this is something i've tried so long to suppress. my tongue is patterned with perforations, ive bitten it so often. but i. just. cant . help. myself. must. rant... i dont know what it says about me but i always get a bit obsessed with my jobs and my conversation, such as it is, becomes weighed down with dull retail references. this is taking it a bit further... in a few sparkling weeks i am leaving my job in tescos, the leading british supermarket, and running off a bit far away to do something else maybe. so before i go and wash away the pain of the last 11 months, i'd like to revel in the worst moments just a little and offer some advice about how you, the customer, can make your shopping experience less traumatic for the foxy shelf-stacker girls in aisle 7. just because im putting out the catfood doesnt mean i want to know about your kittie's favourite meat. just because i put out cous cous doesnt mean i know what it is. im dumb just because i work in a supermarket doesnt mean i'm brainless and futureless. dont ask stupid questions like "where's the milk?" (its in the fridge durr) because im not allowed to swear at you. which isnt fair children, dont run. its dangerous and you bring out my killer instincts. let me swat you! men, dont do that stupid warbly whistling all round the shop.and if you do dont stand with your hand on your hip and do andrew loyd webber. its not ladylike. ladies, dont use this time to chat to people you havent seen for a while. you're fulfilling our gossip stereotype and setting feminism back metres. or something. and dont park your trolley sideways if you must stop. or i'll barge you. dont be bastards, when im carrying 24 Kgs of kitty litter let me go first. im only small. when i drop jars of curry on the floor and they smash and make mess, dont stare and say things like "oo look she's made a mess". it makes me blush. and want to swear at you. every little helps i hate it when posts turn into stand-up routines. and im not speaking personally cos i dont post, you know? humour me. i cant do those muso conversations. and i just know i'll regret it in the morning. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sinister: Lloyd Cole & Belle and Sebastian

Hi, I haven't read the article on the Creative Noise site, but I don't intend for this to be a reply to it. Some have accused Lloyd Cole of name-dropping, but I think he has been misunderstood. I consider the allusions to literature and film in his songs as a part of the story, the characters, the atmosphere in which they live. Think of Charles Ryder before he met Sebastian. Think of the discussions in your western civ course freshman year. It's embarrassing but also refreshing to recall the earnestness of those years, when you thought you were free of the doggedness and tedium of high school, not yet aware of the careerism and feudalism within the university system, when you believed socio-economic status had no bearing on membership in an intellectual elite. If it's overly literary, it's because it's in the characters. And sometimes it's obvious enough to make you aware of the posturing, as in the end rhymes in "Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?". I think of Lloyd Cole as very American. There's the rootsy, blues element in his music, the tales of cosmopolitan sophisticates with roots in some midwestern town (I'm making this up, but it seems at least partially true of "Four Flights Up" and "Why I Love Country Music"), the out-of-place narrator in "Speedboat" (my feeling, based on stereotype, is that if he were British, then he wouldn't be there, or he would be openly antagonistic). So maybe that's another reason not to take Lloyd Cole's literariness at face value. Although he went to the University of Glasgow, Lloyd Cole is supposed to be from Derbyshire and Sheffield, according to Peter Miller. Someone in B&S mentioned that they held the press conference in London cos Glaswegians don't go for that sort of thing. Now I can hardly imagine Lloyd Cole coming from such an environment or recognize any sign of its influence on him. Not with all those pin ups. If there's anything for which he should be criticized, it's for being too eager to please, too available. I can see why a friend of mind doesn't like the way he sings in "Her Last Fling"; it's great to me, but for some, it might lack restraint. The exact opposite is true of B&S: the way Stuart sings, the way they dealt with the press, etc. I read that "Rattlesnakes" was influenced by Joan Didion, the song itself by _Play It As It Lays_. Somewhere on his web site (lloydcole.com) he writes that "Easy Pieces" was influenced by Raymond Carver. These