What is StuartM doing now? Maybe we can draw him in with all this religion talk. In Kevin Smith's movie Dogma, he championed the idea that religion is a source of a great many problems in the world and that it would help if we all recognize our religions using a less absolute term: "beliefs". My opinion is that the point about God, in all religions, being some sort or fictitious character designed to strike fear in the masses isn't all true. Its certainly true for Christianity though. I don't think Buddha or some of the other Eastern religions have communicated their God in this way. Its part of the reason I'm curious about Eastern religions. Its seems positive. Hindu's believe that they will eventually become part of the "great spirit" when they make it there through many reincarnations into a better, more stoic, person each life. David's point on religion is spot on: taking action, doing something good, is better than talking about it. But I would also say that going to church and the whole bit is also a good thing because it may inspire those who choose do this to become better people (and to subsequently, take action). Sorry about all the religion talk. I bet some of you on the list are puking right now - wanting a secular sinister list. I think that There's Too Much Love is one of the top five songs Belle&Seb has written. The ending to that song is magical. Crappy B&S content, I know. There HAS to be another single, ep or something in the future because it looks like no activity for well over the next year. Can I keep my interest in this group for that long without something? I'm going to Ocean City, Maryland for the remainder of the week to drink beer, play golf and chase women! Oh, and listen to Belle & Sebastian on the beach with my headphones. I'm not against religious people but I do wish they wouldn't foist their opinions on those who are not interested (like that Gouranga lot who literally chase you down the street). I always try to put religion into perspective by thinking of all the trouble it causes between different cultures and how different it might be if it were not for religion. And of course the question that is guaranteed to shut up any religious person: "If there is a God, why do people die in plane crashes?" I've never heard anybody justify that one. Lawrence also makes some interesting points about the good people have done (Mother Teresa et al) but is it not the case that people do good things sometimes just because they are good people and not necessarily cos they are religious? Why does spouting forth about religion make somebody a better person than say the bloke in the street that buys a Big Issue or puts a pound in a charity box but never goes to church. For every Baptist minister that lets prostitutes stay in his house, there are thousands of non-religious people who do good things but we tend to ignore them and look for the bad bits of our society cos it makes more interesting news headlines. **Jobs** I've been looking for a job recently and have been pissed off by the attitude of some companies towards applicants for graduate positions. Take today for instance I phoned Vodafone having seen their graduate application bit on their website which asked applicants to phone before applying. I phoned them up and they asked what my first degree was in. I did chemistry for my sins so I told her that and she said the only positions for people with a chemistry degree were in finance. I told her that didn't interest me but that I had a postgrad degree in IT and wanted a job in that field. But she insisted they only judged people on their first degree and that I could only apply for finance (although the website told me they were looking for IT people). What is the point of that? If I wanted a job based on my first degree I wouldn't have done a postgrad course. Another major consultancy firm told me they weren't interested in me cos I "didn't meet the criteria for career focus and leadership potential". Now I may not be brilliant but how the f*ck can they deduce this on the strength of a bloody application form? I could appreciate their sentiments if they had bothered to meet me and made the effort to find out my career focus and leadership potential but they didn't. Ah, Flanders and Swann, hippopotomi etc... PICNICs are GRATE. Hello to all the lovely people i met on Saturday. What was the final score in the football anyway? It's a shame that Magda didn't turn up, I would really have liked to meet her, or did i just miss her? Sitting in the Spread Eagle is also grate, at least it is when surrounded by lovely sinisterines (and ex-members too). Although one should be very careful about how much gin one drinks, mentioning no names ;) Thank you to the kind oxford ladies for hints and tips on oxlife, although I am getting serious jitters about having to camp out in South Park for a couple of weeks. I mean I hate house hunting at the best of times, but under a deadline just makes it even pooier. LAWRENCE wrote possibly the most honest and touching defence of the church i've read in a long time. As a completely non-religious (as opposed to anti-religious) person, I tend not to pay much attention to that kind of thread, but he did put it very well. I'd also noticed that struan was the only one not mentioned on Neil's list of what the band are doing this summer, maybe he's polishing his big black muscle car. Maybe he's cruising round in it, trying to pick up "chicks" outside the pictures. Maybe he's wearing a tight white t-shirt and getting all oily under the "hood" fiddling with his pistons. Oh sorry, I seem to have been possessed by the spirit of Gen Wesley :) Maybe he's going to <cough> spend the summer wasting, oh dear, sorry. TALL GIT YAY, for tall gits. For those of you who don't remember Stuart G the first time around, i'd recommend a trawl through the archives, as he is a lovely man, and very tall. Hello everyone :) I suddenly feel nervous, I've done this loads before, but be gentle. I thought I would post since I haven't in a while. I went to the first half of the London picnic, which was lots of fun, so thanks to the people who organised it and stuff, and hi to everyone I met there. I had to go home a bit earlier than I might have liked to go babysitting, eurgh. Someone was talking about people laughing at books while they're on underground trains, which is ironic because the woman opposite me on the tube back was laughing at a book, it was by Bridget Jones. Should that be? She probably looked perfectly sensible compared to me almost sobbing when A Century of Fakers came on my walkman. Ok, I didn't really sob (thank god), but that song always makes me feel sad, which is stupid I