Sinister: stuart & stuart

It shouldn't have been for Belle to be the cheese to his dill pickle. It should have been Stuart and Stuart all along, like John and Paul. I like "Century of Elvis". It reminds me of the place where I live. I need reminding. Yesterday there was frost on my windshield when I was going to school and a man tapped on my window while I was trying to read the parking sign and said that his wife was having a baby and he needed a dollar. He said of the people he had approached before "... and they look at me like I'm black". But he was. It was a very interesting rhetorical device. It was strange. I hadn't thought to feel afraid until he said that. But these aren't the sort of things that the song reminds me of. We have a garden in the back and last week he came over and called my attention to the lavender growing in it, but this week he looks at me like I'm strange and leaves the office whenever I arrive. So the song reminds me of the good things like the garden and the lavender and the woodchuck that occasionally shows up and the two squirrels who are his cronies. It's true that you can't listen to the song too often, but it's like the difference between poetry and prose, rereading a book and - well you wouldn't even say rereading a poem. But don't you think near miracles could happen if they truly collaborated? (They might already but I don't think it's likely.) See the difference with Stuart is that the reports of what he is like in person is completely at odds with his sensibility as a songwriter, so you can't just accuse of being charming or t - well I always feel awkward using words like that. Have you seen the film "Naked"? I guess it was shown at Bowlie. Do you remember the man who never wanted to grow old? And there was David Thewlis looking - I was going to say old but I think he looked nice. The saintly haggard look suited him. So in hell everyone will look like a teenage boy and in heaven like Jesus. But I can see the temptation in it. I love the ache in Lloyd Cole's voice on songs like "Her Last Fling". Sinister: Attention: Ms. Other Music in NYC today around 5 P.M.

