Hiya Sinisterines! Lots of people seem to have their hands on some sort of version of the new DCW album already, including myself and Ben. Maybe I just focus on the negative too much, but it seems like a lot of people who have heard it say they don't like it so much. To everyone out there who hasn't heard it yet, Ben and I think it's brilliant and we can't stop listening to it, so never fear. You just might like it, too. I think that if I didn't have it, I'd be sort of dreading its release because I'd almost be afraid of disappointment. But I'm excited - I can't wait to buy the real thing soon, too! The reason I like DCW so much is because it seems to be B&S on a different level. I don't need to hear the same type of thing from a band on every album, I like a bit of variety. This one has a great energy to it. It still sounds like B&S, but it's fairly upbeat. My favorite song is "Stay Loose". I think the influence of Trevor Horn really comes through on this one, and it's very '80's sounding. But there is a breakout bit in the middle that it very bare and you can hear how the song sounds without the effects - essential acoustic. Plus the opening line is "I was choking on a Corn Flake, you said 'Have some toast instead'" which just goes to show that the old Sinister Rachels breakfast theme has been influential on Belle & Sebastian, too! I like this song because I think it's a good ending track to the album, as well. But honestly, there is not one song that I don't like on the album. "Asleep On A Sunbeam" took a while to grow on Ben, but now he loves it, too. Speaking of breakfast themes, I must apologise for not responding about the LA treasure hunt sooner. Yes, the treasure was hidden at Iguana vintage clothing. It took the 3 girls who won (Mandy, Crystal and Esther) something like 8 hours to complete the treasure hunt. The treasure was tickets and passes for the LA show, and a cigar box that Stuart sent including a pink pig nail scrubber, a '60's style Scottish post card, a great pink brocade neck tie, a scarf, a cd of a Belfast gig, a 1938 Scottish Exposition Pin, a Belle et Sebastien child's book, and then I put the cigar box inside a box of Belle & Sebastian cereal that I made. Peter Crooks and I worked very hard to organize that treasure hunt, and I was very happy that 3 such nice people won it. We were very surprised that they found it so fast, though! In other news, MARIANNA LONGMIRE (the NEW Ken Chu of this season,) arrives at LAX on Sunday morning. She will be staying with myself and Mr. Bapps for 10 days and she will even be here for MY BIRTHDAY on Tuesday! Hoorah! We are beside ourselves with excitement! I dub next Thursday "Llewsday" as it is a certain LL's BIRTHDAY on that day! You still have time to shower her with gifts! Damn, us Libras are so cute, aren't we!?! You just can't resist! Considering it looks like old folks week, I wanted to post something. Where are the night owls who used to chat in #Sinister? I have run into a few people who provided me a little information about those I asked about. But the new kids didn't quite get into "Whell Of John" as I had hoped. Four and a half years passes and my typing is even _worse_. Come chat, I can tell you how I almost died - twice! That's my excitement for the past half-decade. That and finally The Fall came to Chicago-uh and didn't play "Chicago Now!" the bastards! I just noticed one can sing "Oswald Defence Lawyer" using the subject line... and I visited Buster Keaton's Italian villa in Hollywood, it was in in the middle of a restoration to bring back the glamor of the early 20th century. I spent a day in the place where every star of the 20's and 30's came to party; the sense of film history was heavy - and I got to talk to Leonard Maltin and actor James Karen. I stood on the battlefields of Gettysburg; watched dolphins at play off the shores of Georgia; was awed at the majesty of the Smokey Mountains; saw a bald eagle sittin' on a highway sign; visited the world's tiniest church; stepped into Mark Twain's octogon study and took a photo of his typewriter; loved and lost. Hi People, since i don't have a ocmputer with internet at home anymore (but a computer none the less) I have to write at the library. So, I will not be able to write anything during the weekend, so, I thought, hell, I'll write a short post. Things I wanted to tell you: 1. Thanks to Mr Watson and other people in the past I now feel really, really inspired to keep writing, so thank you. 2. Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is so fucking good, plus that record has the best documentary by Sam Jones called I Am Trying To Break Your Heart... try to watch it because it's amazing. And Jeff Tweedy is lovely. 