me and my friend bought leather jackets at the same time last summer so
we spent a good few weeks singing that chills' song. great init?
isn't john jackson's address nice?
i see it as a faded turquoise (the 60's one), slightly weathered beach
hut at the foot of some green cliffs where puffins live. he's sitting
in the doorway on an old milking stool. the beach isn't of sand, but
brown and cream pebbles. it's high tide and the waves are medium and
occasional, and they rearrange the stones with a bit of a rumble. it
isn't really sunny, more hazy with brightness all around with no shadows
and there is no horizon 'cos the sea and sky are the same. it's very
quiet, the puffins are in their burrows, and although john loves belle &
sebastian, at the moment there's music coming from the back of the hut
where there's a wee transistor quietly playing lou reed's *berlin*. in
fact, i think he's lipsyncing the word *dubonnet* right now.
am i taking ink polaroids of strangers from my roving satellite? i'm
not trying to steal anybodys soul.
isn't it great that jon & betheys' protestations just inflame our love
for them.
my satellite's moving. who next?

The Chills are always good for inducing a tear or two, especially the
_Submarine Bells_ album (one of the best of the '90s if you ask me) and
the single "The Great Escape." There's an absolutely stunning moment in
it: Martin Phillipps has just finished singing about committing suicide,
or moving, or in any event leaving a bad situation. He ends up singing
"No one can hear me...No one can hear me...no one...no one..." One
final soaring guitar line, then a few seconds of silence, and then
suddenly *applause* -- understated, as if the crowd is in shock. What
sounded like private thoughts turned out to be a live performance. I
don't know why, but this moment literally made me misty-eyed (without
fail) the first several times I heard it.
I find myself frequently getting choked up in moments of hesitation or
gaps of silence. The bit in "Stars of Track & Field" before the trumpet
part never fails to get me, for instance...
Then there's always American Music Club's middle period, which contains
some of the very saddest, most beautiful songs ever written. How many
listmembers love "Everclear?"

People wanted to know what happened in London, so I guess I'll do a
little run down. Let me stress however first that this is NOT an ink
polaroid - ink polaroids are for people who pick flowers, listen to
the smiths and cry at the sun going down... probably.
Arrived in London at about 8:30, had to skive off work early so's we
could get into London before the offy shut, so we got some cans and
had a quiet time in my mate's brother's flat. Which incidentally is in
Lambeth - in fact on "Lambeth Walk" which the kids around there do.
Looks like that street's 15 minutes of fame passed quite some time ago.
Next day we went into the town and wandered around buying CD's and
stuff, drinking tea as you do, generally chilling out. Later on
though, we all met up in Stephen's Poetry Cafe - where Mr.Trousers
rules the roost, lays down the law. He's the head honcho, the top dog,
the big cheese, numero uno. Had a couple of beers and popped round the
corner for a nice Italian, Susannah and her flatmate Emma turn up.
Emma called Tag "Tagnuts" lots. Which I don't think impressed Tag
much. Also we get to meet Trousers friend Erlend - or is it Dennis
Pennis... who we're joking about, until later he gets up and goes
"Right, I'm off to see the Warm Jets and I'm going to pretend I'm
Dennis Pennis to get in on the guest list" which was well funny. Later
on we just pile back off to the Poetry cafe and drink more bouze.
The next day we meet up at the same place and then go for a curry.
We all had a nice curry, and one of them was especially salty. Tag ran
off just before the meal and brought back Kelly, which I thought was a
neat trick, was lovely to meet you Kelly.
Later on we pile off to "Where it's at" which is a club, that plays
a weird mix of those curazeee indie guitar backs, and occassionally
something that ROCKS. That's not Pop. It's ROCK, like Motorhead and
Aerosmith. They were really good, even if they didn't fit into my pop
world. We tried to get the bloke to play Belle and Sebastian, he did
have them, but he wouldn't play it, he wanted to ROCK, and who could
blame him... well I bet there's a few on the list who would actually.
What Tag didn't mention about the bloke whom I asked if he "ruled",
was that he actually tried to explain to me that he didn't "rule" and
why he didn't "rule", he said it was because it was the first time
he'd been there - so I explained to him that he probably did "rule"
cause it was my first time there and I "ruled".
Susannah has a great drunken idea at this point to go to Heathrow
with David and Katrina, so we all pile off onto the bus, but we only
get as far as Hammersmith, by this point we've decided that the idea
is shit - so off we go to David and Katrina's flat happily singing
songs by Sally Oldfield. There's a beautiful view of London from their
flat... I almost discovered my sensitive side there. But I didn't
actually discover it, because I don't have one.
The last night I spent having a meal with Susannah, her flatmate and
her flatmate's sister to celebrate Susannah's birthday which was
really nice. Unfortunately we completely took the piss out of the shit
artwork in the place and later discovered that the barman did it.
Oops, never mind. Both the bar staff and the taxi driver were treated
to loud drunken renditions of a Century of Fakers - which I think they
liked...
The next morning Susannah and I did the sleaze quiz, which Susannah
beat me by 6 points. I got 101, but I'm not saying what Susannah got
cause I don't think she'd like people to know.
And that was pretty much it. Sorry that mail wasn't funny enough.
Tag sneaked in early and poached all the funny bits - even before I'd
got home! Cheeky Bastard!
Love Keith.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the trip, and special thanks to
Susannah for "having" me.

