Since some people are kind of upset with all the non-B+S stuff that pops up
on the list, I have a suggestion. What about a newsgroup
(alt.music.belleandsebastian, maybe?)? The down side would be, of course, a
lot of smut that isn't even related to music. Another thing, however, would
be that it might sort of devalue this list. I don't want to sew any
dissension in the ranks (what with a shiny new list and all), and I certainly
like having things in my mailbox, so what are some of the ideas on this?
--Matt Waggner
--wasn't there someone who was upset at their choice of shirts? If you
wanted, I'd be happy to pick up the other one for you (if they have the same
ones) at the NY show. Just let me know, and I'll see what I can do...
--any word yet on a Boston show? it's getting pretty close to "too late"...
--one last note--(not to stir up the "elvis" controversy just when it was
about petered out) I think Elvis could just be a friendly sort of wanderer in
the neighborhood--There are a couple people in my neighborhood who are
familiar faces, and while we're not that friendly with them that they could
come in the house and watch TV, it wouldn't be inconcievable...

Alas...There is no US tour. Just three shows in New York as far as I know. There might be a show in Chicago too, but the way things are going, that is highly doubtable. The New York show would have been funded through the Enclave who had big major label money...but now I guess the tour is being funded by Jeepster on a slightly more shoestring budget. (i hope they won't be staying on St. Marks place, otherwise it could be a title for a new song of theirs).

Are Belle and Sebastian's current US "tour" being funded through the
label (that being either Jeepster, or the Enclave), or by themselves?
Is Jeepster there own label, or some indie wing off a major?

Oops that's torn it. Any who knows the majordomo software will know I
messed up there (but I rectified it!).
I am having a lot of trouble keeping submissions to the list restricted
only to list members (an attempt to stop email) so I am about to open it
up to submissions to anyone. The problem is that people's email programs
generate different emails addresses than their subscription addresses.
But I can't keep up with fixing these - at least 10 today already so I
will open the list up to postings from anyone I'm afraid. Please let me
know if anyone thinks we are being troubled by junk email from outsiders.
On the subject of "irrelevancy" I still welcome comments like below - but
could they be sent to me rather than the list? I am happy to abide by the
majority decision and certainly don't want to censor - just trying to make
the list good for everyone. I promise I will fairly summarise the
majority feeling and act accordingly.

The film is absobloodylutely brilliant. Very Morrissey. Although
Saturday Night and Sunday Morning is better.

Hi everyone
I've been on the list for a couple of days now, and have been feeling a
little furtive for homing on on all of of your conversations without
letting on that I'm reading them, so here I am, outing myself.
Following a brief spell during which I refused to look/listen into the
magic of Belle & Sebastian due to my assumptions that they were
inherently linked to their animated counterparts (does anyone remember
that strange Norweigian cartoon?), I stumbled upon them in Glasgow one
day, and things have never been quite the same...
Also, Andy Dean was asking something about Polar Bear - I don't know a
great deal, but I can tell you that their debut single was called
Starfighter Pilot, and did indeed come out on Electric Honey, the same
label which released Tigermilk. Inkeeping with this tradition, it also
looks like they are now signed to Jeepster Recordings, home, of course,
to B & S.
I managed to procure a copy of said single in the Notting Hill record
exchange, and a fine record it is - and Stuart Murdoch provides some
backing vocals and whistles and things throughout. I'm not sure where
it's available now, but Starfighter Pilot, and the third track, Safety,
are magic.
Sorry for the length of this message - just thought I'd say Hi
Love Nicola x

Re: Relevant messages.
I hope we don't get to the poinnt of censorship. One idea might be for
us all to include an explicit ( in the sense of explanatory ) subject
line. That way people can delete straight away without wasting their
time. Personally I'm all for a rich and varied range of subjects, after
all, they all start off as B&S related. I think it would be a shame to
restrict it. If any of you have been unfortunate enough to see the Beach
Boys message board, you'll be familiar with the effects of heavy-handed
management. Almost every time I post something I get accused of
attacking people or whatever, when all I'm trying to do is offer what
little bit of information I can in my own style. Which is a bit daft at
times, but I hope never offensive or abrasive. I'm always on my best
behaviour on the computer. Ooh, I do waffle sometimes. So, I vote for
free speech. Otherwise we don't get to find out what everybody's really
like.
Re: Stars of Field
I had the honour of representing my school at high jump when I was about
eleven. At the county championships I didn't clear a single whatever you
call it.
Re. B&S members sporting antics.
I'm sure I read somewhere that Stuart Murdoch was once an ameteur boxer.
Then again I might have dreamt it.
Re: Cut and Paste.
How does that work, then? I'm green with envy every time I see these
nicely laid out replies.
All right, all right, I'm going!
Peter

well hello everyone,
sometime within the last day or so andy dean said:
>there are people on the list that were previously happy to handle the
>american side of things too (whether they still are now that there
>are 200 people on the list is a different matter, the chance that
>i'll get 200 requests for tapes is kinda daunting).
and
>and, of course, all those people i've already done tapes for, they'll
>help you too, i'm sure of it...
count me in both categories, if anyone over here needs a tape, I'm
everhappy to dub a copy of the tigermilk/sessions tape andy sent me
originally. just send a 90 minute tape my way:
1853 monroe st. NW
washington, DC
20010
USA
or if it's easier, e-mail me at home to let me know you want one and
I'll get started on it in a timely fashion, which is not like me at
all, but this is belle and sebastian we're talking about and people
can change. we can always work out some sort of trade for postage.
I'll dub until the dubber breaks, then if need be, I'll go next door
and dub some more (borrow a cup of sugar and a tigermilk dub?)...
cheers,

there is something strangely unsettling this morning. True, the California
sunshine bathes us in bright upon bright as if it feels obligated. People
seem to be happy. We have money in our pockets and tunes in our heads.
But B&S won't come to visit me, and until this is settled, I think I'll
continue feeling like there's a penny in my shoe.
At least I've found this list, which seems to have many interesting spirits
on board.
For the record, I wank at a computer company by day. I dj drum and bass at
night but come from a pop background, stealing old donovan records from my
british dad who won't have any of it anymore. Anything with a melody and a
mood will please me: Spacemen, Smiths, Galaxy, Velvets.
Nice to hear mention of the Go-betweens:) Any flying nun fans out there?
