At the moment I am listening to the Roky Erickson cd, Never Say Goodbye. It's one of the most genuinely beautiful cd's i have heard in a long, long time. I think all of you should go out and get it this very instant. It's got that lovely rough quality, being home recordings and such. It is simply undescribable, unearthly almost. Pure Unforced beauty. It makes me want to be in love or something. Anyone else heard it? I bet you'll agree with me, and if you don't, then I'm sure you've got no soul. There's been a lot of talk about frats and sorrorities. I saw some documentary about sorrorities on t.v. recently. It was about how they were racist and evil and how most college students don't really like the frat boys and sorrority girls. They had interviews with ex-sorrority members, like some kind of AA meeting. They also had interviews with pledges and members, and to be quite honest, they seemed a bit warped to me. It was like some kind of cult, with their secret handshakes and ceremonies and rituals. I'm sure they're not all like that, but it is quite sketchy... It also brought up a really good point about the anti-intellectual phenomena in america. You go to a place of learning so you can get drunk and sleep with frat boys? It's only my opinion, but you must be a bit insecure to feel the need to join these places. Like you're worried you can't find friends if you don't. Incedentally, I was very unpopular in high school, so perhaps I'm just bitter and biased. Wait a minute... no I'm not. I've discovered that my cat likes B&S, especially If you're feeling sinister. I was playing it yesterday and he strutted over and plopped himself next to the speakers and started purring. He also does that when I play Joni Mitchell albums or Elvis movies. He thinks of Calvin like a parent does a child, and it makes him angry to see things like Calvin pissing on various images, Calvin and/or Hobbes stoned or drunk, and the like. No, I wrote it all wrong, I don't think being a victim of childhood bullying is something to aspire to, I was just trying to say i would like to look back and think it was a war of the cool vs the nerds, when it really wasn't, it was just a few people that picked on other people because they were different. I was bullied on and off mentally for three years until I found solace with a few other people like me and we stuck together. Perhaps Keith would like to expand on this, as not only is he a big WHO fan, he is also well-known bully, having given Rodd lines outside the science block once. Ha ha, just my little joke, I'm sure Keith wasn't a bully. Otherwise he wouldn't be a highly succesful computer boffin, because most bullies end up in prison, or they get married and have kids and calm down, or they become acid casualties. Sinister: Party Round At Mine Tonight

Ay up kids. Ay up. We're having a bar-b-q (as Sainsbury's Homebase spell it) and big old booze up garden party tonight!!! And it's going to piss down (probably)!!! Ah well. I've been put in charge of the music. I like doing that. Thing is, I always like to put 'my' music on (ie B&S, Elliott Smith, Hood etc etc) because I think I'm doing everyone a favour by introducing them to fantastic music, but nobody else sees it that way. I put on all the faster, more upbeat B&S songs, to help the party SWING (hem hem), but someone always seems to end up taking my tape out and putting the Stereophonics (or someone) on. BASTARDS. I'm going to watch that stereo like a hawk. This is my first post by the way. What's that? Oh, you had guessed. Sos. I have actually been on the list for AGES, but I used to get the digest at work (and I sold my ass out to the private sector, a company I will not mention for shame). Anyway, I kept missing my digest, and with honey's help, I found out that the company were BLOCKING my sinister digest because or your filthy filthy language. Naughty. But I've subscribed on this account, where we can all swear as much as we want. But let's not, eh? There may be children present. I'm off. Oh, could you all pray for sunshine tonight? Cheers. I think that this sort of class separation is over emphasized, but it does exist. And it is usually propigated by teachers, who are supposed be impartial in these situations. However, throughout my entire American public school experience students were always given preference due to their abilities. Yes, the jocks were separated out, but so were the "gifted" children (for some reason I was put in with these people). Those who were given preferential treatment usually managed to find support from their peers and teachers. However a large cross section of students are always left out when this sort of thing happens and then you get people like my brother who doesn't really fit into any category and as a result becomes a part of the mass of people deemed unremarkable by the teachers/administration. My brother is pretty stable, but it's this group that the people like the trenchcoat brigade came from. Then again i went to a school that is technically considered an inner city school (the crackhouses were a few streets down) and thus didn't have much of the affluence that places like Columbine had. Also, when I went to high school, the big problem was finding babies in dumpsters and park toilets and not postal like shootings. (but i do know all the words >to the theme tune). well, i'm not american, but my (canadian) high school has been compared to a bad american sitcom many, many times. not only do we have completely segregated cliques of people, but there are also names put on the places they sit in school at lunch! the bottom floor of my school is a square, and there is one hallway that leads off of it with the theatre and music rooms. this hallways is nicknamed "loser hall" since it's where the so-called "artsy" kids hang out. it's really terrible- if any crossing-over happens between groups, it's talked about all over school ("Like, you just like don't like do that!"), that is, if it's anyone important enough......the main differences between my school and bayside( the saved by the bell school) are that instead of using the "geeky" kids to do homework, and then make fun of, the "cool" kids just ignore them completely. and instead of football being the cool sport to play, it's hockey. oh, and we aren't friends with our principal. erika xox +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". hi all, well, as I mentioned a week ago, 'Alternative Nation' on MTV UK will be presenting a Belle & Sebastian special on Tuesday 29th June, here is the press release ... *** MTV's Alternative Nation presents A BELLE AND SEBASTIAN VIDEO SPECIAL Midnight Tuesday June 29th 1999 As a warm-up to the long-awaited re-release of Tigermilk on July 12th, MTV's Alternative Nation gives UK viewers the chance to see all of the promotional videos produced to date by the band known as BELLE AND SEBASTIAN from midnight on the evening of Tuesday 29th June 1999. The show will also include tracks from THE GENTLE WAVES and LOOPER both bands comprising of various B&S members. In the past these videos have had limited TV coverage and given the feedback to Alternative Nation after airing them on the show, many viewers and fans of the band were unaware of there very existence. So we are pleased to present all of their tracks together in one show for your viewing pleasure. It will also feature the first TV screening of the six-minute mini-documentary recorded by the band late last year entitled 'Up Our Own Arses'. This show is also the first in a series of monthly shows featuring tracks from one band/artist, with an hour of rare and classic videos. These shows will follow the first Alternative Nation of the month. The voice travelled through the East Sussex night straight into the attentive conscience of the hosts and overlords of this, the first musical meeting of minds, ideas and chalet-hopping. 'We will return! We will re-live! We will get our deposits back!' And they were right. 'All Tomorrow's Parties' is the spiritual successor to Bowlie. The same location, the same quality of bands, DJ's and production, the same high standards of hygiene and once again, the only festival where you can have a lie-in, watching cable on your own TV, in your own apartment, with its own shower and its own toilet. Over twenty bands will follow the legacy pioneered by the likes of Belle 7 Sebastian, Mercury Rev, Jon Spencer and Mogwai. The line-up, performing in the two indoor venues, will be announced over the next two weeks and as before, there will be several surprise guests and secret acts performing impromptu sets. Five-a-side football, the swimming pool, and the uninhabited endless beaches are all there for your enjoyment, even the crazy golf and go-karts will be open this time round.
