The language of rapture, huh, I'll give you rapture, I'll give you nothing you wanted to know and everything you didn't, I'll tell you how things are really run, who's the Daddy? I'll give you love and death, war and peace, Morcombe and Wise. Laura was the same, before she left, before she stopped, she blew her brains out in a suicide machine. She now only lives in a faded newspaper cut out kept by her mother, next to her picture as a girl on sports day. But God dam it, she was a rebel. She did everything before everyone else, even death. Have you ever written an obituary for a friend? I shouldn't worry about writing the ultimate text. I shouldn't worry about being Joyce or Dostoyevski. I even shouldn't worry about name-dropping either. I think that a modern text needs name-dropping; there are no longer any good names in the world. There are no more Oppenheimers, no more Merry Pranksters; no one holidays in Monte Carlo any more. Erica would agree that there is no more class. She would say that there is no one to take up the baton and run, no one willing to hotwire the Bentley, tear up the lawn in their bold escape to the coast and fuck the consequences, no more brutal teenage suicides. There are no heroes anymore. I shouldn't worry about this coming anywhere near the ultimate text, I am fully aware that it can be nothing but an insignificant text, touched up by a drunken author over the years until he finds a wife or some other distraction, that he forgets about this text and fills his now adult life with taxes, mortgages and many other things which I cannot even think of right now. I must apologise. I am not writing this in the best of circumstances. It is two in the morning and I am, ever so slightly intoxicated by cheep wine and my fathers' even cheaper whisky. The truth is that if I was sober I could probably think of a third millstone, which shall deservedly occupy my marital neck in years to come. Perhaps I should stay drunk. At least if I'm drunk I don't think about marriage, about mortgages and jobs for life, except they're not for life: they are for as long as the company can stand you or you can stand the situation. If I was sober I could think; Drunkenness is bliss. Ignorance is truly bliss. If I was at work I wouldn't know what was going on, I would be kept constantly busy by my demanding and fearful (demanding of me and fearful me and all those in my department) boss, so busy I wouldn't have time to think. Perhaps that's for the best. Perhaps I should get a job. At least then I wouldn't mull over what I know, there's no way to go back and un-learn what I have come to understand in these last few weeks. I wish there was but there isn't, and that's the problem: it's all about reality, or rather the perception of reality, the same reality that interrupts my sleep, the same reality that interrupts my workless day to bang the truth home. Hello all, I saw the John Hughes discussion, and I couldn't help mention something that has always bugged me. Does anyone else feel Duckie gets a raw deal at the end of Pretty in Pink? Here he is, a nice guy in love with his best friend. She falls for some hunky rich guy whom she doesn't know, and poor Duckie is stuck with Annie Potts. Sure, he acts like a jerk, but only because the plot forces him to. In the end, he does the noble thing and lets her go. What is his reward? James Spader's skanky left-overs. Are we really to believe he just forgets about Molly for that blond 80's whore? I can't help but like the movie. With New Order, the Furs, OMD, and of course, the smiths on the soundtrack, who can complain? The best 80's teen movie is "Say Anything..." though. I can't even begin to describe it's greatness. All you lucky UK folks! I have to wait quite some time to hear Johnathan David and Carriage Clock. Does anyone know when they will be on John Peel? i must give a big 'fancy a brew', 'must get some oil for the door' or at least a 'biggedybiggedy boing' to the fabulous mark and lard who's evening show i first discovered when i should have been revising for my gcse's back in '95 (also when i discovered B&S but i think i heard 'the state...' being played by mary anne hobbs in my case) there are plenty of websites out there with literaly thousands of short clips of them to download on the net somewhere, go find them i loved cyril dorricot thanks to those of you who pointed out i was thinking of Todd Solondz when i mentioned Hal Hartley - esp. to jason for the list of films, i might do some research into both directors. these coincidences keep happening to me, i thought about 2 people the other day who i hadn't seen for a while and bumped into them both at separate occasions. i thought to myself "i havent heard from James in a while, i wonder if they've got a new single