so my weekend is coming to a close. my parents have gone back to chicago, the surprise party was a success (tho not a surprise, sadly, i'll get into that later), my parents bought me books and music because alas i have not the cash to do it myself, i didn't see seth, and now i have work to do. my parents were a hit with the people i live with. never in previous years have i sat down and talked with my parents and the people i live with. either i don't like the people i live with or they're not around. but last night we sat about in my living room chatting with my housemates and some of their friends for an hour or so. they all thought my parents were great and wished they'd stuck around for the party. apparently when my folks were leaving last night (i was up in my room at the time) my dad saw everyone putting out the liquor and said "do you have any jagermeister?" strange, i didn't know my dad liked jagermeister. he may have been joking. enough about my 'rents. the party was good. apparently the boy whose birthday it was (mat) knew about it ahead of time. his ex girlfriend who had been invited emailed him last week saying she was sorry that she wouldn't be able to make it to his big party on saturday. d'oh. but the stripper was a surprise, and that's good. she was very nervous beforehand, but loosened up once she started dancing, and even danced with mat's girlfriend (who hired her) for a bit. it was all very sexy and mat was doing his best not to look at her boobies. i danced a lot last night, probably mostly because it was my own house so i could smoke inside while i danced, etc. there were lots of people there we didn't know, and that was unfortunate. and they seemed really intent on grinding up onto me, but what the hell? i'll never see them again. (knowning my luck they'll start visiting my house a lot or something). later in the evening my friend kim says to me that she noted i had been dancing a lot, in particular with this one boy dressed in red, so she asked this boy's friend if he was a good egg or not. she told me apparently he's a very nice boy. i laughed, and she said she was just looking out for me. very nice, but i had no intentions of doing anything more than dance with this kid. and one moment was so perfect i immortalized it in an ink polaroid, which i will now type here: possibly how i'll remember this semester best, this one was taken at mat's 21st birthday party. it's all of the girls i live with, dancing and bouncing and singing to "video killed the radio star." trite, i know, but truly the highlight of the girls' portion of the evening. we're standing in a circle, laura in the black shirt and red-black leopard print vinyl pants, cat in the tight black dress, kim in the black top and red skirt, me in a black strappy tank top and blue pinstriped pants with my studded leather belt. it's a special occasion when kim decides to dance, and there we are, all dancing together and laughing. --- so that's that. the night wasn't all fun, though. i learned something i had suspected but didn't want to know. see, there's this boy that visits here on weekends a lot. he graduated from UMass last year, and he's mat's closest friend from vermont, so on the weekends he comes here and parties with us and stays in our guest bedroom (third floor landing filled with a mattress and blankets). anyway, last night cat told me he was "really hot" for me, and it made me super uncomfortable. i'd suspected it for a while, but since i'm not attracted to him i just ignored it. but it became very hard to last night when he insisted on putting his arm around my waist. he even asked me how i "handle being such a hot girl." flattering, yes, but also very very very uncomfortable for me. i know this kid, and i don't want to hurt his feelings. cat told me to hurt his feelings, but that's because she's mad at him. i don't want to do that. but i think by the end of the evening he'd gotten the idea even if just from me avoiding his roaming hands . . . oh, but that's enough of that. i've probably taken up an entire digest with my ramblings. if any of you care, the music i bought yesterday was (in alphabetical order): bis "social dancing," built to spill "keep it like a secret," merle haggard "16 biggest hits" (shut up, you're not allowed to make fun of me. i just bought it for "okie from muskogee", anyway. besides, i've been on a country kick and they didn't have any tammy wynette at the record store), lamb "fear of fours," and tindersticks "simple pleasure" (finally! i've never had the $25 to spend on it, since there's no american release i had to get it on import). so that's the music i bought. the only books i bought were a replacement copy of _the joke_ by milan kundera and the new translation of _laughable loves_, also by kundera. i'd been waiting for a new translation of that for years, so i didn't buy it because i wanted to make sure it was as accurate as possible. and finally they made a new one. yay! i know what i'll be doing when i'm done with my work this afternoon (reading _laughable loves_, for those of you who didn't get that). unfortunately _nalda said_ wasn't available at the bookstore in town, but they said they'll be getting it in eventually. good. haven't really gotten