Just a quick request for all of you lovely readers... As I have been so furiously downloading from N#pster the past few months, trying to squeeze as many songs out as i can before the courts shut them down, With horror i realize that i have run out of things to download! Perhaps i am just forgetting the names of all that bands who i heard and thought 'yeah,i'll have to check them out...' It is a pretty specific category though- those that you don't like quite enough to shell out the money for the cd, but those you like enough to spend a few hours downloading... So my question is this- does anyone have any recommendations for bands that i might want to hear? Preferably a bit Belle and Sebastian-y? And please don't assume that i have heard anything already- i'm extremely deprived. See, it has also occured to me that there might be a whole wealth of fantastic music happening ELSEWHERE and i just don't know about it. So now is your chance to rescue me from the clutches of destiny's child, korn, and limp biscuit. and the other 2 songs the california radio stations keep playing. in the centuries since my last post (ok, weeks. but in the 186,000 miles-per-second world of Sinister, i am light-years behind) i noted a desultory thread in re: the idea of content; viz, the pop culture and pop music. especially the articulations of Peter Miller and Youn J. Noh about the work of Lloyd Cole ... when i think on't, as i am wont, it arrives bearing the same blithe controversy that was being promulgated stateside in the 80s as to the 'canon' of literature as the West's abiding standard of shared references. the upshot of the ballyhoo was, simply, we are becoming low-class by lowering the academic rigors to admit, oh, stuff like semiotic revisioning of texts, african-american and feminist studies, offering MFA's in computer animation, etc. you know the type, right? (a lot of tosh and bother as to who was controlling the curricula...amounted to a few editorials and alan bloom's "the closing of the american mind" getting on the bestseller list for a few weeks. shows you how far down we are when we only get into these discussions when it becomes pop controversy, eh?) so, we are, in point-of-fact, in a post-literate society wherein the concept of a single, white-judeo-christian, english-speaking body of work is pretty much irrelevant, considering how multi-culti and polyethno have created incursions into the common lingua franca (is that right? maybe it means 'french tongue'? naw! couldn't be...?) to become the fair rate coin of intellectual exchange. oops. too much high-falutin' MLA-baitin' goin' on in this one. i should dele this but, as there are so many o-level or a-level or whatevers (never could make sense of your SAT process) and grad study folk on this list, i'd best leave it in in to show i'm just as foolish as ye. but let me shave it down. i do believe it was dr. johnson who said, in a letter (might've been to boswell-- might not): "I am sorry to write you such a long letter. I haven't the time for a short one." Which I take to mean, brevity is not only the soul of wit but responsible communication. (Unless he was being extremely Brit and meant that he hadn't time for 'a quick one'...which i understand means something altogether different over there. and knowing the good doctor's habits, one doubts he would EVER refuse a quick one.) but i digress. what i mean to say is that the allusions to books and movies of a certain era, the modern generation more or less, may 'date' the material, but that is also its strength. name-dropping (or, in rap, name-checking) is the way we transfer information packets (incidentally boys&girls, this is the ENTIRE foundation of the internet!--the very life's blood of our lovely little e-mail clusterf*ck) without having to go into graphic detail. when i say something like "clouds scudding across a spielberg sky" i am resonably certain that a fair percentage of my readers will be able to put the picture together without oil paint. or if i say "an application form as easy to fill out as an infinite jest book report" i, again, am willing to accept that i may leave a number of head-scratchers in my wake...and hope that the insightful will help to clean-up after me. i mean, c'mon! can anyone really say they get EVERY reference on this list? I've never noticed it in supermarkets but I have noticed that everytime theres been somebody in my house to do domestic repairs or deliveries (gas man, electricity man, delivery men or whatever) they always do that warbling whistle thing. It's never a tune I've ever heard but seems to be kind of organic in that it constantly changes and doesn't seem to be one tune in particular. I reckon it must be part of the training. The only other place I've ever heard them is on trains. Theres generally some old bastard sitting right behind me whistling away in that incredibly annoying, through the teeth style that makes the sound penetrate through even the loudest personal stereo headphones. Grrr. and Jan Imgrund followed: My driving teacher was possibly the best (or worst, depending on your opionion about warbling) warbling whistler in the world. *warblewarblewarblewarble* turn the next right, please *warblewarblewarble* no, not this one. How on earth are you supposed to concentrate with that? i suspect you've forgotten the one spot at which all gents whistle like a flock of songbirds: the gents; aka, the public urinal. seems to have something to do with the plumbing. Sinister: This is just a rubbish postie

