Sinister: This may be a rant...

Hi sinister people, Well, how are you all? I've not posted for ages - not for any real reason, other than laziness. So no action until 2001, lets be honest - it's hardly surprising... I fear that this post might turn into a big rant about how wrong Christianity is, so I'll try and avoid it. I can't... You see, I was playing the bagpipes last night at the local "Civic Week" (don't get me started on that!) parade known as "The Kirkin' of the Laddie". Anyway, we (the general public) were stood outside the war memorial listening to this old, bald minister lecture us about various aspects of life when he burst into some prayer about how "God, we know we are not the people you want us to be, we are not the people we want to be, so forgive us". I almost burst out laughing - I don't think I need to prove myself to anyone, let alone some fictional character designed to strike fear into the hearts of the masses! And all this "not the people we want to be" - what is with that? Fair enough, I'm probably not my ideal picture of myself (I'd like to get on with my parents better), but I won't have some bald guy stand in front of me and tell me to ask for forgiveness! well, me and my three brain cells thought we'd say hello this morning. i would first like to appologize publicly to redgeisha...i went to xmen all dressed up in my new b&s tshirt (the purple ampersand ones are huge btw) and found the right bar for vanity fair and everything...but i was early, 11.30 and couldn't find you, got extremely shy and left... i love my new b&s tshirt, me and the 3 brain cells forgot we ordered it, so boom...we opened my mailbox and there it was. so b&s are busy boys and girls now aren't they...maybe gentle waves will come here and play...isobel on a little promo tour...we won't poison you this time, promise. i think isobel is loverly...i have her picture as my desktop wallpaper at work, and she gets lot's of compliments... funny thing happened at the fringe on saturday night...i went to this excellent fringe festival play called Perfect Strangers, but it had a little surprise for me, nudity...i felt like i was 13 or something. as a flamingly gay manboy, i rarely come into contact with real boobs, and these were in fact real and pendulous. my maturity went out the door, and i don't know why...how embarrassing...that and my little bald man's tummy doing somersaults during the silent ending... well, i hope everyone's picnics go well...i wish we could have them, but with the current policing trend we'd prolly get arrested for loitering...our loverly parks are pretty much open air campgrounds for quite intelligent squeegee kids... ummm...yeah bye. a. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. I have just read Laura Llew's post. Oh Laura, why didn't you come see me?? So many extra beds and no roommates...although if in a pinch for a dead girl we could use one of the Lawn Gilandites down the hall. Come back to New York!! All the cool kids are doing it, like Marie-ree and Christiaan "Plastic Cow" Lampinen. Being bad at thinking of times and places, I've decided to organize the New York Sinister picnic around Damon. So here are the details: Date: Damon Time: Damon Location: Damon There will be ants on a log and fluff sandwiches, maybe some watercress too. I've laundered all the red and white checked blankets I own and purchased Pin The Tail On The Donkey at a party store. It's going to be really great. Can't wait to see you all. (Note: There will be a real picnic, and it will still revolve around Damon but there will be a name for the location and an actual day for the date. And ants on a log, still.) I am getting sick of FAKERS in Belle & Sebastian t shirts. The other day walking to school, I saw a boy in a Study at Stow t shirt, and I took my headphones off and said "Hey, I like your shirt". He looked at me like I was crazy. Then yesterday, at Other Music, an employee was wearing a Study at Stow shirt, and Phil "I was the latest list member for a minute" Oh was talking to him. I said "Hey, I like your shirt". He said "I am so embarrassed to be wearing this. They are horrible and boring." I started crying. Then he talked Phil out of buying the Stars ep and I cried harder til I thought my heart would break. Maybe I just need a new approach? If "Hey, I like your shirt" isn't working, should I