergreen of an album if you ask me. Anyone know what a "Mojo Pin" is though? I have *no* idea. ***SILLY QUESTION #2*** (Always mean to submit this to the FAQ page on the Jeepster site) Do B&S have a publishing deal? Virtually every band has one. For example, songs on REM albums are credited Buck/Berry/Mills/Stipe, and are published by Night Garden music. B&S are the only band I'm aware of who lack both writing credits or publishing information on their sleeves. Anyone know why? ***NME*** Felt a bit sad that Wayne from The Flaming Lips was slagging off B&S. I could kinda see his point. But then, B&S are a pretty straightforward pop band. They write poppy songs which, alas, the general populous generally doesn't care less about. As opposed to The Flaming Lips, who release multidisc albums which are meant to be played *simultaneously*, cover "Somewhere over the rainbow" and come on stage with fake blood pouring out of their foreheads. So ... umm ... which of those two are more entrenched in their indie ghetto? which brings me to ..... ***STUART DAVID*** Seems to be trying as hard as possible to sever all ties with the B&S camp. I wonder if he and Struan are still mates? I wonder if his tour with the above mentioned Flaming Lips has made him wary of being associated with B&S. Shame about him leaving Jeepster though. I wonder if Jeepster plan on signing any new bands soon? ***AMERICA*** A lot has been said about this country lately. So why not have my two cents or so. America is great. I've travelled around there a lot. The scenery is breathtaking (mmm ... Mojave Desert ... most amazing place in the world) and the people are almost unanimously friendly. I guess what irks me though, is that the majority of the people I have met whilst travelling there (GROSS GENERALISATION TO FOLLOW ...) have little knowledge, care or regard for anything outside of the US. example ..... "Where are you from?" "New Zealand" " ........ is that in America?" Or the American girl I met who was unaware of the fact that there was a "First World War" She'd heard of the Second World War, but didn't know there was one before it. I guess that combination in insularity and mild arrogance (if it doesn't directly involve the US it's not worth mentioning) really bugs me. Or how American publishing houses change British novels to make them more palatable to the "American market". Or how they bollix up UK albums (like Mansun's "Six") by rearranging the track order or removing tracks to make them more "commercial" or less difficult or something. It's insulting. Now I'm sure that these are isolated examples but they've really bugged me, and have coloured my views on the subject. Like I said, I REALLY enjoy travelling in The States. Goodness ... it really sounds like I'm slagging the US, doesn't it. Umm .. like I said, I really like. I've been there six times. By choice. I've visited about seven states. American politics bugs me too. Like you only seem to have two choices. A or B. Black or White. I don't know whether you can really have *true* democracy when there are two choices, even if you don't like either choice. That being said, New Zealand has elected a Socialist government under our rather complex proportional representation system, and they're doing a really good job of ballsing up our economy and turning us into a Third World Country. ***PEOPLE WHO HIDE B&S RECORDS*** See Wayne Coyne's comments about B&S. Indie ghettos are crap. Beautiful music is beautiful music. I attempt to inflict Belle & Sebastian on everyone I meet, because I love their music, and the way it makes me feel, and I'd like everyone to experience that. I'm certain they won't but the couple of people who have ended up liking them are now hooked for all the right reasons. And I can't see what's wrong with that. Exclusive little clubs really bug me ... it's so fourth form. If you're ever in a record store in Auckland and you see B&S records on all the shelves, that was me who put them there. Sinister: Speaking Politics and other things...

Hello all, I must extend my sorry for all of those who are not americans and wonder how politics comes up so much in a country with extremely low voter turnout. Oh yes I am now living in vermont, which is extremely well, pretty. I am also living in the only state now that allows civil unions(basically gay marriages for the unfamiliar) which is a big deal for those evil christian right people who are probably into bible studies and S&M, but not in a good sinister way. Vermont for any of those who are unfamiliar is a very liberal state, it has a significant 3rd party(the progressive party I think), and probably the most liberal end of the democratic party. On the national front here...I have to say a vote for nader is sadly a vote for bush...though I appreciate nader being in the race for the fact he has finally made the green party and environmental and labor issues a visable part in the US once again. I give him major thanks for that...which is part of his goal. Nader said from the begining of this process he wanted to move the democratic party more to the left again, or get the green party bigger...And it is probably right, both bush and gore have stolen nader ideas, even the republicans are starting to realize that people really don't like there kids getting sick from polution. Nader is grate in this respect...he knows he is going to be an issue candidate, and he has a clear focus, and realizes he will probably lose. I am a Green myself, and have been since I was 18... Oh yes, for anybody on the sinister list from Vermont or New Hampshire please email me. Oh yeah i have to write a paper...I am here for law school after all.
