has anyone noticed that sometimes b+s sounds really hard on headphones? good headphones mind. listen to "seeing other people"... yeah, that rockin' stevie guitar line! sounds like a punk anthem, woo! ... well, except for the piano and struan, anyway ... why do we call struan struan? i never understood it. just like i never understood twee until my friend lizzie told me. lizzie is going to come visit me here at college! (or uni, as you bonnie-lies-over-the-ocean people say) this makes me happy. she is staying for days and days, and it will be a crisp fall day, and i bet it will be wonderful. pavement is the best thing in the world. especially on vinyl. i had the opportunity to buy legal man and fishyclap on vinyl, but i decided to stick with cds... but all my pavement is on vinyl, oh yeah, including crooked rain crooked rain with the insert 7" that they only put out on like the first 1000 copies or something. unless i'm just crazy. i also have a lot of devo that i bought at the same time, also with an insert single of "workin' in the coalmine" (goin' down down), but i don't know if that's rare or not, and i also found out that i don't like devo all that much, and i bought three records of them. worrisome. - adam +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. ok. so i have officially moved and am living in the lovely town of munich germany. moving from detroit michigan was quite a shock, but took me little time to adjust. that is until yesterday. yesterday marked the beginning of the 'Oktoberfest.' this festival of massive amounts of beer being consumed has brought every tourist with nowhere better to go here. last time that i checked this was germany and last that i checked the national language is german. this doesn't seem to matter to those from the lovely united states of america. they seem to think that the national language of the world is english. this isn't true. even i, having only been here for two weeks, am offended when people walk up to me and ask me for inane directions to something like the Haufbrauhaus in english. ahhh. oh well. i guess that you can't excape ignorace anywhere. case in point: (not to bore you all with my rediculous stories but...) last night i was walking home with a few of my newly aquainted friends and an italian punk tried to start a fight with me. i'm not a little guy and this guy most certainly was. not to mention that i grew up in a town that is know for having a lot of violence and when this is the case you grow up either being beaten or beating. never have i gone out and sought violence, but i won't be pummeled without a fight. so... to make a short story even longer... i, not wanting to go to german jail, told him where he could go (in italian, a benifit of living in italy for a couple of months) and walked away. when i got home i was infuriated that this kind of thing could go on. is this not supposed to be a celebration? whatever! well sorry for the long, long stories. i don't have any b&s info or comments but in the way of music... i finally found the nick drake boxset on vinyl and am a happy man. it was my birthday present to myself. nick g. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Hewwo, Well, yesterday was my birthday. And on friday my best friend brought into school for me...a three foot tall walking doll, called Mildred, which I carted about for the whole school day, to much jeering from the hard kids (but I didn't care, 'cause it was my almost birthday) . And some play-doh, and a Barbie flask. Which is always nice. And my other friend gave me a wand, and some pringles. So at least now I have the full fairy outfit. Wings, wand, magic hat called Sophie, and stripey knee-high socks. And too much glitter. Oh, and Ian sent me a Study at Stow tee-shirt, and the new hefner single (signed), which are now my two most prized possesions. And two other friends offered me sex, which I declined. Oh, and the surprise party that I knew about never happened. I suppose that must've been the surprise. My best friend couldn't be bothered organising it, so I spent my birthday with my mum instead and had the BEST BIRTHDAY EVER. So I'm 15 now. I'm no longer sinister's little 14 year old. Hey. I have ICQ now by the way. My ICQ number is 91134319, if anyone wants to message me with abuse. Heee. Babysitting is grate fun. D'you remember the advert "the car in front is a toyota"? That really used to get up my nose, when I was little. I would sit and think for ages about how that would mean that every single car would have to be a toyota, except the one at the very end. And would the one at the very end be a