So, after getting more obsessed with Belle&Sebastian as each day passes I
decided to try and track down a copy of Tigermilk..
I mean (I asked myself) How hard can it really be? I live in London with a whole
plethora of record shops, I'll find a dusty old copy somewhere no problem.
1.30 pm Berwick Street ,Soho
If you can't find a record on Berwick Street where can you? Just been paid,
money burning a hole in my pocket, don't care how much the thing costs..
First stop , Reckless Records: Second hand exchange emporium . Start browsing
through 'B', hopes are high at this point, but nothing apart from Blondie and
Bauhaus, so I check out the 'Rarities ' and picture discs on the wall, but no
luck.
Finally ask the guy behind the counter to check on the computer, he takes a few
minutes and then says" yeh, Tigermilk..?" My eyes light up for a second, until
he adds "we last had a copy in August 1996" and how much?? "£4.99"
Blimey !!
2.15pm
Enter Selectadisc. Come across 12"s of LLPJ and Dog on Wheels. Remember that Dog
on Wheels is now deleted on Vinyl, and I only have it on CD, so stick that under
my arm (I'm sad like that) and wonder off to look at the back catalogue section.
Spend half an hour looking through badly produced fanzines and finally leave
with The Sundays new album, Dog on Wheels and something else.... oh yeh, the
Beatles White album complete with lyric/poster sheet and posters of the fab
four.
3.15pm
Right, this is where things get serious. Sister Ray Records.
March up straight away to the counter and declare "do you have , or have ever
had (and here comes the clever bit) OR KNOW ANYWHERE I CAN GET a copy of
Tigermilk by Belle&Sebastian??????
The friendly and helpful assistant takes to his computer..... and returns to the
counter to declare:
" Six months ago we had one, but it will cost you....£40"
So we're getting nearer! Six months ago now, but the price has gone up tenfold
too. Pay for She hangs brightly by Mazzy Star at £6.99 (pleased about that one)
and move on
4.15pm
Grubby old second hand shop where you get black fingers from fingering the
racks.
No Belle&Sebastian whatsoever but the assistant offers to ring round a whole
host of second hand shops in London on my behalf.
I thumb through the seven inchers while waiting (for what seems like hours) but
don't find anything of interest...
He gets back to me to inform me that he knew of one sold ONLY three months ago
for £75 *gulp* but since then the price has been escalating out of control, and
you can get a holiday in the South of France for less!
Spend Two whole pounds and fifty pence on New Order Peel sessions and decide to
call it a day.
But I'm not finished yet.
NEXT WEEK: MANCHESTER.

I hereby lay claim to being the dullest invidual on this list. I am a 28
year old statistician with aspirations to becoming a financial analyst.
I do not have Tigermilk but thanks to the Nytol I do not lose much sleep
over this fact.
In my defence , I do occasionally wear a baseball cap (backwards of course)
and am a staunch ally of S.A.D.

how is it that belle and sebastian have this wonderful way of just
completely cheering one up?
i put on if you're feeling sinster and i just all of a sudden became one of
the jolliest people for a while. i spent all easter listening to it, and
it just made me SO happy....
i thought you might just like to know that... doubt it actually as none of
you know me, but anyhow.
anyone else suffer from this inexplainable feeling of cheeriness and self
contentedness somehow when ever any song by belle and sebastian comes
on.... no? oh well.. i guess i must be kinda funny then.
oh well, Alan Partridge beckons with open arms for me this evening. oh,
incedentally... i have a friend, well, i know someone who is practically
identical to Alan Partridge. he makes me laugh a lot. *s* he's off at
university at the moment, being all knowledgable about medicine, which
somehow ruins the alan partridge connection.. but. you know.
Love to the World!