Tranquille. Must be my favourite word, even though its not English. Calm, quiet. I was on top of a hill yesterday. My father lives in the countryside, and so when I go there at the weekend to visit, I have a number of square miles of Lochluichart to myself. Before I went up the hill, I took a stroll to a much-loved spot of mine. Tobys pool, its called. I once had a golden Labrador called Toby, and I used to take him there often. Tobys pool, is one of the most breathtaking places youre likely to see in Scotland, at least in my opinion. It is a small plunge pool, with a waterfall cascading into it. All you can hear is the water splashing, and the sight of the spray is quite tremendous. The sweet smell of the bracken, the petit gorge formed by the waterfall, the crystal clearness of the water, its perfect. I am so lucky, I can go there anytime at all. I take it for granted because I live in the highlands. Its just such a shame theres no-one else to share the experience it with. I was sat on a rock, thinking over what has happened to me since the last time I was there. Must be about three quarters of a year ago. My father got re-married. I got a band. I got a new girlfriend (not for long though, it seems), and Im now working my balls off in school to get into uni. A lot has happened, and I couldnt have thought it possible the last time I was sat on that same rock. I leaned over the water and took a gulp or five. None of that crappy bottled stuff. This was free, chilled, and the best water Ive tasted in a long time. Then I got up, and wandered up the hill. Once I got to the top -after quite a struggle, I didnt realise how out of shape I was-, I sat down on the long grass, and laughed, in awe, at how beautiful this place really is. The view was quite stunning. I could see the best part of the loch, because it is quite big. The water was so calm. The trees rustling below me, imitating the grass around me. The sky was overcast, but I didnt care. You could hear the whistling of the wind, which was little more than a breeze, but not irritating. I could see the cottage, as well as a few of the others sprayed across the landscape. It had been a while since Id been there. It is so peaceful, it would be the ideal spot for a picnic, though it is a bit out of the way. I stayed there, sat on the hill, for about twenty minutes. Watching the sheep graze about a quarter of a mile away. Trying to find any sign of civilisation, to no avail. Then I went home to watch some telly. Back in the town however, its shite. Schools shite, theres nothing to do at all. Oh, terrorvision are playing in Inverness in December. Thatll be fun. Dodgy played in Dingwall a couple of months ago. The shitest gig Ive ever been to. I cant wait till Im at uni. (Amy, I was planning to go to Strathclyde too!) Im going now. If youve read till the end, then your suffering has ceased. Sinister: Attention listee's in England!

Hello everyone! Some of you may or may not remember the plight of listee Janne Lardot. Let me take this oppertunity to refresh your memories. Janne lives in Finland. Now I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Finland but this is a bit unfortunate for Janne. You see, Janne is about to be plucked from the free world and place in to national service. There may be nothing we can do about this, but we can give him a jolly good sent off! So, here's the plan. Anyone who can make it, be in Camden Town on Saturday the 23rd of September for the Free Janne party. :] We'll probably start in the Man in the Moon pub by the lock but we're open to suggestions for later on. Hi! I'm very glad to be back among the sinister folk. I still remember the lovely times I had, um, reading your messages. Oh. You're still going, "Who? Who is back? Is this important? Will this interfere with my coffee and donut?" Well, (in my prideful voice) I believe I was (mildly) notourious a year or so ago as I followed the gentle waves all around England and then I yelled to Stuart Murdoch out my window on Hillhead St one day. Of course that was when I was of the young age of 19 and not the mature "almost 21" I am today. I am at school in Boston. At Berklee School of Music to be exact. And I'm very mopey over a silly boy I met in the Orkney Islands. It's a good thing I'm so close to so many lovely CDs here to cheer me up. I've taken to listening to Judy Garland, Ethel Merman, Shirly Bassey.... at the school library. That and I play my trombone with my eyes closed. fuck, there was one day when that dirty-minded psychopath chris lampiste wasn't posting any more of his amoral filth and nudity and such and i nearly thought it would be safe to come out and post something and then he resurfaced again bragging about hsi friggin' hips like he was a girl and capable of having real hips instead of fake crappy mens hips. i'm also really mad about being challenged