kind of king car. And what kind would it be? Would it feel lonely because all the other cars were toyotas, and it wasn't, or would it just go "aaah, you toyotas are all like sheep, but I am so much better, because I'm not just another toyota"? Would all the Toyotas pick on it, or would they fear and worship it? And if every single car except the one at the end was a toyota, then wouldn't it be so much easier and say "your car is a toyota"? Or were they tryong to be all PC and not offend the car at the very end? Then I thought, well, maybe it just means that the car in front is a toyota, like toyotas are the furthest ahead in technology and car-ness, and maybe I was just really stupid when I was little, or just thought too much. I was going to put in some B&S content, but I couldn't think of any. Oh, yeah, here's one. Both my cousin and my mum studied at stow. So yay for them. I think I'm going blind. Or at least my once perfect eyesight is deteriorating somewhat. And it's all your fault! Yes, you! Cause I hardly used computers much at all until I joined Sinister (which may be why I got such crappy marks at university, but that's another story etc.) but this past year or so I've spent more and more time staring at shiny screens and I don't think it's doing my eyes much good at all. Or it could be all that wanking... But lately I've been having too many of those incidents when you're walking towards someone in the street, who looks a bit like someone you know, but you're quite, although not entirely, sure it isn't them, but you have to keep looking at them just to make sure as it would be dead rude just to walk past if you did know them and by the time you've got close enough to be sure, the person, who it turns out isn't the person that you thought it might be, has noticed you staring at them and thinks that you're a mad person so starts chasing you down the street with a stick. (That was a terrifically long sentence wasn't it? If my old English teacher could read that she'd tear me arms off.) I'd imagine that a few of you are as bored as wombats with the Olympics already, but I'm going to write about them anyway. Always leave them wanting less, as would appear to be Tom Jones' motto. Wouldn't it be fun to have a motto? Carsmile spluttered: "Opening ceremonies are GRATE" I especially like some of the mad things that the commentators, more used to talking about groin strains and shin-pads, have to describe, such as how the giant blue man on stilts represents the great god Pan vanquishing the forces of evil, played by an army of Albanian dwarves. Painted orange. My all-time fave opening ceremony was the 1994 football (or soccer, for our overseas chums) World Cup in America, when Diana Ross missed an open goal from three yards out. Apparently Hibs tried to sign her in a swop deal for Joe Tortolano, but Motown were having none of it. (About 5% of you *might* get that reference. Sorry.) The rest of the Olympics is never quite as exciting, although I feel compelled to keep watching anyway, just in case the BBC plays 'The Stars of Track and Field' at any time. My bets are on a slow-motion montage after the closing ceremony. Chorus only, mind. They're bound to use it sometime. If they don't I'll damned well eat me pants. Or send them to David Coleman at least. Not for the first time, either. But he never sends me his in return, no matter how many kisses I put on my letters. Britain will be rubbish as always, one would imagine. I think they should introduce more sports traditional to these isles, to give us a better chance. Like custard pie eating, or knobbly knees contests. Or jousting, even. It might have died a death in the middle ages, but I'm sure it'd still be popular, if the lances were sharp enough. Chris Lampinen has been regaling us with tales of just how demmed sexy he is. I thought about it doing something similar, but then some of you have met me. Hi sinister lot, I kept wondering why it is so hard to start a sinister post... I wanted to start this post writting about this girl on telly faking an epileptic crisis... I wonder what Ian C. would have to say about that... mmmmm Instead, I'm going to tell you the story of another girl who found herself in London and spent there 17 days... 17 days of - as Paula would me to say- BooZe ExpLoSioN!! Oh dear! I wrote a whole post and then deleted it as I found it really silly... not that this one seems to be any better... Ok... I met everyone at the George my first night there... Big Gays Mark and Martin, Mr Trousers, Joe PF, Pam and steady Mike, lovely Lixi, Richard mmm... my darling Carey who stayed with