THE saddest song has to got to be that new remixed version of the Celion
Dion - Titanic song - that adds dialogue from the movie into it........on a
more serious note here are some of my picks:
The Smiths - asleep
The Chills - pink frost
House of Love - lonliness is a gun
Dinosaur Jr - severed lips
Sebadoh - brand new love
Nick Drake - Parasite
Galaxie 500 - when will you come home
Ben Folds Five - Brick

i remember that one. it was called 'Little Girl (with blue eyes)' and some
of it was quite rude, i think. In a Pulp song? Never... It was of their
first album, 'It', and they did it on the white room a few years ago too.
God, i'm a mind of useless information...
i bought the new Pulp album today and its very classy. i also got a lovely
Calvin & Hobbes t-shirt too. I know yous all aren't interested in my
purchases, but i mention this only because Sarah likes C&H too. Yay! A guy
at my school likes them too, and he was being daft and going on about him
starting a new religion which would have the same sort of rules as
Calvinball (you'll only know these if you've read the comic strips) He was
going to call this religion (yes, you guessed it), Calvinism. And he wasn't
trying to be funny or anything. Just dim. So i pointed out the obvious and
know its called Hobbesism (which looks v. strange when written). Just
thought you should know.

Well, Katrina seems quite efficient, so she'd have short hair, for a start.
I don't know what else.
It doesn't always work out that well. For me, people called Keith always
have moustaches. Do you?
Katrina - were you wearing a dress - it might have been purple. Anyway,
bethey didn't think it was Jo. And don't worry if you didn't say hello -
you can next time (I'm really excited that everyone is going to know who we
are - unless loads of kids get into B&S, of course).
This email is going to be a nightmare to send - the spellchecker always
wants to change Katrina to Quatrain for some funny reason.

She was the one I was talking about when I said that you were too important
to have two Katrinas. Her name could be Lulu or Katie or something of that
nature. I haven't heard from her in ages, actually. Katie-dear, if you're
there, drop me a line!
I don't think Rod's idea of having Sp~c# G$rl names would really work
(you'll notice I didn't swear like Rod did). It would be depressing to be
reminded of the real world with that lot in.
I'm also quite touched with this:

I'm working on a brand new site at the moment - like the old one, only
different, if you know what I mean. You should be excited.
The 'Under Construction' page for Jeepster is also fab. I can't remember
where it is, but there is a really fabulous image summing up Jeepster at the
start. I don't know if anyone will understand that one.
bethey might post later - when she's finished her homework!
I'm revising at the moment you see - nothing proper to do.

No, no, no....the plasticine raisin animated thing was, though (can't
remember what it was called just now). I was very scared of that when i was
wee. still don't like raisins. they're all icky and must be sad cos they
used to be grapes but now they're all shriveled up and embarrased...
I was in glasgow the other day and i saw a boy walking along Byres road
wearing a B&S. i should have spoken to him. i've never seen embdy else with
a B&S t-shirt on, dunno why, seen as some have been selling in Fopp in
Edinburgh for a while now. I went into Echo with it's wall-to-wall
ceiling-to-floor cds with my friend Kenneth and he just went "Wow! Wow!
Wow! Please can we stay here for everandeverandeverandeverandever...lets
built a house under the counter and never ever leave!" (and he doesn't even
have a cd player, anyway...) Boys, eh?
Oh, and Rod; All Saints are better than the Spice Girls. Especially the
Blattgirl. Yum. Looks quite similar to girl on a Channel 5 soap, though.
I've already done (some) of my sad songs, so my favourite
jump-up-and-down-and-be-sick ones at the moment are; 'Velocity Girl' by
Primal Scream (it IS me, 'cept for the spike bit); anything by Kenickie,
coz they're sooo ace; 'Glostarz' by Urusei Yatsura; and lots and lots of
other spangly tunes, though i still always prefer the sad ones.
Film Quote of the day; "if i ever start refering to these as the best days
of my life, remind me to kill myself" This is in my school yearbook
profile, where it also says i am "intense and glittery". Hmmmmm.
love and spangles,
Debbie xxx.

