...I fly to you. Evenin all. Stayed up very late despite no sleep and a hellish day wasting my life on trains to watch The Delgados and Gorkys Zygotic Mynci get patronised by Channel 4. Delgados: short and sweet, not unlike a dwarf swimming in condensed milk. I love them. Their string section this summer were just too groovy, smoking fags in true rock stylee until the very moment of putting bow to string. Was a bit cheesed off with the briefness of their slot, to be honest, but who am I to influence the schedulers of our illustrious arty channel? The Gorkys had somewhat longer in which to strut their delightful Welsh stuff, including highlights of their exciting tour this summer which once again I failed to attend any of the concerts thereof. Bugger. At least Euros Cs had a haircut, thankfully noted by your correspondent. That boy needs to learn that there must be limits to elfin-ness, and the poodle rocking (do you see what Ive done there, children?) hairstyle was doing him few favours. Mmmmm, calculatedly messy hair. Gets me every time. Youll have to excuse me: Ive been on holiday and my eyebrows need plucking. Carsmile, that little old bloke on Magdalen Bridge is prone to uttering statements of incomprehensible philosophical wisdom, particularly while prone. Occasionally the police pluck him from his restful perch upside down in a hedge and set him on his way again, pausing in their diligent sweeping of scum from the neighbourhood only to scribble down these gems in their little black elasticated notebooks in case he turns out to be a prophet of the new world order. My rowing friends also make tramp noises while pursuing their unfathomable hobby (nay, lifestyle choice), but I dont think theyre making statements of cosmic grandeur. Theyre just grunting. I too love supermarkets, whoever that was. The shininess. The fluorescence. The smell-of-baking-bread air pump over the automated doorway. The overweening availability of product in every flavour you can imagine and pistachio too. It all gets a little overwhelming from time to time and I just drift among the alleyways of stuff, gobsmacked, while trying not to space out too much and make the security guards suspicious as I compare prices on Cabernet Sauvignons. Ah well, if this ole fuel crisis continues long enough, the once-pristine aisles will be carpeted with blood and spilt yoghurt from the fracas generated while frenzied mobs lunge after those last morsels of consumer goodness. Less than 24 hours back in the country and Im enjoying the media hyperventilation like nothing else. I go away for a week and the whole country goes wacky! And my phone got nicked. Bah humbug. Still, I did spend enough time in the sun while I was away to remove the transparency from my skin (although you can still see the pulse in my wrist. No kidding) for the first time in several years. Slightly less pasty-faced, still cardigan-wearing, but absolutely not vegan. Off to Baaaaath for a week to stay with Mummy Dahling. Near Wild Devon, as a great raconteur and wit of the list once said. A bit too near, if you ask me. Which you dont. Toodlepip. Hey sinister - It's been a while, but I was wondering if somebody living in the UK could give me an idea of some prices - some b&s content here. B&S CONTENT ----------- My friend is currently in Europe and she is going to buy me a uk release of "legal man" single and some new doc martens as my old ones have a hole in the sole due to my old flatmate wearing them to work (she still owes me lots of money - don't you hate that?) I'm in OZ so I'll have to almost triple our currency anyway, but if you could drop me a line it would be much appreciated. OLYMPIC CONTENT --------------- I would just like to add that we are SOOOOO bored with the olympics. Here in Adelaide we have a big clock (left over from new years) counting the days, hours mins and seconds til the opening ceremony. Lame? I think so.... However, I guess it is a bit exciting now it's so close, just so we can quit listening to all the transport and venue complaints and get on with it. There are also many nice looking sporting teams staying in adelaide at the moment, including the russian diving team, and the dutch football team, right across the road from my work in the hilton hotel. You would not believe how much security