The New Yorker article reads, in (the B&S) part:
....... "To an American fan, the British music scene is a scary
paradise. On the one hand, the record companies, the press and the audience
all seem more open to unexpected sounds. There is not, as in the United
States, a barrier between major and independent labels: the underground can
see the light of day in an instant. Elite radio d.j.s, like John Peel, on
the BBC, consult their own taste and ignore whatever sinister lottery
generates the Top Forty. Lately, programmers and critics have helped make
minor hits out of the delicately skewed ballads of Belle and Sebastian, the
imposing soundscapes of Mogwai, and the Sonic Youth nostalgia of Placebo. On
the othe hand, all this freespiritedness slides a little too easily into a
nihilistic lust for novelty. Toread the British music press is to be
bombarded by buzzwords for weeks-old styles pioneered by bands that have
been around for a few months and will probably be gone in a year."...
Article by Alex Ross
It goes on to discuss the musical influences on Oasis, Radiohead and other
bands.

The September 29 issue of The New Yorker magazine has and article titled
"DADROCK Revisiting the Sixties with Oasis and Radiohead" that echoes many
topics that have been discussed on this list (which many probably don't want
reopened). The B&S part is as follows:

as anyone else realised that by putting 're: compo' as a
subject line and writing stuff in a certain way gets around
paul's restrictions on what is and isn't proper subject
matter for this list? 8)
this one's of a train, the 17:44 from euston to points west.
it's now approaching 18:00 and the train's still in the
station and tempers are beginning to fray. in the centre of
the frame is a youngish girl, black t-shirt with a purple
star, blonde shoulder-length hair tied back. she'd be
attractive but for the look on her face - she's not happy.
knowing that the train was going to be a while she'd just
popped out for ice-cream and there it is, a tub in each
hand. you can't make out what flavour it is but you know
it's going to be expensive (because that's the only type you
can buy in railway stations). anyway, she's just got back to
find that her boyfriend has given her seat to a stranger and
she'll have to stand until at least watford...
(i was as happy as a clam. i had anne tyler and a walkman
full of swedish pop from thailand for company. and i could
claim the whole thing as overtime at about 20 pence a
minute...)
um, wallace and grommit. you can now officially get anything
in the whole world with wallace and grommit printed on it.
no, really. (those shawn-shaped shoulder bags always make me
smile)
oh, and if the person from iceland still wants a copy of
tigermilk then just mail me...

Hello all,
Sorry to break in on the real discussions, but could someone send me (off the list) the B&S guitar transcriptions that have been worked out so far. I know a few have been sent to the list, so someone must have put together a collection of sorts. Thanks in advance :)

> Has anyone read the small print beneath the lyrics for Pulp albums? It
says,
> "Please do not read the lyrics while listening to this recording". Maybe
> that'd be a good idea for B&S...?
That line haunted me for years. I tried to adopt that as a rule of thumb,
but it was just the other day, while listening to 4st 7lb from The Holy
Bible by the Manics - I thought "I know these are fabulous words, but I
can't hear half of them. What's the point of missing out on them just for
some petty statement on a few albums half as good as this one [bearing in
mind that The Holy Bible is at least twice as good as most contenders]."
So I followed it with the lyrics, and for the first time realised that he
was singing 'This discipline's so rare so please applaud", "It's the way
you're built my father said, but I can change".......and countless other
products of the genius that was Richey James in 1994.
So, basically, no. If you don't understand what Stuart's singing [unlikely
in itself], for God's sake look it up!

I read a couple messages about lines that are written one way in the
lyric sheet and sung differently. I've always wondered about this, with
Belle and other bands. Is it just an oversight? Are they playing with us?
Obviously the wording evolves as a song comes about, but why is the lyric
sheet sometimes (a bit) off?
Examples, "if you just want to cuddle...we won't get into trouble" vs.
"we won't get in the muddle." "You are the one who's privy" vs. "I am the
one..." The order of "I had to catch a bus" and "I had to go to work..."
Now I know I'm bordering on obsessive, but a literary band like B&S
(they even write all right as two words -- my freshman English teacher
would be proud), I'm curious about this little thing...

This is a photo of Matt's hat. As you can see, it's a reddish knit watch cap
that used to be a deeper shade a couple of years ago. Since the hat is lying
on top of a pile of dirty clothes, Matt must be in the shower or asleep
because those are the only times that the hat isn't on his head. He's been
wearing it everyday for several years now, ever since the Zambonis threw it
out into the audience at an in-store show at Secret Sounds. Actually, it is
not the original hat. That one was grabbed off his head at school by someone
who poured chocolate milk in it and threw it on the roof or in the dumpster.
The dean wouldn't do anything about it. Dave Zamboni went right home and
got this hat for Matt when he heard the story and it has become a fact of
our lives. Once, the hat got left behind in Barbados. But Matt's
grandfather got in touch with the hotel from Miami between flights and they
sent it back via Fed-Ex overnight, so it was only missing for one day.
Another time, the hat blew out a bus window on a highway in Maine. The bus
driver had to radio back to the camp and Howie, who runs the farm, drove 5 or
6 miles to pick it up off the road. If you look closely you can see a little
tear in the side. Matt swears his sister tried to cut up his hat, which is
feasible because she's 14 and finds it embarrassing, but I don't think she
did. Anyway, no one around here would need to actually have Matt in the
picture to know this is a photo of him.
