Sinister village people, 1) At the Poetry Cafe last Friday, I had my palm read by a tall man with a beard. He told me I was up for promotion at work, and wasn't that close to my parents, which is mostly correct. He did this, however, whilst staring intently at my face rather than my palm, which I found curious. I think it's very easy to read people by their faces, but have always been impressed by those who manage to do it by the palms alone. This bearded palmist also told Scarlet (the prettiest star in the Sinister galaxy) that she would a) never have to work for a living and b) have lots of children, which was very funny. It fully restored my faith in palmistry, at least as a comedic device. I was hoping he'd read Darren Hefner's hand - I imagine he'd draw some fairly shocking conclusions. Especially from his right hand. 2) I was initially fairly indifferent to Stu D's departure. He always seemed very happy footling around on stage with Looper. He was like a child with expensive toys at Bowlie, his miner's light strapped to his head. And Y2K is rarely far from my record player (although certainly not for the dodgy pulp remix). However, on friday night, sitting up in bed by candlelight with happy thoughts of pretty girls and even prettier boys in my little head, I read Ink Movies with a certain poignancy. He talks so fondly of the band. Without glamourising them, he makes everyone so loveable. It seems sad that the one who had such a strong notion of band unity, and such a strong vision of how the band could exist as an art form beyond the realms of music, should be the first to leave. 3) Samantha did recently write of Nick Drake: >I can't imagine him as >ever being a real person for that reason, I think and I heartily agree, especially because of the bizarre quasi-mystical nature of all of his press shots and album sleeves. On the back of Bryter Later (or at least the lovely re-issue) there is a shot of ol' Drakey standing next to what looks like the Westway at night. it is so strange to see such incongrous items juxtaposed. Nick Drake. Dual carriageway. Nick Drake. Dual carriageway. It seems so surreal, as if they belonged to totally different times. Was that post any good? I am too lacklustre to read it through. He's a card of the spiffingest variety. Nice to see that tha Tinderstixxz are getting maseev props down Sinistah these daze. My goodness me, I wonder, what is this strange ethnic jive-speak mood that seems to have come over me? Ahem. Anyway. So, to whoever put A Marriage Made In Heaven (is that really Isabella Rosselini?) on their tape twee offering, a big smacking kiss. Mwah. No, do not shy away in fear! I mean you no harm! This whole village thingy is quite disturbingly aposite at present, as my current artistic-endeavour-like project is a website for a fictitious town wot I made up, namely Great Littlehampton. It's got a butcher, a baker, and an ethnic handicraft salesperson, which just goes to show. So who's been reading my mind, then? FILTHY BACKSTABBING SINISTER BASTARDS! I hit the caps lock button by accident then, but liked it so much I kept it on. Hmmmm. Can I be the village tramp? Not in the sense of an easy shag (although that could be arranged for the right money), but in the sense of an encrusted and dribbling personage who sits on a park bench leering cross-eyedly at passers-by. _My_ kind of occupation. Friends of mine who row (silly sport which is much practised in this daft and much-villified university of mine) make tramp noises when they race. It's very amusing and probably on a par with girly tennis-player noises for instant arousal of people who speculate in their idle moments about the colour of Anna Kournikova's pants. So there you go. My excessive singing activities for this term are slowing down now, having done 3 concerts in the last week or so. Still got the Mozart Requiem to go, though. And I've got to do evil soprano solos in a Schubert Mass on Sunday. Blimey. Still, it's good for the soul, wherever that item may be found in the physiology of one who doubts its existence. That's a predefined social going-up-to-heaven- with-harp