writers and others cited in his lyrics are mostly American. Whereas B&S seem particularly British in outlook (why they could be loosely compared to the Smiths but LC couldn't; why LC couldn't completely carry off a song like "James"), that is, when they aren't netherworldly (there's something holy about Stuart). I don't think the mention of American writers in "Le Pastie de la Bourgeoisie" is meant to be sympathetic, as those of Sid James and Paula Wilcox are. There's a level at which the speaker identifies with the (anti-)heroine, but another at which he's mocking her for putting on bourgeois airs, alone in her bedroom with the sort of books young people read before going off to college. A common link might be the French New Wave, but I think of that more as Isobel's pet interest. Much as I would normally extol the virtues of riding on city buses for a hobby, it is probably best not to try at present. For those of you outside the UK, huge numbers of people have suddenly decided to do something very un-British in the form of *gasp* direct action, to protest against the high fuel taxes round these parts. This action includes blocking the passage of fuel from refineries and driving along motorways _very slowly_, or something. The number of e-mails back and forth amongst this merry band of publishing staff with 'Buses' in the subject line has been truly bewildering. My timing has been (uncharacteristically) superb, as I have just landed myself a temp job ten minutes' walk from my house. It's the first time I've been able to walk to work and it's a very pleasant one, as it takes me along the Thames towpath where it's all lush (in the non Miki Berenyi sense) and green. A certain sinisterine who shall remain nameless once exclaimed "I can't believe I'm in Oxford, it feels just like the country!" whilst walking very close to here. Too right. The walk is slightly longer if I'm unable to gaze in a pleading, doe-eyed manner at a permanent member of staff who happens to have a key to The Gate (more TIJAMRS references in a moment, real ones!) as I can then follow them through and avoid a 200 metre detour through an industrial estate. A well concealed one, tho, which doesn't spoil the rural idyll. I've been listening to my TIJAMRS CD a lot lately, after a long gap and I have to say that the three songs on it which don't sound like they belong on the Gentle Waves album are somehow different from all other B&S material. The songs didn't appeal to me immediately like those on the albums and other ep's but their appeal grew over quite a few listens. I haven't been sleeping too well lately and I've been trying to avoid the nagging thought which occcupies me during the day (namely, the utter impermenance of everything in my life, despite my best efforts to the contrary) by wondering what the running order will be for next year's shows. Just a quickie to say the Black Sessions CD is well and truly gone, so sorry folk, but "there cane be only one" I can't believe I said "And you are talking to a BIG Brian Wilson here", as opposed to what I meant to say, which was "And you are talking to a BIG Brian Wilson fan here". Which I believe must have been a wee bit of a Freudian slip. Dammit, I have been packing on the kilograms (Americans - kilograms are the metric unit of weight measurement, similar to your so-called "pounds". English people - "pounds" as in Imperial weight measurment, not as in unit of currency) I think there should be more fat pop stars. That was the reason I liked Ultrasound so much. And probably why "Everything Picture" bombed so badly. I'm sure very few people recognised the majesty that was Andrew "Tiny" Wood, weight in around 150 kilograms, respelndant in glitter eye makeup on "Later With Jools Holland" ..... Sup homies. Today I wore my B&S shirt. Again. Does that warrant a post? YES! And here's why- I also wore pants AND underwear. A daunting combo. Usually it's one or the other. I like to wear tight low-cut jeans and short t-shirts to show off my hips which are fucking fantastic if I do say so myself. I do say so myself, look: My hips are fucking fantastic. So, the Will Porter fan club. It appears there is some interest, and that the subject has come up before. You can guess the rest.. We had a bit of a falling out after. I don't think I'll be seeing him anytime soon. I'm a bit heartbroken, so, I guess that's why I'm really posting. I need sympathy. Don't mean to post twice in a day, but I just found out that a NEW Nation of Ulysees record is being released this Fall by Dischord Records! Its called "The Embassy Tapes" and its the last recording session they did before breaking up in the early 90s.
