hello, Yes, that is a rather meek opening. Tigerxdare(a)aol.com mentioned <<it was alovlely band called joan of arc well theres an Irish band called Joan of Arse. I'm glad to see some of ya have cheered up a bit, the next time any of this happens just imagine b&s covering Kenickie's 'Punka' or 'Kandy Pop' by Bis ,how fantastic would that be? Anyway may nothing but happiness come through your door(obligatory mogwai content) , what is the vocal part in that song? 'keep hope alive ' ,'please hold the line'? I saw a certain Mr' Colburn on the telly the other night - collecting another award this time with Snowpatrol , he was seen nattering away to David Holmes - a remix on the cards surely? As for that smiths cover version album I'm just glad that b&s aren't going to be on an album with the deftones. More b&s content - I saw the new looper video , its kinda like the beasties Intergalactic video but with a budget of £2.37 , actually in truth its a bit shit. Then again look at my subject line, anybody admit to recognising that lyric? better go hide now, seamus ps going to see Plaid tonight (which I've learned is pronounced pladd as opposed to played), Are they any good? Honey told me I should try posting this again, and since I am on the digest I don't know if it posted, but I'll assume it didn't. If I'm wrong, I apologize. Now then... Now that my mom isn't sick anymore, let's talk about my REAL problem. I'm in love with someone. I have been for a long time now. I have mentioned her on this list before. She also happens to be my best friend. I love her. I'm pretty sure (95%) that she loves me. And yet nothing hppens between us. Why? Because she tells me she is scared. She wants guarantees from me, and they are guarantees I can not positively make. She won't live for the moment. She says, "what happens if we're together and I have to move to another city?" And I tried to make her understand that it would be more likely that we would remain together in any respect if we got together because if we got seperated as friends, I think that would really put a strain on our relationship. I don't do long distance well. I can't make any guarantees, but if you have 3+ years under the bridge with someone, don't you think that I would be willing to make a sacrifice? Of course I would, but I don't want to look that far ahead in the future. We are totally like that Go Sailor song Every Day; if you don't know it, I think this lyric describes us perfectly: Do I give my heart away? I do it every day It troubles me and I know it troubles you and the worst part is that I know you love me too. I know that's what bothers me the most--that i know she feels the same and she's just too scared to do anything about it. Any helpful comments or suggestions? Dear you lot, Whoops, I've just realised that you need to do some work at a university too. Dammit. Other people have realised this, as I realised when I got emailed two essays. Our teacher is a big fan of the "Inter-Net", and "Electronic E-Mail". He sounds like he is from The American Deep South (as opposed to the "Deep South of England" where I am located) too, where lots of books are censored. Best not tell him we get to read NOAM CHOMSKY books in politics. I bet they're banned too. Jason Andreas - how can you have spent your student loan if you don't have a bank account? Obviously if you haven't got an overdraft you haven't got a bank account from which you need to pay your SLC cheque into... that confuses me. I got my NEW AND IMPROVED bank account today, I expect my student loan cheque to arrive in 2003. Andy asked if Da Doo Ron Ron was any good, and I refer you to the summary conjured up upon the night : "Its like Night of the Living Dead, but with boogie". I feared for my life, being in the corner where the Big and Clever dancers were spinning about and generally showing off. No-one spun on their head though. But they were all veeery sweaty. Chris Geddes has cut his hair off and looks like a skinnier Graham from that Blur. Ooh, and Helen Shapiro was played at one point, and I had to dance to it by myself. I define Cool. Dr Pants: <<Wasn't the future supposed to be all about narrow-casting, with the media catering for finer and finer niche-markets?>> Ah, as a dirty old man once said, there's "no future". Aha! I have found that in Lunding town theres lots and lots of niche-markets catered for and no-one seems to notice it. Track & Field, a B&S themed night? Madness. Theres probably a place for ska as well. Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso were being Brazillian as well in some place. I like Gal Costa bucket loads me. And today in Kingston, there were two tramps howling "Wichita Lineman"! That was ace! I want to be a tramp when I grow up. A Japanese singing kung-fu monk meerkat tramp though. Damn, but I'd smell. Ok I'd prefer to be a higher class of Japanese singing kung-fu monk meerkat. Now THERES a niche market. One day, the media may cater a publication just for me. But I expect not. Hey, isn't this Sinister list our like, own niche-media, man? Text-based of course with the opportunity to become multimedia when we organise and create.... Speaking of which, I have decided to create something to rival Papercutz, and Tigerthingiewhateverthehellitwas that Lesley Jo did (which I saw a copy of the other day) and perhaps even the New Musical Express. My friend Ross is doing a Darkcore fanzine called "Schmerzen Horen" which will include an article dissecting the Pink Floyd influences in Trout Reznors music. I'm going to write for it as well. About... Comet Gain. I'll tell him that they really do work their Kraftwerk/SchoenLapBarfMusik/Avant-Rock influences to the max.... Mmmm, really tonal work with samplers... So now I'm going to do and read a chapter on reader response criticsm vs new criticsm (I think). Soon I will tell you exactly how HARD it is writing an essay, and I will be a commplete and utter student. Even though I'm finding most students to be