Hello,
I thought of another one, 'Dagger' by Slowdive
Also, is anyone going to see the Pastels on their smash US spring tour.
They'll be at Bottom of the Hill in SF on April 7, if anyone's
interested.
Take care,

After much prodding (ouch !) by Monsieur Stephane Buron, here is my very
first posting (hope it doesn't hurt as much as the postings some boys got
at school - that tree they planted in the playground was a source of great
fear to all of us under-sevens, I can tell you...), but having lurked in
silence on the list for 6 months or so, it's probably time for an
excursion. Anyway, I come to bring you news (of sorts) about a TV
programme that was broadcast in France last Friday, called "Tracks" on the
Franco-German channel "Arte". It was only short, but as it was the only
B&S thing I've ever seen on TV, so I'll give you all a blow-by-blow account
- you can always make a cup of tea if you get bored...
So, on our TV screens appear the words "Century of Fakers", and then in the
next frame "A story by Belle and Sebastian". Someone I didn't recognise,
with a beard and wearing an apron, was then seen sitting by a canal smoking
a cigarette. It then cut to Isobel, doing sign language to the words of
the song, which were also subtitled on the bottom of the screen (they
turned yellow as they were sung, which was a nice touch). Back to the
bloke with the beard, who is opening the metal shutters outside a shop, to
reveal Isobel sitting in the shop window reading a magazine. She has
sprouted angels' wings, which must be most inconvenient when getting on and
off of the bus. Bearded bloke puts a sign outside the shop/cafe/whatever,
which says "Java events". Bearded bloke returns to shop or whatever,
staggering with a big cardboard box and trying to light a cigarette at the
same time (which, as anyone who has ever tried lighting a cigarette whilst
carrying a big cardboard box will know, is rather tricky). We then see the
band outside the "Halt Bar", and the gentleman with the aforementioned
facial hair reappears carrying a guitar case, and goes into the bar. He is
later seen cleaning the windows of the shop/cafe/thingy. Isobel is seen
kneeling in the grass, surrounded by lots of flowers, reading again, and
the video ends.
Interspersed into this cinematographic oeuvre are bits of interviews held
in the Halt bar with Chris Geddes and Mick Cooke (unless I'm wrong, in
which case it was someone else), and introductory bits from the presenter.
Because the bits said by the band were dubbed into French, I've had to
translate most of it back, so it won't be exactly what was said, but hey,
you get the picture...
Presenter: B&S took their name from the famous TV programme of the same
name, which incidentally none of the band has ever seen. Only 2 of them
deign to appear before the cameras, and their concerts are as frequent as
solar eclipses.
Chris (probably): We rarely travel out of Glasgow, it's quite a strange
place. There are loads of good bands that come from here, but Glaswegians
aren't the type of people to worship a group, even if they appreciate
them...... I don't really know how to describe the Glasgow music scene,
there are loads of groups, but the main thing is maybe our way of working,
we're a long way from the big centres of the music industry....
Presenter: Their first album, Tigermilk, sold like hot muffins, and today
Americans queue around the block to see them, but the group have kept a
cool head.
Chris (?): I share a flat with Stuart at Church Hall. Musicians often come
by to practice; it's good, there are people around all of the time...
Presenter: If you go to Glasgow, it's at the Halt bar that you are most
likely to see B&S - we tried, and it worked!
Chris (?): We were students at Stow College and our first album came out on
the college's label "Electric Honey" records. We took them a tape and they
liked it. As part of the music management course, they release a record
every year, which acts as practical experience for the students - the
production of the record makes up part of the course...
The whole thing lasted about 2 minutes, but it made by week anyway....
Maybe I'll post again before the next 6 months are out (just to keep
Stephane happy), or maybe that was too boring and I'll be sent to the
cyber-hell for train spottersÂ….