to a naked picture duel. this hit a sore spot that i'm sure chris had no idea he was hitting. the fact is i cannot be seen naked. not that i can't get naked, but under my pants and t-shirt i'm actually invisble. how many people have fled my bed room in terror upon finding that the expected wobbly bits etc. were there but not there. a photograph of me naked would offer only a tantalizing view of whatever is lying behind me at the time. maybe if i wear some flesh coloured tights or something.... hey, i met the stars the other day at a tahiti 80 concert. does anyone else find that tahiti 80 sounds suspriciously like late U2 crossed with the sea and cake? anyway, having nothing to say to the stars i invented a story about being such a good dj that i couldn't actually spin in public as i would have to keep the adoring masses at bay with sticks. then there was this pineapple thing and . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . i was upset about missing the durian at the new york picnic. i'm a big fan of durian. its a staple of the summer barbeque season with me, swear. i often enjoy eating fruits that smell like feces/rotting flesh. or sometimes i just skip the fruit and go straight for the rimming. actually the ice cream ain't bad. i bought durian ice cream by accident because it was indistinguishable (in terms of colour) from the mango ice cream at the chinese grocery store. in fact, unless i go for a ride on my bike i only have chinese grocery stores within range, so my entire neighborhood is redolent with durian in the summer. i whistle in grocery stores when i'm not trying to intimidate people in the frozen foods isle by walking very quickly as if driven by some powerful inner compulsion. external compulsion sucks. one of the pleasures of shopping in chinese grocerystores is being elbowed all over the lower part of my body by chinese grandmothers augering for a better bag full of crabs than the next. actually, thats not called pleasure at all...thats something much deeper. yesterday i watched several episodes of queer as folk. thats not bad television is it? but whats with that little skull-faced girl who's face froze in one facial expression in the first episode and then it never changed? will her face fall off and break if she changes her facial expression? why? so onto other significant issues in pop. whats with will oldham's voice now? when did it drop an octave and become 'reliable'? as much as i love the rian murphy&will record it still isn't really what i 'look for' in oldham's catalogue. i am confused. i am confused like claude wondering why kathleen doesn't love him, only without dead flowers and suicide. although the band suicide are rad. although few bands in the world are as rad as devo. adam conover needs to get his head out of his indie pavement ****le and face up to the reality that devo are one of the most brilliant bands ever. never mind that the first four albums are the only good ones. most bands are only good for four albums, some bands are only good for three and a collection of very strong eps. devo changed my life in late grade nine. i fell into their nurturing plastic sheathed arms after grunge angst burned me out entirely. i took songs like 'through being cool' to heart. you can ask people who knew me at the time; for example, i wrote 'devo', about 400 times on the front page of ben's agenda. you can ask ben...i did this in french class i believe. i also really fell hard for elvis costello, but it was more fun being an excessive and overt devo fan because this was around '95-96 and it seemed more like a kind of provocation than thick glasses and ill-fitting suits. i missed olympic boxing on television yesterday, which made me remember that i miss g h dickie. fuck martinez, st ev en ka do +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Sinister: a black fox fable

hey guys I've come up with a new fable, let me know what you think The black fox woke up and yawned. She was curled up at the foot of Jubilee's bed. Jubilee was still fast asleep, the cat taking up most of the pillow. The Griffin was snoring loudly, sprawled across the top of the wardrobe, it's tail twitching. The fox sniffed the air. There was a strange smell, like compost and syrup, which was probably why she had woken up. She jumped down from the bed and padded quietly into the kitchen, where the strange odour was coming from. On the kitchen table, amongst the plates and chopsticks of the evenings Chinese takeaway, stood a small creature, about a foot tall covered in matted brown fur, longest at the scalp, where it was a gothic shock of rattails, shortest at the tail, which curled and danced like a snake. In each paw it held a pair of wriggling koi carp, almost as big as itself, another fish was rapidly disappearing down its throat. The fox barked and jumped onto the table and the creature let out a screech and dropped the fish, leaping back and bouncing onto the floor. The fox scooped up the fish and dropped them into the kitchen sink, nosing the cold water tap until a gush of water poured out and the fish began to swim in slow circles. The fox, satisfied that they were okay, turned off the tap and jumped onto the