3. Brier was talking about a picture, which I think is the same one I saw B&S had used for cover when a journalist who had gotten a promo of it, so, are they using one pic for the promo of Dear.. or is it a totally different one? Hmm. 4. Sometimes there are so many thoughts inside my head that I don't know what to do with them. 5. I interviewed a band I sort of know but not really, mostly because I guess I'm a fan. Anyways, considering that it was a band consisting of boys between 20-23 yrs old, and that 3 out of 4 are super cute I think I did well even managing to speak. I'm so hopeless around boys. I really am. Ah. But this time, haha, I even took a nice, a NICE picture of them. I did the interview today. And It's gonna be in the culture section of one of two school papers which I'm both culture and cheif editor on. Our class is divided into two staffs and I boss around with my poor classmates. HAHA. Sinister: Offbeat 3/10 - promo night for DCW

Hi all, Just in case anyone doesn't know already the next Offbeat on Friday 3rd October is a promo night for the new B&S album; there'll be a free picture raffle (i.e. tickets will have marginally-B&S-related pictures on them such as horses, pasties, tigers, mayflys etc), and the winners will get all sorts of DCW promo goodies - CD's, posters, videos, aprons (!?) And we'll be playing a few tracks off the album too of course. However the main reason for posting this is to advise anyone coming, especially if you are trekking from afar, to get there early and queue up - the first Offbeat of term sold out much more rapidly than we expected, and with such goodies up for grabs and it being the Friday of the first week proper of term, we're expecting this one to be even busier. It could well be that if you're not in the queue before the doors open you won't get in next week. Eleven days and counting! Or ten days if you're in the UK. Or just THREE days if you're in Japan. Why does Japan get it a week early? It don't sound fair. Anyone in for a Tokyo meetup in 3 days? Fukkit, I'm flying over there. I gotta. I haven't been this excited for a release since... it would have to be... OK, Fold Your Hands. I know, I know, I could save myself $988 in airfare and just download the damn albumm, but I like the whole product, I like to LOOK at something while I listen to it, or at least hold it in my hands. Or else it's like meeting someone on the telephone. And did someone mention that the promo photo of the waitress (seen at www.dearcatastrophewaitress.com) will NOT be the albabumn cover? Whatta shame, if not. I love the picture. And her t-shirt... "Stressez-moi? Jamais!" is classic. I think they should use it. Pease remind me to have a shower, i keep forgeting and i probably smell grim. Sinister: Almost Amish

I've just been skimming through posts lately but I didn't hear a mention of the new David Byrne album "Lead Us Not Into Temptation" (music from the film "Young Adam") yet. It features members of Mogwai, The Delgados, Reindeer Section and Belle and Sebastian. It's fantastic and mellow and dreamy... and I think Byrne's done a good job of letting each of the participating groups shine in their own way. There's even a Mingus cover ("Haitian Fight Song") which is the most upbeat one. Some songs are similar to the better ones off "Storytelling..." the piano ones, not the crap ones with talking and sound clips from the movie! I was surprised to see this released on the Thrill Jockey label, one of my favorites. I am probably appreciating this album more than usual since I've had very little to listen to lately on my Walkman cassette player during the power outages from hurricane Isabel. This is day 8 with no power at home and it may be as long as October 2 before it's restored. At least I can use the water now without boiling it first. That was no fun. This is my first day back at work since last Wednesday because we didn't have power here either. I am trying to not be jealous of fellow Richmond Sinisterites whose names start with "V" WHO GOT POWER BACK ON SATURDAY! Grr grrrr grrrrrrrr. I'm sorry I missed Kim and others at the DC meetup and "The Wag." I went up to Philadelphia that weekend for My Morning Jacket, The Shins and Guided by Voices (amazing show!!!) and found out Matt Pond PA and Luna were the next night and that I could get a sweet hotel room for $100 cheaper than the usual rate.... so I stayed. There are so many interesting things to do in Philly I ran out of time. Hmmm, I wonder if I should head up for the Tower Theatre show????? Very near my hotel was Benjamin Franklin's grave. It's a large, simple flat slab of marble