<fontfamily><param>times</param><bigger>Hello Sinisterlistees, While doing my usual morning check of the 100+ emails I receive every day, I stumbled across an old review of Lazy Line Painter Jane (well, if 1997 is old) on the <<www.salonmagazine.com> archives by NICK HORNBY!!! who I think has a brilliant, lazy style that manages to reach right inside and make you laugh or think, especially in his new one About A Boy. So this is my disclaimer: I CHECKED THE ARCHIVES!! So if this is there, I missed it. If it's not, well then. Being Canadian, I think Hornby's wickedly irreverent portrayal of modern England is quite funny. And he does a well done review of B+S.. By the way, I'll let you guys know when I receive the french sessions tape from the lovely Philippe. Enjoy the review. By the way, if anyone knows which drunken poet opening for B&S show Nick refers to, email me privately please. xoAlexandra </bigger><color><param>0000,0000,8080</param> BY NICK HORNBY</color><bigger> | <bold>Gosh,</bold> but Britain's got loud all of a sudden. You can hardly hear yourself think at the moment, amidst the sounds of crashing and banging and weeping and wailing and self-proclamation and accusation and electric guitars. The noise started on May 1st, when Tony Blair was elected Prime Minister: Blair's landslide victory changed the national mood literally overnight. The raucous celebrations lasted well into the summer, and even Britain's notoriously conservative national press -- somewhat perversely, given how much work they had put in to preserve John Major's exhausted, deeply unpopular and increasingly sleazy party -- started tapping its toes discreetly in the corner, like moms and dads at the end of rock'n'roll films. Blair's approval rating shot through the roof, and Britain suddenly discovered that, contrary to all our suspicions, we were a young country, brimful of talent and vision and energy. Those of us who had got used to the idea that we were an awful, senile country, full of reactionary old farts who hadn't read a novel in 30 years and who still disapproved of the length of Ringo's hair, couldn't take the pace. By July, I felt like I wanted to stop partying and go and have a sit-down. But there was no let-up. Our cricket and football teams began the summer by winning handsomely and unexpectedly, victories for which Tony Blair seemed obscurely responsible -- something to do with young people being better than old people at sports, presumably. The Oasis album came out amidst a great deal of ear-splitting ballyhoo, and Noel Gallagher was one of the first to be invited to 10 Downing Street for one of Blair's occasional artsy parties, another indication of fundamental change: The only rock 'n' roller that the previous administration had been able to invite to parties was Andew Lloyd Webber. (Lloyd Webber, incidentally, made vague threats about leaving the country in the event of a Labour victory, a threat that may well have been responsible for the size of Blair's majority, but scandalously he never went anywhere, as far as we know.) And then, of course, there was the Diana thing, about which there is only one observation I wish to make here: Whatever else it was or wasn't, it was certainly loud. Sometimes you get the impression that we have turned ourselves into one huge braying mob, bursting with nervous energy and Adrenalin, looking for an excuse to make even more noise than we are already making. Recently, as another <underline><color><param>0000,0000,ffff</param>Salon correspondent noted</color></underline>, it was poor Louise Woodward who got the treatment. I've been listening to Belle and Sebastian, a ramshackle, cute and only occasionally fey folk-pop band who have spent the summer releasing four-track EPs with quirky names and classy sleeves: "Dog On Wheels," "Lazy Line-Painter Jane," "3, 6, 9 Seconds of Light." Belle and Sebastian have not, as far as I am aware, described themselves as "the best fooking (sic) band in the world," unlike the rest of their peers, and nor should they: A recent sold-out show I saw in London was a shambles, and to this member of the audience an irritating, as opposed to adorable, shambles. One of the support acts was a rambling and very drunk poet, and the boys and girls themselves took their own sweet time tuning up and messing about between each number. It took a good five minutes before they deigned to play anything at all. But quirkiness is a much rarer commodity in this new, brash Britain than it was. We used to be rather good at it -- generally, we took the view that if we couldn't compete with the Yanks properly, then we'd refuse to play the game by acting daft. This new Brit feistiness, however, has meant that everyone wants a shot at the mainstream: Self-confidence is in, and self-deprecating charm is out -- almost. Luckily, Belle and Sebastian have charm in glorious abundance, and "A Century of Elvis," the last track on the new "Lazy Line-Painter Jane" EP, is surely the most charmed you'll be all year. "A Century of Elvis" is in effect a short story, spoken in broad Scottish over a gorgeous, aching, jingle-jangle guitar and a couple of tootling organ notes; the story is about a period in the narrator's life when Elvis -- the very famous one -- visited him in his flat every evening. It's one of those rare pieces of work that you love partly because you have no idea where it came from: I haven't heard much recently that describes Elvis poking around a post office van, apparently contemplating whether to drive it away. It's the accumulation of detail that makes the track -- there's actually some deceptively fine writing going on here, although the band probably wouldn't thank me for pointing it out. In one passage the narrator wonders whether it was Elvis' love for squirrels that attracted him to their particular leafy suburb; another concerns the great man's impassive consumption of a video entitled the 'The E-Files," about unlikely Presley sightings. You end up smiling at the simple joy taken in picking up an idea and running with it -- if you can make anything out in the mix, which is, needless to say, pretty crappy. Oh, and if you love the tune but get tired of the story, the jingle-jangle is recycled for "A Century of Fakers," the song that kicks off "3, 6, 9 Seconds of Light." Maybe you have to be living here to appreciate just how welcome this kind of egoless homecooked whimsy is at the moment, but if you've heard the Oasis album, or seen the mass Disteria on TV, you can probably guess. Hey you all, B&S were yesterday at the Botanique in Brussels. The show was sold out and very good. Here's the song list. 1. ? 