out soon" and later that night i heard james' new single on the radio. i also thought "ruvi hasn't posted for a while, i like his posts, they are informative and humerous" (maybe not in those words) and lo and behold the man writes and proves to us he is safe and not dead! i'm scared... really... it's freaking me out... so i'll go. what's the crack with the 15 minute rule?, should a post take you more or less than a quarter of an hour to compose? i'm con fussed. i might have a job DJing on a thursday night at my local before and between the bands, whoopee!! pez* ps. karren, you seem to get all my ps's these days. your new address is alot closer than canada so i'll send your tape there if you want, cheaper on the old stamps, see. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. it is indeed encouraging that an icon of popular culture such as silent bob should like another such icon, john hughes. in fact it's the best thing about silent bob, and there are many great things. i watched pretty in pink all on my own the other night and it was bliss. even though the rich kid/poor kid divisions have been superseded (in my experience anyway) by the far more elusive battleground of 'cool', it still rings true. and yes, i am aware that that statement says things about me that i would rather it didn't. also, madeleine said: "... this vision of loveliness that is Molly Ringwald. Sinister: The start of the journey.

And I suppose this is the best part. Safe, secure, uncommitted, I could change my mind, but I wont, something is about to change. It is the best kind of day for a new beginning. Not too perfect. Why would anyone ever change anything if everything was perfect? Today is a day is definitely a day for a new beginning It is bright but with what could be the slight chill of wind and a slight greyness. I notice the weather a lot it is something you can rely on to be changeable. Other things well other things you have to look harder for change but often if you do you will find it. Yesterday for instance standing at a bus stop looking at the same old buildings. The shapes, the same colours, the same things I see everyday of my life just about. Not exactly the ideal place to look for change you might think? Well you would be wrong. I was staring at the wall of a block of flats I must have seen a million times before. Normally, though, I would see it as just that, a wall, but for some reason yesterday I saw the bricks. It was brilliant; they werent even shapes at all but sort of rounded and comforting. The colours varied so much from one to another I wondered how I could have gone all of this time just seeing the wall. All the same just like that my life changed I would never be able to stand at that bus stop and see the whole wall without the bricks. That all seems a long time ago now. And Im getting off the point here, sorry. I just got a bit carried away there. I have yet to tell you that the most important change that happened to me recently. It happened a few hours ago when I woke up. This morning the world disappeared leaving me wondering why. The quiet that surrounded me cushioned the blow because the idea that there was nothing left to fear would have scared me quite a bit. I've been lying here for an hour or so now and theres nowhere left to go. But its alright I have everything left to see. The emptiness that was normally inside of me was gone but somehow it now surrounded me... And instead of being on the outside looking in I was on the inside looking out. And surely thats not a normal thing to happen? But I have nobody to ask about this so maybe its just my perception of the situation. Everybody else seems to have disappeared along with the world. Maybe you will understand why this day is not completely perfect now and maybe you will understand why today is a good day for the start of this journey Now you will forgive me for making an assumption here. I may of course be completely wrong but I shouldnt think too many people have woken up to find this has happened to them. This being the case I should try to tell you what it feels like. Have you ever been in a room with a group of friends all talking and laughing but you felt completely alone? That is what happens to me. Not that it is a bad thing to happen. Its just that I often find myself in a little world of my own about a million miles away from other people. Sometimes I can be listening to a conversation smiling and nodding and maybe even laughing but Im not quite there Im somewhere else. And then I start thinking well if Im not here and other people arent aware of that then maybe they arent here either. And then when I start to think along those lines I cant help wonder how many million miles apart we all are.. It makes me feel very small and very alone. That