I love a good off-topic discussion and this Pink Floyd business is brilliant. I particularly enjoy the really earnest posts. You lot are fab, you know that? Why are Pink Floyd pink? It's a bit of a girlie-puff colour to choose, isn't it? Pink Floyd played at one of my Dad's college dances, but I think they were called The Pink Floyd then. So did The Who, but that was in the sixties, so there was NO SEEKER!!!! Of course, he's still gutted he never got to see them perform such a classic and even more gutted that he never witnessed Rog flailing the lengthy fringing of his jacket about the stage in a cowboy styleee. I've got a picture of him doing that and he looks just GRATE. And why have we stopped saying GRATE? Who was it who got annoyed every time somebody wrote GRATE? Are you annoyed now? Ha! I'm in a funny mood today. It's probably because I haven't seen the sunshine for weeks and weeks and London is looking positively murky today too. In the interests of Sinisterines having meet-ups in the next few days, I have again done a little research into the wevver (at http://www.met-office.gov.uk) and have come up with the following: Sheffield on Saturday - 17 degrees and a white cloud London on Saturday - 19 degrees with a white cloud, a sun peeking out from behind it and a raindrop Barcelona today - 26 degrees with a great big sunshine. You bastards. Will somebody in Barcelona please take a picture of Peter Miller? I'm dying to know what he looks like. I bet he's a fox. Nick Dastoor laughs at books. I laugh at boots. Yellow boots. But I really get in a lather when every other woman on the train is reading a book with a pastel jacket and whacky lettering that's about somebody called Jemima or Tiffany. They always seem to have daisies on them as well. I've never read one of those books, but I can't stand them. Much as I can't stand Pink Floyd, even though I've never heard them. Oops. Sinister: just say NO to YES.

OK. Mentioning Yes was SUCH a mean thing to do. I'm having flashbacks. The scene: Pine Knob in Michigan. The situation: A poor boy tricked into seeing aforementioned band perform by a 'friend.' Here I was, a naive little boy wandering around in a b&s shirt, gawking at the stoned bikers wandering around with women half their age and the extremely old men on the stage. I thought 'well, I've never heard this band before. Maybe they're good.' And then the vocalist spoke, his words a high pitched, eerie squeel. I wanted to cry. And then...and then...he sang. It was horrible. The bikers gently swayed. The animals took refuge. I slowly tore at my face hoping the pain would distract me from the awful sounds surrounding me. It didn't. Twenty minute songs that started nowhere and ended in roughly the same spot after meandering around in a rather sloppy circle were chained together almost seamlessly. Every brief refuge from the horrible 'music' was ruined by Mr. Singer talking. My friend asked me if I thought the band sucked. I said 'Yes.' Bad pun, but true. I'm sorry. I hate to be so negative..but it was just such a horrible show. It hurts to be reminded of. But maybe talking about it will help a bit. Tomorrow is a new day. I will ride my bicycle to the park. I will swing while listening to b&s. I will be watched by the policemen. I WILL overcome my Yes experience. I think I can I think I can I think I can.. Ive been told that Canada is full of conspirisies. I probably shouldn't be uttering a word of this..but Canada is actually only the size of RHode island.maybe less. and the air is unsuitable for most human beings. Those canadians have evolved lungs. creepy. This women was talking to me today about belle and sebastian. she mentioned that she saw them in Point Pleasant, nj. Did they actually play there? or was she some kind of undercover canadian? chickfactor sounds to me like something simon and garfunkle might sing. which is a good thing. but im probably way off on that, no? (these are mostly rhetorical questions, im not really interested in answers) I think Wisconsin has some demons itself. Supposedly it is actually Hell. imagine that. You turn your back for two minutes and look what happens, flipping Pink Floyd everywhere. Now, I'm a reasonable man, most of the time, ask anyone, but i WILL NOT STAND for this kind of talk. Pink Floyd are sad old hippies yer dad liked, they are not for the likes of us, we must point and laugh at their fans and, indeed, at them, should we get the chance. Comfortably numb?? comfortably ARSE, more like. Piper at the gates of dawn?? Piper at the gates of SHITE. And they're responsible for bob geldof, and global warming and england being shite at football probably. If i may go back to Mr Kado's original point: "all that bullshit and bombast makes me ill" That was a partly political broadcast on behalf on the "where the bludy 'ells 