Sinister: lunch with stuart

last friday i found an all-caps plea in my inbox from a friend, asking me to tell her what stuart murdoch looked like. i sent off the URLs of two of rachel's photos from the LA show, and quickly got back an exclamation of thanks from my friend. why did she want to know? she was to meet him at the 24th st BART (san francisco's subway) station, which is sort of like saying 'i'll meet you at the transamerica pyramid,' as the station has two outlets above ground (on opposite sides of the street) and is quite large. why was she meeting him? what was he doing back in san francisco? she was to take a few quick photos of him for a magazine she works for. i could come along, she said, if i wanted. but i couldn't. fast forward a few hours. a group of us indie-internet-nerds have a weekly friday lunch gathering at a different restaurant each week. derived from a naughty spoonerism, we call this group 'funch luckers.' my friend the photog is a member, as are about 30 other people. and today's funch was at zeitgeist, a spot popular with motorcyclists and bike messengers that's on the warm fringes of the mission district. it's got a wonderfully unreconstructed patio (dirt and rough-hewn picnic tables) and serves food and beer (beer is perhaps the unifying factor of funch, and has led to many an unproductive friday), and is quite comfortable. somehow my friend convinced stuart to come along to funch. there were about a dozen of us as usual, and i have no idea at all what he thought of it. topics of conversation picked up quickly and changed direction across the table: barbecues, orgies, work, children, guitar solos, friendster.com, radio shows, personal gossip, good natured teasing. all about us, of course. as this post is all about me. stuart was charming and sweet. he was in SF taking a break for an extra week or so, with no partcular plans as far as i could tell. tho i was sitting next to him and fairly ecstatic (i have been on sinister since early 98, i bleeve, got IYFS in 97), i tried not to monopolize him. no one really was, i guess - everyone was sort of chattering with each other as they usually would. he talked about the kcrw show - how the group could barely hear anything thru the headphones at first, how kcrw'd sent someone in at the last second to tell them which words weren't allowed on-air (no idea if 'wank' would be alright). he did quite a good nasal-y american accent. (amusingly,) he brought up playing dvds on laptops and i had to confess to having the fan's own dvd at my house (from the treasure hunt), & having tried all my friends to see which would switch the region on their player so we could watch it. he talked about how his laptop was a good bed-warmer after a dvd on a cold winter night. we gabbed a bit about the aislers set, and about the berkeley show. he was looking for a soccer game on sunday and my pal dan tried to help figure something out, but here i was helpless. my knees, see. i'm glad to see the Other Ian ended up sorting it all out (in a manner of speaking). there's more, isn't there? but i can't really put it all down here. i was a bit giddy, i guess. and i had to go back to work, believe it or not. and the jobless amongst us (about half; sf's economy is tepid at best) stayed to soak up the sun and have a laugh and a beer, happy. it was great to meet stuart and have a bit of a chat with him. i wonder what he thought of us, an odd and sarcastic bunch of nearly-30s-ish people out on a sunny patio on a friday? not much, i'll wager! ian +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Well, hello. Didn't know it was me, did you? Enormous thanks to List Mum for letting me out of the nursery in time to post the (apparently protested) final news about the D.C.-area B&S Picnic. I post because I care. Also because contacting me personally is a hassle, and I want to make this hassle-free for all possible attendees. Worry not, Opposition. I'll keep it as condensed as I am able. - Saturday, September 6th, 12noon - Cleveland Park Metro station for meet-ups, thanks to the generosity of Lisa. She'll meet you there and lead you to the picnic site. - Direct-to-site picnickers should aim for Rock Creek Park, Site #1. It's at the corner of Tilden & Park. Sinister: Stop coming to my house

So, long time, no post (not that I've ever really posted all that much). ****Music**** I have recently begun buying CD's again - after a large money shortage. Such delights as Godspeed you black emperor and mogwai have made themselves properly known to me. I also obtained the relatively new sigur ros single (with enclosed DVD) which contains two rather marvelous videos (and one i regard as being slightly less good). Also, to my surprise, I found myself enjoying Ryan Adams (very un-belle and sebastian fan-like I know) although I have managed to work out almost exactly who influenced him on every song of the album. On a different note (excuse the pun) I also recieved an early birthday present of a new acoustic guitar. I envisage this of being much use at university which I will shortly be attending... ****University**** I have now been offered a place at the university of nottingham. Any advice on gigs? I hear the rescue rooms are good (camera obscura soon :-)) Is there any form of nottingham massive for sinister folk? ****Girls and stuff (sorry)**** "Now I've been told that I can't be with the person I love simply because we live apart" I remember someone posting a while ago saying something along those lines (seems like a lot of effort to find the exact quote, sorry). I am now afraid that I will be told the same thing tomorrow. Perhaps I shouldn't be so pessimistic, and perhaps if she does say that she'll be right, I don't suppose I really know. Sinister: Mio caro assassino