they have there! We have to get our bags scanned like at the airport, just to go into the bar for lunch. Roll on cute men..... In reply to ermmm....bah...sorry, forgotten who it was...silly me...but rating indie clubs in those groovy cities you mentioned, I would say as thus: London: Astoria, Tottenham Court Road: Pretty darn good for indie-stylee gigs. I saw Bis and Kenickie there in my day. Never heard any B&S though, but I was going through a stripey tights phase so I would have prolly gone to the bar when they played 'em anyway. Borderline, Charing X Road I think: Caters a bit more for the 20-somethings, heard B&S there once. I liked it. Birmingham: Snobs, erm..some road or another in the city centre, people will know it if you ask very nicely: S'okay..has its moments but the excess of swirly-twirly keyboardy 70's stuff can get annoying. Nice and dark though, so good for snogging indie-boys. I did ask for some B&S there the other week but the DJ poo-pooed me and played Beck instead. Edwards: Behind New St. Station. Never been there but I have heard good things about it. hi. I really am in no mood for writing. But tomorrow I leave for 3 weeks. Anyway....first things first...can anyone tell me of some nice indie rock clubs in London or Cornwall? Or even Birmingham? It would be so sweet of you if you could. Is anyone on this list French and going to see Elliott Smith in Montpellier? If you do and you see a girl with short black hair and quite pale skin and black rimmed glasses standing with a very pretty girl with long black hair and a very handsome young man....that's me and you should come say hi. Today I had to go get my drivers license renewed as I am turning 20 in about 2 weeks....and this 16 year old kid was there getting his for the first time....and he was adorable....very lovely and I so wanted to ask him if he like Belle and Sebastian or anything like that. But I chickened out badly. It's so refreshing to hear about or see 15 and 16 year old kids...breaking the mold of suburban clones. I am also enchanted with this boy who lives ofcourse in Seattle which is half way across the country from little old Omaha. OK...so I am leaving.....but I am so sad about the gas wars. What a sad way to start a trip. I will be keeping my eyes open for the Sinister people. Our indie rock show here played String Bean Jean which is my fav! Has anyone heard of Snailhouse? Buy it if you haven't. So, right then. *I'M GONNA BREAK THE RULES FOR SIX-POINT-THREE SECONDS* (avert your eyes! nothing to see here!) I simply had to write and say, "Vive la morte de la Beatles debate!" Yes, yes, say of me what you will, and hurl things at me when my back is turned, and put chewed-up gum on chair in hopes that I'll sit on it--just please, PLEASE, do not revive the minutiae-laden discussion of the band. I've spent the last week going all glassy-eyed and slack-jawed whenever the words J**n, P**l, or R***o appear in a message, and my down-arrow and Delete keys are getting overused. *BECOMING A LAW-ABIDING CITIZEN AGAIN* (there but for the grace of Honey go I) It's a ridiculously grey day here in San Francisco. Our "summer" (I use the term loosely) comes in September and October, and it's been rather crap thus far, so I've rebelled by spending some time tooling about in the collection of listees' photos. (That'll show the weather, now, won't it??) Who know that there were so many lovely boys in our midst? I surely didn't, but am most pleased to discover that this is indeed the case. And what with all the recent chatter about nakedness, you know,... Shall stop there before I teeter toward (or over) the edge of inappropriateness. The various Tales of Picnic(k)ing circulating around the list as of late have made me agree with Ms. Santa Cruz, Margo Schubert, that we Northern Californians should put down our Odwallas/Cosmopolitans/Your Drink of Choice Here-s for a moment or two and motivate to gather together in the name of all things, um, picnic-y. Won't you join the fun?? My friend Noel, whom I trust completely in matters such as these, claims that our pals Godspeed You Black Emperor are making their way to the City by the Bay on 10/30 and 10/31, which fills me with glee. Sinister: Ummm...the most stupid of posts...or how your email program can make a complete fool out of you.

