INTRODUCTION hello everyone, LITERATURE REVIEW i've been thinking of writing to sinister for a while, but circumstances have conspired against me. well in truth I've just been too lazy, but I prefer a lame excuse to the truth anyday. I have been enjoying the plethora of perfect posts lately, especially those of Mr Robin Stout. I know I'm not the only one on sinister who thinks he's a bit of alright. And having seen Trixie's eyelashes, I can confidently say that mine are much longer and sexier. Not that Trixie's eyelashes aren't perfectly lovely... METHOD I purchased a Hello Kitty badge maker a couple of months ago, and after a few initial dramas (ie plastic bit snapping) I ended up making about 120 badges. Today I packed up my pin-up board and headed on down to the uni markets to sell my wares. About an hour had passed and there wasn't a whole heap of badge selling going on. In fact there was no badge selling going on. This may have had something to do with he fact I was listening to a discman, reading a book, looking scared, and not really getting into the whole customer service thing. But then inspiration came via satellite - twas a text message from the lovely Miss Helen, suggesting I raise the corners of my mouth and show my teeth to customers. After a few mishaps (customers seemed to be scared when I showed them my fillings), I soon learnt that a slight uprising of the lips does wonders. At exactly 10:20 a likely looking boy wandered over to my stall, his lapel resplendent with badges. This boy is going to pay f! or my lunch I thought to myself. Unfortunately he refused to buy me lunch, not even a coffee, but he did buy FIVE badges. I was overjoyed - hours of flicking through my old Select's looking for nice badge pictures had paid off. Well kind of. Over the next couple of hours I sold about 20 more. At 12 RTR-FM (local Perth radio station who play good music) started broadcasting from the markets, and they commented on air about the bored looking boy selling badges and CD's. Seizing the opportunity I went over and requested Le Pastie de la Bourgeoisie, and they put it on and funly made fun of my lack of customers. Unfortunately the song didn't have the effect I had hoped for, namely everyone stopping what they were doing and dancing, but Helen (who had joined me for lunch) and I got to nod our heads for a few minutes. Plus I got some free advertising from the lovely RTR folk. Business was a little slow for the rest of the day, but I ended up selling around 30 badges for a grand profit of $48.90. Which ain't so bad. RESULTS Thanks to all those Oz Tape X-Changers, I hope everyone has received their tape/CD. If y'all let me know that you're interested in Round 2, say the word and I shall draw arrows connecting people on a piece of thin white cardboard. If anyone else in Australia or New Zealand wants to join in the fun just say the word and you too will have an arrow pointing to your name on the aforementioned piece of thin white cardboard. DISCUSSION As Perth is currently being graced by the presence of Miss Marianna, it only seems right that there should be some kind of event ending in nic. May I propose a pubnic this Friday (the 12th), maybe followed by some bowling action? Let me know Perth people. Jeez, I stop reading my Sinister-mails for a week and a half and look what happens: >>I just read in this month's Utne Reader that statistically Australian girls are most likely to put out on the first date. WHat does this mean for Miss Trixie Firecracker and her recent night out? I can only wonder.<< !! I get called a hussy! What exactly are you trying to say about me, Jay? I am in fact quite a demure and shy lady (though the rest of this post may perhaps challenge that image). Anyway, I know you're all really reading this because of the titillating subject line and not for my indignation at Jay's insinuations, so here goes. Last weekend I had a dream. Featured in this dream was the one and only Miss Laura Llew looking lovely as always, and, I must say, especially hott and sexxy too. I have forgotten pretty much all of this dream, I can't recall a storyline or plot or even a location. There was one bit that stuck with me though, the part where I KISSED LAURA. !! That's right kids, myself and Llew locking lips. I must say that she is a Very Good Kisser too. Boys (especially Chubby Jewish ones covered in chocolate) and Girls With Glasses* take note. That's right Sinisters, I have started having dreams about YOU. No one is safe. A few weeks ago I dreamt about GayJay. He was painting a chair which he then sat on while the paint was still wet. Silly boy. Then I had a dream about Jayward (who is not strictly a Sinister boy I know, but he is a #sinister boy and that is close enough) looking very suave. I wonder who it will be next? Any suggestions? My subconscious is a fun place to hang out, really. Don't be afraid. I