kind of soul, by the way. I'm quite happy with the concept of the Aretha Franklin variety, mmmmmyeah. "Say a Little Prayer" as sung by Ms.F is one of the more sublime experiences one can hope for in this wintry world. Props to Senor Bacharach al_so_. Sinister Village. Yes please. Velocity Girl asked me to run the disco, while Peter runs the porno shop. Erm, how about we have a half share in each? Peter can slap on some Amon Duul and then sell butt plugs from the door of the DJ booth while I cunningly segue into a pop S!M!A!S!H! from Kate B!U!S!H! while he's not looking, and he can gain his revenge with some Neu! B-sides while I'm demonstrating how to gain maximum satisfaction out of an inflatable Stuart David. Or a Wee Karn who lives up to her name. And I just need to say Lucy Alder, Hospital Radio - and cheers to Owen the Stud, for taking the horse-shagging duties. Probably the only creatures he wouldn't split right open with his love truncheon, I'd imagine. Can I be in the football team too? Anyone who remembers my opening goal for Looper (ahem) at Camber Sands will guarantee I've got just the right sort of spunk to penetrate even the tightest boxes. I'd also like to sign up for the cricket team and the mafia. I think I may qualify for the latter by birthright. I'm going to the mattresses. Will Jason Andreas be the Prodigal Son? Or should that be Christal Balls? As for the next T****m*****g, it's still up in the air as the increasingly irritating bloke from the Mean Fiddler hasn't got back to me. I'll do my level best, Leyla, promise... Did anyone hear about the truck driver who had his licence taken away for 24 hours when it was revealed he'd spent 16 days driving without a break? Obviously some kind of astronaut-esque urinary system must have helped, as well as Metal Machine Music on a loop. Me and my mate Bob once decided to spend an afternoon listening to the whole of Lou Reed's epic, and I must admit I really quite enjoyed it. So I can probably keep up with Peter after all. Oh yes, I had another musical recommendation the other night - can anyone tell me if the 100%, 200% and 300% Dynamite (sp.?) compilations are worth investing in? Brandt's problem with B&S surprises me. It's odd, but whenever I put a B&S song on a compilation, I sigh when it comes on - the whole point (to me) of making a compilation, at least if it's for myself, is to put the songs I want to listen to N!O!W! on it, and therefore most of them aren't likely to be too familiar. But the shock of the new is spoilt somewhat when I reach the Belle track, and I invariably regret having featured it. Much better is to languish in a whole album (or two, or three) and get the full gorgeous B&S kick in one go. Isn't Masterpiece the record pressing company? Certainly loads of my 7" from way back when have got "Masterpiece" carved into them. My favourite run-out groove is on This Woman's Work by Kate Bush (have I gone on at length about how great Kate Bush is? I have? Righto) - "Up yours, Ugly", it says. I cried that night. Sinister: woohoo! Dot review:)

Hey there listees! Just writing to tell about my exquisite time I had at BOTH Dot Allison shows! Heavenly indeed! First of all the venue, the Watershed is a gorgeous marvel built over a pond near our state Art Gallery (itself an old and beautiful place). It was constructed just for the Festival of Perth and has all these cool gigantic water pipes with tv screens fitted on them so it looks like people are swimming inside the pipes. Cool huh? They have a nice light show too. The ambiance is laidback and really chilled out-perfect for a Dot Allison show! Only problem was the number of pretentious old farts who attended- most of whom had never heard of Dot (mostly just leftover from watching the previous band -sophisto jazzy Paris Combo) and a lot of whom made noise during her set-BOO! Pete Wiggs from the legendary Saint Etienne did the warm-up and on the first night, he played a new St Et song! The host of the show was obviously a big Dot fan since her days of One Dove, which was very refreshing to see. When she came on, I was amazed that she