The point of what I'm saying, the reason that I may be seeming a touch critical of B&S, is that I remember from ten years ago how many bands, artists, writers, whatever, were trying to make it on their own terms and never got anywhere near a mass audience. In so many ways, Belle and Sebastian feel like the band I've been waiting for for a decade, the fulfilment of all my pop dreams of the perfect fusion of songs and beauty and youth and so on and on. I might be being unfair but I have the highest hopes for them and I am desperate they don't blow it, blow this unique position they've found themselves in. They could be so important while taking a critical stance on the tainted music industry. Or they could be another brilliant band playing music that we love, by the rules. I'm sure they understand. Sign after sign, hint after hint show that they understand how important it could be to find a position of strength without the homogenising cultural muscle of the music industry. (A homogenising cultural muscle whose products I also enjoy, but would cherish an alternative to). I'm saying this now bedcause I love them, I'm saying it now because I don't want to be sad or angry in two years having been let down again, like I was (we were, eh duke?) with Hurrah! or the Smiths or so many others years ago. um, that should've been koogydelbbog(a)yahoo.com. sorry. have just finished the nme article and am now less happy about it than i was. it sounds like they just turned up without anyone having agreed to an interview. in which case they got what they deserved. um, donations for a new pc are going to be difficult. yep, 300+ people on the list. unfortunately most of them are foreign and the only one going to be happy with all this foreign money wending it's way to south london will be the banks charging lots of cash to change it into english. i doubt their pc needs a lot doing to it, they rarely do. just buy a replacement for the bit that's given up rather than a whole new pc... andy ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Apart from Astral Weeks which is some other kind of classic, I guess. i think if we start thinking about the artists as 'just' artists then we miss out on a lot. in fact i think maybe we miss out on some essence of what makes them mean something to us in the first place. You need to claim art for yourself. As soon as a piece of work for 'public consumption' is released, be it a Pop song, architecture or software or whatever, it's down to the individual 'consumer' or user, to interpret it, apply it, use and abuse it in whatever way they see fit. I completely agree. Pop, for me, is all obout crativity. That means the act of creating your own meanings and excitement out of pop as much as it means creating fanzines, your own music, whatever. Pop gives us an excellent space for inventing ourselves and reinventing our world. That's not to say that pop can be directly responsible for any future downfall of capitalism. What Belle & Sebastian might do, it seems to me, is actually create a situation where much of this right to abuse and adapt their art to the needs of the user is left intact, is manipulated as little as possible by the intermediary delivery service (the Record Label and the Media). I'm (probably understandably) less keen on the idea of the purity of the communication of art than you, sir duke. If you're making your own meanings anyway, it doesn't seem to me to be that important. A minor point. If I mention Belle and Sebastian here, can I not be told off for going off-topic, please :-)? But yeah, as Tom waits once said, the obsession's in the chasing and not the apprehending... ah, but this is what i found so special about B&S, the very fact that i'd kind of given up hoping that such music WOULD affect me in this way. Me too. I genuinely believed I had grown too old and fat and cynical and so the pleasure in finding Belle and Sebastian was immense. And so I also end up transferring to them my hopes and dreams for the perfect pop group. A pop group who can inspire the kind of creativity which the Sex Pistols did. As I said in my previous post, this is probably unfair and expecting too much. But, BUT, I know how far pop music has inspired me to look at my own life as something more than time to be filled in before it all ends, I know how far pop has helped me to try to be creative in the way I act and think and feel. And I know that pop can do this on a massive scale (it just so happens that most of the bands which did these things for me happen to have been deep, deep underground). And I think that B&S have the potential to be such a band. Which is why I'm desperate to see them do everything they can to take that chance, to make it happen. And that definitely means finding a new way to deal with the music industry which flattens and deadens its product, inevitably aims at the existing mainstream. Here's my favourite B&S moment, from the time I was living in London, last year: It was a Saturday night and I'd been clubbing, so it was pretty late. I walked back from the tube station (in East London), tired but happy, because I'd had a good night and my Walkman was playing "Sinister". I started walking down my street and suddenly in the street lights I saw a fox! I stopped and watched it for a while, and it must have noticed me then, because it looked up at me. It didn't run away. We stood there watching each other for a while, then it scuttled off again, between the parked cars, and crossed the street to the park.
