I'm sure the old hippy Honey will be able to correct me if I'm
wrong, but Don't Look Back was the film of the tour which included
Dylan's visit to Newcastle and his introduction to an eccentric elderly
councillor, then sheriff of the city. her name was theresa russell and
she was clearly off her head, which was why they found it amusing to
include so much footing of her.
incredibly, she is still a city councillor in her nineties and still
recalls her encounter with that nice young man bob dylan with affection.

I thought I read somewhere that while BandS were in New York last summer,
they filmed a video for Dylan in the Movies with Pennebaker. Has anyone
seen this, or did I create this in my dreamlike existence?

Renaldo and Clara was filmed during the Rolling Thunder Revue tour that Dylan
undertook in the mid 1970's. It isn't a concert film, but had a loose script
that was sort of adapted to what was happening during the tour -- which
featured Rob Stoner, Joan Baez, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Allen Ginsburg, Joni
Mitchell, Roger McGuinn, Ronee Blakely, Sara Dylan and many many others coming
and going (including Jack Kerouac's grave). Dylan plays a poet named
Renaldo, Ronnie Hawkins is Bob Dylan, Sara Dylan is someone called Clara and
Ronee Blakely is Mrs. Dylan. Joan Baez is herself, a whore and a mystery
woman... Something like 100 hours of film were shot and afterwards Dylan
worked to turn it into a coherent film. It was panned universally, leading
Dylan to say, "Maybe there are only two or three people in the universe who
are going to understand what it's about." But hey, it was his $1.2 million,
you know?
Sorry to go on and on... too much caffeine too late -- and avoidance of other

Has anyone else out there read "Our Noise" by Jeff Gomez? I found it in
the discount bin at the Tattered Cover. This is a rather large bookstore,
so I'm not sure if you'll find it at the local small shop. I really
enjoyed it. The novel isn't going to go down as a modern classic, but
here it goes:
The book is about 20-somethings living in the States in the late 80's.
Everyone is into the growing indy music scene, and the book takes place in
Charlotte VA, or some such city. It actually captures the Gen-X feel of
the 80's, and I identified with these characters more than with Copeland's,
maybe because they listened to alot of the same CD's that I did. Not
purely a grunge-fiction book, more like 80's punk-pop. The characters
seemed very like my friends 10 years ago (Yes, I'm a bit older than most of
the list members, I'm over 30, but don't shoot me) in a scary way, I
remembered some of the sordid sides of the scene, drugs, sex, the
sleep-with-me- because-I'm-in-a-band, and we're the next ones to get signed
and out of this cow town. The view on relationships reminded me of some
really bad break-ups, and stupid nights on the town, waking up in morally
comprimising positions, so to speak. So, for anyone wondering what it was
like to be in the US in the scene 10 ears back, or if you want a little
nostalgia for those irresponsible days and drunken nights, this is a pretty
fun and realistic read. It won't make the great classics of liturature,
but I for one can't be heavy all the time, that's how this old fart stays
young, by stimulating the mind with a good book, and refusing to act my age
(Or even of drinking age, for that matter).
So you all are subjected to my long-winded e-mails, as I act like the Peter
Pan child within.
I love you all,
funny names and whatnot
The crispy one

I just stumbled across this correspondence, so I've probably missed
everything...
The Secret History is good. My recommendation is The House of Sleep by
Jonathan Coe (paperback due next month). Not only did it have the most
beautiful tracing paper cover since Lowlife but it's the most B&S thing
I've ever read, involving dreams, beaches, children and the best Wim
Wenders joke I've ever heard.
Much love,
David

After sitting at the back off class and not putting my hand up for several
weeks, I blotted my copybook last week with a somewhat demented
post about Aqua. Many thanks to you all for drawing a veil over that. To
atone I would like to add "The Secret History" by Donna Tartt to the list of
essential reading matter. It's a book that proves conclusively that
classical Greek scholarship is the new rock 'n' roll. I'll go back to skulking
now. Bye.

When Dr. HoneyHoneyPaul was asking for Columbo videos yesterday he mentioned
_Wings of Desire_. A weeks ago, I told my father I had started reading _Wings
of Desire_, and when I finished we could see the movie in the theatres.
Moments lasted like an enternity before we realized my "faux pas": I had
meant I was reading Henry James' _The Wings of the Dove_. (For the record,
the first line is "She waited" but the rest of the novel is much better than
that.) We both politely laughed--just imagine the difference that exists in
high/low culture between the two! Later that night our discussion group came
to the family manor; we talk over the world's issues as a pretense to be
witty. The topic for the night was to be the differences in implicating
socialism as theorized or utilized between Marx, Lenin, and Mao Tse Tong. To
begin the roundtable banter we listened to the band McCarthy. The longer we
listened the more frightened we became. I daresay that the punks were coming
to chop of our heads! To protect ourselves we used our only asset--our
wealth. Bags of money fortified our ancestral manor house; the servants were
left on the grounds to fight off the marauding punks with the second-best
silver candelabra. Myself--I have stayed inside to finish my novel. We are
still waiting for the punks to attack; soon, I am sure.
I warned you--no B&S content. A little more on track, this afternoon I ate
my first _Tigersmilk_ candybar. For those of you with rude minds, it really
is a candybar in the US. As food, it was okay-to-fine, but not as good as the
album. Yes, I did eat my copy of the album just to compare it with the sweet.
It was a very rich meal in a variety of meanings of the word.
Living and loving
Matthew

Sinister: Videos

>Hey People with websites (and Jeepster esp), how about putting the ep
>videos onto websites so that those of us unlucky enough not to have mtv
>can have a look?
>(Or are there size/legal problems?)
ha, got it in one! i had 15 seconds or so of 'dog on wheels' digitised
and viewable but it was 2Mbytes in size. the 2 minutes of 'llpj' i had
was 8Mbytes*. even this large the quality was rather poor. there's also
the actual job of getting hold of the things in the first place - i was
lucky to catch the snippets i have. there are stills on the website but
no moving stuff.
(*i know, i could never figure out what i did to the second video to get
it to have twice the compression factor of the first...)
>It's only fair, the rest of us need to catch up, and we could do this
>before people spend extortionate amounts of money on swapping videos...
but money spent on videos / music must be disposable income anyway so
what does it matter what you spend it on. if it's not disposable income
and should be spent on food or bills or whatever then you are stupid.
oh, and another thing, i go and offer to partner tigermilkless people up
with people willing to do copies and people still post requests to the
list. why? haven't you people read the archives? dumbasses. the offer
still stands btw. currently i have 2 people in england wanting copies
and 3 people in the states(?) and one in thailand (hi!) willing to do
copies. send me (me, koogydelbbog(a)yahoo.com) your name and location if
you want to be added. just keep the requests off the list, ok?
(leslie, gez, your tapes went off this morning, bajinder, yours will go
off on saturday, nathan - yours is done but not enveloped yet, maybe
tomorrow)
have fun at snow patrol tonight those of you who are going. reports
tomorrow would be nice.
oh, and tag, that wasn't my sobriety i was proving but my advanced
intellect. 8) besides, i was in a team with the smackhead so i guess it
balanced out. one of the words he suggested was 'aquaern' which would
have been good, 7 letters and all, an extra 50 points. if only it
existed... 8)

am i fluffy enough for yer?