Well.......ehhhhmmmmm........*cough* Hi again....I'm so sorry to bother you all with this but my email account seems to be going through some very serious self-inflicted psychological traumas.This morning I suddenly realised that all my inbox was deleted (maybe my brother being mad at me has something to do with that as well....)Still, the fact remains that I've lost everything in it, along with the posts of the people that had responded to my previous post's ("waiting for the leaves to fall") requests.Thankfully I had read them all last night but had left some of them unanswered, so that I would have something nice to do when I would wake up in the morning .Having to answer my mail in the morning while having breakfast at my desk is one of my favourite moments of the day. So, the ones that had written to me and still haven't received a reply, could you-PLEASE-email me again???I mean, -please-.... I know all this must sound really silly but I there's no other way I can contact you if you don't drop me a line again.... other things that happened today.... I saw my best friend, whom I hadn't seen for almost three months....Almost didn't recognise her, brought her "fyhcywlap" for her birthday ( it was on the 8th of August but never mind...) We turned the lights out and sat on the floor near the window, the only light in the room was the light from the lampost outside.We talked and talked for hours; remembered things that would have better been forgotten, some very unfortunate moments of the past, tried to bridge the gap.Things had been quite rocky this year for both of us and our relationship went through a lot.We had almost stopped speaking to each other.Still, she's my best of friends.She knows almost everything about me, she doesn't agree with some aspects of my personality, but I know she cares and worries although she doesn't show it.I can forgive her about almost everyhting I guess...I can't do otherwise.It hurts so much inside not being able to be with someone you care so much about, knowing that things have got between you.Please never let selfishness stand in your way.I've seen what it's like and believe me it's not worth the pain it causes to both sides.If you know that something is important for you just, don't let it slip away just because of some passing whim.... Say "I'm sorry" from your heart and things might get unexpectedly better..... (I'm trying to exorcise my own feelings, thoughts and deeds here I guess...I may not be making much sense, in this case I'm sorry, but anyone who might had been through a similar situation can perhaps see behind my words...) We went out afterwards..-or was it before??-...I can't remember.....ahh....it's no good....my mind's getting numb.......We would just go for a walk down the city centre or something......She wore her smart little dress with the mauve flowers pattern and heeled shoes and held her little black handbag....while I was wearing my flared jeans and worn out sneakers, my hair was a mess and my cheeks had little downward streams from the tears I'd cried....so there we are: it was -after-the talk we've had....I had my army rucksack with the big "belle and sebastian" on, and the little Snoopy pin.She's has long blond hair and reminds me of Sarah.She's sweet and doesn't feel awkward to dress well . I have short black hair and remind me of...myself .I'm bitter and can't dress well even when I have to.But when I sat on the pavement while we were waiting for the bus she came and sat next to me on the sad,cold cement.With her smart little dress with the mauve flowers pattern , her high-heeled shoes, her cool nail varnish and eyeshadow and all....She's my friend.I can't let her go....... Well it's a good job we don't need petrol to talk shite about the Beatles, that's all I can say. My favourite Beatle is the legendary fifth Beatle, Stuart Little. I don't think we should scoff at bakers. Lots of musicians give up their musical careers in favour of security, family, etc. It doesn't make them any less talented. I wish I had a pound for every time I've read "such and such is no longer involved in the music business" in soul and reggae sleevenotes. Some people even end up rummaging through dustbins for their dinner, and some people become mentally ill, without the dubious fanfare surrounding Brian Wilson's spectacular fall from grace. I have a confession to make. I have been unkind to Lloyd Cole. Bass players soak their hands in pish, eh? It takes all sorts. I still think Lloyd Cole is the Lenny Kravitz of jangle pop, and some of those early photos look decidedly new romantic, but I was wrong to imply he wasn't entertaining. He certainly entertained me. I think I probably turned against him because he wasn't 4 REAL enough, which is a bit silly. Also that turtle neck song was a bit duff. His website's quite witty though. I didn't make that stuff about Derbyshire and Sheffield up, presumably he was born in Debyshire and moved to Sheffield at an early age. I was just trying to make it all sound a bit more psychedelic. I could be getting him mixed up with Simon Groom. Do girls' mothers still drive 2CVs, or have they all been scrapped? That was a really cruel song to unleash on impressionable schoolboys. I hope you're all going to join Jordi's list. Not only do we get Jeepster news, we get DISTRIBUTOR news! And David Moore! Am I the only person waiting for a Northern Soul video update? I got that from Too Darn Soulful: The Story of Northern Soul (book by David Nowell), which is an interesting read. No wonder Beans laughed.
