my father has just stumbled through the door with thirty pounds of beef, and mother's been watching the news again and now she's fretting that the cantaloupe will strike our unsuspecting guests with a bout of salmonella. i say we should all just stick to spinach salad and beer, but, alas, it's not my party. it's never my party these days, mostly because i'm too lazy to phone anyone. my diabolically noisy roommate threw a bash in our flat the other night, and everyone much enjoyed the classic 50's decor and the abundance of cheap beer. i was hiding in my room, and managed to gather a nice bunch of kids by playing amnesiac loudly enough to balance the blaring house music in the sitting room. then we moved into the dining room and were having a wonderful discussion about sex, food, robots, and the clash, listening to some kids' demo tape (of the punk genre), when suddenly a studly male swept into the room, announced that he "hated punk," called us a derogatory term, and proceeded to turn the music down. we all sat silent for a moment, and then a dear boy kindly dressed up in a robot suit and we all took out our aggression by repeatedly punching the box covering his midsection. my other roommate had a party the next night, and the only notable event of the evening was a sweet boy with a beautiful amber ring giving me advice regarding the pros and cons of plucking vs. waxing one's eyebrows. Sinister: On the last bus out of town

Hewwo, Well, I've been in Fife for the weekend, staying with Igor and Jaz. Did you miss me? It was swell. On the first night (which I have very little memory of) I drank too much and Moleksin thought it was swell that I could play the guitar, and I threw up everywhere (and my sick was bright purple, how cool is that? It must be the ribena) and all over everything and everyone, and passed out for a bit, and ended up being put to bed in a urine (not mine) stained bed in a pool of my own vomit. And some boy's girlfriend complained that he found me attractive, when I clearly wasn't at all attractive given that I was spewing my innards up all over the floor. Then I woke up the next morning and felt SWELL and NOT HUNGOVER which was grate. Swell is a word I've picked up. It sort of entered my head and ate up the rest of my vocabulary so I have no choice but to use it. That's my excuse anyway. I like the sound of it. It's swell. On Saturday we broke into the grounds of the Glenrothes mental asylum (which looked a lot like the house in resident evil) and had a picnic there. I was expecting something really cool when we got through all the barbed wire and fencing, but it was actually really scary. The place was overgrown and next to a burnt out cottage and the house was all big with bars over the window and you could hear screams and insane laughter and stuff. It lacked swellness. Also, my bag is now covered in menchies. Cool people like Ally Cook and Carey wrote stuff on it before, but it had to go in the wash after my highly exciting "lets go out with sinister people and be sick over everything I own" spree. So now it says stuff like "AIDS is swell", "I fukc babies", "Igor loves young girls (14-16)" and "STD's- Gotta catch 'em all". It's very cool, especially when muslims sit next to you on the bus and read it very dissaprovingly. Also there's a tampon covered in red felt tip pen dangling from it which looks quite real. I stole a foot and mouth sign and a sign that warns people about horses having anti theft devices. The horse one's in my room, but the foot and mouth one I had to give to some girl who was slitting her wrists over how grate it was. And the grate thing about spending the weekend with Anal Cunt fans is that you can do anything really embarrassing or sound ignorant and they'll go "Don't worry, she's a Belle and Sebastian fan" and people just accept that and pity me. Sorry, i have nothing interesting to talk about except my exciting journey to Fife - Land of the Inbreds. Oh oh oh I have a lot more badges now. My sleeves and back are covered too and its amazing. And I got a My Little Pony badge AND a Captain Planet badge. I had a long bus journey on the last bus out of town, and I listened to Lazy Line Painter Jane because I found it again (I lost it), and Monica Queen just drowns Struan out and its not fair. It's a grate and swell song though. The Aislers Set are good too. The guy who sings about Chicago and New York on The Last Match sounds rather like Struan. And I like Astrid and I don't care if that's uncool. Their last album is superbouncyhappydaisychainmakingilikecheesesogivemeanicelolly kind of pop that everyone should love because if they don't they're clearly suicidal. Did I tell you about what happened to me about last week? It was so surreal. I was with my friends and wearing flares and my badge jacket and these hard kids walked by and one of the girls (you know the ones with the really bad looking gold chains that say their names on it in really cheesy letters, and the soveriegn rings and the blinding white tracksuits who would be in no danger if they got hit by lightning because all their jewelery is very obviously made of plastic) said "Aw look at the states of her", and I wasn't in the mood and I just said "Oh and could you be wearing any more fake gold?" or something incredibly (not) witty like that. And all of a sudden her boyfriend (or lay for the night) stepped out and twisted his chain round his hand (the East Kilbride resident's weapon of choice) and said "Haw, do you wanna do this now?". And I just burst out laughing because I just couldn't believe that he'd said that. And then I realised that he was actually about to hit me with a chain, and he was quite drunk and he was with about 5 of his friends and I was with teenyboppers who would see me get killed rather than back me up in any kind of confrontation, so I made a quick retreat and giggled and waved from a (very) safe distance. If I've said that story already then I've got a very bad remembering head and also no sleep. I should go now and stop being a blip. Hugs, Jen Ps. Sinister: I introduced my English teacher to B&S