was so small- she seems so statuesque in her photos! She was wearing a frayed denim skirt and a "porn star" singlet. She was complimented by James Nesbitt on guitar and err someone on keyboards whose name escapes me. From the minute she launched into "Mo Pop" I could tell we were in for something very special indeed. The set she played was way too short-40 minutes and an encore but was transcendental and just so so GORGEOUS! She played two new songs! "Know Glow" (which was the song I didn't know from her KCRW session) and "Strung Out" (which unfortunately I didn't record for some reason-bugger!) and covered a Neil Young song "I believe in you"-all absolutely divine and which bodes very well for her second album. "Did I Imagine You" and "Tomorrow Never Comes" were of course meltingly lovely and "Breakdown" (one of my favourite singles of ALL time) still manages to break hearts so effortlessly after all these years. also took pics of Dot and Pete-hope they turn out well. Afterwards the tables were cleared and the space was made into a dancefloor. Pete Wiggs came on again to play a fantastic set of rare groove, sixties pop and old skool soul and disco. It was really refreshing to hear such music played- mostly it either really bad kitschy 70's-80's stuff (which you get at practically every medical function:() or big beat. He got quite a crowd going- which was also very heartening to see. I know I was dancing up a storm! Didn't get to meet Dot on the first night- but got my "Tomorrow Never Comes" 7inch, "Afterglow" and "Morning Dove White" autographed by her. Also got a signed set list from her-woohoo! The second night was if you can believe it-even more ethereal and delicately beautiful. It's really amazing to think that someone who was involved with all of techno's big movers and shakers (Andy Weatherall, Richard Fearless, err William Orbit etc) could do acoustic so well. This time bootlegged every song except yet again "Strung Out" (uurrgh!) she played exactly the same set of songs but in a different order. But when songs are as crystal perfect as them, who's complaining? On the first night when she came out for an encore she joked that it would be an encore "in the truest sense of the word" and played "strung out" again! Also met a fellow huge Dot fan from England, Mac. Saw him on the first night and again on the second. Guess what???:) Dot came out with her manager and mingled with the crowd! Mac had on his mobile phone, his best mate from England whom Dot promptly spoke to!!! Isn't that just so sweet?:) got her to sign my "mo pop" and "breakdown" singles and her manager was very impressed at how I got a hold of these rare items. (imagine their amazement at how someone from Perth got hold of the "TNC" single!) and guess what ? Dot gave me a kiss on the cheeks! WOOHOO again! don't know how a night could get more perfect than that. I sorta wished I took a pic with her but didn't know if it would be too cheesy-do you think it would have been too cheesy??? Ah well did take another photo of her anyway on stage. Yet again thought of good questions to ask her afterwards- why does this always happen to me? Really wanted to ask about the aborted second album (One Dove) and what direction her new stuff is taking. Well manager gave her email addy and hopefully thru her can get my questions sorted out! Wanted to interview her for friend's fanzine but didn't get down to organizing it. (how would one organize it?) hopefully can conduct internet interview then-wish me luck:) Dot said she hoped to return with her five-piece for the full Dot Allison experience-yay! Pete played another brilliant set yet for some reason to a much smaller crowd (though me and my friends were yet again dancing up a storm). My friend left a note for Pete saying his set was divine and that we couldn't wait for them to return for them to return with Sarah and Bob. He also autographed my bro's "foxbase alpha", "misadventures" and "52 pilot" single, and was also by all accounts, a super-nice bloke. Anyhoo, that's enough from me and my rantings and ravings. Sinister: Feeling rather strange.............