with his name and his wife's. Atop the marble were a bunch of pennies people had left. I'd never heard of this tradition and neither had the little girl next to me who asked her mother why it was done. Her answer? "Because his picture is on the penny!" hello sinister. i am officially obsessed with the new death cab for cutie album. i promised myself i wouldn't take advantage of the opportunity to listen to it before it came out. but then, when faced with it, i (as with all things i truly love) gave in. the song is 'a lack of color.' move over photobooth (and i never thought i'd say that). *** i am happy the list is so nostalgic right now. it echoes that feeling i had a few weeks ago when i decided to come back. and. in a not so weird way, the way i felt when i joined. i feel like i don't know anyone again, and i kind of like it. *** the season is changing again in middle america, and i am ready for it this time. i had been wanting a gray, rainy day from the first day i moved into my new apartment; the front room is perfect for cloudy weather. and finally, a few weeks ago, it did rain; i was asleep on the couch, and i woke up to the sound. and lying there watching our cheap, pastel chiffon curtains move over the open windows, i knew this fall would be perfect, if only because the light in the apartment always is the softest yellow, and the sound of eleventh street below the windows always is a quiet bustle. when the leaves turn, our porch, three floors up and surrounded by trees, will be covered with reds and oranges-- i keep writing about colors. *** i hope, as in past times, no one decides to send me any poetry parrots, sestina weasles or villanelle vermin of any kind. i met with a professor this morning to discuss my thesis project, which, we decided, will be a collection of poems. i have to hand in ten to fifteen every three weeks, and i think if any literary wildlife showed up on my lovely windowsills, i wouldn't even have to go to the trouble of turning them away. the crazy look in my eyes, set to arrive in approx. 21 days, will be enough to frighten any poor soul. .xo.lou. ===== www.somewhereinbetween.net __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Sinister! I am back, and I'm not going anywhere. I am skipping class in this very moment, but I was late anyways and who gives a fuck anyways, huh? I hear the "aaah!" from my imaginary daytime-talkshow-audience. Last night I had the best conversation with Amanda on the phone. We were just having the usual conversation about our future career as the world's greatest band, rock men and The Simpsons when everything turned very, very, weird indeed: Amanda: I know you wanted that guy we met before meeting Stevie and Sarah. Me: The guy with the "I'm Twee" t-shirt? Amanda: Well who else. There were only weird record company women and him there. Me. True. Well, hell yeah woman! Of course I wanted him, he was lovely. A: are you saying you would've had sex with him there if you could? M: I'm not saying anything woman. I'm just sayin he was a might fine man... AND I WOULD, BUT ON A BACKSTREET! A: EW! Really? M: Nah, I'm just trying to gross you out. A: You did. And because you said backstreet, I'm afraid we have to choose a Backstreet Boy to have sex with in a dark... backstreet. M: Fuck off! A: I'd choose Nick. M: But... A: It's alright, you can choose him to. M: I don't want to sleep with any of them, they are the ugliest people on earth. Urgh. But ok, thanks. A: You could always get... Howie! M: AHHH! In that case, you'd get Brian! A: Well, he'd be my second choise. M: SHUT UP! You've even thought about this before. I didn't even like the Backstreet Boys when I was ten years old and had a crappy taste in music. But Brian? COME ON! He looks like some sort of overgrown freaky baby, especially when singing those high notes. A: True. M: The Backstreet Boys... Amanda, Amanda, where is this going? A: I don't know. I just wanted to ask. M: Hmmm. I'm worried about you. Anyways, did you see the new Simpsons episode? A: Ah yes, how good was that? M: It was really fucking good tonight. There were too many good parts. I loved the part when the ushers at the cinema had to chase Homer away from the movies with movie-sized Kit-Kats. A: Oh yeah, that was brilliant. I love The Simpsons. M: Me too. Have you seen the commercial? A: When Homer's freestyle-playing the banjo with a poisonous snake? M: Yep! A: I wish I could watch The Simpsons all the time. M: Me too. You want to hear our next big hit? A: Oh yeah, sure. Is it the one that sounds a bit like Interpol? M: The very same [guitar and singing break via phone] M: Let's listen to the reindeer section. [quiet, whilst