it's been a while. i've been meaning to post off and on since mid-june, but always due to immediate embarassment as to what i was feeling or thinking, or the repulsiveness i found with my keyboard, i put it off. so here i am. and what do i say now? what really must i say? well i'll try my best. listen: i was standing in the queue (i have no other way to describe it) to enter my english class when a girl said 'hey, is that a belle and sebastian shirt?'. i of course had my stow shirt on. i was totally flabergasted. i didn't know anyone at wake forest had a soul. much to my chagrin i realized that they aren't all paper clowns. (settle down blake, lets not get bitter). but the girl went on to say that she thought the new one wasn't as good as TBWTAS. i really didn't have a rebuttal. i had no need to rebut. i was still very floored. listen: i saw the who three times this summer and i will see them twice more before the year is over and i recommend everyone to go see them. sure it's not the 70s but they still put on the best show around. i can only do so much, i realize. listen: there are two bands that i will now inquire if they're popular or not to you all? they are: phish and sunny day real estate. i suspect there may be more SDRE fans here than phish. phish were my favorite band when i was a freshman in high school so i went out and bought some of their albums again, after i sold them last year (business is not my strong suit, you see). they are at times very pretty, but i can't see why i liked them so so much. as for SDRE i've been told to go buy the one before the rising tide about a thousand times. but it wasn't there, so i bought the rising tide. i've actually seen these guys in concert and jeremy enigk's voice is just terrific. i just thought i'd let everyone know. listen: i'm sure many of us have had experience with this debacle. having a crush on a tease. a self annointed tease, no less. so what does one do? do the niceties and generally darling things this person does implant themselves in your skull as abnormal and specifically for you? or are they just very normal advances/niceties that you (I) should not take seriously. it's a tough line to walk on. too bad we can't all just smooch uninhibated. i am going to make soup. may your fall be warmer than usual. love the nerdy shy-eyed pacifist blake http://members.tripod.com/nucleartrout +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Sinister: Campbell III

CAMPBELL III: This time it's impersonal... I've learned a lot from the recent debate about I Campbell, though probably rather more about the Beatles than B and S! Anyway, a few random takes on the matter aimed at nobody in particular: 1.)One of the reasons that we have this confusion regarding the song-writing is that B and S are a bunch of old lefties, God bless 'em. Instinctively disliking the notion of individualism, they prefer to celebrate the tenets of co-operation and group solidarity in their song crediting policy. So they will never say outright that one person in the band is more equal than others. Fair play to them. I still think the normal practice in bands is for one person to be expressing his or her creative vision. The other palyers can add nuances vital to the final sound, but there is a single person who is the source of the inspiration and has formed the basis of the material. You can only exercise your imagination individually, not as a group. Maybe there should be some kind of equivalent in pop of the Official Secrets Act, and in 30 years B and S will be obliged to release the documents which reveal their song-writing technique (Doogan's diaries, or something). 2.) On this same note, I wonder whether people outside the group can also have a significant influence on a band's sound? I'm thinking of the producer. For instance, can it be a co-incidence that two of Felt's best songs (as Lawrence agrees on 'Ballad of the Band') were produced by the legendary John Leckie, who also sat behind the controls for John Lennon and the Stone Roses? This is yet another bloody complication. 3.) Isobel and Ringo analogy consolidated: Ringo didn't spoil the Beatles. Fortunately, his malaise was contained. But imagine if he had put his self-penned material on the band's albums. Imagine if in a bid to get his due share of the creative limelight he sang on, say, 'Norwegian Wood'. It doesn't bear thinking about. Arguably Ringo's best vocal input is to be found on his voice-over work for Thomas the Tank Engine. 4.) In terms of B and S I say this from personal experience. If I put on the first two albums wanting to listen to just one song, I can't, because one seems to lead naturally to the next, and I feel unsatisfied until I've heard every last track on the album. With the latter two albums where the song-writing input is diversified, I no longer get that old sense. In particular I find that the Spaceman dream song (which I find embarrasing to listen to) and Beyond the Sunrise stick out like sore thumbs. This is a shame because song for song I think B and S have gone from strength to strength up to the present day. The title track of TBWTAS, Slow Graffitti and The Model, for example, I think are among their best material ever. Anyway a band does not operate as a democracy and we are not voters so they will take their own unaccountable direction. I'm still grateful for the great music they produce (when so much around is mediocre) and stand in awe of their achievements so far (and part of this magic includes Isobel's duet appearances and her string arrangements, whatever form they may take). Hello, hello, I hope you are all in good moods in this fine, September Sunday. I'm taking a break from all the homework that I have for school tomorrow. This is coming into my 5th week back, and I hate it. This year's my make-or-break year to get my highers for uni, so I can be a legal man, and to prove that I'm no lie .It might not quite be make-or-break, but if I get my grades this year next year could actually be fun... I live in the highlands, and I was so chuffed when I saw Amy's post yesterday morning. That put me in the bestest