newsflash: b&s session to be aired on john peel on MY BIRTHDAY! (that's tuesday 19th june, by the way.) i'm going to put some nightlights in my garden and point the radio out of the window while i lie on the grass, drink some wine (actually i might have to sit up to do that bit) and look at the stars. you should all do the same. i'll only be 23, so hopefully no stroke for another year yet... i think it's quite funny that the abbreviation for the albert hall is RAH. as in 'RAH! i'm going to see b&s'. time to launch a pointless linguistic competition, i've decided. me and dj matt were told on saturday that there was only one word in the english language which contained the letters 'd' and 'k' next to each other (in that order). always up for a challenge, we proved how much sadder we are than the people who devise these teasers in the first place by finding five by the end of the night. (it might be a lot easier with the letters written down, come to think of it.) but anyway, a lovely mix tape goes to the first person to tell me all five... as ken pikachu is now our daytime tv correspondent, i wonder if he could report on 'fetch the vet', a new animated phenomenon i've seen advertised on bus stops a lot. it sounds potentially morbid for a kid's show - every episode involving some casualty/er style animal emergency? episode 1: dog on wheels -oh no, fido is turning a corner rather fast while arguing with his owner -look, a terrible crash has occurred <brief cut to private life of claymation vet> -fido's bp is 60 over 40, he's bleeding out, etc -fetch the vet! talking of animals, i can't help thinking that larry the frog might be happier if he didn't have a big stick up his arse. right, i'm off to plan how to get in front of big stu at all costs on june 29th. Hello friends, Allow me to start this with the token phrase, "Oh, all you lucky people who get to see Belle & Sebastian live, I'm so jealous, etc." But you are lucky, and I am jealous. I drafted a letter to Isobel to see if she wanted to go to prom, but I never sent it. That's the extent of my B&S content, for this time, at least. There are a few things that prompted me to post, I believe that two of those things came from the illustrious Pinefox! (note the exclamation point denoting increased illustrious-ness). 1. Points of/raised by Pinefox a. Squeeze. I remember as a lad listening to Singles; 45's and Under. (Somebody help me out with that, am I even close to the title?) My father had it on vinyl and I would jump around and play with my cat during the particularly happy numbers and more than likely do considerable damage to the record. But right, they're great. b. Edward Gorey Fascinating, his works and his life. I recently read a biography on him entitled 'The Strange Case of Edward Gorey,' written by a friend of his. Has anyone got a favorite Gorey tale? I'm rather fond of the Pious Infant, personally. The preceding subpoints may not have even been raised by Pinefox, but oddly enough his posts stick out in my mind. 2. Hye Min a. Weezer The new Weezer album is incredible (though they don't seem to be too terribly popular on the list). Maybe in five more years we'll have another 28 minutes of greatness. Although word on the street is that their newer stuff is dark, like Pinkerton. Which is good, cause Pinkerton's still my favorite. Has anyone ever listened to a group called The Locust? I'm starting to grow attached to their self-titled disc. I think my favorite song off of that album is probably a toss-up between 'Moth Eaten Deer Head' and 'Cattle Mutilation.' They don't really sound anything like Belle & Sebastian at all. So, with that I suppose I'll retreat back for awhile. Hope everyone's doing well. Has anyone seen Coldplay live or is going to see them on June 2nd at the Electric Factory? My friend got me tickets so I'm rather curious. Sincerely, Timothy. xoxo p.s. Actually Del Boy would probably say "Au Reviour" Anyway, inkeeping with this glorious sunny day i have be introduced to the oldie worldie sweet shop that is Sinister. Therefore it is only polite that i greet everyone. I'm JoJo, a Mr Benn enthusiast and general fancy dress hire shop loiterer type person. I've never actually met Mr Benn, but i will,though he is as elusive as Father Christmas, sans beard. Belle and Sebastian have made me a happier human. In a sense this is correct, for it does show that utilitarianism doesn't provide a practical guide for day-to-day choices about what to do, but it's a rather unfair critique of utilitarian positions in meta-ethics. The meta-ethical utilitarian is going to say that the practical difficulty of *actually* assigning value isn't the issue; the issue is simply that 'utility' (some abstract measure of human happiness or quality of life) is the only notion that can ground a system of ethics. Utilitarianism is very compelling from a meta-ethical perspective (we're doing meta-ethics when we wonder whether there really is such a thing as 'right' or 'wrong', 'good' or 'bad', and, if so, what it is that makes something right and another thing wrong) because it is very difficult to argue that other ways of providing a foundation for an ethical system actually do so. Moral anti-realists seem to have the upper hand against Kantian practical reason based approaches, for instance, for these rely on contentious claims about human nature, and full-out realist positions fall prey to Mackie's argument from queerness (If 'morals' or 'values' are real, what kind of a thing are they?...They must be a very queer sort of thing, indeed.) So, it can seem that we are forced into a utilitarian position (e.g. an action is good if it contributes to utility, and better if it contributes more) or into an anti-realist position (e.g. let's face it, "right" and "wrong" are imaginary human constructs...if we think about it, we realize there really are no such things). But, utilitarianism is cumbersome as