have also dreamt of Miss Marianna from time to time, but then I have known her for quite a while... and I've never been engaged in a nocturnal pash with her, in dream or reality (which, I am sure those of you who can vouch for her foxxiness would agree, is quite my loss). However, Miss M is currently travelling around the world, and she will be stopping in Melbourne VERY SOON. Perhaps my chance has come at last? Enough of that sauciness. Here are some belated non-saucy things which I would like to belatedly say: 1. A Very Long Time Ago there was a picnic in Melbourne. No one -- as far as I can remember -- Reported Back. Shame on us Melbourne-Sinisters. So yeah, we had some kids show up, and since most everyone likes seeing their name in Sinister-posts**, this is who was there: Longest Lurker Jim, Amiable Amy, Important Visitors from New Zealand Lawrence and his lovely wife, Honorary Sinisterine Vanessa, and Surprise Special Guest Star Neil Robertson. Unfortunately*** Miss Julie and Mr David were out of town that weekend (probably rock climbing or some such thing, silly kids), so they were unable to attend. On a side note, of course as you all know, these two are now Mr and Mrs Julie&David -- a belated congratulations to the pair of you. 2. Many many twee/fey/decidedly non-twee or fey thank yous must be relayed to the terrific Terry Underwear for his masterful organisation of the great Sinister Oz Tape Exchange. I received a wonderful compilation from Miss Alex and I must say she is highly talented in the art of mix-tape making, packaging and all. Thank you! I am hoping there might be another round of this soon, perhaps extending over to New Zealand as well? Terry? Sinister: schooling's made a fool of me

Hello, Sinister- I know I don't write very often, but I have a question for you now, so I hope it's alright that I'm using this forum. So, ummm, *clears throat and shuffles* here goes: Next year I want to (am dying to) study abroad, in the UK. My school does offer a program that could send me to Oxford, but a lot of my friends are going to do that and as much as I love them all, I don't want to fly across an ocean to see the same people on campus. I want to be able to strike out on my own - find a school, find a life independently... and see them on weekends and holidays. Also, the idea of joining an exchange 'program' doesn't exactly appeal to me, as I would rather just integrate myself into the community... by myself. Yes, Oxford would be a dream (Sebastian Flyte! Charles Ryder!), but I know that a lot of you have had various experiences with a myriad of Scottish and British colleges and I was wondering if any of you have any words of wisdom. How are University of Edinburgh and University of Glasgow? My major is biology and the subjects that I love are microbiology and English, both lit and creative writing (painful juxtaposition, I know... double majoring is NOT working). As you can see, I'm rather aiming towards Scotland (no there WOULDN'T be a reason for that heh heh heh heh), but anywhere in England is still open. Sinister: I went under the covers with a torch

Long time no speak, Sinister...on my part at least. I've been scared off posting for months, deciding that nothing I could say would be of interest. I got lured away to the "other B&S list". But I've been encouraged to come out of hiding, talking to Heather and Amy. I kind of have a reason to post this time, it's only very remotely Belle and Seb related, and has to do with my new clubnight which is starting, in Macclesfield, on 26th September. It's called Dolly Mixtures and will feature indie, soul, psych, punk and miscelaneous other items from the 60s onwards. I'm really pleased I've managed to get this sorted out, if it's successful the club will have me back and it'll be a regular thing. It's at a place called 'That Bar'. It would be great to see any of you, but I doubt that will happen. It's been a summer wasted. I've spent my time reading books on the Canadian film industry and listening to people rant about Nickelback and Shania Twain and other bad things to come from the True North (Canadian pop culture dissertation...10,000 words...I haven't left Canada behind yet despite five months back home), looking out for nice boys and not really finding many (although it is, of course, the quality not the quantity thats counts), and dreaming of Toronto. I miss the bity city rush and always having something to do, or being able to find something to do on an empty day. I miss streetcars and tall shiny buildings and cheap Canadian beer. I even miss the vain mods, with their Fred Perry shirts and drainpipes, or go go boots and bum-skimming dresses. But only because wherever they go, good music is bound to follow. A friend who also went over there says we have to go back when we finish uni, and live there for a bit. It looks likely. But in the meantime I've