to listen to my new music much, though. i'm stuck on listening to built to spill's "twin falls idaho" repeatedly. i just like the reference to 7up (the game, not the soft drink). it's too sweet (the song, not the drink). -kerry p.s.: nobody ever touched my thumb when we played 7up in elementary school. it still makes me sad to think about it. i have just read 142 sinister posts. this is what happens when i go away for a week. my goodness you are a prolific lot. i just learned that my boy i met at the bowlie will be flying across the ocean to come visit me for my birthday. oh sigh. you british boys are such charmers really. b&s content: last week i was rumaging through some records at one of the few stores in philly that sell vinyl and i came across tigermilk and written in black marker on the plastic sleeve was: "the re-released first lp from the most pretentious fucking band that everybody fucking loves" huh? i left the store empty handed and a bit frightened. american metal head boys who own record stores can be so hostile sometimes. oh and someone wrote: >>>someone else: >wow. i really need a fuck. *sigh* >>>my mouth is opening and closing and no sound is >>>coming out. girls don't say things like this. oh please. although it isnt particularly fashionable for girls to be blunt, a few of us say what is on our mind at times. you boys have had the luxury of freely doing so for SO long, us girls thought it would only be fair of we joined in too. i really need a glass of wine. love danielle p.s. listen to tim and go see the chemisrty experiment. lovely music and the nicest people outside the new world, including tim himself who i dont think liked me much when we first met, however has now learned to put up with my obnoxiousness and give me a chance. Sinister: A year in the life

Well kids. It's been very nearly a year since i travelled from here in Brighton over to New York to see our own B&S play... twice... This also makes it almost one year since i posted to the list. To celebrate this fact that i am one of the biggest lurkers here, i thought i would write to you all. What do i write about ??? The urge to shoot Struan unless he gets his arse in gear with new stuff ??? a funny story about what happened to me on the bus ??? tales of why i hate my boss so much ??? Nope. this year has been the best year of my life. So delete now if you dont want to know some of the things that has made me so happy. I've seen the emergence of new bands who have made me think music hasn't gone to poo. Bands such as Ooberman, Godspeed you Black Emperor, Tim Keegan and Departure Lounge and Spearmint. I've also seen Hefner become one of my favourite's. I read Young and Foolish - a personal pop odyssey - by Alistair Fitchitt, which inspired me to seek out such bands as the Spinines, Eggs, Tsunami and the Working Holiday / Simple Machines various artists cd's. And also gave me intellectual reasons to tell people why The Go Betweens were always better than The Smiths. Ive seen internet shopping get easier, cheaper and safer. allowing me to purchase the previous items. I attended a weekend holiday camp which was full with people who have the same interests, and showed bands which will never again play the same venue again. I attended a B&S picnic for the first time. I saw the re-release of Tigermilk, of which i also purchased an original copy. I got a new job. I've seen the Sinister List grow from 400 to 1147 i have allowed myself to grow my sideburns to a length which is completely stupid and almost criminal. i've seen the Field Mice get a double CD re-release, making it the best record of last year by a mile. i had tears in my eyes when i first heard Slow Graffiti. I've seen Belle and Sebastian win a Brit Award and really piss off my friends and Pete Waterman. I saw a new Star Wars film at the cinema, and also saw Life is Beautiful. The best film about the war to come out of Italy. I saw Robert Forster and Grant McLennan share the same stage together, making that the best gig. and last but not least.. i fell in love. Right, this probably counts as list abuse but I'm only going to do it once. If you don't wanna read possible abuse of this fine list then delete this mail now. To the business in hand... Doing anything on Saturday November 6th? Well if not then come to Glasgow, the 13th Note Cafe in King Street to be precise, to the Short Fuse Records pop music extravaganza. Starring: The Chemistry Experiment, NME and Evening Session faves (also hated by Record Collector), once billed as Belle & Sebastian baiters. Although quite why we're not sure. Best selling band at the Bowlie Weekender y'know. Much beloved by The Butterflies Of Love...awww. My Legendary Girlfriend, not a Pulp tribute band or named after the book. Really. Could have been Dexy's Midnight Runners, if Dexy's had been an electro-romo ska group with a penchant for The Police, ties and Blake's 7. Smudge Dolby, melting guitars and sinister smiles. I haven't heard much by them but I'm told that they're really good. It all kicks off at nine in the evening and costs a measly £2. Sorry, I'll go now. Sorry. I really didn't mean to offend anyone. Sinister: Let's pretend we're bunny rabbits

