A friend of mine tells me that B&S were on Spanish radio the other
evening. The DJ praised their simplicity! Obviously never tried playing
a Rolf Harris Stylophone on roller skates!
And my friend asked me if it was a boy or a girl singing. So I
explained that rigid notions of one's sexuality are no longer
fashionable, and that it was a bloke with a big girl's blouse type
voice.
My boredom knows no bounds today. I've just watched Napoleon the
Adventurous Puppy on video. I come here hoping for light relief and what
do I find? "unsubscribe" !!**?¿!! At this rate we might have to have
another pink polaroid competition.

John Stuart wrote ...
>BTW, it was Radcliffe who first started playing Belle & Sebastian.
For your history books ... Peter Easton (Beat Patrol/Radio Scotland) already
played a Stuart Murdoch demo back in early 1994 (!) ... most probably "Le
Pastie De La Borgeousie", since it was Stuart's first classic ...

>What do people think of them imminently becoming mainstream? This >question has brought infinite internal conflict to myself
I know what you mean Matt, I don't think I could handle B&S becoming mainstream. What would be worse was if Chr*s Ev*ns has them on his show when the next EP is released. We all know he would then claim to have discovered them and popularised the band when we all know any success would be down to the exceptional songs and not some arrogant jumped-up failed DJ whose TV show has almost played as many crap songs as Atlantic 252.

ok, since im having to deal with sifting through all the mail from this
list i might as well post about some b+s stuff.
sinister just never gets old. i have a dub for my car with tigermilk on one
side and sinister on the next and let me tell you it is the very best way
to spend a drive to vegas and back-we listened to that tape nonstop for 300
miles. each way. sinister is obviously the best album of 97 and i seriously
think it might be the best of the 90's period.
far from being a chris douridas morning becomes eclectic fan, i think the
intro about b+s songs being old friends you havent met is passable. after
the first couple listens i was on the brink of tears thinking they were
better than the smiths, better than magnetic fields, better than the
cannanes, better than anything id ever heard and sure to live in my heart
for the rest of my life the way a small few other bands have. so maybe
that's what he meant-their songs' instant "classic" appeal.
on that note ill say i heard for the first time lazy line painter jane or
whatever it's called today on the radio and was quite underwhelmed. it went
on too long, the female vocals are iffy at best-as were the male's on this
take, and the basic rock n' roll lick of the thing was a put off. well im
exageratting-can you tell i have a penchant for that-but truly i was a bit
sad cause it didnt sound very magical.
lastly, on "The Boy Done Wrong Again" there is a part, a bridge i guess,
where the violins come in after he sings "i will be happy now" for the
first time. anyways, the chords and the sound of that moment have always
reminded from the first time i heard it, to the wonderful song Aurora by
the Cat's Miaow. Play 'em back to back and see if you see what i mean. Play
em back to back anyways cause it's a real treat.
cheers, mike

I saw Geneva play in Baltimore last night...They were truly lovely, I
must say....Anyway, I chatted with Andrew Montgomery, the singer with
the angelic voice, for a while.... The topic of Belle & Sebby came up
in our conversation, and he proclaimed his adoration for Tigermilk,
and utmost respectfor the work of B&S. He also mentioned that his
favourite song is "The State I'm In"... Another B&S note from the
show: Catherine Wheel (the headline act) had "...Sinister" playing in
the dressing room...
I'm wondering if anyone in the US has a cassette of a live B&S gig (or
a video for that matter!)....
Proudly sporting me new pair of terry underwear,
Gregg
