Hello, Sinister. I should be celebrating. I have just managed to become a student again. The University *finally* let me know that they were offering me a place as a postgraduate, on the Thursday of Freshers Week. Right up until the last minute, I was thinking I'd have to go and get a *proper* job somewhere. Instead, not only am I a student again, I even get an office to work in. Admittedly, I have to share it with numerous other people, but I like it anyway; it's a tiny room in a big old Edinburgh building, at the bottom of a steep spiral staircase (the internal phone book lists it as "Spiral Stair Room"). I now have three more years to learn how to be a Proper Archaeologist -- even though I've already been studying for four, it seems like I haven't learnt a thing. I am very grateful to all those people who have been discussing kids' TV shows. It's been about fifteen years since I forgot the name of Battle Of The Planets, and I've been trying to remember what it was called ever since. Actually, I can't remember much about it at all, except that my mother thought it was rubbish, as it only had the one bad guy. Still, it was better than Ulysses, not to mention Thundercats. I never trusted Thundercats after I continued watching through the credits one day and saw "Child Psychologist" listed (yes, *really*). You can tell I was an Annoyingly Clever child, because I knew (well, vaguely) what a Child Psychologist was. Really, though, there's one thing I have never doubted: the best kids show ever was "Mysterious Cities of Gold". It was Bluddy Great! Action, adventure, a big twist at the end, *and* it went on for months and months -- not to mention all the cool solar-powered machinery. All those other cartoon series that went on for months and months were a bit pants by comparison -- including, let's be honest, Belle and Sebastian. Small child with big dog? Girls' stuff, if you ask me. I noticed recently that a lot of these old shows are being released on video; presumably for the Student Market. I have the Willo-the-Wisp one, but I can never watch a lot at a time; it's too concentrated. After, say, three or four five-minute episodes, you start shouting GET THAT DAMN THEME TUNE AWAY FROM ME!!!! at the TV set. You can also get Bod on video, but Bod was *really* rubbish. Even *I* could draw Bod. When I was three, I could have drawn Bod. I admit, getting me to draw Farmer Barleymow is pushing it. But Bod's *easy*. Still thinking about cartoons -- I shall have to investigate the Powerpuff Girls, if the soundtrack is that good. The only time I've seen it was on a visit to a MacDonalds once, and the sound was turned off. I do like Dexter's Lab, though -- it's not just on satellite, CITV show it sometimes. One last thing, and something new to talk about (hopefully, it'll take your minds of genocide and other serious stuff of that ilk). Beards: a good thing or a bad thing? I woke up the other morning, looked in the mirror, and realised I had suddenly acquired one. Must be all that "not shaving" I've been doing lately. My girlfriend announced the other week that she wants us to split up; I think there may be a connection here. Any views on the goodness, badness or otherwise of beards gratefully accepted. Should I shave or should I no? (Bugger grammer; I couldn't resist that line). If it helps you contemplate: I have long, blond hair, but my beard is dark (it matches my single across-the-forehead eyebrow). I should send you a picture to help your deliberations, but I can't be arsed to get the scanner working; and anyway, it'd forever doom my chances of getting any List Crush votes. I could draw you a self-portrait, but I'd probably end up looking like Bod. I went last night to the show in Hollywood and it was excellent. I was able to get past the fact that it was only Mike (singer) and three 'other' guys. Those three other guys are pretty freaking good musicians and they pulled it off very well. On guitar was James Stevenson (ex-Generation X/Gene Loves Jezebel). Mike is an awesome performer and gives so much. I would recommend catching them if possible. It was so good to hear those songs live again. As for the box set, you can get each individual re-mastered disc from alarm.com or at record stores for about $20. Although with the box set Mike records any Alarm song you choose and plays it acoustically on disc. Prety cool if you're a big fan. not too long ago i remembered some one had asked how much the original tigermilk LP was. you know. the one that they made as a class project oh so many years ago. any way. I'm walking around . i strut into a local record store and check the inventory. flipping through several of the rare classic vinyl that many record stores have. and there it was. the original tigermilk LP. in a clear plastic bag. written in bold black letters across the top was the numbers $255.00. and i remember thinking"Wow. That a lot of milk." and i have no idea why i thought that. seems like the 12th was a bad day for a lot of people. forget the 13th. full moon and all. i got in from work yesterday morn.(i have a nite job.)and turned on the ol' picture box. it was one big jumble of things. I'm not sure if all this is right but what i got from the news was that two Israel soldiers were killed in a mob beating in the streets. then Israel started to pulverize the entire city with heavy missile weapons. then some one said that the two soldiers were assassins sent to kill certain people in the crowd.