'OPKINS when you need 'im" Party. All this talk has obviously warped Dastoor's mind as he asterisked TWO footnotes, and then only gave us ONE (*carsmile has mental image of dastoor giving us all one). I must say those Russian mechanical boots sound ACE, if very scary. Although not as scary as hundreds of lists of second hand records ;) Daf Moore commented on Ms House's news of NO TOUR, and I concur. Now I'll have to find another excuse for spending my redundancy on a trip to new york. Whatever happened to that tribute band that was being planned? Speaking of tribute bands (creaky link ahoy), was anyone else sad enough to be watching "winning lines" on Saturday nite. There was this guy on, and the two questions he got right were on S Club 7 and Lulu, but the funny thing was, you see, he was a METALLER and in a Mettalica tribute band, I laughed, but then my life is short of simple pleasures. I must say, the L*ndon p*cnic seems to be being organised with a touch more continental flair and elan this time. I'm always pretending to be Canadian, but no one's fallen for it yet. The Floyd, eh? This is my favourite thread for some time and so long, although I suppose much of my enjoyment is at poor old Knightowl's expense. Maybe I'm in the luxurious position of having never felt persecuted for my musical tastes, but I think unswerving narrow-minded contempt for certain artists is really quite funny. Obviously he doesn't. And I apologise to Steve Kado if I implied that his antipathy was as poorly grounded as my own. Any chance of everyone referring to them as FLOYD at all times? I think that might help. It did wonders for 1970s WHO. Whatever happened to all the Sinister rockists? Do even they draw the line at FLOYD? David Moore implicitly chasitises us again for not caring enough about genuwhine band news. I hereby serve notice of my intention to consume no solids until such time as the band announce UK tour dates again. Or at least some wacky jamboree in an unlikely location. I'll settle for a swiftly recorded new record though. What *are* they up to this year? Can anyone tell us? 'Fact' spot: Jes, the title you're after is, you'll be surprised to hear, 'Landslide'. No, it's not a cover, no matter what people might tell you. Yes, it is *the* Church Hall that Stuart and Richard are getting kicked out of. In answer to someone, people have remarked on the Left Banke's influence. The band played a cover of 'I've Got Something On My Mind' at the Manchester Town Hall in December 1998. They said 'Does anyone know who that was by?' afterwards and we all failed or else were too shy to pipe up. Me, I'd never heard of them but now I'm their biggest fan because I do anything the band say and if they told me to jump off a cliff or buy 'Ummagumma' I probably would. I might draw the line at 'Standing On The Shoulders Of Giant' though, which I believe Stevie recommended. Dear Sinister, I have a contribution to the Floydular conversation, sorry to say, but first - Have any of you listened to the Reverend Al Green lately? I'm not sure if you should or not, but if anyone has a chance to see him in person by all means make the effort! Don't be fooled by the JESUS! refrains, the man has sold his soul to the d-e-v-i-l I tell you. I'd imagine from recent debate that some of you would be a little disturbed to be getting your groove on next to a woman 3 times you age that knew *every* *single* *word*, but you'd be just plain wrong in my book. All this Floyd talk has me remembering that my very first reaction to B&S (IYFS) was not only "how 60's", but very specifically that it reminded me of Syd Barrett. After a little while it was hard to remember why I even thought that, but it probably had something to do with the the beautiful quirkiness of the melodies on that album. I can't remember the last time I actually wanted to listen to Pink Floyd, but I can remember an age when I did want to, which is more than I can say for most bands... On a similar note, I can't bring myself to buy the new Stereolab, which is distressing since a friend has done the engineering and/or production on the last 3 albums. There's nothing that's more annoying than not being able to compliment someone you know. BUT, I would never, ever miss a chance to see them live, which is a point I think worth making. They have a magical way of combining politics and pleasure that hasn't faded for me at all over the years. Not many bands have been able to maintain that for as long as they have. Still, there's nothing like the feeling when they light into the likes of Our Tritone Blast"... o.k. that's all, sorry for the ramble. Just to spice it up, I'll tell you that I hit a major milestone towards aldulthood last night. I was in the middle of it all when my girlfriend started laughing uncontrollably. "It's just so funny", she said.