got my 4th year to contend with, and it will be much fun. I was at the Interpol gig last month at Manchester Academy, I didn't see any of you there, though I had on my yellow B&S badge, in hope. I did see a boy who looked very like the Sergeant Pepper's era John Lennon. Franz Ferdinand were the support, their music was very funny and danceable, I'll certainly hunt their album down when it comes out. Thats enough from me. The other day I fell out of bed and flew into my chest of drawers, knocking loads of things off onto my head. When I was at work I realised there was an intruder in my shoe, snug underneath the arch of my foot. I took off my shoe (my lovely NEW shoe which came with a free SHOEHORN) and inside was a belle and sebastian button badge. A little boy with two fingers in the air. Anyway, enough of that. Here's the news: : : : : : : : Belle and Sebastian's "Fans Only" retrospective DVD compilation will be released by Jeepster Recordings in the UK/Europe on October 20th 2003, catalogue number JPRDVD001. The DVD is a record of the development of Belle & Sebastian during their time with Jeepster, from '...Sinister' to 'Storytelling'. Featuring videos, live performances, interviews, out-takes, tv appearances, early documentary footage, exclusive material and behind the scenes insights into the evolution of the band. It was compiled by Glasgow-based film maker Blair Young and the band over the last 8 months and will now only be released on DVD, and not VHS too as originally planned. Sinister: I see your "!!!" and raise you a "GUH?"

GayJay Ink Polaroided: "Laura's back. She's walking off with a boy. She seems to like him, but my Spidy Senses are activated. He had a weak handshake and that always bodes ill. And he's burly with the look of a man who's killed a wild animal in his life. I decided to keep an eye on him. But Llew Llooks happy." The last time that Jaykins went about using his free time productively by writing fictional tales of me in New York I believe I requested that he put me in a pair of "smart Manolo Blahniks." What do I get instead? A lecherous looking lad. Oh sure, truth be told, he looked as if he might kill a child if so provoked but I usually seek that out in a boy. I'm guessing that Jay was so mean in his description of a boy he once even referred to as "really cute" because aforementioned boy didn't seem to return my affections after I've had a mad crush on him for four years. I suppose I could do the same - wax on about how you think someone is all love and light and instead they turn out to be full of gravel kisses. Or say that I responded quickly with a, "Not one you'll be tasting again!" before stepping on to the F train to whisk me safely away from Brooklyn when he asked about what kind lipbalm I had on. However, none of that would be true. Perhaps it's the Woody Allen take on the old Groucho Marx joke that I just don't want to belong to any club that would have someone like me for a member which causes rejection to only make me like someone more. But I couldn't say one bad thing about him. Not about his warm brown eyes with those fantastically long lashes that only boys ever seem to have. Or the way my breath would catch just whenever I was around him. Well, once I got up the courage to be around him as the first time he looked my way in a crowded bookstore I dashed away in the other direction because he was the cutest boy I had ever seen and the thought of actually being within five feet of him made me too weak in the knees to do anything but run away. Or the fact that he was just this really quiet clever standoffish bookstore boy who seemed to watch the world just as warily as me and I had this notion that maybe we could just do what we had always done alone - only together. Of course, I might not be able to be so calm about the fact that there's this huge void in my life where four years of incredibly close friendship and crushing have been except for a foxy girl with her hair in a cute bob who was working her specs appeal at the Dorothy Parker festival who held my hand after seeing me so sad. (Mmm, girls with glasses = yum.) By the time, we ended up in her bed with her pulling me in the rejection pains seemed very far away. Yes, that might have speeded up the process indeed. Just as her quite large boyfriend who was - for some reason - quite angry with me expedited my departure from New York that next morning. But I'm still heartbroken. Really, I am. In Belle & Sebastian related and very delayed Prospect Show reporting back news, I'm saddened that something rare and fantastic like Lord Anthony wasn't played at the Prospect Park show. Of course, I've come to realize that I won't be fully happy until I hear them play the exact same set they played at the Bowlie. (I think "Slow Graffitti" is the most ideal opening song.) And, well, have it played in my bedroom. However, at the NY