Sorry if this is cheekiness and list abuse, but myself and some fellow sinisterians and various hangers-on need some advice and guidance. We're going to the Alexandra Theatre gig in Birmingham, but we can't get home afterwards. So if anyone has any ideas of good clubs that we can kick about in until the early train back to Leicester, or cheap Bed and Breakfasts we can go to, please mail me off list and the Leicester Sinister Chapter will be very greatful. okay! apologies to anyone that's not interested, but... the delaware picnic will take place saturday, june 2, at rockford park, wilmington. we'll meet at trolley square at 2pm and then walk over to the park. trolley square is a two-story shopping place on delaware avenue between n. clayton and n. dupont streets. we'll meet on the n. dupont side, in front of happy harry's drugstore, since it's hard to miss; it's got a big sign out front, and trolley square has a nice big sign that says "trolley square" with a picture of a (you guessed it) trolley. if anyone needs more detailed directions, please email me. hope to see lots of you there for picnic fun! -eric ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? it was a quiet afternoon and things weren't going so well: all these crossing lines communicating somewhere as if the signal box of that highly important mainline was shifting louchely of it's own casual accord and those big steel trains hurtling nowhere and maybe about to crash. however one always feels the need for solution a formulation a triangele in the saline ocean-reflected sky: I shalln't say too much but I'm already buried, and, btw: the flowers; little tiny fresias, are in a cool breeze rather sweetly and their scent, too, goes nowhere. Stop. metaphors of screeching rusty brakes of a night-express or word-play on stop/sop/glob/global morning and where? again; where? one cannot love everyone: not in the true sense of always being there. Only this myth we thought might be a nice idea might achieve that but that was then: at its apotheosis of corruption about one thousand years ago: analysed 500 years go once the crusaders stopped killing moors and stuffed with miracles farther back. Or so it is written and, on the net: we write. Why? In order to connect, but connection isn't enough. As James Bond said, as said by the actor Pierce Brosnan: the world is not enough. So, what is enough? REALITY yeah; that mundane thingy someone's face: maybe I get the whole thing wrong and figured instantaneous: maybe you read and think I'm not being private and discreet and using a pop band and the efforts of a very talented gentleman to further my own instincts i'm trying not to: if I thought it was either bad or daft, yes, but if one might search for the slightness of truth the truth is a very slender animal scary as an eel: as bright as the glints on a running stream May I? maybe you don't want me to: I'm bored of being embarassed: I'm bored of being sad and shy. Sinister: Now that I own the BBC

So here, at last, is the *top secret* report of my infiltration of TV centre (screentest to be a weatherman). I suggest you burn it after you read it. Put a match in the floppy disc slot or something. So, I arrived at TV centre, purple and sweaty and far too early and went inside. In the reception they have lots of TVs showing Bergerac so that helped to calm my nerves. Charlie Hungerford was having some trouble with a bearded man and luckily Jim was on hand, "Bureau des etrangers!", with his brown leather jacket and rugged good looks. Then a lady came, and took me and a man called James through the high speed revolving doors into TV centre. The weather department is a long way from the entrance and when we got there it was being repaired. When you're about to have an interview the last thing you want to meet is a corridor full of ladders like we did, but we managed to avoid them all and were escorted into the office of Mr David Braime (my mum's favourite weatherman). By now I was pink with excitement. We spoke to his secretaries, who spent their time watching the telly, and I sneaked a look at the email subject lines that were lined up in the inbox on the computer screen. Mr Braime must be a closet biker, cos there were lots of emails about "biker conventions" and "biker friendly pubs". I was very nosy. On the notice board when the secretaries were having a cup of tea I saw a letter asking Mr Braime to a charity event with "TV's John Bardon ("Grandad" from Eastenders)". Wow. A true celebrity. Then it was time for the screentest. I met David, and shook his plastic hand, and he told me to pretend I was presenting the weather. He said, "Just say something like this" and said something very good about "fronts" and "sunny spells" and "rain in Scotland, clearing up later". I know it's his job but he really was very good. I was given "the magic button" and stood in front of the screen, and saw myself with my gangly arms duplicated on screens all about the room. Then it was my turn to give the weather and I was, to be honest, quite rubbish. "It's sunny down there, I think that's Cornwall, but it's cloudy up in Norway." Oh dear. We'll get in touch, they said, and within minutes I was flying out through the high speed revolving doors and onto my train home. I don't have much hopes for an interview, but you never know. Like my mum says, it's an experience, and they liked my shirt. On the way home I saw Larry the Frog in the back of a van with a sailor. "Hello duckie", he said, batting his eyelids and wiggling his bottom. No wonder he's doing so well in the list crush. "Look mummy it's a dinosaur!", said a little girl. "What's he doing with his tail?" There've been a lot of things happening in the last couple of weeks, all related to my relatives in some way. It's too much to explain it all, but it's been quite traumatic, as if the laws of the world had all gone mad for a fortnight. I'm exhausted. Sarah, I'm going to the RAH! and hopefully Arantxa is too. Also, if anyone has any spare tickets, could you get in touch? Sinister: A plea!

