Sinister: Sergeant Twee Is Going to Help Me

Hello Sinisterines, Today I returned from New York. I was supposed to return from it yesterday but I missed a plane. Very stressful experience, that. So I caught a very early flight and slept through the Trembling Blue Stars Peel Session and a Very Important Phone Call. The phone call I can call back about, even though it was from people who are thinking of paying me money to do things on a regular basis, but the TBS Peel Session is truly a loss. Maybe someone recorded it... Mr. Pinefox has asked some questions of me. I will answer them in the form of a story. Here goes... THE CAST RHODA: A craftswoman who makes the most fantastic oaken desks, she spends her days at work and her nights clubbing. Her darkest secret: she is really only six years old, despite what her ID says. Her favorite drink: vodka with an orange juice chaser. She's not as young as she looks, but whoever is in this day and age, in this day and age? Or at least that's what she tells admirers, or people who listen to her song. NAPSTER: A sagely Durian, he is a postman whose personality is as prickly as the spines on his gourdlike body. He spends his spare time surprising people by dropping from trees. His favorite drink: 7 and 7. Also, he tastes like an onion, only worse. So I am told, anyway. MP3: The world's dullest robot, MP3 (or empee three as he is referred to more commonly) is an engineer who makes bridges. In his spare time he sighs a lot and bores people to death by talking about bridgebuilding minutiae. He's also very fond of the Dave Brubeck Trio. He also has a short barrel-looking sidekick who speaks in clicks and whirs, and whose name is DBT, or Deebee Tee. His favorite drink: oil can. There are some more supporting castmembers, but this has already gone too far. For the record I didn't eat any durian at the New York Pick Nick, but I was very curious as to their proper spelling, and now I know. Nevertheless, it was a lot of fun. I still need to get the pictures out of my camera, actually. A random pink-haired girl knocked on Megan and Julie's door while we were in their dormitory room, and she was on a quest for pulp products (not to be confused with Pulp products). She saw my B&S shirt and asked when they were going to tour again. So if any members of B&S are listening, your casual non-Sinister-cardholding members are starting to get restless. Best do a tour of duty to keep the troops' morale up, like Yamamoto would have done. She also had heard about the picnics we have. Are these picnics universally known to people who like B&S but aren't on the list? Years later, if I tell B&S-liking strangers I went to one of these picnics, will they say "Oh, you went to one of THOSE?" Only time will tell. Actually, if one of you knows the answer you can tell me as well. Or compose the answer in the form of a novella, featuring Rhoda, Napster and Empee Three. x! Someone mentioned fashion. Well, I can't resist. Today I decided to make myself look nice for class. I'd love to go into detail as to what I was wearing, but I know some of you (yes, you know who you are..) would get all hot and bothered and end up having to take a shower, and being the nice fellow I am, I'll hold back for the sake of you poor souls. This will be sufficient: I was by far the best dressed and most attractive person on campus today. How do I know this, you ask? Research. I knew I was looking really fucking sexy when I woke up this morning so I went to school a couple hours early and scoped everyone else out. I spent an hour or two walking this way and that, looking at random people and thinking "Hm, if I am a ten, which I am, he/she is...around -123981283." As I've already told some of you, I had to smoke a lot and eat junk food in order to keep myself from reaching perfection and negating existance. Yes, you're welcome-- I love you too. Everyone was eyeing me. The girl's were swooning, the gayist's eyes were full of lust, and the straight boys were trying to pretend they weren't staring in envy (which they certainly were). I was looking at my reflection on the door and saw no fewer than many sets of eyes locked on my sexy self. I put a little hip-swiveling into my step just to rub it in. As we all know by now, I have great hips. Unfortunately, I am all look, no touch. Well, unless you're a certain listee with my crush vote *ahem*. Oh, yes, this *is* a B&S list. So, let us discuss those fine brits! I've devised a scale for rating sexiness. 