mood for the whole of yesterday. I live in Dingwall Amy, do you know where that is? It's on the opposite coast, near Inverness. It's rubbish, coz no1's ever heard of belle&seb, they probably don't even know what indie-pop is. Too busy shagging sheep & chasing the haggis around the hills. Does any1 else live up here too? I'd love to meet other fans, have a pic-nic, etc. It would be brill if ne1 up here could play instruments up here too. It gets a bit lonely when your playing to yourself, trying to sing like Mr. Murdoch. Can't wait till uni when I can meet some of you. I should've started some of this homework yesterday. I would've too, if it wasn't for my band "commitments" My band might be getting their first gig soon. We're called the, "Prisoners of Society" and we are pretty dire. All we play is manics covers, because the rest of the band are too "hard" to play any b&s stuff. That's why i want out of it.I'm the lead guitarist, and I used to be the singer. Then the bassist, takes over the band, tries to tell us what we're going to play and so forth. Anyway, I can't leave coz they're all my friends and they need me. So I'm tolerating it 4now. Don't you just feel so grate after listening to B&S? I absolutely love them, and try to influence as much people as I can to listen to them. I still can't stop listening to "Is it wicked not to care?" after 1 1/2 years. Which leads me onto Isobelle. She must have a good influence on the band. I know I prefer Stuart fronting most of the songs, but where would B&S be without her? Where would Stu D get his inspiration for the story on the back sleeve of tigermilk from? I'm gonna hav to go now. This short break lasted 40mins. Sinister: warning - whinging within

Hello boys and girls, I haven't posted to the list for about four months, but I'm sat here with this application form that has to be in first thing tomorrow morning, and I keep putting off finishing it. You know how it is. I've had it for weeks now, and my intentions were good, but I think subconsciously I knew all along it'd be midnight tonight before I really got stuck into it. So what is more natural at a time like this than to write emails? I even got up early this morning to work on the application. But it's so lovely and sunny today, and the next thing I knew I was sat in a cafe drinking coffee, smoking marlboro lights and writing a really long letter to my friend Doug. Probably the longest letter I've ever written, and with a pen too, which is a bit of a novelty to me these days. Then I realised there were a few things I *urgently* needed to buy before I could possibly continue filling in the form (like nailvarnish), so I went shopping. It was really hot and sunny on the bus, and I was listening to IYFS for the first time in ages, and for a moment it felt like the beginning of the summer all over again. This was a really nice sensation at first, until it struck me that I had achieved nothing whatsoever over the summer. Despite all my plans, I'm right back where I started, and this is quite a sad thing to realise. I'm still in the same pittance-paying job, on the same old temporary contract. I'm single yet again, after ending a couple of new relationships when they were just a few weeks old (not at the same time, I hasten to add). Plans to move to Paris fell through, so I'm still staying with my mum (and it's not much fun, moving back in with a parent seven years after leaving home). I haven't updated my website for nearly a year, despite all the cool plans I've got for it. And one of my favourite kitten heels broke and was unmendable (yes, okay, that's not really an example of how things are still the same as they were last spring, but I'd got into the swing of complaining...). This application form is for the job I'm already doing. It would mean twice as much money, and a permanent contract. Getting it would also mean that one thing *had* changed since the start of the summer. All the more reason to go and get on with filling it in, I suppose. Wish me luck, kids. Dear Sinister People, It is Sunday morning and I've been reading posts. As usual, The Pinefox is eloquent, on the concurrence of speculations by Juliana Hatfield and Nietzsche on the subject of pop-band dynamics, amongst other things: I can't wait for the book (Cornell, forthcoming... in preparation?) I trust the New York Picnic was a glittering occassion and wish Miss Julie a happy birthday today. People are coming to Glasgow, or live there...wayhey! This startling fact has been shy to disturb my neurones (I've been doing the gamut of internet personality tests, all of which seem to point to a hyper-creative but hoplessley unobservant character). So, the autumn indoor picnic season fast approaching, it would be kind of nice for some of us Scottish people to meet up. Even if I'm too obnoxious for comfort I'm sure there are plenty of you out there who would, given the opportunity, enjoy one another's company, so send me an email if you're interested and we can arrange a time and a place. I am surrounded with cheapish musical equipment in the hope that, by dint of osmotic magick or somesuch, a tune of my own devising will come forth of the speakers. So far I have a few lyrics and one of those minor chord progressions I'm fond of, but no song as such. The brutal fact is that I lack talent and energy, and luxuriate in the obscure. I have, in the past, tried to insinuate my music on unsuspecting acquaintances to be greeted with comments like, erm, 'what the **** is that?' or, well: put it this way, I was into ambient dub in about 1985 so my efforts didn't go down particularly well with the Deacon Blue/Lloyd Cole fan club (to keep it real, man). Back on the subject of personality tests, us #sinister people have built up quite a database on TheSpark.com. According to this month's .net magazine, this type of test is based upon the Myers-Briggs model, which is a development or offshoot from the 'types' developed by Carl Jung. Jung himself, when coining such terms as 'introvert' and 'extrovert' was wary of such profiling becoming a parlour game, but it is a lot of fun nonetheless.