Well, this isn't quite how I envisaged my first post to Sinister for two years to be! A plea for help. Is there anyone who has two tickets for the Barrowlands concert on Friday 15th June who would rather go on the Saturday night? WayAhead have managed to be completely incompetent and send us four tickets for Saturday night instead of two for each night, so unless we manage to find tickets for the Friday we're going to have taken the day off work and flown up to Glasgow just to sit in our guesthouse on Friday night twiddling our thumbs. Me: Here are the Thesauruses Clueless Customer #1: No, I'm looking for a book of synonyms. Me: So, it is a nonfiction book? Clueless Customer #2: No, it's a true story. Before you start to snicker at the lack of mute inglorious Miltons that abound in a little bookshop in western Carolina, may I remind you that Sinister is its own little source of disturbing quotage from people. Yes, yes. Why just a few months ago a sinisterette posted about how she loves to go grocery shopping because it's so "erotic." With the exception of a few family reunions and the four years which I lived in Utah, I haven't been around the mentally ill very much but I do believe this girl might benefit from extensive psychiatric treatment. (Then again, from my experience with Erotic Poetry I'm beginning to think that the most popular definition of "erotic" is simply "bad" to which I apologize profusely if this was her intention in the use of this word.) Second to only cruise ships, Grocery Stores would be the best (or is that worst?) setting for my own personal Hades. Because of this, I end up making comments like I did today while passing the produce department. "In Hell, everyone most likely has to eat watermelon naked" which only began a subsequent conversation about the book Cooking In The Nude and what dishes would not be included in such a book. (Trust me, the ones which would be included are worse - Chicken Porno Bleu, Promiscuous Prawns, Vealing Lusty, Fondue Me, etc.) See why I hate grocery shopping? ***Trivia Time!*** Does this have anything to do with Belle and Sebastian, you, or anything you care about? Not a chance! Does it have to do with MEMEMEMEMEMEME! Of course! Now for our sponsored random Laura Llew Trivia Tidbit: I have taken over 20 college credit hours in Religion which is enough for a minor at most universities. OK, so this actually doesn't even mean a thing and I didn't even go to church last Sunday. However, I did watch a good bit of the Simpsons' Marathon so CLOSE ENOUGH. I'm certifiably capable enough to be able to tell you that Matthew 'Fire and Brimstone' Henderson was correct in his summation of: "Jonathan in the Bible was David's best friend growing up. He was also King Saul's son, which made him kind of an enemy." See, aren't you glad we have a good ole' Southern boy on the list now to keep us on the straight and narrow(minded)? You can find all of this in first Samuel and I'm glad this is the original source of B&S new title rather than the other suggested Correlli's Mandolin. (Though personally I have delusions of mediocrity myself. I always set low standards for myself and consistently fail to achieve them.) I always appreciate biblical allusions (aka: delusions). Like when I was recommended the book "Eyeless in Gaza", I was ecstatic to connect that the title was referring to Samson. Personally, I can think of many things I would rather have than a Jonathan to my David - like an Ahab to my Jezebel, a Corianton to my Isabel, a Samson to my Delilah (snip, snip), or a Joseph to my Potiphar's Wife. Too bad I'll most likely just end up with a Dr. Jekyll to my Mr. Hyde. Speaking of Hot Hydes, no one told me WILL PORTER is going to be at the NYC picnic!!!! I'll be there with Belles on!!! Southern ones!! Honey dripping blondes on each arm and maybe one riding piggy back (which might be hard to manage in a hoop skirt but us Southerners are capable of ANYTHING!) Maybe I'll bring a Sebastian too for good measure! Ok, I'm lying like a politician (with my Intern on my desk). On Thursday, I'm leaving for Chicago for work instead of NYC for play :( What's worse is that I'm utterly depleted of mix tapes to listen to. Beware that I'm making a list of people under the "All Bark and That Bites" category who talked schmack about their mix tape abilities and then were UNABLE TO PERFORM. Though I can't complain about the entries so far. Perhaps you're just scared that Rachel Walther or Jer will beat you out. Wimps! Well, it doesn't seem safe to assume that they intended to decrease the sum of human happiness. Certainly they intended to kill millions and millions of people, but their perverse rationale (we can imagine) was that this was the only solution to the world's problems and that it would ultimately lead to a much better world. It's also clear that such a rationale is IRrational (but note that it is irrational only because there is no known way to predict the effects present actions, especially the big ones, will have), but sometimes we choose a course of action irrationally and later find that (by chance) it is the "right" course of action. For instance, we sometimes buy a CD because we like the name of one of the songs (I bought Sinister because I used to fancy myself a bit of a track star...I'd never heard B&S beforehand), and in doing so discover great music, song titles notwithstanding. The problem that my thought experiment raises for Utilitarianism is that such a theory seems to establish moral criteria on which we are forced to say that actions which lead to human happiness are good, even if they at some point involve the death of many humans. it is a very hot afternoon and the sun is in my eyes. I may go from grammatical