on the subject of sad stuff.
i think the saddest thing i ever saw was a section of the John Lennon
documentary 'Imagine.'
John hears that there's some chap's been camping out on his lawn for a
couple of days (he's living in a mansion/stately home type rich person's
abode so he hasn't noticed the guy on the grounds or anything). so John
gets
someone to call the boy up to the house. The next thing you see is the boy
standing outside the house with John talking to him...giving out to him
really. John is trying to explain that there's nothing godly or even
interesting about himself...he's just a man...those songs he wrote are just
words, they weren't written for the boy - they were
written only with John, or maybe even Yoko in mind.
The little camper just looks slightly stunned, and very bedraggled from
sleeping rough in his idol's garden...he's also trying not to cry
next scene, john and yoko and the boy are sitting around a table eating
lunch...the boy is obviously starving cos he's eating really ravenously
with his hands and the other two are just looking at him...John keeps
repeating what he's said...he's being pretty harsh but i guess it's a real
pain for him to have people following him all the time(see Mark Chapman for
details)...the sad thing is the look on the boy's face.
it's a mixture of feeling stunned and euphoric to be inside John Lennon's
house,
actually in the company of the person who he's loved for years and years
and who's company he probably always imagined being in, and then sadness
because he's realising that the dream he had was exactly that and his whole
world is collapsing...he's still fighting back the tears...makes me cry
every time...
but then again i have a very bad record for crying at films...see "The Land
Before Time" for details...bear in mind that my mum used to turn on
"Lassie" when visitors came round so that they could laugh at me
crying...that show killed me every time...it got to the point where i
started crying at the sound of the opening notes cos i just
kept remembering all the times when Lassie nearly died...or saved that poor
deaf child from a burning treehouse etc....
of course now i've grown into a hardened cynical old hag and these things
don't effect me at all anymore...no really...sob.

i couldn't agree more with what mr nick says about jon & bethey. i went
to your website yesterday and i'm still reeling from how lovely you both
are. if wee-ness is the key, i want to be mike tv.
sad songs (is by e john!) - every time i hear the first tap of the
taambourine in *you made me forget my dreams* a tear wells in my eye,
but they recently spilled over listening to *tracy* by mogwai. i was on
the train home to edinburgh from london and i was listening to it as i
crossed the border and it was the first spring dusk i had noticed. it
all seemed to overcome me.
i always cry at the fiddler on the roof, film&music but that might be
because my dad always cried at it, and he never cried. i recently
started to bubble telling some stangers about the end of manon des
scource. and just the thought of dr zhivago floods me.
the un-asked b&s q? where did they record the children at the start of
iyfs, and who is the wee boy shouting *c'moan* that i could listen to on
a loop for eternity?
the list has become worth escaping to again. huzzah.

I was thinking that I can instantly think of sad songs and songs that
make me cry but then I thought what about the other end of the
spectrum....
Sad songs say so much and all that but what with Summer Time now upon us
(even if it isn't Summertime yet) and the picnic season fast approaching
(Yippeeee!!!) I'd like to mention that sometimes music can (whisper
it!!) make you impossibly happy. Some songs make me grin from start to
finish and revel in every second of their duration. These tend to be
Disco classics and above all "Disco Inferno". There's such an epic
majesty to that song but for one purpose and one purpose only - to get
people moving on the dancefloor. Its intentions are clear and its
methods are ruthless; strings, percussion, trumpets, cymbals and guitars
dedicated to making you forget anything that was wrong, accentuating the
positive and eliminating the negative. If I had had any part in the
recording or production of that song I would consider my life well lived
and every time I hear it start a smile spreads across my lips. Who needs
drugs when you've got Disco!!!
A lot of the songs I love say nothing to me about my life. And I think
"Thank God for that" - if every song I heard said "You are a balding
computer programmer who'll never find a girlfriend" life would be a
right pickle.
xx

hi pop tarts
i've got a sad story to tell.
well, actually it's a happy story with a sad ending.
here goes... (this is the happy bit)
i just got some photos developed and there's this one of me at an
in-store record signing (Gaslight records, Bourke Street, Melbourne)
with the wondrous Stereolab.
The next night i saw them play and it was a tremendously joyous
occasion.
This is all very happy (the sad bit's coming up).
Y'see living in Australia, the chance of seeing a nice band is akin to
one of those religious sitings (you know when some farmer from naples
sees the image of jesus in his pumpkin patch) ie. it's (a) very rare
and (b) treated by devotees like a gift from god.
In any case me and my friends get extremely excited when anybody comes
to play for us. yo la tengo were also here last month which set all our
hearts aflutter.
nevertheless, it's tres sad for us pop kids whose favourite bands can't
afford to travel all the way across the ocean to play with us.
anyway the point is i love b&s and loads of other lovely bands (too
numerous to mention) heaps and heaps and it makes me sad to hear you
talking about them with such familiarity. (but don't stop, it brightens
my day to read b&s tales).
there's only one record shop in the whole city which even stocks b&s
records and you have to buy them on import (approx. $35 for a record,
$15 for a 7 inch).
do you all feel sorry for me yet and love me more for my isolation?
hope so.
a-oh! (we just got teletubbies - although absolutely no one has heard
of it)
jane.
hmm - would cliff send this? better ask my mum, she used to be in the
cliff richard fan club when she was 15.

