Hullo folks, Well, it seems that Sinister has RISEN FROM THE D!E!A!D! like something, well, sinister. All these old faces remind me of the Sinister back in 1986, when I was still in short trousers and Sinister posts were delivered by folding them into paper aeroplanes and throwing them from the tallest building in town. In Kidderminster that meant climbing up to the fourth storey of the Art College. Some of the locals said that if you went up that high your brain would pop, so they would stand at the bottom with umbrellas over their heads just in case. It never did, though. Chris "Show me the Beaker" Leonard said, "My name is Chris Leonard". He also said, "'Mad' Mick did write "Love on the March" from the forthcoming single. All of it. And very nice it is too. You see? Talent." To be honest, "Love on the March" scared me when I heard it on the radio. But then, at the time the radio was getting a lot of interference from the Archers on Radio Four, and the constant sound of cows and donkeys was enough to drive anyone to bonkers. On the other hand, I *love* Desperation Made a Fool of Me, like a loveable biscuit baby that you just want to squeeze and squeeze and squeeze and.. oh dear, biscuit baby, what have I done??! I wonder what the *second* single from the album will be. I'd like it to be I'm a Cuckoo or Lord Anthony, or, even better, Stay Loose! That would be ace! With (My Girl's Got) Miraculous Technique as a b-side! And a cover made out of chocolate!! Dr C B Stride said, "<color><param>0100,0100,0100". Well, indeed. Genevieve said "I love the goldenness of September". So do I. I love its chilliness, too, and the hedgehogs that appear after a summer hibernating in their trees. Also, I love September because it makes me want to make SOUP!! In fact, I am making some soup right now to keep me warm till the morning. Do you want to know how to make soup? Here is HOW: ingredients =========== Salt and pepper 75g butter 2 large carrots, diced 2 large parsnips, diced 1 onion, diced 600ml vegetable stock 1/2 teaspoon of fresh thyme Put the butter and carrots and parsnips and onion in a pan and cook for 7 minutes. Add the vegetable stock and cook for 10-20 minutes, until the vegetables are soft. Blend vegetables until smooth. Serve HOT. :) ============ I know what you're thinking: "I'd like to make some soup, but I just don't have the thyme." Well, neither did I, so I just used some basil. I don't think it matters. It's all just leaves. If I didn't have that I'd have used bits of cactus, or rubbings from the grassy underbelly of a sheep. Hey, improvise! Making soup is fun!! Sinister: when you're 21 you're no fun

A ChristoperLeonard post! That makes my heart feel happy. There have been some good posts. I want more travel narratives from The Pinefox though. I have a new kitten fresh from the barn! Despite being straight out of one of those "Hang in there!" posters he's not twee. His momma killed a weasel! I don't know what to name him though. So Belle and Sebastian have a new album coming out. There is something about discovering a band at a certain age, when the band themselves are beginning, and following them throughout that makes you loyal. I have not experienced this with other bands. I like this quotation: "Time is the enemy of all lovers. Obsession has a life of its own: the object, however irreplaceable and particular it seems, can change, though it is in the nature of obsession not to recognize that." Of course, all these glowing reviews are great. It seems like it has been a while since there has been this kind of anticipation for a new album, so now I am looking forward to it even more. I like the photo on the amazon site that someone posted but I don't think this is the photo they have decided? I would like to think that Struan has empathy for waitresses. Ugh, scrambled eggs on your tights, in your hair and sore feet. I only lasted two months. I love the goldenness of September. That nice start to the year when notebooks are still tidy and you haven't been swallowed up by your own procrastinating. I was thinking of YOU in late August. As the Duke reminded me: (look in the archives if you¹re a youngster, or in the deepest recesses of your memories if you¹re a Sinister Original¹ for which read old git¹). A good thing about Sinister, it is strange...the people I have known in school, all those proms etc and those couples have broken up. On this list it is the opposite. There are more marriages or am I just exaggerating? It is a strange thing to see the two separate voices on the internet, and then... It only makes me a tiny tiny bit bittersweet, more to do with the inevitable passing of time, (or maybe the feeling of being passed by). I can't help but measure myself not by Jan 1sts but by summers. This will be my second time studying "Leda and The Swan" being on Sinister. I am in this lovely poetry class this year where we are supposed to bake and bring in treats. I am dying to share "My Beloved Compares Herself to a Pint of Stout" trademark Sinister/poetryplace2. This reminds me, did someone kill the parrot? He was flying around for a while there, but sort of disappeared. It's funny you know, we were out at this little club and they actually played Me and The Major. It was no Winchester but there was a girl in a pleated skirt, knee socks and heavy glasses dancing like crazy and mouthing the words. Not a big deal but in a dreary little government town it's all still a bit exotic. And it just seemed a nice little moment with the anticipation of new album and tour. Ree wrote: belle & sebastian in dee-troit Again?! i imagine the kids will pull together an after-party again or something, but if anyone wants to do anything else, you know, i'll organize. I will be going to the Toronto show but I am not sure about Detroit. I don't know if I will have transportation to get across the border. Are there any on here that will be going to both? In 2002 it was a whirlwind trip of 4 cities! That Detroit after party was a nice taste of glamour. Even if I just leaned against the wall, perma-flustered. Hey! Dancing Twins, where are you? Is Ken returning? He can attempt to dance-lure Belfast Bob again. I am supposed to be reading The Faerie Queene so I suppose I should get back to that. There's not many faeries at all now is there? Too bad they decided to pull "Travellin' Light" from the new LP... hopefully it'll show up as a b-side, i really liked it when they played it live. And i wonder if they'll ever dust off the 4 excellent tunes from their June 2001 Peel Session. In my opinion, "My Girl's Got Miraculous Technique" is one of the top 10 B&S songs ever... it's such a twee reminder of the Sinister-era sound. Could've been a single during that long dry spell. Maybe it'll see the light of day sometime? Mehopes so. I used to write silly stories about glasgow indie people and send them to this list, which was all well and good until I got a public telling off from st*ph*n p*st*el , which I can tell you put me right off that man. It was quite upsetting at the time, but now that I'm older and wiser I can happily tell you that I don't give a fuck. Did you know that he's a very keen ping pong player? And the new album has the sound of a ping pong ball on it. Perhaps it's st*ph*n "ping pong" p*st*el's ping pong ball. Eh? You think? I have to say that I am very taken with the new album. Christ it's great. I love it all. However Robin "king of clubs" Stout is truly right to call Stuart Lee M "accent traitor" (stay loose is funny "I woz playin' the jo-anna", "rabbit,rabbit,rabbit,rabbit" etc). Have I made myself clear? Those of you that know miss julia and I from the past may be interested to know that miss julia is now ms julia. We got married earlier on this year, you see. Madeleine Minx, you have Missed The Point. My call for oldsters to return did NOT involve them coming here, w(h)etting our appetites and then dumping us! God, woman, nothing changes 'round these parts - Sinister is still whatever you want it to be (and can shoot ping pong balls out of its fanny for a small charge). Please don't go. But massive props to muh homies Ree, Jay and Brier. I know Jay has barely been away, but he deserves propping (or propping up, on occasion) regardless. I am ever so slightly aware that I may seem a hypocrite by doing this (see previous Stine-disapproved email for details), but there are lots and lots of truly wonderful people who have given lots to making this list what it is, and the combination of them with the marvellous posts of newer listees just might make Sinister THE place to be once again. Sinister: Just give me an easy life, and a peaceful death