feeling of being alone is just a fraction of what I felt this morning. It is nothing compared to waking up and realising that the world had got bored of my half-hearted participation. and decided to leave me. And seeing as I am alone I should finish these words now Let them float off and create a little bit of life for themselves. hi sinister folk, It usually takes quite a lot to make me post (twice in 3 years so far), but i just wanted to ask one or two things.... everyones been chatting about the glasgow shows, and about how much fun you are all going to have at a picnic beforehand. is anyone on sinister going to the aberdeen show? i haven't heard it mentioned so far. I'm coming over from belfast to stay with friends (actually, the only person i've truly converted to b&s. who in turn converted his sister. but yeah, i'm going with them.) are there plans for anything fun before/after the show? picnic if the weather is nice? hmmm. And I can't work hotmail either, apparently. Two posts in one day? Sound like something my Dad would refer to about finding employment in the 70s. Anyway, I have good reason becuase I, like many others, am sure that I was ONLY person in the whole of the world to listen to Mark and Lard religiously between 10pm and midnight back in the day. "Of course, they only broadcast to MY wireless", I would whinge, in my corduroy-charged, noodle-fuelled studenty way. It's true (says Big stu) that they are solely responsible for B&S's first mass broadcast, and I also agree (like Dan) that they're being done a horrendous injustice by being allocated the afternoon slot. But it's the mention of guest reporters and general japes that made me post. Dan mentioned Douglas (of BMX Bandits - correct - does anyone remember the song 'Serious Drugs'? It was beautful.. woops, tangent). Hi again. I was about to comment at how mauch I enjoyed Katie Puckrick (sp?) on that show - she really added US Supermarket chic to the whole experience. I've got a CD of all the old characters too - does anyone remember the 3-second memory span goldfish, Rabbi Lionel Blair, Cyril Dorricot and his pathe news? It's pant-wettingly funny stuff. No more content aside from the mention of post-Albert Hall disco-dancing. I'm sure this is being taken care of by the more socially-aware members of the list. If so, can you let us all know? Ta. May I (in my first ever post) concur with Mr Gardiner on the points he makes about Mark & Lard. It was back in nineteen-dickety two (or when I was at college) when I would go to bed early to listen to their Mon-Thur show from start to finish. Amongst cultural attaché reports (eg. Douglas from BMX bandits(I think)), popstar novel readings and a bunch of other funny-talk stuff that I first heard 'The State ...' and was truly wowed. Their afternoon slot (we have it on at work) means they have to play a load of A & B list stuff, but hey, they played French Disco <stops coding and starts nodding head incessantly> earlier in the week & Debaser yesterday. They OK. So, Albert Hall yes!yes!yes! There are 7 of us coming down from Leeds. I hope there'll be a proper indie club afterwards ...? Ta ta, Dan. Their taste in music generally makes John Peel sound distinctly second rate. However, against my better instincts, I found myself listening to Peel's show last night, to be presented with "something new by Belle and Sebastian"; and it turned out to be Carriage Clock. And it sounded rather wonderful actually. It's barely recognisable from the instrumental version they played at their gig a bit back; and is in no way harmed by its complete lack of a chorus. And having heard the second half of Jonathan David (I switched on the radio halfway through...), I am now of the opinion that every single song on the new EP is better than anything at all on the Fold Your Hands album. Or the Legal Man EP. A real return to form, and very welcome it is too. Sorry if anyone else has mentioned this already, but John Peel went on to say that B&S had already recorded a session, to be broadcast sometime in the first 2 weeks of June, consisting of 4 brand new songs, none of which appear on either of the 2 new EPs. So that'll be the sound of several hundred listees going shopping for blank tapes then... And before any non-UK listees complain that they just don't care, I'd remind you that you'll be able to listen to it over the internet; it'll be on in late afternoon in the States, so there's no excuses. I've just had a very frightening thought; this is my second post this week which actually contains some content. This is of course totally against my character, and will be rectified shortly. There's an election coming up in the UK. The main difference between our elections and those in the United States is that we know how to count.