Well, yes I did do the sleaze quiz, and did manage to beat Keith by a whopping 6
points. But I didn't do it by having anal sex, I'd just like to point that out
now.
So, it was a fun quiz, but not exactly Belle and Sebastian related, and so, with
my warped litle mind , I've come up with the following:
How BelleandSebastian sleazy are you?
This is for adults only, any kids on the list please leave the room now.
1) Have you ever fantasised about 'doing it' with any members of Belle and
Sebastian?
One point for each member, two points if they're the same sex as you, and a
bonus 5 points if you've fantasised about more than one of them at the same
time.
2) Have you actually indulged in self-gratification whilst fantasising about a
member of BelleandSebastian?
Two points for each member, double for same sex, ten points for Richard or
Sarah. Bonus five if they are still playing their instruments.
3) Have you ever fantasised about doing it with another list member?
One point for each one, bonus 5 points if you've fantasised about more than one
of them at the same time, and a whopping ten point bonus if it was Northy or
Begbie.
4) Do you genuinely believe that Stuart Murdoch is gay?
One point. Bonus 5 points if you'd LIKE him to be gay because it turns you on.
5) Are you gay?
One point.
6) Have you ever indulged in self-gratification whilst listening to Belle and
Sebastian records?
One point for each song listened to, bonus ten points if it was 'Me and the
Major'.
7) Have you ever had an erotic dream about a member of Belle and Sebastian?
5 points for each member. Bonus 5 points for Richard or Stevie.
8) Have you ever had sex whilst listening to Belleand Sebastian?
Five points for each time, Ten points for 'Me andtheMajor' and Twenty if it was
up the arse.
9) Have you ever met any of BelleandSebastian?
Two points for each one, five if it was Isobel or Stuart M, ten if physical body
contact took place, twenty if you touched Stuart M's gearstick or saw him in
shorts.
10) Have you ever 'got off' with a list member?
Five points, double if Northy or Begbie, ten points for actual penetrative sex.
Fifty if it was up the arse. And you can double that if it was Tag.
11) Have you ever got off with a member of BelleandSebastian?
Ten points, fifty for sex, and disqualification if it was up the arse cos you're
a liar.
12) Have you ever sent porn to any member of Belleand Sebastian?
One thousand points.
Finally, give yourself a Bonus 50 points each time foxes are involved.
susannah.

Oh, yeah, the results:
<5 you're probably under 16 and I told you not to read it.
6-20 Could do better, you want to listen to 'Seeing other People' a bit
more often.
20-50 You're pretty sleazy, a couple more erotic dreams and you'll be doing OK
50-1000 Keith, tag, paul, I expect you to be in this bracket
1000+ Is your name Stuart david?

okay.
haven't written in for a couple of days cause i have now joined the
ranks of a lot of you on this list. i got a new job where i sit in front
of a fucking computer all day. i'm an operator. as in telephone
operator. i'm the 411 guy.
unlike others, i don't mind all the off topic crap that gets posted to
this list, but there does seem to be a hell of a lot more of it lately.
did we have a bunch of new subscribers lately, paul? or is there nothing
good on the tube?
and for those of you who put down good will hunting....i think one of
you called it trite.....i won't even go the way of saying "well, in my
opinion" and all that....i'm just gonna say "you're wrong". it is a very
good movie. and i'm a sucker for minnie driver. and while i was watching
the oscars, my eyes teared up when robin williams won supporting actor,
and i don't even like robin williams. and i would never fork out money
for a movie that cost 200 million to make (titanic) cause that says
you're just gonna get a bunch of special effects and a love story that
i'm sure has been told before. and elliot smith is my new hero lately. i
just recently got his first album and i've had the others for a while.
but someone, hell, i can't remember who, remarked to me the similarity
between him and ol' nick drake and i have to agree. so any movie that
puts seven or eight elliot smith songs in it is a ok in my books.
in summary,
1. new job
2. an influx of off topic crap
3. good will hunting is marvelous
4. i haven't seen it, but titanic is crap
5. elliot smith is neat-o

greetings people
my my the list is active at the moment...
i've just waded my way through about 100 e-mails from you lot, so i've
decided to inflict my selection of tear-inducing ballads upon you.
mazzy star - fade into you (again!)
b&s - boy done wrong again, you made me forget my dreams
madder rose - while away, swim
primal scream - you're just dead skin to me ..*sob*
galaxie 500 - spook
mojave 3 - love songs on the radio, you're beautiful, etc...
boo radleys - lazarus, spaniard
slowdive - shine, altogether
telescopes - you set my soul (my shoegazing days are haunting me again)
trembling blue stars - i'm tired, i've tried
i'm sure there are more - none come to mind at the moment though
i think almost all of my favourite songs are sad - i don't know why, but i
can't get as much out of a happy, uplifting song as i can out of a
heart-rendingly sad, beautiful one - i'm not sure what that says about me -
maybe i should get out more - but never mind.
love to all
rob

in a really very lovely post Rod wrote:
<<It matters not how good a piece of music is. It is what is reminds
you off that makes you like it.>>
...which has, for better or worse, given me the cojones to write that
one song which makes me go all tight in the chest and misty eyed is
"being Boring" by Pet Shop Boys.
I'm not even a big fan, it's just, when i hear this, I get The Lowest
Saddest Feeling... Ever in my heart. Then seeing the video didn't
help... ironically, all these young beautiful people happy and in love,
upset me even more!
> >most people get completely wrong impressions about what people are
going to look like before they see their picture/meet them.
So, has anybody ever been pleasantly surprised in this regard? do
tell... I'm curious
I met this girl who I chatted with on AOL, and the weirdest bit was that
not only did we look so much alike, but we were dressed the same way,
same hair - everything! and it's odd because I thought, she's so
pretty!! but when I look at myself I think, oh nothing special...
looking forward to the Spice show review...
