Sinister: hoping for isobel's recovery

hi all, well i am here in chicago already for the show on monday and all i can say is that i hope isobel is well for the show. i am beginning to have major doubts and i think i am going to be heartbroken come monday. can someone please e- mail me right away if they find out the show is cancelled? i only get sinister in digest form and won't find out for a while after the official post is made. i might be able to change my flight and come back early. i am set to stay until tuesday afternoon. since it is a $25 charge to change my ticket, i think i will stay anyways until tuesday, but i would like to know as soon as possible if the show is going to be cancelled. i came a LONG way today for this, and i want her to feel better so i can see them. But, Belle & Sebastian are a unique sort of band, I think. And that's what makes them -- and their music -- so special. Who knows, really, what the decision-making process was last night? I am sure that Isobel's health and well-being must have been the main thing, followed by the rest of the band's comfort level with perfoming without an integral part of the group, all the while worried about her. They must have felt that it would have been detrimental to the music and the band to go on, or they certainly would have. I can tell you that everyone we met from the band looked as disappointed as the fans -- No, more so... hell, THEY traveled THOUSANDS of miles and now feel they've let people down. Not to mention they're stuck living in a bus... Despite my disappointment, I did have a fairly good time after all. Cinerama were really good (it's all taste of all sorts). We attended the aftershow in the upstairs bar and enjoyed Xavier's band, Clock Strikes Thirteen. There is some talent on this list!! (And thanks, Xavier, for the making the "mother and child reunion" possible :) It was great to meet listees and put faces to mail -- It is soooo nice to have someone come up and say, "Are you...." and just start talking away! We all crossed our fingers and hoped to meet again in DC and NY. I guess I'm trying to say, Belle and Sebastian have given us lots: wonderful music that people have laughed, cried and fallen in love to (and some are apparently shagging to), inspired a honey of a list that has everything from the ridiculous to the sublime (AND smut!), the opportunity to make friends and plan meet-ups and picnics... Let's just try to give them some of that back by trying to support them in what must be an awfully hard time of decisions (and disappointments) for them. They deserve a little more than someone yelling "fuck you" and the other crap poor Chris had to take, as if they did something awful on purpose. I find this extremely inconsiderate on > Belle and Sebastians part, I would have thought they would have had more > concerns for there LOYAL FANS, don't get me wrong I hope Isobel gets well as > soon as possible but just perhaps notifing the venue a day before the > concert > was to be cancelled would have been nice. okay, i hate to start fights or even contribute to disagreements, but i've got to say that this is not being fair to the band or jeepster or especially isobel. for crying out loud, i'm sure she didn't ask to be put in the hospital in the middle of their first north american tour. it's not like there's a plot to make kids sad by promising a visit from their favourite band and then cancelling at the last minute. poor isobel is sick and in the hospital, and the others can't very well leave her lying in a bed in phila while they go off and continue the shows. several people have been a bit nasty about this whole sad situation, saying that somehow the band owes it to people to play a show, whether or not one member is missing. i don't blame them for not wanting to play without isobel, and while i would like to say that "the show must go on, they could play without her" it's totally unfair because the bad have their own reasons for making the decision they have. i doubt they're oblivious to the fact that a lot of people have made big plans focussing on their shows, but it's not about us fans. as much as i would have loved to see any part of the band tonight, i'd be terribly sad if they forced themselves to play while their hearts were breaking for poor isobel. yes, some people drove long distances and totally rearranged their lives to have a chance to see belle and sebastian just once, there were long plane rides and car rides and much money spent on planning this event, but you know what? they didn't ask you to commit yourself in that way. they don't owe you a show even if you walked over on water from australia. you can't expect a band to schedule shows in every single city where there are fans, so of course some people will have to travel. some people also pay higher rent to have the benefit of living in the city. deal with it. i was thrilled enough that a canadian date was even considered, and for people like ben here to say that they need to be compensated somehow for their effort is just disgusting. have a little concern and consideration. although i didn't get to see the band tonight, i did get to meet a whole bunch of fabulous people, drink plenty of tonic water, inhale too much secondhand smoke, share hilarious stories, watch people get drunk, stuff 5 people in the backseat of a cab, take photos like a mad tourist, and i also experienced the infectious obsession created by stripping russian midgets. maybe the reason i'm not angry at the band at all is because firstly, who can help being sick? and secondly, i had a great time with the sinisterines. the venue was unable to be notified a day ahead of time because the setback only happened the night before. the band seems to have their prorities right, thinking of isobel first and themselves second, and not worrying about the shows. yeah, i'm really sad and disappointed that i can't see belle and sebastian, i've waited a long time for this and got so many hopes up, booked the entire weekend off work so i could indulge in pre- and post- show festivities, but hey, it's not the end of the world, i met some great people, i had funfunfun, and that's that. so please stop saying that because you invested x amount of time and money and because you're a loyal fan that they should be thinking of you. nope, wrong. they should think about isobel and themselves and hope that being in an american hospital is not costing them too much money. can you tell that i'm pissed off at people being so mean? grrr, jessicaxo ps. the 'xo' at the end of my name is like a kiss and a hug, not my last name. just (ahem) in case there was any confusion (er, debbie?). +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Sinister: philadelphia debacle