me for 2 weekends and she helped me to deal with the tubes and everything... and the 2 american girls, Miss Courtney and her friend Sarah... sorry if I forgot anyone... but I won't bore you with the whole journal of my visit there... I'll just give you the HiGhLiGhtS TrOuSerS' GaRdeN PaRtY... I think that was one of my best nights there... some of us were in the blanket kingdom in Mr T's balcony whilst Joe's guitar gently weeped... and we all sang and told stories... I was really envious of Mr Popkins' record collection!! And I have to say that trousers is an excellent cook and his potato salad is highly reccomended... SiNiStER PiC-NiC... yes we had red knickers on, not bright red as we couldn't find any... and it poured down and we were walking barefeet with Lixi cause we wanted to show off our cherry red toe nails... Big Gay Mark managed to cripple Richard on footy... he just sprained his unkle tho'... I don't want you to think that Mark is a violent person... no no... he's such a sweetheart!! He can't harm anyone, not intentionally that is... Vicky what do you think? FrEuD'S... a coctail bar... we met there and got pissed once more... I met Erica at last... I have to say that she's really a doll, very sweet and an amazingly stylish girl... Paul made some pics of us... we looked glamorous but the pics were really really dark... and then we went to this chip shop and it was great... but I still can't eat fish! PiZzA ExPrEsS... sorry again I was late... as everyone can certify I'm nothing like my name "velocity girl" when it comes to punctuality... WhItE SoCkS and BlAcK ShOeS... yes!! Trousers is trying to revive the Johnny Marr style... don't give him style tips... he won't listen to you... do you remember the Pale Fountains? LuCy and HeR NaIlS... Lucy has great nails... I was so jealous... we went to this pub in islington called "the Famous Cock" (!) to meet Dudley and Joss... they were playing that night at upstairs at Garage... Dudley made Joss change his slayer t-shirt into a black shirt!! So, whilst we were waiting for the irish boys, Lucy put a nail varnish out of her handbag and started painting her nails... after the gig, we went back to the pub and had serious conversations about animal testicles and how they can be cooked! yes, I know!! GeOrgE HeNrY DiCkiE... yes, he's real!! We went to this pub and we exchanged lollipops and then had sword fights with them... I was really jealous of his barbie doll ring but he refused to give it to me... then we thought we should exchange watches but we didn't cause his was very boyish for me... and GH had the coolest Dr Who badge ever!! StArrY SaRaH'S BuBblE MaChInE... Sarah arrived at the George with Olivier and Kenjuggle with this bubble machine... I don't remember who was the bubble champion... I think it was Ken but I may be wrong... Starry also knackered poor BG Martin off in DDR.. but he was in great DDR form as he practiced loads in NY... LiXi'S InSuLt CaNdY... that was the night we met sir William Messent at the george again... some american tourists came there and were making photos as that pub is a historical one... Dickens was going there, I think... at the end they kept clapping their hands for their guide... so we were applauding too... then me and Lixi decided to buy some sweet stuff and came back with this candy with written insults on them... very educational, mind you... I learnt all these new english words... TrAcK & FiElD... it was kind of boring... I hope Strange Fruit will be better... actually I have no doubt about it... the best moment was at the end when they played "another girl another planet" by the Only Ones, one of my fave songs ever... and Lucy came there with a great black dress and tights looking absolutely fab... and Giles... Giles you bastard!! why didn't you call me on Saturday? MaDaM TuSsAuD'S MuSeuM... somewhere I wanted to go and I didn't! I wanted to go there and snog Jonny Rotten and Paul would make a pic of me snogging J.Rotten, but we were never able to wake up at a descent time... next time though definetely as I'm going back to London after x-mas probably if not sooner... You think I could stay away? No way... I was really depressed when I came back to Greece... All I could think of is going back... so I went to this record shop and bought a Beaumont LP and a New Distraction E.P. featuring Baxendale, Ricky Spontane, Teenbeat and Abbey Grange, to indulge myself a bit... Now I need to buy some clothes... that will definetely make me feel better... Another thing is that I missed AllY CiNnAmoN CooK!! As he went to London the day I was leaving!! Next time!! Oh