Thanks Keith!
Just a word of warning if you're planning to go to this 'North' thingie:
Be aware it is just another 'FBI'/'Madchester' spin-off. It's run by the
same people (big Business), and probably has DJ 'Shine' Lee at the helm.
Despite having B&S on the flyer I suspect it'll be just another
'Day Tripper' affair ('FBI' ran that club as well).
Of course 'North' might be just your indie-kids cup of tea, or 'FBI' with
some musical taste. I'm not slagging it off just 'cos I run a club.
Strangely enough, the guy I run 'The Egg' with ran a club in Edinburgh
called 'North' for two years during the Madchester craze - so I told
him he should sue them.
Byeee!
The Laird of East Fountainbridge.
P.S. Dead clubs run by the FBI people: MI5, CIA, Fat Neck, Day Tripper,
Neighbouhood, Shaft, Big Fridays, Club Haka, E.R. and about a
half-dozen others. BEWARE!!! BOO TO THE BUSINESS WORLD.

No not the band.
All this talk of books involving food and sex reminds me of a book by
Patrick Suskind called 'Perfume'.
Although nothing to do with food or indeed sex, I think it would appeal to
most listees. Basically it's about a Frenchman who has an amazing sense of
smell and strives to capture the best smell in the world (the one we emit
just after dying - apparently). The desire to find this smell leads us
into the characters mind as he murders innocent people just to obtain this
beautiful smell.
The opening scene is the birth of the book's villian (a character you are
both repulsed by and can empathise with). His mother basically has the
child as she works in the fish market (using her gutting knife to cut the
ambilical cord).
I think it was this opening scene which reminded me of one of the books
previously mentioned.
I haven't really done the plot any justice at all here, but the language
used in the book is wonderful and the description of the central
characters olfactory ability is gorgeous. Go Buy It Now.
Anyway are sex and food equivalent to smell and murder ?

By a cruel twist of fate, I'm reading something pretty similar. I've just
started an Open University course called 'Computing : An Object Orientated
Approach'. A ton of books, binders and CD-ROMs landed on my doorstep
yesterday. Scary stuff.
Any other Open Uni students on the list?

C'est vrai. Although the 10" and a 12" = great expectations, the LP was OK.
Stock, Hausen and Walkman are good too, Dimitri from Paris, Gentle People,
Wiseguys(some), Mekon, Tipsy, Sabres' Wilmot, Plone(press a key)(The
'exquisite' casanova 70 is 'all I need' without the useless vocals)
And something irrelevant:

Called them this morning, it was sold last night for £160. Pff. You are
insane.

North, that puts me off given a rather dodgy Sunday night recently in
Manchester that Paul, Julia, Stuart and Susannah will remember.
Doubt it'll leave the Egg half empty especially if Whiteout are playing mind
you!
Oh and John, can you mail me Ian Jackson's email address, I've lost it.
Cheers.
Keith.

I went up and checked out the chat room last night and was surprised to see
that it wasn't there! So what happened! Have we all stopped talking?
Oh and I don't work for Virgin I'm afraid, I'm afraid I work at a
completely non-balooning company in Edinburgh programming computers. But the
Air record's still excellent, even if it does mean subsidising balooning
events.
Caught a look at Paul's photos from the Manchester gig which is cool and
brings back memories, and then makes me remember who certain people are and
stuff (bit of a haze the Saturday was)
Cheers,
Keith.

I have done my Civic Duty and voted on the Fanclub site. A marvellous
feeling of liberty there is too and I hope Nick enjoys my voting. He is
clearly the Peter Snow of the list and I look forward to some impressive
interpretation of the voting trends. In fact once in the booth I found I
was heavily influenced by a recent party poptastical broadcast and I
swung heavily in favour of "Century of Elvis" which I had been listening
to while doing my ironing last night. ***thinks...I have got to that
stage in my life where I hear a song and think "The words are alright;
but I couldn't really iron to it" (Am hoping new Air album will be tops
for domestic chores - whaddya say? - also am gutted that Peter managed
to fit in an Air Supply gag before I could think of one - kudos to you
PM) /end thinks****.
Anyhow as I skilfully wafted the iron over the crinkled mass of cotton
laid out before me I was listening to all the EPs but when C0fE (wow was
this a subliminal plot by the band to make us Anglicans...) came on I
put down my iron and my laundry and was comforted (as it says in the
Good Sleeve Note). Wonderful

I've found a web site that pretty good, and I thought some of you would be
interested. It's called 'Rainsound' and it covers mainly Scottish bands.
They have features on The Bathers, The Pearlfishers etc. There's also a
few mentions of Belle & Sebby, but not much yet. The address is :
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Studio/9230/home.htm
On a slightly different subject, does anybody on the list own a copy of the
compilation, 'In Bed With Marina'? If so, any chance of a copy? I'll can
offer a copy of Tigermilk or whatever in return.
Cheers

I'm developing a strange obsession for seeing how the chart on
http://www.totalweb.co.uk/bluesoda/cgi-bin/vote.cgi is developing. I think I'm
pining for the days when I used to sit next to the radio with my copy of the
previous week's Top 100 from Record Mirror and try to second guess what the
movers and shakers would be before Bruno Brookes announced them. Anyway,
'String Bean Jean' seems to be racing up the rankings, and I'm pleased to see
that 'Belle And Sebastian' is gaining form.
But have you seen that we can now also vote for a selection of unreleased
tracks too. But why the strange selection? What's wrong with (deep breath):
Loneliness Of The Middle Distance Runner, Chick Factor, London Has Let Me Down
Again, Hurley's Having Dreams, A Summer Wasting, Tigermilk, Is It Wicked Not To
Care, Ease Your Feet In The Sea, Rhoda or Soft Touch. What's that you say? No
ones even heard the last two? Pah - who cares. Cast your vote anyway. Think of
it like a general election - you never know what horrors evil Tony and his
stooges are going to bring but you mark your X all the same. Perhaps Soft
Touch will start mugging disabled single mothers within six months of being
released, but that's the gamble. Anyway, you can always change your vote.
Nick
