Boy, gone less than a week and I miss the list, the chatting,
everything...
Vacation for me is consisting of much sleeping, and I just got my grades
for last quarter, and I'm sure you'll all be pleased to know that I did
well in my classes, despite the distraction of the aforementioned vices
(list/chatting).
since my email access is sporadic until I return to school, a couple of
notes:
to anyone waiting for their T-milk tapes, no worries, they're all in the
mail.
you lucky folks who are going to Manchester: take explicit mental notes
during the shows so that afterwards you can taunt all of us who couldn't
make it with the juicy details...! I will be there in spirit, having set
up a makeshift shrine of my B&S decorated coconut and poster and picture
and candles, maybe...with assorted B&S tunes playing softly in the
background...trying to telepathically will myself to Manchester.
oh, well. anyone want anything from Disney World?
until the next time I can hijack someone's computer...
take care,
Amanda

I phoned the Virgin Piccadilly box office yeaterday because I was concerned.
they told me that they had not yet received the tickets. They also said that
if the tickets had not arrived by Friday (last day of guaranteed post
arrival pre-Xmas) they would make some arrangements about leaving them on
the doors for us.
I hope this all works. Or I'll cry. And then start a riot.
Not sure if this will reassure you or not, Chris.
And congratulations on beating the mighty Torquay United so convincingly
last night ;).
Cheers and bah humbug

Sarcastic, not me mate....I meant every word, but I just wasn't hard
enough on 'the lizard king' (I reckon 'the reptile twat' is far more
appropriate). But I would never be sarky about St Nick, who I love
very much. In amongst all those forgettable and not particularly
regrettable (hey! that's good, I nicked it from the Simpsons) rock
n'roll deaths, his was a genuine tragedy.

Blimey, I never knew that. I really didn't, and it's interesting.

Well, yes I do, but I don't think that's a reason to hate him. 'Your
song', 'Daniel', 'Song for Guy'...wonderful stuff. A friend of my
mother's was in the same year at school as our Reg, and remembers a
shy little six year old who sat on his own playing the piano at kid's
parties (it wasn't Elton...she just remembers one) (that bit in
brackets was a joke, and it was very, very funny).
And he and I share a birthday (he's a bit older than me). Along with
Aretha Franklin, Paul-Michael Glaser, Simone Signoret AND the
saxophone player from Spandau Ballet (Steve Norman, for those who are
bothered). I know this for a fact because I am a vaguely tragic human
being, who has an unfathomable curiosity for people that he shares a
star sign with (Serge Gainsbourg is my favourite co-Aries. John Major
and Damon Albarn aren't).

Well, yes. But I sort of prefer not to think about B&S's influences -
your illusions can be shattered if you find some of your favourite
musical moments are second-hand.
Hey! Senor Pedro 'Cojones del Toro' Miller is back! And this time he
wants to rock with the Zep. Pero te quiero, anyway.
I should have some interesting news regarding Manchester in the next
couple of days.....keep watching the skies.
It's snowing, maybe I'll see a fox, and maybe I couldn't give a toss.

Long Live Sinister-Digest.
I have been strongly advised by my IT Liaison Officer that the downloading of IRC software could seriously damage my health/career prospects/lead to me having my bottom smacked..etc.etc.
Despite flagrantly abusing those IT facilities already provided me, I am dependent on this list: a) for sanity;
b) to fill 2-3 hours of my working day;
c) you are the only people I know.
I love the list,
The list loves me,
I refuse to get like this :-(
Because of IRC.
Please I implore you all....just because you may have this new wonderful bloody software, don't unsubscribe...we love you all really.

I have the book in my hand. it's yellow, it's called:
Nick Drake
the Biography
Patrick Humphies
ISBN 0-7475-2976-0
I haven't started reading it yet.
The sad thing is though that Gabrielle Drake (his sister) and Joe Boyed
(producer) didn't help with the writing of the book.
I got into B & S because nearly every b&s review mentioned Nick.
The dust cover has the following words:
Nick Drake was barely 26 years old when he died in 1974. The British
singer-songwriter made only three albums during his short life - Five
Leaves Left, Bryter Layter and Pink Moon. All are now recognised as
classics.
Since his death, Nick has been cited as a seminal influence by stars as
diverse as REM, Elton John, Paul Weller, Jackson Browne, Everything But
The Girl, Tom Verlaine and Matt Johnson of The The. While the lives of
other musicians who died before their time, such as Jim Morrison, John
Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Gram Parsons, have been amply
documented, there has never before been a biography of Nick Drake.
Patrick Humphries' illuminating text includes exclusive interviews with
friends, colleagues and musicians who knew and worked with Nick. It
provides an unprecedented insight not only into the life and work of
Nick Drake, but also into the music scene of the 1960s that formed his
backdrop.
The author's lifelong appreciation of and interest in Nick Drake were
further fuelled when he discovered that his uncle Dr. James Lusk
actually delivered Nick into the world and remained a friend of the
Drake family. In these Pages he draws on a long letter from Nick's
father to Dr. Lusk, in which he describes how his wife, Nick's mother,
discovered Nick's body during the morning of 25 November 1974, following
an accidental overdose of prescribed drugs.
I a week is a long time in politics, then the 23 years since Nick's
death represent a lifetime in the transitory world of pop. But the music
of Nick Drake has never lost its place in his fans' affections, and
still its haunting beauty reaches out to fresh generations. This book is
for all of them.
Writer and journalist Patrick Humphries is the author of acclaimed
biographies of Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and Richard Thompson. He lives in
London.
Happy Christmas

Hiya all,
Off tomorrow back home to Glasgow for Crimbo. Boxing Day this year won't
go fast enough, what with the gigs the following two days!
btw (a list question now) is it possible to put at the top of the digest
a grouping of the titles of messages in it?
Merry Christmas, and c u in Manchester.

very surprised when I saw the ad in the NME yesterday, I was under the
impression it was the actual gig that was taking place in the afternoon
rather than an extra one..
so, who's going to all THREE shows?
#Sinister is bluddy GRAET by the way, you should all irc if you haven't yet.
no doubt they'll soon be serving maarmoite sarndwiches soon too

A festive attachment for you all...
Meanwhile, in other news...
Ivor Cutler - he read here at the Poetry Society a few months back. I met
him before the show, and he was reading a preview piece I'd written for a
magazine. He asked me what exactly I meant by 'Kafka-esque Zen Surrealism'.
"Well, Ivor..." I began. "That's MR Cutler to you, young man". Nevertheless
he was jolly good. I have some copies of his latest recording, and if I can
think of a decent question I might set another competition...
Nick Drake - before the pop quiz at the Jon Snow a few weeks back I was
wasting time in central London, so I went to Helter Skelter, the rocknpop
bookshop on Denmark St. They were having a launch for Patrick Humphries'
book, and who should I bump into on my way out, but Mark Eitzel! He looked
quite cheerful for such a miseryguts...
Incidentally, Tag, the link between Elton and Drake is that Joe Boyd tried
to persuade the Queen Mother of Pop to cover some of his songs in a last
attempt to get some cross-over success.
Just read the new Maker and they're raving about the forthcoming shows:
"Live, B&S will simply enthrall you". Lets hope so, eh? Oh, there's also an
ad for the matinee show - 12.30 on the Sunday - "due to overwhelming public
demand". Isn't it exciting?!
See some of you tonight in the chatroom?
Stephen
