That bit's always reminded me of the theme from Hawaii Five-o.........but

hello,
I can't believe my eyes - someone has mentioned the Incredible String
Band! Completely underrated. I read that they have just reformed and
are about to play some gigs, believe it or not.
I must admit the connection is not obvious at first sight... nor at
second sight... er, which B&S songs are you thinking of?
B&S mishearings: I thought the line in "My Wandering Days are Over"
was "sex my son, de Winter's gone" and was a reference to a priest's
hopeless adulation for a black and white film character.
Actually that is a complete and utter lie. But I laughed. (Vacuous
Thursday afternoons...)

Hello,
I always thought in "Seeing Other People" the words "Your kissing your
double, your kissing your reflection" were sang instead of "Your kissing
your elbow etc.".
I thought it was about these skinny long hair boys who go to discos and
get stuck into skinny long hair girls who look the same as them. And It
got me thinking is it incredibly vain to be attracted to someone who
looks like you, or is it worse to think you can do better.
I just read that. I know what I mean.
Anyway, the person who said the trumpet from "Dog On Wheels" is like
"Alone Again Or" by Love is spot on. It sounds like B & S have tried to
do the same things with the guitar flurries throughout the song.
Stuart Murdoch's voice occasionally reminds me of the Incredible String
Band. This is initially what attracted me to B & S.
I'm off
Chris

Anyway, the person who said the trumpet from "Dog On Wheels" is like
"Alone Again Or" by Love is spot on. It sounds like B & S have tried to
do the same things with the guitar flurries throughout the song.
[Keith Watson]
Well that's got to be Mick well and truly praised then (Stuart told him to "Play like Love" on Dog on Wheels), although I'd say the song was more like "A House is not a Motel", at least in passing. I actually like Dog on Wheels generally more than Love myself, despite liking Forever changes a lot.
Ooooo... I've just spotted a cracking quote from Simon Price in this weeks Melody Maker:
"Oasis let us head the inarticulate speech of their hearts. Anyone who calls their music dumb is closer to another truth altogether, because theirs is the expression of all the things that can't be expressed"
There's quite a lot of folk banging on about Oasis in the press at the moment - I feel a bit left out, I generally most of the time agree with the general press opinion, and times when I've disagreed with them I've invariably come around, but I just don't get Oasis at all, is it me, or are they really something more than just a bunch of brickies writing turgid tunes that are invariably copped off of other people - am I wrong in thinking that almost all of their songs sound exactly the same?
Anyway, back to the grindstone.
Cheers,
Keith.

......to point out a personal faux pas
is that really a good idea?
speaking of mis- hearing lyrics...
i remember there was talk a while ago of a 'star wars' connection or
reference in a B&S song.(?? which one)
and i thought, "oh, just like in lazy line painter jane"...
"being a rebel scum.."
which doesn't really make any sense, especially when they're really
saying "being a rebel's fine..."
*cringe and blush*

I've collected together the guitar tabs sent recently - thanks to
Dazza, Alan, Keith and Giuseppe. Sorry I had to chuck some
duplicates.

Keith - I took a few friends to Egg on Saturday night. We all enjoyed it.
Glad to hear a fair bit of B&S. Thought I saw you, but didn't want to go
over incase it was not you.
[Keith Watson]
I was at the Egg on Saturday - so it probably was me - but I didn't see you - sorry, I was rubbered as usual mind you - yes it was dead cool (I'm glad MS Word 97's grammar checker's not looked at that last sentence), A Century of Fakers, Put the book back on the shelf and Le Pastie de la bourgeousie - Ace.
Sorry I didn't catch you - it's odd like, it's not that big a place and I can remember roughly what you look like - oh well, next time maybe.
I'll probably not be there on Saturday - Death in Vegas/Black Star Liner are on at Potterrow, so I'll probably go along to that instead. I may well however be there the week subsequent.
Cheers,
Keith.

Hi!
Do anyone have the lyrics to "My wandering days are over". I have a bit of
a problem with internet right now, so if that anyone could just email me, I
would be very grateful.
I will then make you alla a report on what I thought Stuart was singing
before...
Or maybe not.
I would also be very interested to hear from the Duke what kevin pearce
thinks about Belle & Sebastia. Not that I would change my mind or really
care if he dislikes them, but because he´s a briliant writer.
I don´t know how many people noticed the Hal Hartley quote in "I could be
dreaming", the one from Trust (I think), that goes " A family is lika a
loaded gun, if you point it in the wrong direction...". Has anyone found
any more Hal Hartley-oriented topics in B&S lyrics. Stuart David mentioned
him as an inspiration in my interview for the fanzine STATE (which I´m
trying to change to the STATE I am in - of course:-)).
What did MM and NME write about the band in their Single of the week reviews?

Oh, just read the rest of the compo thing, and the winner gets a vinyl copy of
Sinister, vinyl LLPJ, Dog poster, LLPJ poster, and a t-shirt (you have to
specify S/M/L) and a badge. The next 9 get a t-shirt and a badge, and the next
18 get a poster of either Dog or LLPJ. Once again good luck.
Ben.

Greetings. For all of you who aren't privy to NME, there is a competition in
it to win 'LOADS of Belle & Sebastian GOODIES - like records ! T-shirts !
Posters ! And badges ! - from recordings past'. All you have to do is name
B&S's first album (Duh !!) a) 'Tiger Bay' b) 'Tiger Milk' c) 'Tiger Balm'. If
you want to save your money buying NME, just send your answer to
'It's Not Your Money They're After Boy, It's Your Comp'
On Desk,
NME,
25th Floor,
King's Reach Tower,
Stamford Street,
London,
SE99 0BB.
By October 18th (so all you yanks have a chance !!).
Also see that 3, 6, 9 seconds is number 3 on the 'stereo' in NME. Went to see
Tanya Donnelly last night, which was super, and before she came on, they
played Century of Elvis, which made me smile, and there was a small smatter of
applause no less from the front, whether it was for the song, or a glimpse of
Tanya, I know not. Also tried to tear a poster of LLPJ down from outside a
pub, but the glue defeated me, and it ended up in 12 bits. I left it. Good
luck in the competition (hint: I don't think it's a !!)
Ben.