know. Guildford recently got it's first Starbucks, which is mildy interesting cos you would have thought a town this big would have had one for a while, but other than that it's a completely boring fact. Right here goes, a crap poem: Ode to Laura Llew (composed out of fear of her wrath) Laura Llew, the alluring lady of the listcrush, whose leaving leaves the list lamenting a loss, lives a life of loveliness in libra*. But whose own loveliness has the lasses lime with longing, for the lads of the list lust for her lushiousness. But such levity lends them to alliterative limericks** that never get finished because they run out of words. God how embarrasing is that. Sorry if you find that offensively crap, dear Laura, but you were demanding poetry (now you know why you shouldn't make careless wishes, you might just get what you ask for). I think I will send it anyway since I might as well give you all something to laugh at me for. The lovely Laura Llew was also looking for book recommendations. I would say the dictionary is a very handy one, particularly when attempting to write alliterative poetry, which we do all the time of course. I seem to have use our Lord's name in vain twice during this post. I won't go into a big theological discussion (hopefully), but I really must say I agree with whoever said he didn't see why you have to be the people God wants you to be. I don't see why you shouldn't be what you want to be, like native Americans (or Aborigines, or African tribes or pagans or hippies) don't believe in having to do what some omnipotent being says, and they're not the ones who are building nuclear weapons and stuff. I'm not saying you shouldn't be Christian or anything, it's you're own choice, so probably none of this is worth saying, so I'll stop now. Just a quite note to say I think Canada is a great place too, even though I've never been there. Fraser off Due South is a bit of a hero of mine. America is cool too though, it's got a nasty stereotype of being cold and capitalist, but you can't judge a country by it's politicians, it's full of cool people who want to be Canadian. It's a pretty difficult one to stick up for sometimes, but I'm going to try. Right. Where do I start? Firstly, his comment about God as "some fictional character designed to strike fear into the hearts of the masses". Actually, you'd be hard pressed to find a culture which doesn't have a some concept of God. Whether what you say above is true or not, you can't blame God on Christians. Next. The Christian church has done loads of terrible, evil things in the past. True. But again, this is *people*, and often people, even with good intentions, get the wrong end of the stick and do terrible terrible things for what they believe in. However, Christians have done lots of good too ... here they feed, clothe and shelter the homeless people in Auckland that no one give a damn about. A Baptsit Minister I know has a whole bunch of prostitutes living with him and his wife and kids because they have nowhere to go at night when they finish work. Look at Mother Theresa ... and the civil rights movement. Look at the beauty in the writings of people like C.S Lewis and Tolkien. Some of you may know that New Zealand was the first country to give women the vote - and this was achieved largely by a group of militant Chrisitan women. For every flag-burning, red-necked abortion clinic blower-upper there are hundreds of good people who are doing all they can to help people make their lives better. Unfortunately, the above mentioned lunatic militants, and the "old bald ministers" that Wayne mentioned happen to be the public face of Christianity for so may people. Which is a tragedy. "We know we are not the people you want us to be, we are not the people we want to be" Actually I couldn't agree more. When I think of all the people I could have helped - all the means things I've said which I shouldn't have - I really am not the person I want to be. And I have never personally met anyone who is. (I'm not saying *no one* is). I guess for me that's the essence of Christianity for me. Knowing that, despite my failings, God loves me. I'm going to shut up now ... or else get myself crucified (pardon the pun) for turning Sinist*r into a theology discussion group. I don't know if I've in any way adequately addresses Wayne's issues, but hopefully he'll realise we're not all as bad as the guy from "The Kirkin' of the Laddie". Wayne Fortune (or Ba Ba) also mentioned Nick Drake. Glad you've discovered him. Sinister: the future of names

Comrades. I've been bitten by the insomnia bug and have decided to let my mind wander... Random Thought for the Day: I was recently browsing around on the Internet and keep getting little messages, "Hello wmh74" or "Greetings wmh74." It was a little spooky, but it sparked a thought. Perhaps, in some Orwellian future, we will all be known by our e-mail addresses. This will be OK for people with pretty neat-o names (pixidustlady I'm thinking of you). For far too many of us who were too lazy or uncreative or just plain tired of trying different names, we will be cursed with names like "wmh74." "Oh, hello wmh74. How are you today?" Ugh. I suppose these names will be like the name Smith or Jones (or Harris) now. Thoughts on this lame little hypothesis? Belle and Sebastian content: I haven't yet chimed in on my take of the new album. I suppose I've got nothing new or witty to add... I *like* it. A lot. But I don't love it like the other albums. Yet. There doesn't seem to be a real flow in the sequence of the songs. It's jumpy. Not too fond of Isobel's tunes either. I was wondering about "The Chalet Lines" though. Why do you think Stuart chose to sing the song instead of one of the lasses? I can see why they might be worried Isobel's girlish/sweet/breathless voice might not fit the subject matter (i.e. make it sound too cute), but it might also serve as a shattering judgement... if it was sung in a kind of thin/transparent way, it could imply (tonally) a loss of innocence--a kind of reminder of childhood (of idealisms formed therein) and its new absence from the character's life. Maybe I'm making too much of this and I'm sure you've all had your say on the subject, but what of it? What do you make of Stuart singing the tune? "Women's Realm" and "There's Too Much Love" make me smile. This is a very good thing, of course, esp. since "There's Too Much Stress" might be the title song of my life lately. I'm interested in hearing what people think about the Amphetameanies (sp?). Haven't heard them yet...what they like? That's enough for now. I think I'll go read and try to fall asleep. I'm not exaggerating. Also John Gardiner's "Grendel."