Hey people you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind, hey people
(clap clap clap) hey people (clap clap clap)!!!
Hi.
thanks for the poem al! I got it after my bus hadn't come in the morning
and it cheered me up!
OK-some stuff for you:
The line from JAMRS runs- "we're four boys in our courdoroys"
(sarahs really chuffed she knows something!)
To Susanna, hi me dear, bollocks. I was thinking I'm the youngest on the
list-I'm 16, but doing A-levels. Nooo-it's a sixth former
arsehole....please don't run away, I'm one of the nicer ones!
honestly...! And yup, I be the only one round my way who has heard of
B&S. Well, no, I have told people about them, but I know no FANS.
The list meet in London-why the hell not, everything else seems to be
down there, says the bitter and cynical one. from up north! PLEASE when
are the B&S gigs in Manchester? You've had them down south! But a list
meet oop north...?!? Nevr mind, I'd go to London, but being poor and
sacked from job (due to guy fleeing to Ireland coz of taxman)I can't
afford it-BUT I WANT TO!
Sod it.
Oh, and I remeber other people coming up with questions re: AFK van, or
whatever, I've forgotten just at the mo'-its a German familly
transporter, some dodgy car..or so they said...it wasn't in relation to
B&S tho' so it might be different.
Lovehearts and stars and at least AFK van soundz better than bicycle
made for two-which however would be..interesting! :)

Yesterday I was listening to the radio and I hear Pastie... on a aka
modern rock radio station in LA. It was the
first time I heard the song and to be honest I did not recognize the song
at first. Does this give some hope that American radio programmers will
play more B&S? And I am not talking about college radio.
For the Tigermilk search: I get so paranoid that I will miss a copy, I
flip through the "S" and "T" section in case the ignorant employee
misplaced it.

Tigermilk one:
I haven't got one. I know four people who have:
One, my flatmate who works in a 2nd hand record shop got his for =A33
and never tires of telling everyone, punctuated with
Nelson-off-the-Simpsons style 'haha'. One day I'll kill him (with a
knife or a bike chain).
Two, a pop celebrity/journalist/record company executive (work it out
yourselves, I'm giving nothing away, except that it's not Alan
McGhee.)
Three, a graphic designer/DJ in a Glasgow nitespot.
Four, a girl who works in a Manchester record shop. No names, these
people are my friends and I don't want them getting mobbed.
Other one
I'm 30, I'm not a student, my birthday is March 25th (an Aries). I
support Manchester City, my favourite colour is blue, and my favourite
food is Tiramisu. Fascinating.
Time for Alan Partridge.
Goodnight

hello everyone!
i'm just writing to say a general hello! i've been on the list for some
time but never quite managed to write anything, which, on reflection seems
quite hopeless!
hmmm... well.. here we go - register about ME!
age: 16 years old...
occupation: am doing my GCSE's (that can't fail but to sound bad)
and erm.... don't posses a copy of tigermilk down here in london, however,
i have a friend in oxford, called caroline who does... which is always
useful!
hmmm... one last thing! why not arrange a B&S meet in London!
(incidentally, how many of the people on the list are from London?) should
possibly be fun? well.... can only hope with the possibility in mind that
perhaps one day soon, i shall meet people who are aware that Belle and
Sebastian is not just the name of that well loved cartoon of a boy and his
dog, yet that they are a wonderful, downright sound band! well.. i can
only dream, and hopefully, not have it shattered!
hmmm... not sure what that spiele just was, but anyhow~
nice to be here and to finally have figured out how to work this damned thing!
Petra
anyone ever heard of a band called Telephone. i'm just wonder what common
opinion of this band are.. as with belle and sebastian my contemporaries
have never heard of them. i dunno!

I know that WUNH 91.1 FM, at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH rec'd a vinyl copy in November of 96. It changed my life back when I was there. "Expectations" was the first song I played.
I don't know if it's individually numbered, and I think it was sent to us by a kindly boy in the UK. If you want specifics, email idf(a)hopper.unh.edu-- that's Ian, and he's the music director. He'll help.
Cheers!

Yes, I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, but who did Select predict
to be greater than B&S.....??
S'later
Paul.
>>unanimous in their praise, and with Select
>>magazine voting them into a close second place in
>>the battle of Next Big Thing, everyone who knew