(i think they mentioned the militia) but the police that were there were trying to stop the mob from killing the two soldiers and the mob overpowered the limited police officers that were there. then i remember more stuff. the uss Cole then was attacked by what i now understand to be Israeli terrorists in a raft filled with explosives. causing six to die and several injured. then it went back to the Israeli helicopters blowing up more stuff and killing countless innocent people. (i think pride had something to do with it.) then the stock markets all went really low. like 300 plus points under. but i really don't understand the amount of violence and death and excessive force that the Israelis felt they HAD to use. the Palestinians only have light weapons and rocks. no match for missiles and bombs. why did the terrorists decide it would be a good idea to try and blow up a boat? a large boat. this is all getting me down. but its driving me crazy. war isn't just hell. its pointless and stupid. how many f*cking people have to die over a piece of land? that's what this whole thing is about .isn't it? the holy land of Israel. what the f*ck good is it when its blown up. if I'm wrong please correct me. but from what i gathered over the years the Palestinians were there first. it was their land that was taken from them and given with out permission. all this only means that tomorrow its just going to get worse. later joe +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. craziness lately... you guys have me thinking of all the little shows i watched when i was a kid. i'm jealous, cuz i always had to watch cartoons at other kids' houses...i wasn't allowed television at home. i think back at how rebellious i felt watching "that evil box" but i mean how rebellious can you really be watching g-force and astroboy, or transformers and GI joe...? ahhh...my parents' plan backfired, cuz as soon as i knew better about the evils of technology, i became addicted to cartoons, mind you i was mid teens by this point. Thundercats, HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! ummm...enough of that silliness. i've escaped my parents and am free to do whatever, watch tv, listen to music...own a car... well, i've cut all my hair off again...i was going for that shaggy thing, but i looked awful, now i look damn fine...and i almost look my age, i didn't get carded last night...this is an event folks...but when you're 24 and can't grow sideburns... ummm...HEY YOU LITTLE TORONTO GIRLS AND BOYS...ummm...it's still a coupla weeks off but everyone go to that magnetic fields thingy (unless the date has changed again...) and badly drawn boy is coming and broadcast as well...i'm all lonely going to shows so it would be nice to see you lot out... ummm...gotta go to tim horton's and get my fix... ttyl a. I am getting sooo bored of seeing the same episodes repeated. And I don't know how many times I have seen Johnny Bravo with those evil dolls, or where he goes out with the werewolf girl. 2. I was five, or four, and bright colours amazed me. The colours, the ideas, and the idea that to pretend I was the girl in Battle of The Planets, all I had to do, was put on a sun visor and pull up my hood. And run around, or perhaps get out my bike and ride around. Same could be acheived for Dungeons and Dragons, all I needed was to wear my coat or jacket, and suddenly! Ah! I was invisible! You can't see me! Ha! Now, call me cynical and old, but it doesn't really appeal to me, to do that sort of thing these days. Now with modern cartoons. The majority of characters in modern cartoons don't really wear an awful lot of capes or anything. There is no gimmick. And thats why kids cartoons from the eighties totally rule, and kids shows nowadays totally drool. Are you trying to tell me that Tweenies is better than Playschool? Twice a Day?? (I used to watch both episodes when I was a wee girl). Exceptions to the modern day rule though include Simpsons, cos thats class, and Toy Story2. But still, no gimmicks. How many kids do you see pretending to be wearing a lab coat, a la Dexters Lab? The thing about it all was that in the eighties, you could go out, and play whatever you had seen on telly. Unless it was dark, or something. You didn't need the same plot, just the jist of it. It had that interactive entertainment thing going on. Pokemon comes close for interactiveness, but that involves buying cards/games/toys. Sorry, I'll shut up now. Sinister: oh boy

PLEASE! GO! AND! TALK! ABOUT! GENOCIDE! AND! OTHER! STUFF! ELSEWHERE! BETWEEN! YOURSELVES! MAYBE?! NOT! ON! SINISTER! Phew. I get this awful sinking feeling whenever people start referring to each others' posts and addressing things to specific other people in rather less than tender terms. Anyhoo, apart from that, welcome back to the hardy perennial that is the classy cartoons debate. Battle For The Planet (or G-Force, as I knew it) was, in fact, shit-hot, although quite silly on occasion. It was the only thing apart from Star Wars we had on video (ah, early VHS: toploader, brushed steel, weighed as much as a Nissan Micra) when I lived in Nigeria as a wean. That and any number of insufferable Porky Pig offerings. However, we must not discount the current offerings: Dexter's Lab is indeed mighty fine, and the Powerpuff Girls is, as I noted on a recent Sky-trip, scarily addictive, with its flashing lights and dayglo irony. Yum. So I went to see Broadcast in a black smelly pit of Doom on Wednesday. Very pleasant indeed, and they even R!O!C!K!E!D! a bit. My goodness. I didn't know how many people in Oxford were up for a bit of the Mighty 'Cast, but I was rather surprised at the number that squeezed themselves sweatily into The Point. Maybe I shouldn't have worn an ankle-length fleece skirt, as it was rather warmer than was comfy. Bleurrgh. Mr Carsmile had to retreat to the doorway in horror at the humidity levels, the great wuss ;) Watched Batman and Robin on telly last nite. I think I'm too old for the modern action thriller. What a load of arse, tit and poo. So, in conclusion, go and see Broadcast if they come your way, as they make fab tinkly noises, don't ever watch films with George Clooney in them (stick to reruns of ER), and discuss scary subjects on your own time (please?). I think about all this stuff too much to have it impinge on the cool fluffiness of Sinister. Not being didactic, just asking. I'm going to be old(er) tomorrow! 