Helloooooo This is my first post (good, glad that's out of the way!) It's so bloody intimidating having to read all these amusing and witty peoples posts for God knows how long before you can post! I actually "graduated" months ago but have never had the guts (or anything interesting to say!) until now........ Actually, if truth be told, I think I'm still a little drunk. Went for a quick pint after work and ended up trailing home at 2 in the morning. I'm still in that "pre-hangover" stage and so I'm trying to make the most of it! The one thing I did genuinely want to ask was (wait for it...) Has anyone else noticed the complete inaccuracy of the sleeve notes on all B & S albums? I can't work out whether it's some attempt to infer artistic maverickness or just slackness (I don't think either of those are actual words, but never mind!) on behalf of Jeepster. Do forgive me if this has been covered before, but as I say I have been "listening" for some time now and have not heard anything to solve this riddle! Can I please be the Sinister Village cabbie? I quite like the idea of driving around all day picking up interesting and attractive people and then driving around some more! I'm sure real cabbies are going to disagree with this insight into the cabbies world but I still think it's quite a romantic idea (not to mention an occupation involving the minimum in physical exertion!) I won't make this too long as I don't want to shoot my bolt (if you will) too soon! What we need now is an r'n'b- artist who really tells us what he's thinking. D'Angelo, R. Kelly and all the other ones who want to "pleasure their ladyz"... Piss off, you're lying. I bet those guys just say those things to their one-night-stands, then disappear in the morning, going: "Wehey, I got some! And it only took me four gazillion sold albums, three weeks in rehab and a lawsuit!" Yes, I hate that "ooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhh baby"- thing. Why cant they do it like Barry White, with style? Now there's a man for you! (CHANGE THE SUBJECT YOU TWAT!) The Sinister village! Am I the official bartender now? I'd luv to do that, listen to people bitch about their problems, record it all to a minidisc and then blackmail people. Erm, no I wouldn't. Forget that. But yeah, serving beer to you lot would be nice. But what we need now to our village is some entertainment. I need some action in my pub. So who wants to be a lapdancer, eh? I have a few people in mind from the List, but I'm NOT going to reveal my obsessions. And of course we need a group of guys to be our very own Bellendales. You know, those muscular guys who rub lotion on their chest while women stare at them. So all in all, we need: 1) Women with boobs (Should be pretty easy) who like to perform. No matter how you look, we men are so pathetic that we get off from just about anything that doesn't have a willy (gays not included) 2) Guys with a good body (from Sinister list? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!). The trouble with you women is that you actually have some sense in you, and you dont' get aroused by looking at a Mitsubishi Lancer, like some blokes. So it's harder to think of erotic entertainment for you. Send your job-applications directly to me. And please, enclose a phote of yourself. For... eh... research purposes. (PERVERSIONS ASIDE, I'M ACTUALLY A NICE CHAP) Aahh, what a life. Tomorrow I'm off to interview Sahara Hotnights, the rock'n'rollest band from Sweden. Four 19-year old Swedish girls. He was quiet and polite and went about his business on the court pretty quietly. I had a heck of a time trying to make myself play hard defense against him because I kept imagining I was blocking Stuart Murdoch himself and I just couldn't bring myself to do that. If any of us actually got to sport against any of the B&S clan I bet we'd find it hard to beat them. I have a vinyl of an old band from Washington, DC called Rites of Spring that has "I love it when you try not to laugh" etched in the run-out groove. I've always pictured this couple doing the etchings and flirting the entire time and then one of them etches that onto the record just to make the other laugh. this must be one of the most diverse classes i have ever had. granted the name is 'literature of ethnic america' and all, but should the topic of the class describe the students who take it? most of the students, when i look around, are white, but there is a deep mixture of minorities. a chinese girl, who speaks mostly broken english sits way up in the front row. i can tell she is very intelligent. she never talks about bull shit from china, or similarities between them and the united states or anything like that, she always talks about 'people'. it makes it easy to see that nationalities are just classifications, people are people are people anywhere you go. there is an older man from lebenon (who also sits in the front row), hes about 40-45 id say. also he is very intelligent. his english (although he still has an accent) and his vocabulary are better than most anyone i know. i have terrible english. i swear and stutter and fumble over words all the time. its kinda humbling for someone who grew up speaking a different language, to speak it so much better than i. there are also a few coloured