Hello, I just spent three days in Ashland, Oregon, which was a six hour bus ride from where I live. It was a field trip, believe it or not. We went there to see The Tempest and Enter the Gaurdsman. It was a thoroughly exhausting trip, mostly because the eighth graders ran around the bus shouting and playing with each other's hair, and standing in front of the TVs, which were showing movies that were being played at the loudest level, so they were impossible to ignore. It took most of my self control not to burst out screaming at them, and the rest of my self control not to beat up my friends, who were pulling my hair. (I don't know why, but people think it's fun to pull on my hair) I am not a crowds person. I don't like being with a lot of people at once. I despise the noise and the cramped space. That's why the bus ride was nothing short of hell for me. Luckily, I had B&S to comfort me...at least on the way to Ashland. On the way back, the batteries were busted, so they made the tape slow down, which made Dirty Dream #2 sound incredibly odd. I didn't bring back many souvenirs because 1. I'm not a crowds person and 2. I hadn't the faintest idea of what I wanted to bring back, though I had considered a pillow for my sister that said "The Queen Sleeps Here". The plays were okay, except in The Tempest, they changed Prospero and Antonio into women. (I'm not kidding!) Anyway, I introduced my teacher, Mrs. Rumfelt, who is 29-almost-30, into B&S on Friday night. You see, she had taken us to a skating party/dance that was supposed to last from 8:30-10:30. I hadn't wanted to go, but I wasn't given a choice, so I was dragged along. Well, as you can imagine, the DJ at the skating rink didn't play anthing good, so I sat in a corner trying to listen to Belle and Sebastian partly to drown out the sound and partly to pass the time. I think it was then that the batteries started to run low. Mrs. Rumfelt came over and asked to listen to them, mostly because she didn't like the music, either. (The DJ wouldn't play any of the 80s music she listened to) I doubt she could hear much because it was so loud there. I had her listen to a verse of Women's Realm (I don't care 'cause I'm by myself...). She said that they seemed to have good lyrics, and they reminded her of what she listened to esp. the Velvet Underground. I smiled and told her that B&S happened to be influenced by the Velvet Underground. (Or is that just a rumor? I could swear that I read somewhere they had been) Well, despite the bus ride and the skating party, the trip was fun, but I'm glad to be back. I hope I didn't put you to sleep. -Holly P.S. I'LL KEEP ON LOSING YOU It had to happen, provided I lived this long. I am, possibly, reading, after 10 years' preparation, William Cooper's Scenes From Provincial Life. It seemed the book for me. Ten years ago. And now. But is it? We don't know yet. HE BURIED PAUL The other day I finished Bracewell's ENGLAND IS MINE at last. If I had it with me I'd tell you what was good and bad about it, in detail. What's bad about it: some bad sentences. What's good: the way that he links pop experience back to the everyday - to the mundane geography of Britain. That's my kind of thing. He really does get better as he goes along. He's fine on Bowie, amusing on Loughborough University, kind of convincing on The 80s: and when Morrissey turns up as the last avenging angel it makes Sense. Has nobody else anything to say about this book? My editor was going to review it once, but didn't. The fact that he didn't is like Eliot having never quite got round to reviewing Ulysses. DON'T TREAD ON ME Another book that I have bought is The Selected Letters of S.J. Perelman. I liked the look of all the addresses from which he writes. Hello, So, another day, another lot of daytime TVs.. the other day I watched CD:UK and Travis asked, repeatedly, for Dido to, er, sing, so Dido reluctantly obliged (she was a bit apprehensive because of the fact that she can't sing very well), but at the end she wanted to thank Fran for the best day of her life. The Manic Street Preachers drank some Ocean Spray from the polluted atlantic ocean but the ever venerable "DJ Pied Piper & The Master of Ceremonies" challenged them to ask themselves if they really really liked it, or indeed, if it is really really wicked. Top show. ALTHOUGH, what I'd hope be able to see on TV soon tho, is Robin telling me that it will be sunny and warm on the 16th June, for my "BL!" ticket has arrived! Woohoo! Yay! Hurray! But, unfortunately not RAH!, cos I don't have a ticket for that.. BUT if anyone wants to sell one to me, (or the 15th June in Glasgow for that matter), then you will have my eternal love (if you're a girl you'd even get a kiss.. aren't you lucky?) please please please please please please please please. Hello. I have spent an awful lot of money today. I feel very naughty because now my bank balance actually reads #2.08. I believe this is an all time low. The causes of this depletion were: a) buying a B+S ticket for scarborough- hurrah, hurrah, Belle and sebastian visit the seaside. I am looking forward to the possibility of eating sticks of rock whilst i watch them. Not in a twee way though, because as its name suggests, rock is hard. b) a ticket for the leeds festival. oh my god. #80. ouch etc. Less than atp, but still enough to make me take my time handing over the money note by note. Which infuriated the busy ticket lady. But the lineup is looking lovlier by the day ( at least in the tents away from the overhyped headliners ) c ) train ticket to glasgow for barrowlands gig. mmm. i would have thought they'd be free to such a worthy cause, but apparantly not. Larry the frog sounds very handsome. At the moment there is a large frog residing in my sister's paddling pool. Unfortunately it is the colour of dysentry and therefore not useful for decorative purposes. Green is a much better colour for a frog. It's traditional. I nearly spent more money yesterday buying tigermilk on vinyl. It was looking so tempting on ebay, and at #56 I thought i would quite like it, even if only to take pictures of it in various positions in my room. These could then be sold on as porn of a sort for obsessive B+S fans. I could have made my money back. But then somebody kept outbidding me, and at #75 I got scared and ran away to eat marmite until the sale was over. It was probably somebody off sinister. i bear you no hard feelings. grrr. hehe. I must go, i have babbled and it is boring. GraceX p.s Is anyone else doing the new a/s levels? Bloody stupid idea. In regard to your post: THE LOCUST!! now your talking. San Deigo's monsters of mayhem. Probably some of the fastest, shortest, craziest, loudest songs you'll hear, very good stuff. They're going on tour and I deffinately suggest you check them out,(just watch out for people lighting firecrackers in the pit), I gonna see them in Philly, and my buds black dice are playing a couple shows with them. Weezer on the other hand.... trade all their cd's in for more locust. I'm sickened by that band and all that surrounds them, as much as they deny it they're complete media whores.
