- hey kids, not been able to post for a few days, as i went home for the weekend and its taken me this long to read through everything you guys have written, but i wouldn't have thought you missed me too much. i'm troubled today as i do actually have some bad stuff that happened in my life i need to share with someone and i did think that the list would be my forum, but now that so many people have complained about being forced to be agony aunts/uncles i'm a little more reluctant. bugger it, i'm going to tell you anyway, its not that traumatic and you don't have to read this bit if you don't want to. friday night:- i got dumped thats it, in simple terms, but, of course nothing is ever as simple as that, we had only been going out for about a month, but as has been discussed before you can very attatched to someone in much less time than that. the thing is, we get on really, really well and have the sort of stuff in common that makes you think, shit, i could spend a long time with this person. in addition, there is an immense physical attraction, despite the fact that he isn't my type at all (he doesn't have nearly a good enough haircut) to my mind, logically, all the evidence points to us being together, but according to him, apparently not. the most annoying thing being that i can actually see the points he has to make about why we shouldn't go out with each other, namely that 1) we've both just started university and its all happened so quickly that we really should settle down first before embarking on a serious relationship 2) its only a matter of weeks since he split up with his girlfriend of three (THREE!!) years and all this is far too weird 3)he claims that i like him more than he could ever like me because his mind works too logically and he can never fall in love with anyone, particularly because it would get in the way of his band well, fuck that, (sorry i am a foul-mouthed bint when i'm emotional) look at me i've just outlined my inner turmoil in bullet-points, and he thinks he's more detached than me!!! anyway, i had a chat with him yesterday, during which we both had to fight very hard to resist getting off with each other, and we're going to be friends with the possibility of casual sex later when we're not too attatched to one another. i tried to explain to him that could never quite work because of how desperately lonely i get when i'm on my own (i know thats sad, but thats another issue), but he reckons that i can still have him for companionship and occasional physical fulfilment, although technically we won't be going out. i am very confused. you all have my sincerest apologies for this post, i was just hoping that someone out there might understand or have some advice or even be able to fill the void. b+s content i passed on a tape of tigermilk and sinister today to someone who i think will appreciate it - the conversion continues. stay beautiful, fiona ******there is no true love, just a finely tuned jealousy***** +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Sinister: Scenester in denial

Hello all- Attempt one at sending this last night failed, so here goes attempt #2. I just returned from the wonderful Stereophonics show at the lovely Boston Paradise club. I saw an old friend outside of the club after the show and talked with her for the first time in ages. She's a fellow BU student, and has been a good friend to me these past 2 years, but for some reason, this semester she's been blowing me off. Tonight, she ended our conversation with the statement "I hate scenester kids like you." This really upset me and got me to do a lot of thinking on the cold walk home. Is there something wrong with introducing yourself to people you see on a near-weekly basis at parties, record stores, or shows? I knew very few when I arrived in Boston, so if I hadnt learned to overcome my fear of talking to random people, I'd still be sitting in my room all night playing computer games. I dont consider these people close friends, although I will admit that a few of them have become really good friends of mine (hi Teri) through the years. Or is it not that that makes one a scenester? Is it because my tastes in music have evolved over the years? I'll admit, 4 years ago I spent my days skateboarding and listening to too much of the local ska and punk bands, but I feel that that has shaped and molded me to who I am today. I dont deny ever listening to any of that, and there are a few bands that I still play and go see when they come to town. Does that make me a scenester? And now dress. So my taste in clothes has changed over the year. Where I grew up in CT you look either 2 ways: ghetto or prep. I came to Boston and realized that there is more than that, and over the years have come to prefer to tapered polyster Levis to the khakis of past, youth L t-shirts to the size L skate company shirts of past, etc. Is maturation in any way bad? I'm still the same person, I havent adopted some cocky attitude in the process (although I joke around with a rock star attitude at points). So after writing this, I cant determine why she would hate a person for any of those attributes. Maybe I'm defining scenester wrong, or maybe she's just jealous. I dont know. All I do know is that it hurts to lose someone that was once a close friend. Sorry for that rant, but feel free to provide any insight. On another note, it is nice to see that some people on the list are getting into bands such as Rainer Maria and Joan of Arc. I'm not a big Rainer Maria fan, but I do really enjoy Joan of Arc and the other bands that Tim Kinsella has been involved with. I cant see at all how theyd be related to Belle and Sebastian, but they are quite interesting and do a great job at playing a very unique style of music. I saw them live this summer and recommend their concerts to any who havent seen them. My good friend Matt Sbardella, who is also on this list, yet I've never seen post (hi Matt!) recently got me into a rather good Australian band and I was curious if anyone else was into them. They're called the Lucksmiths and they will be touring the US soon, so if they're coming to your town, do check them out. They're a pretty much acoustic trio with beautiful tales of rainy days and barroom love. Do check them out if you've got the chance. Well, I have work at 8 am and a midterm to study for, so I shall be off. Sinister: Flaming lips