dear, that was long!! And I haven't told you half of it!! I'm keeping the juicy details for myself!! I'm just messing of course... I have observed a long time ago how the flux of Sinister information languidishes,vanishes even during the long and now grey weekends. Those unfortunate souls as your humble servant for which week days and non-week days and even Bank Hols might be indistinguishable must account for an ethnic minority while those legions of pasty-faced mafiosi take over the pubs of the world...So here I am to alleviate the relax of your mailboxes. I have rediscovered lately'The stars of track and field' which self-quoting, it is a tune I never rated in IYAFS,stunned by (oh-so-typical) 'Get me away ...', 'Like Dylan in the Movies','If you are feeling sinister'.Not very keen in stirring up that old battle about 'epic' in music/...etc, but there is some of that about it.Perhaps it is Olympics in the air,after all. I managed to destroy my parents' sofa in the long and warm summer of 1984 impersonating Ekaterina Szabo at the bar exercises(how do you write that in proper English? Any gymnast out there?), so this sort of facts have a huge influence on my fickle personality. After a couple of years as an official expatriate, I have become used and bored of the questionnaires of the type : 'And what do you think of the British people in Spain?'.To summarise the stereotype,S&M + M&S, both with a relevant apparition in Murdoch's lyrics,curious.The mid-westernity that walks along with Lloyd Cole's persona and personae is absent from Belle and Sebastian's issues,true.Despite the fact that the geographical distance between Midlands towns and the big,shiny City is negligible in comparison to any American scale, the luggage the midlander carries with him/her to Art School in his/her way to the dazzling spheres of sophistication comes in the same card boxes...and same can be said of the Film/Media students I befriended as an undergrad in Madrid,originally from Castillan,Andalusian or Galician rural areas.It is funny how I also thought how 'American' their feelings towards their villages when I started to encounter for first time youngsters with great expectations who had not been born in the 'capital' as myself. Do you have to be real siblings to be in a duet? Yes(Webb), No (Montgolfier),you can pretend and add some token 'Brothers' to chosen family name.However,ignoring even the very basics about both of these highly praised combos and having the maybe wrong impression about this coming week performances,could any better informed soul to keep me posted privately about them? I'm really sorry but a) if you live in/near Toronto and b) you know and love the Winnipeg band The Weakerthans and c) you somehow don't know that they are playing a show in Toronto tomorrow night here's some news for you... The Weakerthans are playing "Ted's Wreaking Yard" on College tomorrow night (16 September -Saturday) 1) Ted's Wreaking Yard is cool 2) the Weakerthans are lovely - and anyone who loves B&S will appreciate the Weakerthans musical stylings (I think anyway) 3) that is all If you are there and see a guy totally loving the Weakerthans that's me. "men, dont do that stupid warbly whistling all round the shop.and if you do dont stand with your hand on your hip and do andrew loyd webber. its not ladylike." I've never noticed it in supermarkets but I have noticed that everytime theres been somebody in my house to do domestic repairs or deliveries (gas man, electricity man, delivery men or whatever) they always do that warbling whistle thing. It's never a tune I've ever heard but seems to be kind of organic in that it constantly changes and doesn't seem to be one tune in particular. I reckon it must be part of the training. The only other place I've ever heard them is on trains. Theres generally some old bastard sitting right behind me whistling away in that incredibly annoying, through the teeth style that makes the sound penetrate through even the loudest personal stereo headphones. Grrr. Speaking of trains, British Rail (or whatever they are called these days) really are hopeless aren't they. I say this as a regular train traveller, but today they surpassed themselves. In the one week when trains have become much more important since people can't use cars (petrol shortage in the UK for all those overseas listees), they decide to introduce a brand spanking new train at Glasgow Central station. Except that the damn thing got no further than 100 yards out of the platform before it derailed and thus caused pandemonium for all subsequent trains in and out of the station. D'oh!