0 is Carnie Wilson, 10 is me. This is how the band fared: Stuart M: 5 Rest of Band: 1 And some random people I fancy: Chan Marshall: 9 Me: 10 and then some Now. I'd love to stay and chat so more (because I love you all so very dearly) but I do believe I've had a rather long day. I'm exhausted. Besides, if I sleep November 8 will come faster. Dear List, I'm disappointed this Petrol-hugging campaign isn't going to turn into a full-on civil war - I was quite looking forward to stocking the attic with Spam and condensed milk, and joining a troop of dancing girls with sequinned bodices to keep the ranks happy. I suppose it wouldn't quite be Blitz 2000 if we were fighting amongst ourselves. Myself and friend Hannah Doll have decided we are Style Fascists.* We are right, and you are wrong, that's the spirit! We are the Plastic Mafia and we're coming atcha. When we get our act together, that is. There are so many things we said we'd do, last summer we were ready to take on the world, these days we just bemoan it. I'm Eighteen in less than a month and I haven' t achieved a single thing, and that's intensely depressing. As we walked over a Motorway bridge in Stevenage to the cinema last night, my boy comments that in the City he sees nothing but opportunity, but out in the Sticks, all he can see is a Full Stop - but he's so wrong, because we're going to get out of here, I'm going to get out of here, and I'm going to show everyone a thing or two, I just have to indulge the system for one more year. The Sugarbabes single is brilliant, buy it! It's a shame they're called the Sugarbabes, really, as I really like the cut of their jib. I empathise with Carey's wrath for the retail trade. Some of you might remember I'm employed in Mrs Moy's (or, as we like to call her, Meanie Moy) Sweet Shop, and have no end of fun overcharging customers and rubbing the names off the reserved magazines. Recently, a man strode into the Sweet Shop and asked for a Map of Bedfordshire and a pint of milk. I mean, really! I'm back by the way. Hello. Sinister: Gawking once again

Comrades, It's been some time since I've posted. I was rather upset that no one picked up on my whole Orwellian theory about our names slowly changing into our e-mail names. I looked once, twice... nope, no one seemed to care a jot that my name might become wmh74 or that you also might possess a particularly ungainly name. So I decided to just leer at you all. If you've felt a prickly sensation on the back of your neck lately, that's me. Glowering and wearing a black duster in the shadows. Oh, I know where you all live... and Llew, you really should do some more dusting in the corners of your bedroom. I almost contracted black lung disease hanging out there. Actually, I've just moved from Chicago to Seattle. The drive out was terrific and lonely. There's nothing like the empty sky of the Great Plains to make one feel small and terribly still inside. I suppose that's what drove the folks of Mitchell, South Dakota to build and maintain the Fabulous and Gawdy Corn Palace. They needed to make their insides giddy with something. I listened to belle and sebastian only a little bit on the trip I'm afraid to admit. That's the only real b&s content I can serve up here. He comes out and sits down and then the end credits run and then he head-locks Ringo. Well, it was funny. Far better than my description. I just thought I'd throw that in there b/c of the whole beatles debate. Whether he was the best drummer or not... whatever. well, first off, those clues about the tautology and the oxymoron narrowed it down and I found what may be the answers fairly quickly; for the tautology, "lewd and lascivious" from The Boy, and for the oxymoron, "They let Lisa go blind/The world was at her feet and she was looking down", which I see as an oxymoron because she obviously wasn't LOOKING anywhere. I could be right, wrong, silly, dreaming, etc. but I like those answers. anyway, there is a Modest Mouse concert in Toronto on monday, and provided I can come up with a plan which satisfies my mother (she is the one with a credit card) by tomorrow, I should be going. the trouble came when I told her I had a math test tuesday morning. humph. the bus and the train don't come back to stratford until the next morning, so I'll have to ask more people if they can drive tomorrow. everyone I asked up to now said they either couldn't drive, did drive but didn't have their license, or couldn't drive monday night. so I'll look harder! or no modest mouse, which would be bad, because not too long after I heard of them for the first time on this list I found out they would be in toronto on the 18th. aughh. I was going to say something else... I'm pretty