a decision-making tool, because of the very problem Matt mentions: assigning value to states of human happiness seems totally arbitrary. Is a burst of intense joy better than a lifetime of mediocre satisfaction? Furthermore, should we not include animals? Is a human death a good thing if 50 million rabbits are thereby given a simultaneous orgasm? Again, the meta-ethicist will simply shrug her shoulders and say, "I don't know and it doesn't matter...the point is that in general and in abstraction, the moral worth of an action depends on its utility." There are more serious problems with utilitariansim, however. For example, we can contrive of thought experiments in which really "bad" things (that is, things we are very tempted pre-reflectively to call evil or bad or morally vicious) result in unexpected utility. Suppose that we had an omniscient computer, and this computer enabled us to chart out a finite history of the world from any point in time onward, and to determine how the course of history depends upon the occurrence of any past event. I could ask it, "What would my life be like in 2030 if I hadn't brushed my teeth yesterday, and what will it be like given that I did?" I could then compare the two, and see what contribution to my future well-being my tooth-brushing made. Of course, we'd expect the contribution to be quite small, and it would in that case be difficult to determine whether or not the action contibuted to my happiness or well-being. Now, suppose we ask the computer, "What will the world be like in 2030, and what would it have been like had the Nazis never ravaged Europe?" Imagine the computer tells us that the world in 2030 will be utopic, with peace and prosperity enjoyed by all people, but that -unexpectedly and due to some unfathomably complicated chain of circumstances- had the Nazi's never existed, the world would be in a state of utter decay and devastation. What would the utilitarian say to that? Whether we can realistically assign value to happiness or not, it seems totally obvious that the world in 2030 post-Nazi's would be much, much better than it would be had they never existed (it doesn't take any precise or controversial assignment of 'value' or 'utility' to license the claim that peace and prosperity for all is much better than a hellish nightmare on earth). This happiness (or misery) will be enjoyed (or suffered) in 2030 by, say, 10 *billion* people, and the price we'd have paid (or trade-off we'd have made) in the 1940's was a (by comparison) minimal (say) 10 *million*. It seems that the utilitarian is forced to admit that the Nazi's did a good thing - after all, the whole world will (ex hypothesi) profit enormously from their actions. But that seems a crazy thing to say, for we are inclined to hold onto the belief that the Nazis' actions were incontrovertibly evil - and therefore it seems that a notion of moral value founded on human utility isn't a notion of moral value the majority of us recognize as such. Philosophers tend to get themselves into this kind of situation all the time: their arguments seem to push them into a position on the issue of "X", which position prompts the rest of us (even those of us who are philosophers) to say, "Well, if *that's* what you mean by "X", then clearly we just mean different things." In my mind, this latter problem is the sort on which Utilitarianism beaches itself - the problem of precisely assessing utility, however, isn't really so serious. Sinister: tetotalitarian

Good morning all! It sure is a lovely morning, and I'm dead tired. I noticed somebody mentioned Utilitarianism. I believe Ian was correct in his definition. I took an Ethics class last semester, and we learned that Utilitarianism is assigning values to certain situations and deciding what was morally right based on what came out with a higher number of points. I think the idea of assigning a value to joy or sadness is preposterous. Who is to decide what is more joyous to another person than it is for another? Does that make sense? I loved Kate's thoughts on nostalgia. I get more nostalgic every year. I remember hating my 11th grade year of high school, but now I can only think fondly of it and I actually miss it. I saw the "1979" video last night and almost cried remembering how awesome 8th grade was. I know it's old news, but I saw Miss Gracie from Ferris Bueller in the movie Airborne last night. Don't ask me why I was watching it, but I just couldn't turn off "the world's only rock n' rollerbladin movie!" I can't find Johnathan David online anywhere. I did find a live version of "Carriage Clock" though. I also checked out Hefner, and found them to be pretty rockin'. I received a traffic ticket last night for cutting off a cop whilst running a red light. Let it be known that I'm a complete idiot. I'm done wasting time now. hello hello... i haven't posted in a while, so i thought i should. i am rather unhappy but content and all these other unnameable things at the moment. i don't know why. (mucky water, mucky water...) my roommate just walked into the room and complained about her latin test. apparently, she got her period in the middle of it... i have been playing some bruce springsteen and roy orbison to help her feel better. i am slightly disturbed. the belle and sebastian boy (the only one in exeter, new hampshire) not only not likes me as a girlfriend type person, but strongly dislikes me as a person. he does not acknowledge my exitence, and while everyone else says he's one of the nicest, kindest people they've known, he treats me in quite a hostile manner. i am disappointed, not only having lost a chance at dating someone who likes belle and sebastian (i would date my friend rachel, but i'm heterosexual), but having lost the chance at having another friend who knows of belle and sebastian as well... has anyone heard the new weezer album? is it any good? yes, bagel chips are good!
