Unfortunately I don't think B&S will ever be as successful as is hoped by most on this list. They just don't seem right for the time, hence the reason why those who appreciate music and people in the industry think they're the best thing since sliced bread...unlike the masses, they see a bloody good band with great songs. The music buying public probably won't go near them unless they hear comparisons with Oasis and such. Assuming my younger sister is typical of most young teenagers ( she bought Spice Girls, Oasis, Hanson etc.) then B&S will remain in obscurity, although I can hear her singing along when it's played in the car, when her mates come round it's "this is what my brother listens to, snigger, let's go and play P*t*r Andr*."
A parallel is the West Coast Pop art experimental band, everyone thought they were good, and now they're early albums are worth loads, I think they were the only band on the reprise label to have three albums and no hit, again they were just wrong for the time... pity, but then if B&S ever did make it into the top 40 I can't see them staying there, they'll be dismissed by the general public as being a folk band with a cult following who happen to have made an extremely rare album. (It was 'the Guardian' who called them folky.) who cares about the made-up top 40 anyway?

I can't be the only one that is pretty bored by the constant comparisons to
Nick Drake, they are misleading at best.
OK there is the plaintive vocals but the music is very different. I hate it
when B&S are described as 'folky' too
The first thing I thought of when I heard Mayfly (for instance) was
'Drumbeat for Baby' by Weekend. Have B&S ever mentioned Weekend???
Come to think of it Young Marble Giants spring to mind too, despite the
minimalism of the instrumentation which is very different to B&S (which
only sounds simple by the admirable restraint and careful complimantary
playing of the Bellesters). When I saw YMG (sorry just had to mention that,
it was in Dunfermline, support was the Thompson Twins) they managed the
same B&S type spell which the best B&S gigs have.
Felt are mentioned, and at least I can kinda agree with that, though only
early Felt, and only in a Durutti Column sort of way. Nothing past
'crumbling...' I would have thought.
Anyway, other suggestions?

I'm from Brussels, and it would be great if B&S were to come there --
of course, I know that we should be objective cause the others boys,
etc.

a quid is one pound, worth about one and a half of your 'bucks'. return plane
tickets from heathrow to new york start at around 219 quid (mine was 236). then
the english and american governments both add 'airport tax' and stuff so 200
quid will probably only get you there and half way back. which is unfortunate.

something i should've pointed out yesterday (if it wasn't obvious) is that i'm
in england and whilst all you people from faraway places can send me tapes for
copies of tigermilk it'll cost you more and you're going to have difficulty
with the return postage aspects of stuff (because english post offices don't
accept american stamps, duh). international reply coupons do work but they mean
i have to take a trip down to the postoffice to change them which'll delay your
tape.
so, basically, you yanks can go and ask pam for a copy instead (hooray for
pam). (actually, i remember meaning to put 'i'm a tiger' by international
strike force and 'i am milk' by garbage in the gaps at the end of pam's tape
but i never did, i think you got 'white horses' and the adventures in stereo
session instead).
oh, and you get minus points if you offer me britpop tapes in exchange!
v-twin supported b&s at the glasgow gig in march but they were on before
adventures in stereo and b&s and so they counted as more of an annoyance than a
treat and i can't remember a lot about them.

um, about 8 requests for copies so far, half of whom will probably never get
around to sending the tapes so...
oh, soozy, your sessions tape is done, i'll need an address...

Surely B&S's sound is far too intimate to be huge. A song like "Get me
away from here, I'm dying" would be completely lost in a stadium.
They'll only get big if they beef it up, in the same way as the Divine
Comedy have become successful only since they got a 40 piece orchestra
in to record the Casanova album (which incidentally is fabulous). The
closest B&S have got to that so far was on LLPJ, which almost went top
40 as a result.
As for being too miserable to be popular, well OK so they're not ABBA
(hey shame!). But they're complete hedonists compared to Radiohead, and
OK Computer was a number one all over the world.

Wow, I never knew this. I saw The Diggers support The Supernaturals last
year in Edinburgh. They were really, really good.

>i love this band, right...but the problem is i live in france...and when i
try to tell people about them and stuff, they they smile, or just downright
make fun of me...i don't know if you all know this, but "belle et sebatien"
was the name of a rather soppy tv show about a small boy and this bloody
great dog...a french show...from which the obvious question springs : was
it shown in england?
Yes it was......it was shown on the BBC children's program slot (weekdays, 5-5.30), probably sometime in the early 70's. I seem to recall it being rather poorly dubbed into English, with a woman's voice for the part of the boy, Sebastian, (why do they always use women's voices for boy's parts?). I don't think they overdubbed the dog (Belle), which was a big white long-haired animal (St Bernard? Mountain dog?). At the time, the BBC were showing a lot of dubbed European childrens programs, such as Belle and Sebastian, The Singing Ringing Tree (Czech, I believe), and White Horses (of the wonderful Jackie theme song fame). I'm sure there were others......

On a blank piece of paper draw a pig.
Then scroll down and read the interpretation of your pig!!
Draw your pig first! And don't look at the next part until
you are done! It won't be fun if you look first.
******************************************************
The pig serves as a useful test of the personality traits of the
drawer.
If the pig is drawn:
Toward the top of the paper,
you are positive and optimistic.
Toward the middle,
you are a realist.
Toward the bottom,
you are pessimistic, and have a tendency to behave negatively.
Facing left,
you believe in tradition, are friendly, and remember dates
(birthdays,
etc.)
Facing right,
you are innovative and active, but don't have a strong sense of
family,
nor do you remember dates.
Facing front (looking at you),
you are direct, enjoy playing devil's advocate and neither fear
nor
avoid discussions.
With many details,
you are analytical, cautious, and distrustful.
With few details,
you are emotional and naive, you care little for details and
are a
risk-taker.
With less than 4 legs showing,
you are insecure or are living through a period of major
change.
With 4 legs showing,
you are secure, stubborn, and stick to your ideals.
The size of the ears indicates how good a listener you are.
The bigger the better.
The length of the tail indicates the quality of your sex
life!!!!
(And again more is better!)