students in my class. please dont think i am prejudice, i just find this interesting. now, i went to predominantly white high school, and seldom had a class with coloured students. having been going to college (university) for 4 years now, im still getting used to it. the curriculum for the class includes a few books by black authors (toni morrison, ernist j gaines...) , and a lot of the subjects deal with poverty, prejudice and slavery. i often wonder what the black students think when these issues are laid out in class everyday. i am also embarrassed when the book reads 'nigger' and we have to read it out loud in class. am i the only person who feels this? i really dont want people to think i am prejudice, i really, really am not. before class started today, a lady from mexico (she states all the time that shes from there), who also by the way sits in the front row ( i sit toward the back) was talking about her tax returns. now, it was real quiet in the room, and she was talking real quiet so only the person she was talking to could hear. heh heh. i wanted to speak up and say, "dont bother whispering, we all can hear you." i know i could hear, and i think i have poor hearing, so im sure everyone else heard too. theres this girl that sits way on the opposite side of the class. i quite possibly could be infatuated with her (it takes me a while to know) she is always dressed really well, and i think she may have a lot of money (not that i really care), but she always looks nice and clean and smart. aarrggg my prof is making us move to the front of the room, now im surrounded by people i dont really like. there is this other girl that kinda sits near me who has new sneakers. she keeps sticking her foot out and posing them so she can get a good look at her new kicks, how annoying. this one guy that always sits near me always sleeps, when hes not though, hes always talking about his band. "were going to be the first band signed off the internet", he blurted out today to his friend. he looks like the kind of guy whos in some PANTS rock/rap band with the likes of limp biscuit or something. im very green over this guy. i want a band, i dream of it all the time. although i cant find anyone who plays anything ( i play guitar and can sing fairly well), or who likes the same music as i. ggrrrrr so im a little envious, who cares? theres this other guy, he thinks hes sooo smart. his voice is kinda high pitched and annoying, and he always tries to make these connections of things in the book and real life. they hardly make any sense, hes soooo annoying. i think his voice is a large part of it. my prof is like 30 years old, she isnt that attractive or anything, but she has a real nice personality. so, on the first day of class, i decided to seduce her ( i would never do anything, i thought it might be fun to try and disrupt her teaching everytime she looked at me, and saw me gazing at her [do i use too many commas?]). i know im attractive, and am rather high on myself as well. but its a good high-on-ones-self, a healthy one, either that or id be dead. so anyways, for like 4 class periods i never took my eyes off of her. much to my demise, nothing ever happened. perhaps im not as appealing as i think. im an unusual person, i know it, i kinda cherish it. but looking around this classroom, i dont feel so unusual, everyone is weird. it kinda depresses me. this is my cue to be even stranger. has anyone else fallen in love with any of the characters from the beautiful belle and sebastian songs? i relate to them well, i wish they were real people (perhaps they are?) i would look for them, and say "hey, im just like you!". thats all for now, my prof just said orgasm, i think i should be paying attention. haa haa haa another 4.78 minutes lost to me....sorry..... jason the homo/heterogeneous +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Sinister: etchings

A quick flip through my limited vinyl seems to show that etching is not such a rare thing. Sub-Pop usually, but maybe not in *all* cases, etches weird things onto the inner rings of their singles. For instance, the Luna single has "kazoo a rama" etched, The Freewheelin' Mark Arm has "kdissch" carved -- but it was pressed in Germany, so maybe that's a German thing akin to the numbering? Dot Allison's single has "and now the end is near" on the a and initials "c.e." on the b side. "The End" is etched on the Lou Barlow record -- that was the last single issued in the first series released on Sub Pop, I think. They seem to do it rather consistantly. Other labels seem to do it as well... randomly it would seem. The Amphetameanies "Tales of the Arizona Highway" has "There's only one R.P.M." etched, while "Last Night" has nothing but the standard numbers. Butterflies of Love on Secret 7 has "Beware the Positive Men!" on one side and a dedication to several people on the other. Going WAY back in time, I see initials on the "Workingman's Dead" and a funky little symbol on the "American Beauty" lps." And someone's name in in tiny tiny lettering is on the Ten Years After "Shhhh" record. Although they are obviously "personalizations" these seem to be stamped rather than etched... probably because they were pressed in massive quantities back then, while vinyl is released in much smaller numbers now.
