Sinister: Anyone in Manchester going to Meet-up?

Hello everybody, I have not been on the list for some time now. I have recently began university in Manchester, and live on Oxford Road. I was strolling down the road the other day, when I suddenly abruptly stopped: I had seen a poster for a B&S Meet up here in Manchester! I have not yet met anyone who knows, likes, or has even heard of Belle & Sebastian since being here - despite wearing my badge! Because Manchester is a big bad scary place, and the Meet up is quite a way from where I live, I was wondering if there was anyone out there that I could meet up with to go to the event. I would be most grateful if anyone who doesn't mind meeting me could tell me - I'm sure everyone would prefer it if you mailed straight to me rather than the list! (I have been away, but I remember little things like that!) I'm sorry if my mail isn't relevant to the current list, and that I don't really know anybody on the list anymore, but I would really like to go to this meet up, and I'd rather not go alone. Hello, you fools, I love you Why does nobody talk about the golden age of girl groups on this list? We were out at Da Doo Ron Ron at Po Na Na (infantile? us?) the other night to see Beanz Geddes and the Divine Symington play Northern Soul and other records by The Verve. It was great! They played my request (for the mighty Doris) and Stevie Jackson said hello. And Susannah was there too! Much better than that Dave Stewart Looper bloke on Monday and nary a techno-pagan octopus in sight. Why does Peter Miller never tell us when he's about to come to Britain? Does he have something to hide? Do you believe in life after love? Or, more importantly, in life after rock and roll? I always thought that once you've gone down the proverbial dumper, the only option open to a drummer is becoming a mini-cab driver. But I was talking to a friend the other day about back problems, and she told me that her new chiropractor is Terry Chimes AKA Tory Crimes AKA the sometime drummer for The Clash. What a sensible chap. Chiropracty seems like a rather perilious career path for someone who's used to bashing away at bass drums, but fair play to the bloke. Does anyone else know of rock'n'roll animals who have settled down to get proper jobs? I like to imagine that Slash might one day see the error of his ways, get a pension plan and decide to become an orthodontist. For Simon who was asking about clubs in Lahndan on a Friday: tonight there's another Track and Field at the Betsey Trotwood pub on Farringdon Road. I was woken this morning by the dulcet tones of Melody Maker journalist Whispering Ben Clancy. Fortunately he was on the radio rather than in my bed, talking about MM on GLR. Both once-venerable institutions seem to be heading for the dumper at the moment: the BBC plans to turn GLR into another 24-hour talk and rolling news station with phone-ins for people who like to complain about dog mess on pavements, and this week's sampler for the new-look MM seems to have sold its soul to sports-rock and taken its design cue from the Innovations catalogue. Wasn't the future supposed to be all about narrow-casting, with the media catering for finer and finer niche-markets? In which case there should be a radio station that only broadcasts Baxendale, Mary Margaret O'Hara and Debussy and a magazine for Muji-wearing thirty-something Donald Barthelme fans. As it is, there isn't a single listenable radio station and every pop/film/etc magazine in the world seems to have a naked bird on the cover and an identical editorial policy. What a sack of arse. Sorry for ranting, but sometimes there's a place for stating the bleeding obvious. I am intrigued to hear the verdict on Nalda said - it got some kind of amazing review in the Guardian yesterday (obviously by Dastoor under a pseudonym). But I'd also to be interested to hear the word on Gregory's Two Girls... anyone? Thank you for your interest in my love life and burgeoning media career. Sinister: A quick hello

I'm very busy right now but I just had to write, I've just got past the nursery and enjoyed reading all your posts. I'm supposed to be looking on the net for information about a set design course at Kingston, I'm making a film set miniature for my first 3rd year project, I'm a model maker btw, and this girl on my course keeps pestering me to help her print things and generally use the computer, we've been doing it for over two years now but I guess some people never get used to useing them. About B&S: I have been listening to Belle & Sebastian for years now, I just never got around to subscribing to this lovely list so I never met anyone else who liked them, people are strange, except for Steve (Carsmile). Unfortunately my collection is not complete as I only have a record player (it is of the highest quality but as a student it will be a while before I can afford such modern conveniences as CD players to add to my system), it's a matter of preferance really. This means I do not own a copy of Lazy Line Painter Jane, if anyone can help with this I would love to hear from you. I haven't followed the music press or kept a close eye on the internet for quite a while now so it seems I have missed out on some promising sounding stuff, I tend to go to a little record shop in St Albans called Woodstock Records and he generally knows what I like. People keep mentionig Gentle Waves and Looper, I'll have to look into this. I'm sorry I can't really comment on any of the current issues on the list as I have not read much this week, it really has been hectic with proposal deadlines looming, but that will change. Anyone in the general area Hatfield, St Albans or just around London or Hertfordshire, I'd be interseted to hear from you, I'm OK really, just ask Steve (even if he is of questionable character, he did bugger off to Bowlie without me after all, the git). Sinister: B&S on a Smiths tribute album ? check out....