floor, glaring at the little creature, who belched in her face and cackled loudly. -Hey Phooka! Not seen you dogga-like before! The fox growled at the creature ~I am not a Phooka! -nah, you is! Phooka! There was a sudden thunk as a large pickle jar dropped over the creature, trapping it. The fox looked up to see jubilee in her dressing gown, jar in hand. She scooped up the jar and set it on the table, the creature still trapped inside. It was hammering on the glass and making rude gestures, the smell of vinegar was making it feel queasy. -I heard a noise, so I came out to see what was going on, Jubilee explained. She pulled up a chair and sat down. The creature continued to gesticulate and swear. -What is it, Fox? A boggart or something? ~I think it's a Spriggin. They're like boggarts but nastier. -What should we do with it? Do we kill it? ~No! Just let it go. -You said it was a pest, if we let it go it'll only cause more trouble. The fox sighed and shook her head. ~You cant punish it just for being nasty, that's just the way it is. You wouldn't punish cat for throwing up furballs, or the Griffin for scratching the sofa, would you? It's just the way they are. Jubilee nodded in understanding. She lifted up the jar and the Spriggin leapt up, grabbing a chopstick and waving it at her. -Would you like a sandwich? she asked politely. The Spriggin nodded, a little surprised at the offer. Jubilee fetched a slice of bread and, after a moments thought, spread it with strawberry jelly. She folded it in half and handed it to the Spriggin. It snatched the sandwich off her and bit into it, still waving the chopstick at her. When it realised what was in the sandwich, it opened the bread up and buried its face in it, slurping noisily. When it licked the bread clean it dropped the slice of bread and belched again, it's face smeared with strawberry pulp. Jubilee stifled a giggle as the Spriggin licked jam from it's paws. -He looks like a little Darth Maul! The Spriggin glared at her, the turned to see the Griffin wandering in, following the smell of food. The Spriggin shrieked and leaped into the air, scaling the wall and disappearing through a crack in the plaster, leaving sugary pawprints behind it. The griffin snatched the bread from the table and skulked back to bed, Jubilee and the fox sat in silence for a moment, both a little startled. Finally Jubilee stood up -I need a cup of tea. She picked up the kettle and went to the sink. The fox tried to look as innocent as possible. -Fox? ~Hmmm? -There are fish in here! Well, well. How are the little minions doing this morning? Swell, I hope! I just realized what you bastards have done to me. I've been listening to nothing but indiepop for the last few months. Today I fixed that. I rediscovered the joys of gusgus and Tricky and Massive Attack and and and and... Underworld. I picked up their new live album today and I can't say enough about how much I love it. I've listened to it start to finish quite a few times. Just lovely, lovely, lovely. I know what you lot are thinking- Underworld? How can I cry to Underworld? You can't; that's the beauty of it. That, however, is not why I am writing you. I am beat up and depressed. It's a chore to so much as leave my bed. The only things that can motivate me to stand up are cookies and cigarettes. My room is a mess. My dog misses me. My classwork is falling behind. I hardy ever work. I just want to sleep and cry my life away. I sleep for 12 hours a night (morning). I wake up and curl up under my blanket for an hour or so trying to get up enough courage to roll onto the floor and crawl into the bathroom. And then I go back to bed. Yes, infatuation does all this and more to a poor little boy. No, I'm just kidding. I'm doing quite well! everythingeverythingeverythingeverything I just had an all american dinner of all potato products! One plate of seven (7) mini-pierogies and one plate of twenty-two (22) waffle shaped french fries (slightly burnt) with one (1) medium-large squirt of ketchup (which isn't made from potatoes, but hey, tomato rhymes with potato so that's close enough for me, yes). And I feel like taking on the world!! I have the BEST schedule in history: 4 pm: breakfast 10 pm: lunch 4 am: dinner Somewhere in between there I fit in classes or work, but like, that's not really that important. What is important: That I Dance! my heart out baby! Dance! my heart out baby! That's how I've been spending my time. I can actually work up a sweat without standing up. I dance while I'm sitting in chairs. I dance while I'm walking down stairs. I dance while I'm laying in bed. I dance when my vision is red. My dog dances too. And my mom. I dance on the couch. I dance on the hood of my car. I dance in the garage. I dance in the road. Speaking of the road. I usually take brief walks around my neighborhood (yes, neighborhood you goddam anglophiles) when I go out for cigarettes and recently I've found myself skipping. Do you guys skip? Why not? It's so full of glee, it makes me feel warm and gooey inside like a certain *murmer murmer murmer* does. Everyone should skip!! So why don't you all tell me what you're up to now? I'd like to know, and this is true!