use "Hey, give me your shirt or you'll never see your lovely dog again"? After all, I don't have a Study at Stow shirt myself. Will Porter, will you draw me a sheep? And will you come and live on my little planet with me? I have two volcanoes and a rose. Marie and I have matching pants. We are hardcore. Firstly, I'm really surprised that this has caused anything like a fuss. I can understand what it's like waiting to see a band. The Pixies are my favourite band ever, and I waited ages to see them. I finally got the chance once, when they played the SECC in Glasgow. Unfortunately, the stage collapsed after two songs (Francis had been on the pies again) and the gig was cancelled. The Pixies split up and I never saw them again. The thing is, bands disappear for years at a time all the time. B&S have given us four albums in as many years. That's pretty prolific. Admittedly live gigs have been fairly scarce, but I don't think anyone's ever tried to disguise the fact that B&S aren't a touring band. For the moment though, they're just having some time off. Nick was spot on when he quoted Stuart's "playing in the band isn't a job that seven people's lives have to revolve around". There will be another Gentle Waves LP in the autumn. Beans & Stevie are both playing with V-Twin, who have a single out in September. The Amphetameanies album is just out, and that's keeping Mick busy. Richard and his mate have recorded a single under the name of the Magic 8. Richard & Mick are both playing with Snow Patrol too. Stevie is playing with the Bill Wells Octet. Beans is helping Astrid in the studio, and has two clubs to run. Everyone has always had plenty of other things to do. When the break is over, everyone will get back together and rehearse for live dates. This will probably take a while, as the band only did two gigs in '99 and none in 2000. They'll keep rehearsing until they're absolutely sure they're doing it the best way possible. Then they'll tour, and you'll enjoy it because it will be brilliant. Much better than if they rushed out and did it now, before they were ready. We're sorry to keep you waiting. Please be patient, and maybe it'll be worth the wait. Hey Sinister People, Are you all well? And dandy? I'm not too bad, cept it's a little cold. You know the picnic in Sheffield on Saturday? I was in Manchester on Saturday morning and I saw a 95 bus going to Simister. And my vision was a little skewed and I was a probably still a little bit drunk, and my shoes were on the wrong feet and all that kind of stuff, and for about three seconds, I really believed that 'Simister' read 'Sinister'. Everything kind of clicked into place and I imagined the bus as a clunky, puffy old Charlie's Bus, crawling through country lanes over to Sheffield, driven by a twinkly-eyed cheeky Pilsbury DoughBoy in flares and a cap, honking the horn, and the back seats full of kids licking apple butter off each others' fingers. Stopping off various bakers' on the route, before letting everyone pile off to roll about for a few hours before taking 'em back to Manchester. But then everything cleared, and all I saw was a dusty old bus dragging itself out to Simister. Sheesh. I had a cracking weekend though. A Room For Romeo Brass is out on video next month. I've checked the archives and I know it's been mentioned on the list and I'm sorry to mention it again, but it really is fantastic. The use of B&S on the soundtrack is perfect, you get the feeling that Shane Meadows... um... gets it. Y'know, the sense of malevolence and of implicit violence and of things not being quite right that crops up in SM's lyrics. It's my favourite film this year, definitely. I've got a funny, queasy feeling about B&S not doing anything for a year. When I first heard "Dirty Dream#2" live I misheard "comedian" as "chameleon" and convinced myself it was about Stuart wishing he'd been in The Chameleons and stayed a perennially romantic underacheiver. I was sure it was code that something was wrong. I know I was wrong, but I've got that same, queasy feeling again. Oh, and before I forget, on Wednesday 5th July 2000 at 19:38GMT Emily Bishop said: >I don't want to turn into some mithering old woman... And I thought "You've been nothing but that since Percy left, and even then you were the weak link..." It's late and I have to be up early tomorrow. Sinister: the word "ace"