Days off eh? You can't beat 'em. This is my second Monday off of three, the first being the bank holiday and the third being another days' leave next week. Ooooh, working a five day week after all that is going to be so, so hard. But there are so many good things I can do on days off that I can't do at work, like going into C!H!A!T! They block it at work, tho this problem can be solved using something called an http tunnel, allegedly. Last night, I went up to LUNDUN to see Stefano's My Dear Killer gig at the Arts Cafe. I nearly didn't get there at all. I left in plenty of time, only to encounter tube train CHAOS which meant that emergency buses were being laid on to take the place of the Circle Line. Unfortunately, my bus driver didn't seem to know where he was supposed to be going and the situation was hardly helped by a lady who sent him in the wrong direction entirely! We were at the Angel Islingon before people realised what was happening and started shouting "You're going the wrong way!" So back down the Pentonville Road we went, past a very old piece of graffiti (No Poll Tax - presumably at least thirteen years old) and back on track (well not literally, although the driver saying "I'm a train" to everyone who tried to board thinking it was a normal bus service was quite amusing). When we finally got to Liverpool Street, I ran in what I thought was the direction of the Toynbee Hall. I would have made a very bad homing pigeon as I got lost in the backstreets of Aldgate and, huffing and puffing, finally made it! After parting with my cash and having something which looked like a cross twixt a snowflake and an anarchist sign drawn on my mitt (has the rubber stamp died a death? I blame the demise of the Brown system) I finally entered the venue. I think I must have missed Stefano's first couple of tunes, but I grabbed a beer and saw Paul Healy standing near the front. For the last number, Stefano summoned a drummer from the audience and they launched into a song which really ROCKED and had a wig-out ending a la European Son to Delmore Schwartz. As Ken would (and did) say, \m/. The second act was also a single person under a group name, Prague - the spirit of White Town (or The The, or insert your own individual-recording-under-group-name here) lives on. Prague is coincidentally where I'm off on my hols in November....I'm spending a day in Bristol beforehand as I'm flying from Lulsgate (Bristol airport). Anyway, third act up was Meets Guitar, who started off as a one piece but became a three piece. The drummer looked a bit like my old Zoology tutor (though didn't share his taste in loud shirts) and played the drums with his arms at a rather odd angle. The singer and guitarist had a shirt which bordered on the C&W in style. I tried to think of another band they sounded like but couldn't...their sound had a bit of a country twang to it (as did the singer's voice, but not with the kind of excesses displayed by the Broken Family Band), they were a bit bluesy in places, the bassline on the last song was interesting - actually the bassist was probably the most musically accomplished of the lot. Then last up were Morose, who swapped instruments about quite a bit, including a squeezebox and a "shakey egg", and played songs which were mostly slow, but not morose. I took the opportunity to go outside and look around between acts...the Arts Cafe is an unusual venue, the buildings round about seem cobbled together in an odd way and display a variety of styles. There is a little sculpture in an archive and a clock tower in a rather unexpected place. Paul told me about a club called Penelope Tree and I told him that Penelope Tree was a sixties model. I've been playing the Felt song of that name today, together with everything else on that comp apart from Index. Robin sent the link to the cover which has been decided upon. I didn't really have a preference between the two....I'm just pleased that the general layout, style and typography of B&S album covers is being preserved despite the label change. And thanks Robin for DICKYWUSS. I'm glad to see that after DICKSWAY, DICKWIPE and (ouch!) DICKSAW someone has come up with something which continues the tradition of trisyllabic, euphonic almostcronyms. Speaking of Robin, does anyone else think