show Stuart did watch his mouth at the end of The Boy With The Arab Strap. He skipped the part about "wanking" because there were children around. Sure those Californians got rare ear candy but I got a glimpse of Stuart's soft side. Hmm, what else? Oh, I went to find the Sinister picnic, only to give up after seeing no one twee enough. Instead, I wandered around Prospect Park aimlessly while listening to wafts of B&S songs drift through as they did their soundcheck. I decided to get in line early so I could get a good spot on the hill when lo & behold the sinister picnic came to me. Only, it wasn't a sinister picnic. It was Bowlie Kids (except for Aruni who is on both. However, I was the only sole sole sinisterine there) who were snotty about the sinister list. I stared at my shoes a lot. Thus, I'm still quite perplexed about why everyone is always so excited about these sinister picnics, even if my favorite sinisterine did happen to be there. Later, I was joined by two other of my most beloved Sinisterines as I got to see the show with GayJay & Eric. It wasn't the best performed show I've ever been to but it was definitely the one I've enjoyed the most - as it was just lovely to listen to one of my beloved groups while sitting on the grass eyeing a foxylicious gayboy (who brought bubbles to the show!) out of the corner of my eye while sitting under the trees. Plus, afterwards I met up with my favorite person in the entire world whose birthday was that day so I was completely charmed that I got to spend at least a few minutes with him. Jay was right about one thing in his ink polaroid - I was happy. (At least, until my heart was ripped out and STOMPED STOMPED STOMPED a few days later.) pretty in pink, Ll ps - I adore the new album's new cover. Sinister: Aah! Protest cardies waster

Dear Sinister, Apologies for the dire anagram in the subject line. Not the best way to introduce ourselves to you in our first post, but there you go. Our second favourite was What drastic arse operates?, so it could have been worse! Just to clarify here, we are two people writing one post, not one person with some sort of multiple personality disorder. Amy has liked Belle & Sebastian for about 4 years now since she heard the Bowlie Weekender set on the radio and fell in love with Stuarts voice. Since then, shes been to see them twice, most interestingly last year when she met them at John Peels Christmas party. Thats another story really, but needless to say, her most treasured possession is a photograph of her being hugged by Stevie. She can never decide which of their songs she likes best, but shes pleased to see that Lord Anthony is included on the new album. She likes the sound of a song called Wrapped up in books too, but shes trying not to get her hopes up. After all, a song called Beyond the sunrise sounds fairly innocuous until you actually hear it. Shes lurked on and off this list for most of the past 4 years, but has never felt she really had anything to say to 1400 complete strangers that merited posting. In fact, she would have probably never posted at all if Heather hadnt persuaded her to. Heather was introduced to Belle & Sebastian about two years ago by Amy, while in quiet desperation in the back of a bus en route to a seminar on mechanical engineering that neither of them wanted to go to (just in case you were starting to worry, neither of us are mechanical engineers, we were just misguidedly doing A level physics). She loves them because she can relate to their songs (unlike so much music thats about). She loves the list because there are so many other people who obviously feel the same way. We decided to introduce ourselves to you jointly because we found the prospect a little daunting. So here we are, shyly saying hello, holding hands in the corner (its not 1995, but rest assured we are just friends). Our motives for posting to the list are twofold. Firstly, we currently abide in Sheffield, which is apparently seeing less picnicking activity than the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. We were wondering if there were any sinisterines or sinisterettes in the vicinity who would be interested in some sort of picnic-based meet up. We would happily provide buns (dont smirk you besmutterers of the list) and other suitable refreshments, plus, of course, our own delightful company. Secondly, at the end of this month we are both relocating to Edinburgh and were wondering if there was anyone who could advise us as to where a sinister person might go out of an evening to hear some B & S tracks being played. We did search the archives on this subject, but the most recent debate on the issue seemed to be about 5 years old and we feel that it might not be the most up to date information available to us. If anyone can help with our query or wants to express their interest in a picnic, please contact us off list.