It's interesting to see the lovely UK residents use "ace" as a positive adjective, where a lot of us across the pond in the colonies use it in a different sense. At least in my little circle of friends, we use "ace" as a slightly more polite "ass". It's not as churchy as "butt" (not that butt can really be "churchy" either...), but it's less vulgar than "ass". Example: (as girl in bikini walks by) "Look at THAT ace!" Example 2: "stick it up your ace" Please excuse the profanity, as well as the pseudo-profanity... Sinister: B&S and the flaming hand

Comrades. Thought I'd take a plunge into the slightly frightening and sinister world here as I got out of the nursury a week or so ago. Yes...yet another babe. I suppose I could chime in about the whole Floyd thread, but you all seem to be doing quite nicely on that front. Instead, I think I'll just tell a little story about how B&S found me (or vice versa). If you get annoyed at silly stories, please skip this post. About three years ago, I was sitting in the vulgar and shady backyard of my friend's parents place (she had just graduated college or something and we were all celebrating). I didn't really know a lot of the people there and those that I did know, I tried to avoid. Another friend of mind (Josh) was there and so we retired to the corner of the yard with our beverages and started to shoot the proverbial breeze, etc. The night wore on and on and Josh started to tell me of this wonderful, shiny new CD he had bought (B&S of course--IYFS). When he went to go get the CD from his car or wherever he had the thing stashed (perhaps I'd rather not know this) and retrieve a portable CD player, a few other folks wandered by. One of them (Jay) was one of those morons who don't quite know they are morons, but somewhere deeply buried in their psyche they have a vague sensation that they actually *might* be. Does that make sense? Like he feels slightly goofy for being so thick-skulled, but he does nothing to stop it (if you feel I'm being overly judgemental please read on). So there we were. Sitting under a large oak tree, drinking and (eventually) listening to Belle and Sebastian. It was wonderful. From the first tenative "Make a new cult everday to suit your affairs" I knew this was special. Until Jay began to get rather sloppily drunk and decided he would do a shot of something or other and light it on fire. Jay took his bottle and poured a very full shot and a bunch of the alcohol spilled onto his hand and arm. He giggled and took out a lighter (I tried to warn him I swear). Well, of course, phoof. Right when I was really digging "Like Dylan in the Movies"...Jay's waving his flaming hand in the air fueling the flames and they grew and grew and we yelled at him to smother the flames (Oh how alcohol burns!) and he's just got this kind of bemused look on his face like this is the coolest thing he's ever seen and not really worried that the flames are starting to dart up his arm toward his shoulder. Finally I jumped up and took off my shirt (not for the faint hearted) and smothered the flames. It took a few seconds and Jay is laughing 'cause he's so drunk and rather a moron anyway (do you see now?). Well...the drama really added to the music (not that it really needs it). But we sat back down and I thought how nice it was to have "found" a new band that was soooo fey and silly and beautiful and not at all like Jay and his singed hand. That's all for now. We got him to the hospital and they wrapped up his 2nd degree burns and that's the last I saw of him. PPS--Am in Chicago now, but will be moving to Seattle in mid-August. Sinister: Ease your feet in the sea

Dear all: I see the 1400 or so of you must be doing well unlike myself,given the increase of posting during my absence last week.As some alternative formulation of that toast theorem,if one does not check his/her mailbox for 5 days,Sinister will be resuscitated to the good old babbling days and even Adrian Evans shall make a come back from the Devonic era challenging geological assumptions. Perhaps induced telephatically by Ms A. Campbell's wit and wisdom,we spent the British & Continental International Day of the Picnic in the shockingly flatlands of Lincolnshire,that is,SKEGGY.Nottingham,starting with its railway station,looks truly grand and debonair by comparison when I came back this evening.I promise I will appreciate the existence of shops not called Derek's Fab Ice Creams or Bargain-LessaPound-Land in the next future. However,an oxidated shelter in Skegness' promenade is as Kitchen Sink drama as it is possible to go.No irony possible when you are surrounded by people 4 years younger than you with 4 kids to carry.No better scenario for a day as today. I got home and played whatever it was in my Hi-Fi while I walked in circles in my new servant-like room.It was Tigermilk,the very first tape I was given by the first person I met from this list...On the verge of tears while 'We rule the School','My Wandering..',and 'Mary Jo',finally the extra bit at the end of Side A with 'The Loneliness of the Mid-Distance runner' turned out to be uplifting enough,I plucked up courage,left the house to enjoy the last sunshine of this Sunday,and went to check my mail.And Sinister was here,debating how shite Pink Floyd were or not,inviting to meet up with Peter Sellers in Bar-Cel-Ona,gnawing cheese with Field Mice,getting drunk without help. Sinister: Has anyone seen my keys?

Oh it's okay, they're here. Ow my head... Top quality brains-in-a-vice hangover this morning after yesterday's booze and hill-climbing fest. Thanks to everyone I met for making me welcome and apologies to anyone I offended as the lager demons gradually took over my mind and body. Sorry I wasn't up for the football but my only use to any team would be to startle and confuse the opposition with my complete lack of apparent skill or aptitude for the game. How scary is it when you get on the tube to go home 'cos you live about 60 miles away and a complete stranger says they recognise you and has enough supporting information to back up their claim? Freaked me out I can tell you. Still have no idea who they were as any details they gave me have now vanished from my chemical-soaked mind. Love to you all...