Hi, sinisterland: Straight to the point: this is a message that I got from a guy from a record label, who wants to release an Smiths tribute album on may 2000. I read that Cinerama were supposed to cover "London", and when I posted it to the Morrissey-solo website, I got this answer: Hi there, Cinerama have already covered it! I have the DAT in the office. It is going to be on The First Time Records. A Tribute To The Smiths - "I Know It's Over" (tft 001/007). Also appearing will be The Cardigans, Supergrass, Cinerama, Kent, Ida, Quicksand, The Deftones, Jejune, Cobolt, Billy Bragg, Super Furry Animals, Versus, Pop Unknown, The Gloria Record, Sleater-Kinney, and many more. 20 bands total. We tried very very very hard to get Belle and Sebastian, but they turned us down...they are easily one of my favorite bands, that is why I'm saddened that they turned me down...such a pity...I just thought I'd put that in seeing as your e-mail address is of the aforementioned! We would still love to have them, I'm going to try to call their management again sometime soon. Interesting, isnŽit ? On the topic of banning films, I can say that this film from the Studio 54 disco was showed here with the advertising of "The only country in the world where you shall see the whole version", or something similar. I donŽt know if the movie was so "scandalous" (I donŽt know if itŽs the right word, my engliz iz ztill cdap), as I didnŽt showed any interest on watching it. So, the Stu interview wasnŽt taped by anyone ? IŽd be quite delighted on hearing it. In other topics, iŽm excited about watching Tindersticks + Arab Strap at the Lovely "Palau de la musica", tomorrow evening. However, I find "Simple pleasures" a bit disappointing. It sounds more like Frank Sinatra than Nick Cave (without having nothing against Sinatra). ItŽs Arab StrapŽs "Elephant shoe" quite different from the slightly boring "Philophobia" ? Is it worth buying it ? or should I try with Ben & Jason ? Well, have a fab weekend everybody. Hello, I've been reading your goings on for two weeks now while I waited in purgatory to be given a voice. My name is Kevin Parker, I know Kevin is not a particularly great name, though I suppose Kevin Shields and Kevin Rowland have given it back some dignity. My mother wanted to call me Luke!I am from Shrewsbury in England but I live and work in Tokyo where I think B&S are reasonably popular the reissue of "Tigermilk" seems to have sold really well HMV had these really cool promotional stickers aswell. Did you know there is a BMX Bandits tribute band here? Anyway Belle and Sebastian content I love them they remind me of when I heard Kid Jensen play "This Charming Man" or how excited I used to get when Janice Long would say "Tonight in session we have Felt". Yes I am old Is 30 old? but I mention this merely to say that B&S make me feel really young when I hear them or maybe they just make me feel warm and hopeful and you really only feel like that when you're young don't you?I could go on about The Go-Betweens and The Pastels and Felt but I suspect everyone on this list has similar taste in music books etc which is why people sign up in the first place.Regarding the censorship debate you've been having I think either people ought to admit that censoring is always a subjective process and always subject to personal prejudice.For example I would dearly love to dump the Cure and Suede in the dustbin of history and solder the lid shut for eternity. Or people should decide never to censor anything and I mean anything, one or the other.People can't simply pretend that censorhip is based on objective judgements as the Daily Mail would have us believe.If any of you are in the vicinity, I mean Tokyo way, send me a message It can get a little lonely out here my flatmate likes Poison the band not as some sort of after dinner drink.The cafe where I am is playing Kiss "Crazy ,Crazy Nights" and I think I like it. My friend Paul R is visiting and Strange Fruit is no longer running. Which is crap cos it wasn't. B & S content = They used to play Me & The Major. Twice last time in fact, which was nice.