2. the rollercoaster ride 3. paperboat 4. it could have been a brilliant carreer 5. sleep the clock around 6. i know where the summer goes 7. the wrong girl 8. the state I am in 9. tbwtas 10. like dylan in the movies 11. seymour stein 12. belle and sebastian 13. get me away from here, i'm dying 14. ? the question marks refer to songs i don't know. I've tried to track them back through the lyrics, and haven't succeded. So they could be newbies or covers. Maybe some people can help out, so here are bits of lyrics from the unknown songs : 1. starts with "there's a portray? in the backroom?..." or something like that at some point : "you're still falling..." 14. starts with the organ, pretty groovy. the chorus says the same phrase three times "yoouuu could've known" or something like that, and then "but i forget very well". I happen to have a recording of this show, it's a minidisc of very good quality. You can hear all the instruments very well. Stereo. 70 minutes long (whole show, no encores). I'd be happy to make other people benefit from this, but unfortunately I really don't have neither the time nor the equipment to start dubbing at an industrial rate... So I'll trade it with other stuff from B&S or other artists (divine comedy, pavement, mogwai, pram, stereolab...), but stuff ** on minidisc ** in priority. Dearest Sinister Mates, I make no bones of contention to you all as to the very family oriented lifestyle that we have concocted,but I must now go down on my knees and prostrate myself to the collective Sinister mailing list. I am in dire need of a ticket to see the November second show. There are prospects, but they are slim. There are promises, but they are pie-crust promises. There is nothing that is written in stone, that can help me more than delusional daydreaming. Is there anyone out there, any kind sould that has a ticket for the November second show that must, for medical reasons, because they have died, or because you have just decided to hate Belle and Sebastian not go to the show? Sinister: I'm in a mess, I'm in a dress...

Hi list, This is just to tell you what I thought about the B&S gig in Paris two days ago, at La Cigale... I must confess that I thought, before the gig, that it could be disappointing : La Cigale is a big venue, the gig had been sold out for several weeks, the price of tickets on the black market was about 300 francs (30 quids)... And sometimes, french audience are not very respectful for artists and they keep talking laughing and drinking during songs... It could have been like the gig in Nottingham, fot those who were there : too crowdy, too big, too hot. But it wasnt. It was definitely crowdy, yes, and we couldnt even find a seat upstairs. So we had to stand on the ground floor, a few meters from the scene. And the gig was brilliant, once again. They played songs from their three albums, from the EPs, and they even played some new songs, especially Lord Anthony... They seemed happy to be on stage, happy to play their music. And the audience were quiet and silent during these seconds when Stuart's voice is the only thing we can hear, or even between two songs. If angels could sing, they would have Stuart's voice... The audience were silent and calm enough to make me forget the crowd. Friends of mine, who are b&s fans as well, have been disappointed however : they said that if they had stayed at home listening to the record, it would have been the same. They even said that the band was too shy, too twee, that there was no communication with the audience. "No soul", they said... They can say anything, I dont mind. This gig was magic. But now it's over. And I'm in a mess. Do you find it normal to drown in some kind of depression after such a gig? I dont know. I cant help thinking that I wont have the opportunity to see B&S again... maybe later, in a year, but it seems so far away from here... Just a last word to thank all the young, tall, elegant rich kids who could make it at La Fourmi for the meet-up before the gig. You were very nice. There were many listees and other french popkids. I wish I could have had the time to chat longer but I was very busy trying to say hello to everyone, finding a ticket for Niall and his girlfriend, looking for David and Katrina... By the way, special thanks to them : it was a pleasure to give out Jeepster catalogues in the venue with you. I tryed to find you after the gig but you seemed to have disappeared! Last special thanks to Niall, to Brian, to Julien, Eric, and, last but not least, Philippe... Well, that's it. Then it just got dirty, sort of like one of those dreams Murdoch has. Why don't people tell us their dirty dreams, I've had a cracker about Linda Bellingham, ask Honey. Speaking of new songs, I have no idea how this "Lord Anthony" song goes at all. I've never heard it! I thought I'd have a stab at the lyrics anyway. Sinister: Disco baby, sexy baby, hot!

Hello happy revellers, For once NME made me laugh today. The little bit in thrills entitled "Carnage Fuckers" about riots at B&S shows. Also the Technics advert which said "Something colossal this way comes. The rock Godzilla of all beats. Spewing out the phantom loops of the 14th Century Sunday Social. A burning beast of mediaeval madness. Two minds melted into one. Welcome to the Chemical Brothers wall of sound. It lives and breathes but who will tame it?" It's powerful stuff and I was so impressed that I've bought a dozen. Can anyone shed any light on the strange rumour that the old Captain Bird's Eye was sacked and replaced with the new "hunky" version, because it came to light that the old Cap'n was, in fact, a woman. Seeing as how my own father was cast as the good Captain in an office looky-likey competition, I have a vested interest in knowing the truth.