Dear Listees, i am very disturbed by what I saw last night at the Flaming Lips/Hefner gig. Hefner were brilliant (of course) but the Lips were frightening- a drummer who wasn't there, a huge gong on stage , a hand puppet that looked like a nun, and the lead singer chasing sperm on the projected backdrop. I am supposed to review it for the Manchester Uni student paper but quite frankly I have no idea what to say without sounding like I took all the drugs. No B+S content but Hefener do have a nice line in badges which kind of makes up for it. Dear Sinister, Fluffosophy? Efluffience more likely. I know what I mean by that. I've just printed out over 100 pages on the printers.... teehee I AM ever so wicked. I'm desperately looking out for more stuff I can print. I know! I will print out The Lad Keefs super-duper Bellend Sebastian project, and the guitar tabs for songs by people of the same name! Damn, I don't have an unzipper. Bugger. I'll of course get Vic Godard round personally to teach me the hits of the Subway Sect though. Can you play Steps songs on a post punk guitar? Myself and a lady formerly of this parish are going to see Steps at G.A.Y. I'll scream for H, and lots of lesbians will probably tell me off for displaying THE FASCIST HETEROSEXUAL HEGEMONIC ORTHODOXY, MAN! Its not that really, I don't really fancy H from Steps... I think he's a little grinning Welsh chappy who bounces a lot. A Pop Tigger, in fact! Lisa from Steps likes it up the bum... if thats not Dr Freud saying SOMETHING about Gayism, I don't know what it is. I wonder why girls like it up the bum? I know why boys do, its because of boys bits being so placed...but anyway... I like to imagine that Slash might one day see the error of his ways, get a pension plan and decide to become an orthodontist. The former bass player from The Marmalade (O bla dee oh bla da, or something. Christ that McCartney's responsible for a lot of crap), whose name escapes me at the minute, manages a branch of a temp agency in East London. Sinister: say la la love you

Or something like that. I've only heard the one Chemistry Experiment song, Disco Song, but it's rather nice, so for that reason everyone should go and see them. Oh, and I'm sure they're lovely as well. I have a slight Belle and Sebastien story. But none one of these ones where you have a t-shirt and someone comes up and talks to you about it, and then five minutes later you're shagging rather hard. Just that I finally got round to buying If You're Feeling Sinister on cd (previous copy was a tape) and the bloke in the rather amusingly named Left Legged Pineapple said that it was a good choice. I think he got a bit embarrassed after that as my girlfriend started to laugh. Maybe if she hadn't been there we would have gone back to his place....... Did buy some smooth cds from there though. Finally got round to buying the Witness album, as well as a couple of Arabstrap albums, and Summerteeth by Wilco. Don't know who it was, but some delightful little person mentioned Dr Who, but ever so briefly though. Shame, as this was clearly one of the best programmes ever made. It went a bit downhill when they made that new film though, as that was a bit poor. There's rumours that there's going to be another one. Hmm.... I need a new job, and soon. Have to get away from students. They're really starting to annoy me. I got told of by a mature student yesterday for not smiling back at her when she smiled at me. I'm sure it's not in my contract to smile. The place is sooooo depressing. Looks like I'm going to go to a temping agency and see if I can find somethings to see me through to next August or so. Anyway. Angel delight and cheese on toast, with hot pepper sauce you understand, to make and eat. I was watching when Kerry relayed the following dialogue, ---friend: what was up with that boy you were dancing with? me: which one? friend: the one you were dancing really close to me: which one? friend: the one that was all over you me: which one? friend: i think he was wearing red me: oh. that one. --- and had to stop and think just what color shirt I was wearing saturday night. Surely there was dancing, and thus being such more than a few mutual grooves turned to touch. We were laughing while the drunken jitterbug grew to grope. An then after a timeless moment of full body smile we retired to a standing room conversation piece. There was rampant eye contact and plenty of she flipping the pages of the ribald artful imagery tome by some famous haute coutour fotog type who's name i might remember if it weren't for the full burbon swoon. Dancing's a bunch of fun, and a favored form of nonverbal communication, primarily physical-spiritual with a bawdily beautiful underbelly. But it's not nice to dance and dash without a respectful chat that determines if there is some spark of intrigue and compatibility with this dashing other you met across some crowed room and were moved to entrain with. The truely chic display respect over sleaze as a matter of course. Musically speaking, any new england folks going to olivia tremor control in providence next week? Sinister: Revenge of the lawn

Hello everyone, I have to start by saying i don't agree with Nick about Morvern Callar. I thought it was a great book, and so were Alan Warners other efforts come to think of it - These Dememented Lands and The Sopranos. I think they are making the Sopranos into a film (its nothing to do with that programme on channel 4!) or did i just make that up? I've just finished reading a book of short stories called Revenge of the Lawn by Richard Brautigan which i also recommend to anyone on the list who hasn't read it. Its great to just carry around everywhere you go because the stories are so short that you will be able to read a whole one in any slight break you might have. I keep meaning to send my nominations for Laura Llews Litarory list but i never seem to get around to it. I definitly will do soon! I had a shock when I read Kevin Parkers message saying he is from Shrewsbury - a fellow Salopian who likes Belle and Sebastian - I never thought i would see the day! Shame about Shrewsbury Town football club though, look at us languishing third from bottom of the third division. I always wondered what it would be like to support a team that gets relegated to the conference, i might be about to find out. I read a funny story in the Guardian the other day. It said that a man in Brazil who was in massive debt chopped his own hand off to claim insurance money. He did this by telling the police that while he was on his way to buy an ice cream, a gang attacked him, chopping his hand off with an axe. However, police became suspicious because they could not understand why the man would want ice cream on a cold winter night, brazilian gangs tend to use guns rather than axes, and the man could not explain where he had got a cloth from to wrap the hand in. So the man addmitted that he had in fact paid his mate 100 dollars to chop his hand off. However, i thought the best bit was a quite from the mans wife who said that: "It was a stupid thing to do. We are still in debt but now he only has one hand." It made me laugh anyway! You would think he would think up a decent story if he was going to chop his hand off! Anyway, i think i've probably been going on for far too long now, so i must go and do some work Bye!