sure it was not about Keith Secola, but I thought I would bring him up; he's a native american (although I always feel kinda weird using the proper politically correct term because native american persons so often use the term "indian" and canada still has a Ministry of Indian Affairs, don't they? no problem with convention, I don't actually think they are from india or anything...) ... anyway, he is a native american artist (in this case I mean musician) who sounds sorta kinda leonard cohenish, and I think everyone should at least hear "indian cars" because it is a cool song. that's not what I was going to say. Sinister: If You're Feeling Lazy Fold Your 3.6.9 Strap Tiger, You Walk Like a Legal Line-Painter on Wheels

Yeah, the New York picnic was blrrbrll! What fun it was, though, as is customary in posts of this nature, I have to include the obligatory "wish I had been more sociable" bit. But still, the folks I did meet were all shiny and sparkly and nice, and I am sure that all the others were the same--I should have gone around a bit more, rather than confining myself to the exotic Asian fruits section. I have to give a special thanks to the not-noticeably-inebriated Julie for posting such fine phallocentric directions, without which I'd've spent the day wandering the Great Lawn looking for cardie-wearers, not bloody likely with the hot weather we had. And to commend Oon for actually getting up from her deep sleep to come over and very outgoingly introduce herself to our little Asian fruit subgroup, as well as offering some well-heeded advice regarding mixing and lemon vodka and durian/lychees. And while on that topic again I need to apologize for the Durian Debacle. I had really heard great things about it. As it thawed the odor worsened, if that sounds possible to those who were brave enough to try it while still semi-frozen (the durian, not the people). But something exciting happened later: the special bamboo durian spatula I brought just for the occasion took on a smell less like bad onion/jockstrap/rotting flesh over the course of the evening, and presently came to smell like almonds, vanilla, and butterscotch. As well as a faint hint of durian, unfortunately. Still, sorry. I promise not to bring durian to any more picnics, ever. In fact, maybe we should issue a general B&S moratorium on durian. One other thing, NY picnickers: I was instructed by Miss L. Llew to act as her ambassador, proffering her regrets, etc, at not being able to attend (though it is my understanding that she ne regrette rien, really) and I entirely forgot to speak for her, so appalled was I by the ungodly durian stench. Another reason I have for posting now, non-picnic-related, is about the whole tautology thread of last month. I have finally gotten the answers to the riddles, aided at the eleventh hour ("but these go to eleven") by really very specific hints from the friend who originally posed the riddle (who, by the way, is not on the list, but saw in the archives that Nick Dastoor had said: >I'd say your friend isn't half as clever as you think and the oxymoron is probably 'Summer in winter, winter in springtime' after all.> She was not all that pleased at hearing how half-clever she apparently is--smart enough I guess to coax drosophilae to sprout wings while simultaneously chatting on Jeepy in the laboratory. For those who ever were and/or still are interested in the riddle, here are her clues: >looking for one oxymoron and a tautology in an ocean of lyrics isn't very easy. So... hints... the oxymoron is on an ep; and the tautology, on an lp. the tautology is in the title song of an lp, in fact...The oxymoron is in a song about a girl who probably appears in more B&S songs than any other. In one song, she has been abused, in another she is kissing men, and finally, she learned alot from putting on a blindfold. The song with the oxymoron is none of these, but it is all about this particular character> Good hints, eh? So soon I'll post her answers, though I imagine that with these clues anyone/everyone who might possibly still give a tinker's cuss about this will have sussed out the answers. Armed with these clues it took me about seven minutes, perfectly stationary, to succeed, as opposed to many hours, covering 436 miles, to fail entirely. By the way, another friend at the picnic, not too familiar with IYFS, thought the tautology might well be "me and the midget don't see eye to eye." I think that that one belongs firmly filed under "lemon-vodka-enhanced entertaining mishearings." Thanks again, NYC picnic organizers/attenders and durian tryers!