Good Afternoon Sinister, I've just been watching the viddy printer announcing a very pleasing set of football results. Apart from my beloved City consolidating their position on top of Div 1, and Spurs doing the right thing, I was struck by an extraordinary news from the Highland League. Keith 3 Cove Albion 4. Is this true? Is the real reason for the relative silence from our own lovable moptop and nightclub entreprenuer that he's been making inroads into non-league football? It's an impressive result anyway, scoring 3 goals against 11 men all on his own. It's been a fun-packed last three days, we went to see Guided by Voices on Thursday, a band I know precious little about. But they rocked in the old fashioned way, well-aware of the humour, but without being all insincere and postmodern about it. Very entertaining. For some reason a little voice kept screaming "Cheap Trick" in my mind, but I silenced it with cheap speed and glue. Wumpkinny has committed a supreme act of treachery by fraternising with known members of Droolz this weekend. I would have taken Andy Dean up on his offer to spend the weekend watching the rugby with him, Trews, Mike and Tim and scratching our crotches. Our own, not each others, you understand. But last time we did that Tim started crying because someone had fallen over and Tim reckoned it looked "hurty", while Andy kept begging we play soggy biscuit and lighting his own farts. Roolz' very own Boutros Bourtros Sven-gali, Kevan Cooke attempted to lead poor Genevieve astray by writing a pack of half-truths about French pop. Remember, Gen, rock managers are notorious liars, don't believe any of it. He also praised the Magnetic Fields and their "Sandinista"esque triple album. That bit was true, normally I'd keep well away from songs about bunny rabbits, but when they succeed in being both saucy and romantic, then I'm sold. Last night I went to see "The Blair witch project" with Big Poppa Warrander John, the fragrant Emma, and love's young dream, JJ and Rachel. I liked it. I liked it a lot. My knees were shaking baby, my heart it beat like a drum. We need more people like Kerry, and less whinging adolescents on this list. Sinister: love and other catastrophies

hi sinisterines, i haven't posted before, so i will introduce myself. my name is eric, i am a student, and i live a quiet life at home in the suburbs of sydney with my parents, my dog and my record collection. and i think belle and sebastian are probably the best band in the world, although the pastels are up there too in my book. now that i've got that off my chest.. i was just going to say, lauren of the u.s.a. was asking about the movie "love and other catastrophies" and said it was english. it's actually australian. it's a nice movie isn't it? it was pretty popular here. it was made on a very low budget apparently but i think it gave it a nice "fresh" feel. i have to say, my experience of the student life-style hasn't been much like in the movie. i won't go into that though. :) one of my favourite movies is gregory's girl. i recommend that to everyone! eric. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". My women, my women... A sinister strctly for the ladies' night? Bongs, hotknives, sputniks, buckets... and that's before they even take their coats off. I've been reading Chickfactor, and I know what kind of thing goes on at Berry Towers. Drugs, drugs and more drugs. And devil eggs. I wish I could go too. I bought a record by Taj Mahal. I haven't listened to it yet though. But I think it's great that pop stars name themselves after buildings. We could have Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House, Clyde Auditorium (the singing orangutan) and Donny Sthorpe Miners' Welfare. Great! What - up his bum or something? Sounds promising. The title reminds me of "Bill Drummond Said" by Julian Cope. I just thought I'd share that with you. I don't think the reviewer should have used the word "loonies" to refer to loonies - "menkos" would have sufficed. So much for "passages of rare compassion". Reviews of rare hypocrisy more like. He must think we're all mongols. Trousers also asked about former pop stars in normal jobs. Keith once told us that one of The Belle Stars or Amazulu or something had started work at his company. Is she still there, Keith? If so, tell her that her "Sign of the Times" is better than Prince's. It's not true, but it'll make her day. "Q Magazine" has a feature along the lines of "where are they now?" Sometimes it's quite sad. "We could've been a contender!". This week it's the Tygers of Pan Tang. I haven't read it yet. Trousers also talked about the general crapness of magazines. I must agree. How much does a track on the free CD plus corking review inside "Uncut" cost? What's more, the language is disgusting! Just look at this litany of filth, included in two short reviews on page 132, credited to a shadowy figure known only as "RMcT": wankers, arse, masturbation, todgers, dick. Bring back Tiswas. Kipper Clarke, can we have some more of your fluffosophy please? I feel that you've been neglecting us lately. In my village, all the Clarkes were called Kipper, at least the male ones were. So you had Kipper Clarke, Kipper Clarke, Kipper Clarke, Brenda Clarke and Diane Clarke all in the same family.