dear friends, i'm here to share a little bit about what happened in philly and how it was terribly sad, but not a complete disaster. for me, anyway. forgive me if this is not too coherent. i'm valiantly trying to finish off all the beers left in my cooler . . . first off, i'm very grateful that i only had to drive about an hour to the troc. my heart really goes out to all of you who embarked on the pilgrimage from distant parts. cinerama were ok. they were still soundchecking when the doors opened and it was a sorry sight to see, somehow. for the first time ever i looked up at the stage and said to myself "these guys are too old to be doing this." but david can still unleash the occasional weddoes triple-time riff. occasionally. that's really all i expect from an opener, not to mention a band doing its second gig ever. ok, so cinerama wraps up at nine forty-five, or therabouts. belle and sebastian's stuff is set up and we wait. this is expected. i tremble with anticipppppation. there are some sloppy-drunk assholes at one end of the balcony. one of them pours beer over his head. what a genius. at the other end are two guys in pressed shirts with yuppie beards that i saw cutting in line earlier. one of them rises, leans over the balcony and points demonstratively at his watch. i have the very un-cardie impulse to disfigure him permanently. at about ten twenty, a bespectacled unruly-haired, lanky gentleman with scottish accent says something to the effect of "a band member has taken ill and has been taken to the hospital. as we speak, the band is trying to figure something out." i'm thinking, "there were those who said isobel did not look well in boston. shit. what's to figure out? either they play without her, or they don't play at all. oh shit." in retrospect, the band was probably trying to resolve contractual issues. at about ten fifty, chris geddes strides onto the stage and stands at the center microphone. his announcement: "isobel is ill. she's in the hospital. we were hoping she would return in time to do the gig, but she couldn't make it. we would like nothing better than to play. we came here for no other reason than to do these gigs. i sympathise with those of you who traveled long distances to be here. i'm sorry . . ." after i've had some sleep, i will email the band with an apology for the reaction of the crowd. thank you, chris for making the announcement yourself, and not sending a roadie or something. i wanted to give you a hug, but an arrest wasn't really a suitable conclusion to this evening either. i don't really understand why the band could not play the set, but i also don't know what happened with isobel. i sincerely hope she gets well soon. we have to respect the band's decision. if they had played, their minds would surely have been elsewhere. but the evening was not a total loss because i finally got to meet some fellow sinisterites. we all headed for julie's house, blasted "tigermilk" and drowned our sorrows in the proverbial pint or seven. there were also unspeakable mutations of several mr. potato heads. and the cutest, elastic, weightless kitten prancing about. i think a wonderful night of commiseration was had by all. i got to meet sweet emily who was in boston, was planning on DC and has tickets for both new york shows. wow. also in attendance: lovely jess foxinasnow who managed to snag the very last blue shirt. in her size, no less. (i bought three. hate me. they're gifts.) my deepest empathy goes to the wonderful gentleman from wheeling, west virginia. happy trails. you invested (and deserved) more than i. i didn't really catch everybody's name, but i enjoyed your company. there's a lot more to gigs than just seeing the band play. you prepare the day before. you lay out your clothes and arrange everything so you can leave as soon as you possibly can. you get to wait in line and anticipate with like-minded folk. i've learned to regard the lower back cramps you get waiting the headlining act as the highest level of ecstasy. the post-ungig party was a wonderful event. so how can i say the evening was disappointing? what about the rest of the tour? we're all waiting with baited breath. i have tickets to the 11/2 nyc show. i don't see how the toronto show can proceed. i'm worried that the band is so traumatized by this mess that they'll never tour again. say it ain't so . . . addendum: the troc is a wonderful space, but their logistics suck. they're abysmal. i'm ashamed to live here. this happened at the elliott smith show, but i thought they would have learned their lesson. why can't they dispense will call tickets before the show. there is no reason for people to not be admitted until ten pm for an eight pm show. it's an outrage, frankly. people flew into philly, had legitimate ticket reservations and did not see a minute of live music. it's truly reprehensible. fuck you, troc. you have a great place, but you're morons. why should we bother? and that's not even talking about the refund situation. we understand that this is an unfortunate situation that nobody wanted, but they have to have a proper procedure in place. there are people who paid cash at authorized ticket outlets and received a voucher. this voucher was confiscated at venue entry, and their legitimate owners have no proof of ticket purchase. for me, $12.50 is not worth a trip to philly which is what's required for the cash refund. this sucks. shit. there's still beer left. anybody want to teach me how to "shotgun" a can? belle and sebastian don't have any songs sad enough for this situation. i'm listening to tindersticks. Well, this is one unfortunate Noo Yawker that made the trek to Philly - I won't bore you with the painful details of the car ride to and fro.....or the 2 hour wait outside the Troc.......I will just say that I believe Belle and Sebastian could have shown a lot more care for their fans, and that the fans in return could have been kinder. There were sins on both sides. Having said that, I now am reduced to begging for a ticket to the New York gigs, if they indeed are going to proceed. Please e-mail me if I can purchase a spare! My best lyric-mishearing was from "A Century of Elvis". Instead of: "How Elvis is supposed to be still alive" I heard: "How Elvis is supposed to be sterilized". I thought the "E Files" videos were pornos, and Elvis didn't have any reaction to them because he was castrated or something. But I was wrong. On the cancelled Philly show: I think the band owed it to everyone to play without her. But I think everyone would've preferred anything to nothing. I would rather hear four songs with David & an acoustic guitar than have my $12.50 back. Sinister: Sinister cancelling

hello... i am one of the unfortunate mass who attended the cancelled show in philly last night...i will probably be disappointed yet again, but is the d.c. show sold out? probably. and does anyone have tickets they will not be using? probably not. but i thought i'd ask...next i may try phoning matador and seeing what i can find out there...but i'm sure this will be yet another fruitless attempt.