putting on record. Listening for a wee bit. Simultaneously: Me: Uh huh! Yeeeeeh, feelin the flow feelin the flow... you ain't got no leeeegs... huh huh huh... we will rawk ya... WOOOORLD! Amanda: Sing it y'all... yes yes y'all... uh-HUH! The Phoners! BLING BLING! ... Me: did we just to a really frightening hip-hop jam? Amanda: I'm afraid we did. Me: But then, we always do. Amanda: Yeah. Me: We need a hip-hop alter ego to go by. Amanda: Yes yes y'all. RepreSENT! Me: Get ready for The Phonizzlas world! [fits of giggles for about ten minutes] Me: Do you really think we'll take over the world with our super catchy music? Amanda: Have you ever doubted it? Me: I've had my moments. But in my heart I knew all along that we're good. Amanda: Good. Because we are. ---------- That was all of the egocentric, perverse and bizarre The Phoners-conversations for now, people. To conclude: Amanda and I are smug and bizarre and would say no to any Backstreet Boy in any backstreet any day. And the reason I'm not in Natural Science is because the teacher is Swedish, this is an English school and he simply CANNOT speak English. He's making up words. We're spending a billion weeks (or four) on waste water treatment plants, and I am not in the mood for learning about "sandfangs", "flockolation" or "bassangs". So til next time. Astrid xx Ps. All this talk of old times has brought me out of hibernation...This morning I booked my ticket for Bath Pavillions on 7th December. Something (desperately needed) to look forward to. Looking backwards however, I decided to search the Sinister Archives to see what bilge I used to post when I was last here. Weirdly, whilst seeing things I posted in the past usually makes me cringe, my old sinister postings made me smile. I crashed in on Wed, 27 Aug 1997 at 18:34:11 with a de-lurking post not dissimilar to this one - mentioning 'the new list', which suggests there was an old list, which I can't remember at all. I disappeared after the 5th November 1999 after confessing to attending a W.A.S.P gig eleven years previously. I think I needed to go away and think seriously about things after a confession of that magnitude... In between I rarely managed to post on topic, but people generally tolerated my musings. I hope you'll all indulge me once again. So, I'm back, the band are back, and today I can smell the winter coming for the first time this year. Happy days! Wellity wellity wellity. Isn't it grate to see the list all active again just as ms mcneill was leaving. is there a connection i hear you all ask? the long answer yes with an if and the short answer is no with a but. I am not of the ancients or elders of this list. although i did join in '99 when brit pop was still at it's dizzying heights and the strokes were still finishing elementary school. Actully that new strokes song is great. i sat through 2 whole hours of gonzo ( which is strange in itself) to see it. i am a bit confused though. the song ended suddenly and switched into something else. is this the song or poor editing on MTV's part. i hope it is the latter. so first of all i suppose i should explain myself. i am back and i hope it is ok. there nuff said. second of all i had the dogs bollox of a summer and it came to an end. with a bang. spent it in barcelona which was nice and sunny and so so so cheap. ( a round of beers for four people in a bar in the gothic area cost ?8 compared to a round of similar beers here costing ?16) i was never so glad to be a wage slave in ireland as it meant i could live like royalty (without the inbreeding) for a month and still come back with money with which to wipe my arse. our landlord screwed us out of our deposit however and now i again have to be a wage slave to pay itoff. in other news i started uni yesterday. looking around the lecture theatre there were people in tracksuits and foxy celtic hair pasted down with gel. i have expected to be egged for wearing a bag that wasn't jansport. then there was also the arty types that i expected to see including one particularly good looking girl that had huge earphones and a mad long dr whoesque scarf. out of the 1000 freshers the dean said yesterday that 45% of us will probably drop out. i hope not. i like the lower half of my body. i suppose i could adjust to walking around on my hands but i don't think i should have to. in music news i must say the new b+s stuff has me a bit excited. piazza new york catcher is perhaps the best thing that they have produced in a long long long time. i can;'t wait to hold the grubby album in my pristine hands. i have been listening a lot to beth gibbons. if you don't have it buy it, everyone else is so why shouldn't you.