the guy in the RAF recruitment adverts on the telly looks a bit like him? I learnt earlier today that Ken doesn't know who Damo Suzuki is - his fall from grace continues...... Hullo again, I'm sorry about my mad spurt of emails earlier, but i have just worked out what caused it. I had a meeting today and took a cup of tea in with me, to help time pass a little more smoothly. Unfortunately for me I had forgotten to take the teabag out of the mug, so by the time i reached the bottom the tea was *super strong*. I think the overdose of tea drove me a little bonkers. I was wandering the corridors with wild eyes, mad feet and shifty fingers. So I think that perhaps explains this whole sorry episode. I would rather forget it all to be honest. Just forget that you ever read them. Pretend that you read something improving instead, like the guide to gentlemens' shirt-wearing etiquette that I am reading at the moment. Never leave your tie on till the last moment when undressing. ROBIN HAS AN ENCOUNTER WITH A SPARROW I dreamt I was a mouse. A mouse with blue shoes. As I scurried through the neighbours' wall on my way to their box of cornflakes I heard a tapping on the window. I looked up and saw a sparrow. A sparrow with a trilby hat. "Squawk!" he said. "Squeak!" I replied. "Hold on a second," he said. "Do you speak English?" "Doesn't everyone these days?" I replied. "Indeed. Hey, you seem like a smart fella, d'ya wanna buy one of these?" He lifted a wing to reveal a row of cheap watches. "Oh, I don't think so," I said. "They're the best quality," he said. "Bulgarian!" "But that one only has numbers up to eight," I spotted, shrewdly. "Oh, well, er.." he paused and pulled at a feather or two. "Well," he said, "How about this then?" He lifted his other wing and revealed a copy of Dear Catastrophe Waitress. "Crikey!" I said. So later on, when I was full on cornflakes, I put it on the stereo. I have to say I liked it quite a lot. The funny thing is, though, that the version I heard was slightly different to the one that Katrina just talked about. The tracks were in a slightly different order for a start, and there was another song called Travellin' Light. The sparrow sold me a dodgy version. I might have known!! It seems quite strange, though, sparrow or no sparrow. My theory is that either Katrina has missed a song out (unlikely, considering the NME doesn't list it either) or there are, in fact, only twelve songs on the album and Travellin' Light has been dropped. I wasn't very keen on it anyway, so I'm quite happy about this. And with all the words about Jesus on the new record (DICKYWUSS, I think) it's no surprise that Stuart has decided 13 is an unlucky number and gone for a holy twelve. Robin x PS: I'm thinking of posting my wild theories on the new album, including a fair few references to some of the songs. If don't want to open your presents until christmas, and think this might spoil it, then don't read it. I'll try to remember to put a warning in the subject line. PPS: Gatefold double vinyl! Oooh!! ROBIN PROPOUNDS SOME WILD AND ILL-THOUGHT-OUT THEORIES THEORY ONE: I think this is the third age of Belle and Sebastian: First Age = Tigermilk > 3..6..9..Seconds of Light Second Age = The Boy With The Arab Strap > Jonathan David Third Age = I'm Waking Up To Us > ? I haven't thought this idea through, really, and so tomorrow it probably won't make any sense and I'm not going to explain it much because it should be self-evident. However, what I think characterises the latest records (the Third Age) is that Murdoch has finally shown that he can write great songs that aren't "typical belle and sebastian songs" yet aren't mere pastiche. The Pinefox is right about I'm Waking Up To Us. THEORY TWO: Struan described the new album as "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue", and although I'm sure he just made that comment up on the spot I think it's pretty true. Something old: Lord Anthony; Dear Catastrophe Waitress, Wrapped Up In Books Something new: Stay Loose; Piazza, New York Catcher; If You Find Yourself Caught In Love Something borrowed: Stevie and Sarah's songs - what are they called? oh i don't care Something blue: Step Into My Office, Baby I'm not quite sure whether I'd put I'm a Cuckoo in old or new. It's somewhere inbetween. I think it's excellent. I think that if you like I'm Waking Up To Us (ep) you will like Dear Catastrophe Waitress (lp). I'm Waking Up To Us is a great example of a new Murdoch song, with angry, direct lyrics. Marx and Engels is a wonderful example of an old Murdoch song. I Love My Car is a light music-hall number. Struan's songs on the new album follow more-or-less the same pattern. THEORY THREE: Belle and Sebastian have managed to make an album that works as a whole. TWATTYBUS and FISHYCLAP never hung together for me, and were broken by the different styles. The new album (I like the sound of DICKYWUSS) is stronger for its different styles. The orchestral pieces that showpiece Lord Anthony help it fit in where it otherwise wouldn't.