total tossers! Cheers! I'm a little bewildered by this B&S mole who has burrowed his way into the Guardian's book review staff. Never heard of this Sukhdev Sandhu before. Cracking review. I hope it doesn't lead people to buy the novel and think 'this is pish - the records must be too'. I'm not showing much faith in this book am I? I will give it a try, honest. I just hope it's better than the last Scottish indie scene-related novel I read - 'Morvern Callar' by Alan 'Superstar' Warner. Someone on the list said it was great a while ago, which shocked me, because it isn't. Gosh, I'm getting beligerent in my old age. What will I be like when I reach 16? Tender as a bruise Nalda Said By Stuart David Rating: **** Sukhdev Sandhu Thursday October 21, 1999 Since the release of their first album, Tigermilk, in 1996 the Glaswegian group Belle and Sebastian have acquired a large audience of young and really not so young, boys and (especially) women. They're loved for their soaring, melancholic melodies; their funny, worldly lyrics; and, most of all, because their songs speak to the heart with knee-buckling emotional directness. The group also pursue extra-curricular projects. Most successful has been Stuart David who fronts Looper and has written two ludicrously charming books. The first, Little Ink Polaroids, was a collection of sketches of the pictures he would have liked to have taken. His first full-length novel, Nalda Said, conjures up the same kind of municipal tristesse as Belle and Sebastian. The unnamed narrator is a jewel thief's son brought up by his Aunt Nalda. His father, on the run from both the cops and his fellow crooks, visits him briefly and spoons him a diamond, smothered in milk and moulded bread, for safekeeping. As he grows up Nalda goes mad and he stumbles into an itinerant life, always upping and offing, fearful that his secret will emerge - he still carries the jewel inside him. Eventually he finds gardening work near a hospital. Here, in spite of his taciturn shyness, a nurse called Marie takes a shine to him. She spends most of the day wheeling around loonies who shout "How are your biscuits?" The rest of the time she tries to get "Reynard" to open up a bit and trust other people. Fearful that she's a secret agent, he struggles to break his vow of rhetorical chastity and tell her something about himself. It's an odd story, a care-in-the-community fairy tale. Slow and faltering, it has the artful artlessness of Daren King's recent Boxy an Star. Yet Nalda Said is far more disturbing - reading it I kept recalling the Gibbons twins, two schizophrenic sisters who decided as infants to become self-elective mutes. The novel shows how the stories we tell ourselves to ward off the panicky void can end up disabling us. It also gives a horribly realistic depiction of solitude. There's no teen angst or melodramatic self-flagellation here. Instead we're lured into pitying a narrator who fears human contact, who's unable to believe people might quite like him. David's insight into how easily we can waste our lives, impaled by longing and useless desire, produces passages of rare compassion. This is a deeply unfashionable book - not only in its subject matter but in its reticence, its emotional tactility. No matter. It's the novel Antoine Doinel, the buffeted hero of Truffaut's Les Quatre Cents Coups might have written. Tender as a bruise, it will be a friend indeed for those shivering in needy isolation this autumn. ? 2 posts on consecutive days I hear you gasp (or was it oh god not him again) well I'm affraid I've remembered what it was I wanted to say that I missed yesterday so here goes. With appologies to anyone this offends Degrassi wasn't actually very good. Admittedly though it is better than buffy which someone in here once claimed to be the greatest teen TV ever. Everyone who ever saw it though should know that the greatest teen TV ever was my so called life which followed a slightly depressed doc marten wearer through a couple of years of school and believe it or not actually used actors of the correct age rather than 20 somethings as schoolkids. It was kind of like blossom but with intelligent dialogue and real people (OK so it wasn't much like Blossom at all then). Also wanted to mention how cool peoples names are in here. i know, i never write to the list, but with talk of B&S, Degrassi, Donovan, Melanie, Neutral Milk Hotel, etc, etc, it becomes apparent that we all seem to have a lot in common... so, i'm reading this book and i am AMAZED. i'm sure that as soon as i say it, everyone will tell me that this is the most obvious masterpiece of our time and where have i been to have not read it before now? but i NEED to hear someone else's opinion on this piecce of beauty, keeping in mind that i am not at all finished it yet. enough. the book is called Little, Big and is by John Crowley. i found it in my dearest's car and not even he had read it. if anyone has not read it, maybe try to pick it up and we could do an Oprah-esque book discusion. please don't mock, i'm fragile. Aloha. Right,given that we (the kids) got an awful lot of terrible Canadian TV in our youth..Degrassi St,Degrassi Junior High,The Littlest Hobo,Kids in the hall et al. What I want to know is,do the Canucks get Scottish or English TV?....If not then count yourselves lucky as watching an episode of "High Road" or "Eastenders" drains the will to live. Yikes! I just went to buy a packet of cigarettes and the shopkeeper asked me if I was over 16. This hasn't happened since I was 24! When I was 13 I got into a 15 certificate film. There were no erect penises in it all, but Billy Crystal did use the f-word. Anyway, watertight logic leads me to the conclusion that I have not aged in the last 13 years. I thought that funny looking man I met all those years ago was just a loony to be humoured, but now I see that I might have got myself into all sorts of bother. Has anyone else on Sinister ever sold their soul to the devil?