I may be condemned to the loser list after this post, but something splendid happened to me today. I was meandering in the Village searching for some tunes for the weekend and intent on purchasing Felt's "Forever Breathes the Lonely Word". The only record store in the Village to sell this record, to my knowledge, was Other Music (15 E 4th St.) at the expensive price of approximately $25.00. Suffice it to say, I do not typically have this quantity of dough to spend on a single record, but I made the exception for Lawrence. Regardless, I was sojourning in Other Music's La Decadanse (whatever the hell that means!) section which contains Felt's records, but "Forever Breathes the Lonely Word" was nowhere in sight. I was distraught but reluctantly continued to browse among the other Felt releases in stock. Next, I heard an Other Music employee directioning a customer in the direction of the Felt section. But I continued to browse with another set of hands to contend with in the tight confines of Other Music. I thought it polite to initiate conversation with my fellow Felt fan and said, "So, you like Felt too?" I looked up expecting a reply, and, to my delight, I gazed upon one of the cutest members of the opposite sex that I've ever had the pleasure to see. She had dark brown locks fashioned into a twee bob haircut with bangs to about to the middle of her forehead (incidentally, girls, I think that bangs are absolutely darling and it's a shame that so few of you currently sport this haircut ) and wearing a sky blue jumper beneath a brownish wool coat. And she had the most gorgeous blue eyes that I've ever laid eyes upon. Eyes that instantly make you forget the question that you had just asked and, evidentally, have the ineffable power to make me prattle about Felt incessantly, as I proceeded to spew comment after comment about every Felt item in stock, e.g. "Absolute Classic Masterpieces" vols. I and II, "Crumbling the Antiseptic Beatuty/The Splendour of Fear", and "Me and a Monkey on the Moon." I recommended which albums to buy and in which order, the quality (or lack thereof) of Lawrence's vocals on each release, the Deebank Felt vs. the Duffy Felt, and Felt's influence on subsequent groups like Belle and Sebastian. In retrospect, I haven't the slighest indication whether my erudition impressed her or created the impression that I'm merely a pretentious prig. Whether it was apparent to Ms. Other Music or not, my loquacity regarding Lawrence and crew was directly attributable to the fact that I could think of absolutely nothing else to blab about. Nonetheless, at my request, she purchased "Absolute Classic Masterpieces" vol. 2, as she had previosuly heard "Strange Idol Patterns and Other Short Stories" and seemed to like Lawrence's poppier side. After her purchase, we parted company and exchanged good-byes. I concluded our dialogue with the cheezy line "It was nice to meet another Felt fan". A sure way to pick-up the ladies, eh? Nevertheless, we never exchanged names and, immediately after she left, I thought of a thousand ways to continue our discussion, e.g. "If you have an e-mail, I can mail you the addresses of web sites with Felt info." But I am such a dim-witted goofball that this didn't even occur to me at the time! To cut to the chase, even if you've read little to none of the above, please read this. Ms. Other Music is probably an NYU student, and, when I inquired about how she heard of Lawrence and company, she mentioned that her friend owned "Strange Idols Pattern...". Therefore, if you go to NYU or live in the Village, and a friend fits the description mentioned above and comes bragging about the brilliance of Martin Duffy's keyboarding on "Absolute Classic Masterpieces" vol. 2., please forward her this e-mail! But if that twee Felt kitten is reading this post, then, if you're interested in me or just Lawrence, please respond by email (markniciu(a)hotmail.com) And, in case your wondering why in the world I am posting this to Belle and Sebastian lists, many new fans have discovered Felt through the influence of Belle and Sebastian's lyrics and liner notes. Chances are that if Ms. Other Music's friend likes Felt, she probably listens to B&S as well and, fortuitously, is a member of a B&S list. I have a theory about Belle & Sebastian and other bands with similar delicate musical/vocal complexities. It is nearly impossible to listen to well-crafted songs from Belle & Sebastian while people are conversing or socializing. In fact, the more distracted a person is during a B&S song, the more they become annoyed by the music... because B&S requires a certain concentration (especially for those who are new to the style). I get so mad when people (like my older brother) insist on listening to Sheryl Crow type shit in the car, instead of my favorites. But Sheryl Crow is crappy enough to have a discussion over, isn't it? You'd think that at age 21, I would have a musical-say on a silly car-trip. But I'm sabotoging my conservative brother with good music: I gave him Wilco "Summerteeth" for his Birthday. An angry temper can almost destroy the B&S listening experience; frustration + "Fox in the Snow" for most people will poison opinions of B&S if they are taken too early in the musical relationship. Is anybody else very careful about whom they introduce B&S to? I mean, you really have to be careful because soft and twee can become explosive in the wrong hands. Some quick questions (and I'm sorry if they've been asked before): 1. Which author dedicated which book to a "Century of Fakers" (or is this another fictional lyric)? Is there really a book called _The State that I am In_? 2. Are the rumours true that B&S don't get along very well? Have they really been fighting, and did they really have an argument on stage that reduced Stuart to tears? Does anybody else find it disconcerting that one of the band members describes B&S as "dysfunctional"? 3. Is there a certain general B&S fashion style, such as glasses and cardigan? Just wondering... 4. Why does Tigermilk sound 100 times better in the car? To end, I'm happy because I discovered Beulah (especially song #5), Harry Potter books, and American Beauty all in the same month! I will see "Fight Club" next because I'm am the definitive socialist-poser; political and economical rebellion makes the story of Stuart and gang much more fascinating. Down with capitalism, eh? DULL APOLOGIES firstly a long overdue sorry for what probably would win any award for the dullest longest 'post' that i sent a few months back. secondly, a slightly embarrassed & *confused* apology for any sinister-type who witnessed the product of my having consumed (scarily too few) beers, seen villa lose to sunderland with the help of classic crap refereeing, and being bored waiting for looper to appear. (& thanks ?? for tix via martin) i think my explanation for what in a work (mental health) setting i would readily lable 'bizarre & inappropriate' behaviour, was (i think/hope?) taking up a dare to shout mr popkins name across the heads of the chattering looper masses. or at least that'll do as an excuse. oh well, normal service will be resumed ASAP. jim (purple trousers & face) P.S. on a B&S content note, our beloveds have been regularly creating lovely art room vibes in my art & craft groups on the ward, and i have furthered my set of velvet underground figures made of clay (though definitely not lifesize). surely what art room tape decks are made for??? (along with joni mitchell's blue, and enough (generally patient's own) dub&reggie to keep mr hopkins happy for many lifetimes.) The peak of our clients' non-existent b'n's frenzy, was my having printed out lyrics to 'fox in the snow' for a good old sing-a-long to tape bit of a music group when Steve Arlene (did you like the tape Sam?) couldn't make it to do the music group so i had to cobble together a last minute thingy. Of note, i've never had a negative reaction to B&S on the ward in two years of occasional brainwashing the punters, and have run off one or two copies.... which just goes to show what exquisite taste user's of the mental health service have. looks like i've started posting every day. if any of you have problems with that, let me know and i'll shut up. B&S: they were playing tigermilk yet again in the campus store yesterday. the novelty has worn off and since i've yet to find out who's responsible, it's just getting irritating. why don't they play sinister or maybe one of the EPs? must it always be tigermilk? it's a great album, sure, but that's got to get a little irritating after a while. did any of you read the onion a few weeks ago when the cover story was something along the lines of: cafe employee just lets paul simon "graceland" play for a fifth time." that's how i feel about the folks in the campus store here. so it seems my comment about needing a fuck seems to have shocked at least one of you. Sinister: Get back (I'm evil)

Pink Ladies and jet boys, I walked around London today teaming bright red socks with vintage heels and foolishly expected people not to laugh. By the end of the day tounges were being stuck out in defence. It was quite nice when someone asked myself and beau if she could take our picture, (simalarly to PamelaBooze Explosion's experience) though I was wishing I hadn't pratted about sticking a £1.99 sticker on my face minutes before as looking in a mirror later I noticed a nice circular red mark had been left on my cheek. What a stunner! I bought some records from Rough trade, who didn't infact serve me roughly as I had hoped, and were rather namby pamby and polite. I bought records from one extreme to another. The Trembling Blue Stars 'do wap' music, and Lolita storm's goodbye america/get back (I'm evil). Lolita storm is LOUD and proud and purposefully recorded in a very, very crap way. To be honest, it's all a bit Diana Spencer Mine explosion. I think the trembling Blue stars are very pretty, and very nice. Though lots of pretty and nice things are also very, very boring. Give me glamour! Give me Drama! Give me blood and sweat and tears, fits and starts and broken hearts - but *don't* give me nice. Gawd, Autumn and drippy records, what a miserable pair. kerry said: >wow. i really need a fuck. *sigh* Which is nice. I really need a haircut.