convention or otherwise discurs; the curs! dis thee and love too, viscious mongrel dog Last night, well, last night, sitting with a homeless person on the steps of the five star North British Hotel explaining why I'd just been thrown out of my £150 hotel room: I gave the night floor manager a thorough dressing-down some four hours later on the same steps... where's a room when one needs one? I waited too long for a pizza at 3am and crunched the receipt in my palm and handed it to the proprietor. Sitting by the usher Hall ush..shhh! (earlier discussing opera and caissons with friends from work) I re-considered and wandered back in and the guy clicked his fingers to someone behind the counter and the very long queue and it was instant delivery to my palms and the best ham and pineapple pizza I ever had (big, luscious chunks of pineapple) and then dawn, a little, and trains home in an hour, like, taxis and nightclubs being all inoperative in these wee small hours just drifting, sitting or wandering folks departing from the night that is now the night before... I go for a walk, like Nick Cave in his great new album and meet the homeless man again as we cross paths on the North Bridge and we nod to each other, like a Jekyll; *dotore*/ monsieur *hyde* as I quoted Serge Gainsbourg to a beautiful woman from southern italy earlier who deftly brushed the bit of her white garment that goes over the shoulder around and down her shoulder the other way and in a lovely way and we nod to each other at this 4.30 am on a bridge Hyde/Jekyll/Hyde doctor or surgeon over the acres of glass roof of the dead railway station. I'd obviously made a loud comment to some other people for I was followed. Turning around to see tension I gave a scrunched bundle of british paper coinage. That would've been the hotel room, I suppose: there had to be some way to even things out with the distant silhouette of the Bank of Scotland peeping into the forefront of the vast stone bulk of castle. I vegetate in front of the music video that preceeds the movie *Go* with the girl from Dawson's Creek. Sinister: Preston School of Industry*

Chaps, > If anyone's going to Preston and knows where the hell the > theatre is, I'd > love to hear from you. Miss Clarke EU? Righty-ho. Directions. From Preston train station: * bimble out of the station. go out of the main doors where the ticket offices are, walk up, and then turn right. walk straight along that street you're on (fishergate), passing a loada banks (so you can get out some 'wonga' for ALE), a Woolworths and HMV, and you'll see a Waterstones bookshop on the right. Turn *left* and you'll be on a big square (flagmarket). Walk diagonally across (to the left hand side of the Harris library), then look up the street going alongside of the Harris and you will see ta da! Preston Guildhall! Directions from bus station: Walk in the direction away from where the National Express coaches are... you'll reach a kiosk at the end of the station, with a subway leading downwards towards Brewsters. It'll be seedy and probably smell of wee. Go down this subway! When you come out of subway, you will be in Guildhall arcade! And therefore, there! Hurrah! I'll try and find some online maps as well, but I can't get proper internet access from here. I'm sure there will be a map on the UCLAN website, here: http://www.uclan.ac.uk (I think!) I would imagine this would show the way! The main street you're looking for is Fishergate, the square is Flag Market and the Guildhall is RIGHT by the bus station, so if you can see how to get there you're basically sorted for Guildhall. Booze beforehand, chaps? Very nice park, in the shape of Avenham park for the twee picnicking option, but also a few half decent boozers and places to eat for those suitably inclined. Ie, great place that does huge garlic bread and cheese, funny little Italian place and ur, McDonalds. The local goth caff will also be open for pints of Vimto (grand!) and nine year old kids in Nirvana tops! YEAH! Mail me for any more suggestions possibly? This is all surrealistically beautiful. I love it! I've said "chaps" twice. Hmmm, time to go and listen to 70s who and have a Cup of Tea. So, who's coming to Scarborough then? So long as the weather's OK, the plan is for a pre-gig picnic on the beach (you can't do that in London!) from about 4pm. South Bay, literally over the road from the theatre. So the stalker-types out there will be able to see band members going in and out during the soundcheck (which normally lasts about 5 hours when B&S are involved...). It's only about 500m from the train station, but if anyone wants a lift I'll be driving up from Harrogate via York (and back again after). Email me... If anyone's going to Preston and knows where the hell the theatre is, I'd love to hear from you. Miss Clarke EU? And I'm looking for somewhere cheap to stay in London, if anybody has any recommendations. Can anyone out there make decent banners / T-shirts? I have an idea brewing... JD (hang on, isn't that a drink?) is going to be Mark & Lard's record of the week the week after next. If you haven't heard it yet, listen to their show, every time they've played it so far they've gone on about how good it is for about 5 minutes afterwards... Imagine a Beach Boys song, with Chris bashing away at his organ all the way through, and you won't be far off (this, incidentally, is a good thing). >From what I've made of the lyrics so far, it appears to be about Stevie fancying his mate's girlfriend, and fantasising about a threesome with them. Not sure what Jonathan and David have got to do with anything, I'm sure they didn't get up to anything like that in the bible... Peel session, 10-12pm (British Summer Time), Tuesday 19th June.