22 looms like a big old palindrome. hi sinister! just want to share with u all a nice surprise i got tonight when reading my campus newspaper. its usually crap, i mean nothing interesting covered, certainly nothing of my music interest, and b&s featuring in it is something unthinkable, at least for me. BUT (i feel no guilt beginning a sentence with but) it did, in this week's issue, someone wrote a review of 'fold ur hands child...' hello hello sinister tonight i walked my dog and the moon's just fantastic. so bright it overpowered the streetlamps and that orangy glow from chicago. if there are any northwestern university students on the list, i would strongly suggest you go out onto long field tonight (over at the corner of lincoln and sheridan road) and just stare up at the sky and marvel at just how big it is. of course, if you don't read this until tomorrow, you can do it tomorrow night. i think the moon will still be full (and on a friday the 13th, to boot). i recently spent a semi-sizeable sum of money on an mp3 player, and it's been a godsend. for example, seeing the way the sky is on this balmy autumn evening, i opted to listen to pink moon while i walked my dog. then i listened to built to spill "velvet waltz". how marvelous. it's also been fantastic for my walk to the hospital for school in the morning. i almost always have one of about 5 specific songs stuck in my head during that walk, so i just put them all on the player and choose whichever one is going through my head at the time. it's usually "expectations." or guns 'n' roses "sweet child 'o' mine," but that's just because that's the alarm i have on my palmpilot telling me to take my birth control pills every morning. so it gets stuck in my head, you see. sometimes i get "the state i am in" in my head, because that's the one that wakes me up. so enough about all that. i recently started the medical technology program at the hospital near here, and walking there in the morning (and home in the afternoon) involves crossing the street at the same place i did to go to school in first grade. so imagine my astonishment when i recognized the crossing guard at that corner. his name's john. he's a big guy with a shaved head. he used to be in the navy. when i was in elementary school he once told me he wanted to be a detective. 16 years later and he's still a crossing guard. he still gives out candy on fridays. he's not a detective. it kind of makes me sad to think about it, but he says he gets paid $20 an hour as a crossing guard, and that sounds like good money to me. especially since i get paid a measly $7 an hour to work part time at peet's coffee. speaking of which, there must be some people on this list from around here (evanston, IL), so if you want coffee, just come into peet's (on chicago avenue, between davis and church. next to whole foods) on a weekend and ask for kerry. if i'm there, tell me you're from sinister and i'll give you free coffee. i'm not kidding. i really will. i would wear a B&S badge upside down or something on my apron, but i don't think i'm allowed to. besides, all of my badges seem to have disappeared. they're probably in a box somewhere, as i've not unpacked from the move home from school last may. that's primarily because i still need to move out of my parents' house, so what's the point in unpacking if i'm just going to be packing everything back up again in a month or so? maybe even sooner. if i had time i'd be looking for an apartment. actually, that's a lie. i have looked for apartments, but i'm too lazy to keep looking. still, i'd like to get out of this house, though i'd sure miss my dog once i left. but, that's enough of that. so what's this about someone's friend's friend moving in with beans geddes? i'm jealous. i'd like to move in with beans. of course, i don't live in scotland, so that might cause a problem. who knows, after i graduate next august, maybe i will. i got Kid A, and i'm not sure how i feel about it yet. as an album it's excellent, as a radiohead album i'm disappointed with it. i listened through it the first time just waiting for that patented radiohead rock out drum 'n' guitar work, and never heard it. so disappointed. truly, truly disappointed, if you will. apparently they'll be releasing the follow-up next year, so that's good. they'll be on saturday night live this weekend, i'm thinking of taping it. well, i think i've written enough for now. maybe this was a waste of time, maybe not. hope you enjoyed reading this as much as i enjoyed writing it. -kerry -- "even though you'll never come clean, you know it's true: those sheets are dirty, and so are you." - descendents, "clean sheets" ________________________________________________________ 1stUp.com - Free the Web Get your free Internet access at http://www.1stUp.com +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org.