Dear Sinister, I'm afraid the time has come for me to say goodbye and unsubscribe. It's not you, it's me. And all that. See, since finishing university and starting my new job (which is less a job and more a something else - a 'profession', perhaps? - in that it makes me grumpy and tired and unable to concentrate), my opportunity to be online has all but vanished. So, now, when I check my email about once a week, I have a godzillion emails to go through, and I feel permanently out of the loop. I haven't been in #sinister for ages either, something that I'm sad about, but feel unable to actually do anything about. But, Sinister has meant the world to me. Meeting people, sharing stories and misery around the globe, shameless slagging of bands, people, books..... I got the chance to meet people who were as similar and as different to me as to make them perfect, and drink copious amounts and dance to Kim Wilde and all those things that make life all shiny and new. I'm not quite sure which bits to pick out as the best, so I shan't pick out any. And I may resubscribe anyway, when I'm a little more organised on the work - life balance. Whatever the fuck that is. Sinister is a very special phenomenon. Many thanks to Honey and Linda, who I will continue to bother with text messages and pukingly-cute Christmas cards. I feel a bit foolish and overly wordsome, so I shall depart. Sinister: The Death of KNOW YOR HIPSTERS!

So Sinister: Did you ever have the carpet pulled out from under you? I had this lovely post all about KNOW YOUR HIPSTERS about the evolution of Emo Kids to full blown Hipsters, but then I saw this hysterical wee book called The Hipster Handbook. Eff da! I hate it when my thunder is stolen. In other Lil Emo Kid News, there has been more Stalkage. Turns out his name is Brian. He is an undergraduate at Duke University. He is half Japanese. He used to work at my radio station and my friend the ever Poppy Alicia is aware of him. I learned this at a local Label (Pox World Empire) Expo show. Oh, it was gand! Hipster as far as the eye could see! I got a free CD AND a free tshirt. Not to mention the fine music. I've been busy for a poor boy. Cheesybun Eric was here for over a week! We had fun! We went to shows and parties and rented films! I made him into quite a little Chapel Hill Scenster for a bit. It was generally quite swell. In other musical news: NEW CAMERA OBSCURA! Or so I hear. I have to wait til January. Unless someone sneds me a copy to play on the radio. People. Amusingly, the US distribution folk, Merge Records -- home of the beloved Essex Green and Matt Suggs and the Rosebuds and Magnetic Fields and did I say the Essex Green? -- is based right here in Durham. For her birthday, I gave their Publicist and new-born CO fan a copy of Biggest Bluest Hi Fi. Needless to say she adored it. NEW BELLE AND SEBASTIAN. Why at this very moment I am listening to a promo copy. It's as swell as a Swell Thing Can Be. It hasn't played Roy Walker yet, but I hope Stu was sober enough to get it right in the studios. As opposed to Brooklyn. Wee drink after, my ass. Befo' yo! I have mentioned the Essex Green. Their new album is The Long Goodbye. I recommend it to you all. Even if I missed some of their recent show to buy Condoms (a first for me). And no, smutty minded folk like Ian, not for me as in for my use. Heavens no: my virtue would never allow it. They were for a perfectly lovely straight girl. Discuss that, yo. (I may be forming a New Pop Sensation with this girl. Would you buy our album? We're pretty and poppy and are sure to make good music!) Speaking of shows: new US B&S tour dates! In Durham! Yo! What are we collectively doing for that?
